tjsimmonsthat's the log02:03
hggdhtjsimmons: it looks like do-release-upgrade is bypassing your proxy setup, and going straight to the repo server02:13
tjsimmonshow do you figure that? i see it query http://aptmirror (mine) for stuff02:14
hggdhtjsimmons: and then (it seems) it completely disregard whatever you have in your sources.list, and creates a new one (which will, I guess, fail). The rest is, ah, history02:14

JimBuntuzer0x, that doesn't seem as related as this one, still looking for something newer. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=12583108:02
JimBuntuzer0x, Did you say this drive DOES or DOES NOT work in other OS like Windows? (with the same set up)08:03
zer0xJimBuntu: I haven't tested on Windows yet, this is the first time I use it after buying a new laptop and take that drive out to SSD.08:04
zer0xSo I can say that it is brand new from factory to my hand08:05
JimBuntuzer0x, Ok. That was also a little leading... did the enclosure come with it's own USB cable and if so, are you using it? Perhaps one with multiple USB heads?08:05
zer0xJimBuntu: here is my enclosure: http://www.orico.cc/goods.php?id=633508:08
JimBuntuzer0x, Ok, that looks like a single head cable and I see they listed support for it without a driver in Linux, which as we see it's being recognized to some degree.08:09
zer0xShould I try the archlinux link? Add usb-storage.delay_use=5" to the kernel or add "options usb_storage delay_use=508:09

zer0xJimBuntu: it's still the same, in fact we could echo 5 to /sys/module/usb_storage/parameters/delay_use and test immediately but OS still doesn't recognize the drive, I'm gonna restart again to test on Windows08:18

beaky10https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADn2IJnTRyM08:21
zer0xJimBuntu: after plugging in and out several times on Windows, it works perfectly on Linux too, it's like Windows can actually boot the drive up. On Linux we can only see the usb interface of the enclosure but it seems that the drive isn't running, that's why we can't access or mount. Quite strange.08:29
JimBuntuHaving to plug it in a few times doesn't sound encouraging. I suggest exchanging it either for the same brand or a different brand, if that's an option.08:30
zer0xOn windows, it's not recognized at first, the usb icon shows in Explorer but when I access, it says there's no disk. So I opened the case and re-plug the drive, after that it shows up every time. Maybe it's just a glitch in the beginning. Anyways let's see if the enclosure is good enough.08:31

MsK`what ships with ubuntu by default nowadays? still gnome?08:46
hateballUbuntu is GNOME. I personally use Kubuntu with KDE Plasma08:47
MsK`ok, I didn't try that08:47
hateballMsK`: just asking so you dont only fix it for one DE :D08:47
MsK`^^08:47
hateballMsK`: anyhow for GNOME this old thing is the only thing I found while googling... https://askubuntu.com/questions/412917/how-to-increase-waiting-time-for-non-responding-programs08:47
hateballI don't quite know if it is a user configurable setting in Plasma either, or if it is hardcoded08:48
MsK`ah thanks, and hurhhh08:48
JimBuntuMy 2 bits would be that it sounds like a thread is blocking the main app, i.e. the app should perform any slow 'loading' in a sub-thread to prevent this. Main should reasonably be free to reply08:49
hateballMsK`: I remember your game from a gamingonlinux.com article :)08:50
hateballMsK`: if it's made in Unity it might be something that is an issue with that08:50
JimBuntuMsK`, for some background, the move from Unity to Gnome (for normal/stock Ubuntu) only happened a few months ago and updates from the previous Long Term Release just started hitting people08:51
hateballI mean Unity the game engine, just to be clear when JimBuntu mentions Unity the DE :D08:51
JimBuntuThanks for pointing that out hateball, things can get confusing quickly08:52
hateballIf only there was something like a search engine that people could use before naming their projects08:52
JimBuntuhateball, Maybe we can start by coming up with a name for the search engine... I am thinking something that plays off some word or phrase for a large number ;-D08:53
hateball:)08:53
MsK`yeah, I'm going to report a bug to unity but that's far from an easy fix...08:54

zzarrI have tried to manually revert the changes09:03
zzarrI changed all bionic to xenial and 18.04 to 16.04 in the /etc/os-release file09:04
zzarrnow systemd complains about not having the correct version of libsystemd009:05
=== r0Oter is now known as r00ter
zzarroh, I changed all bionic to xenial in /etc/apt/sources.list to09:06
guiverc_dzzarr, changes sources back to a prior release won't help you go back, packages from the later release will have higher numbers (why they were upgraded), and won't downgrade using apt tools.. you need to restore a backup09:06
guiverc_ds/changes/changing at start of my last09:06
zzarrokey, I'll revert my own changes09:08
guiverc_dzzarr, your other option is to re-try the upgrade... if `do-release-upgrade` stopped of failed, you can usually fix whatever issue it was having, then re-run it (and it'll continue the release-upgrade process)09:11
zzarrguiverc_d, I have tried, but it says there's no new release09:12
guiverc_dit sounds like it believes it succeeded (and is now 18.04).  what is the problem with your 'broken system', or did you get errors? that told you it 'failed upgrade'?09:14
zzarryes, that is the case, no errors, just told me it found no candidate for alot of packages09:15
guiverc_dzzarr, are they ubuntu sourced packages?? or 3rd party?  (ie. ppa, or other non-repo; or can you provide an example?)09:16

lord_daemonpragmaticenigma I installed fluxbox, it only opens when I run startx. Another strange thing is that the x11vnc -loop does not work when I put in the initialization, in any file. I wanted everything to be done in the automatic way. run the vnc server and I can access by seeing the two screens.12:43
ioriaBlackDalek,  idk exactly what happened , but try   sudo apt install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop12:43

lord_daemonI just want to solve the problem of vnc12:44
pragmaticenigmalord_daemon: I'm not too familiar with fluxbox, but what I have experienced should still apply. If x11vnc is initialized before both monitors are avaialble, it will use the available dimnesions of the active monitor. x11vnc does not have the ability to auto resize when a new monitor is added to the host. The only way I have found to make it work reliable (on KDE for me) is to add it to the auto start list after12:45
pragmaticenigmalogin.12:45
pragmaticenigmalord_daemon: It might work if you placed it at the very end of the startx script, after adding a significant sleep delay12:46
pragmaticenigmalord_daemon: assuming that is where you added the trigger12:46
pragmaticenigmalord_daemon: I believe -loop has to be used with the -forever argument. This is what I have configured: x11vnc -display :0 -forever -loop -noxdamage -repeat -skip_lockkeys -noxrecord -rfbport 5900 -shared12:49

lord_daemonreally this option I had not tried. using sleep.12:53
pragmaticenigmaThe sleep is just to try and delay the execution of x11vnc until both monitors have been brought up. I'm not familiar with rc.local... is that where you have x11vnc currently setup to execute?12:54

lord_daemonpragmaticenigma in fact I have tried in some places, like: inittab, rc.local, xinitc etc. but I still have not got it. I'll try today with sleep when I get to work.12:57

BlackDalekBluesKaj, I've installed kodi from the official kodi repo team-xbmc/ppa... should I use the ubuntu repos instead?13:06
BluesKajtytan, check again or make sure all universe repos are enabled13:06
BluesKajBlackDalek, I use the default kodi from the repos, yes...sometimes ppa apps aren't as well maintained as the defaults13:08

kiilosome offtopic ... anyone knows some cloning suite with UEFI ipxe support - clonedeploy is offline, cant fix installation after upgrade breaks it13:46
Aliekezhihi, since I upgraded from 16.04 to 18.04, I can't access anymore to some smb:\\path shares. In caja (the quivalent of Nautilus under MATE), the error message is : "failed to mount windows share, function not implemented". Any idea how to debug this ?13:47
DanielK_WMDEHi! Since I no longer use KDE, and Konversation keeps crashing, I'm looking for a new IRC client.13:47
AliekezhiI get this error message after authentification13:47
DanielK_WMDEWhat client do you use and recommend?13:47
kiiloi will have a look at fogproject maybe ... but what i liked in clone deploy is - it just works by pxe boot no need to define a task in webinterface13:47
* DanielK_WMDE is considering testing polari and hexchat.13:50

pragmaticenigmafeodoran: I don't have an answer then. It could be a number of things. DPMS could be getting triggered for some reason, could be the display drivers. jenniepragmaticenigma: ok, I will make 4TB partition then, which should be like how many gbs/20:15
pragmaticenigmaI will correct my previous statement as I didn't notice snapcraft.io is operated by Canonical. However, the software published there is supported by the developers directly. Since the documation for those snaps is not provided on Ubuntu's wiki's and help sites, we aren't going to be able to support it well enough. Compared to the developer and the sites and forums they have setup for their software.20:16
OerHekschingus, you could file a bugreport, but he has got to fix the issue, snapscraft io is owned as a platform, yes20:16
pragmaticenigmajennie: what tool are you using to partition your drive?20:17
chinguspragmaticenigma, thanks for the clarification20:19
univernI'm on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and NetworkManager won't connect to anything, can anyone help? Thanks20:24
univernIt can't see any WiFi networks, and connecting directly via Ethernet (with an Ethernet/USB dongle) doesn't work either20:25
univern"sudo ifconfig" shows an Ethernet links, which is "up", but no IP address has been assigned20:25
univernping 8.8.8.8 returns nothing20:25
univernPoking around the standard config files (/etc/resolv.conf, /etc/network/interfaces, etc.) doesn't seem to help because NetworkManager does everything20:26
univernRunning "sudo NetworkManager -d" returns "device (enp0s31f6): state change: unmanaged -> unavailable (reason 'managed')"20:27
univern(plus a bunch of other output, but I'm not sure what's relevant)20:28
pragmaticenigmaunivern: Please stop.... if someone is available to address your issue, they will respond20:28
mousesunivern: Can you pastebin the results of sudo iwconfig20:29
mousesunivern: also the results of: sudo lspci -vvnn | grep Network20:30
univern@mouses: It's hard to pastebin anything because the laptop has no network connection, but iwconfig just returns "no wireless extensions" on all connections (enp0s31f6, lo, docker0)20:31
mousesunivern: sounds like hardware is not even detected.20:31
mousesunivern: are you using that ubunutu 16.04 GUI?20:31
jenniepragmaticenigma: I am usgin regular Ubuntu disk utility tool20:32
mousesunivern: does going into system -> settings -> software updates -> additional drivers maybe show a wireless driver needing to be installed?20:32
mousesunivern: (not 100% sure if that's the way to get there, but 'additional drivers' should be a option somewhere in settings)20:32
univernmouses: Hrm. I'm using the standard 16.04 GUI (Unity) with a terminal app for command line20:32
mousesunivern: go into the GUI settings and poke about for 'additional drivers'20:32
mousesunivern: ahh!  Software centers -> right most tab -> additional drivers20:33
univernmouses: Additional drivers shows "No additional drivers available" (although maybe it can't detect them if there's no Internet?)20:33
mousesunivern: grrrrr20:33
mousesyeah that might be the issue20:34
mousesno working LAN/WLAN makes it tricky lol20:34
univernmouses: The lspci command returns "02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Device [8086:24fd] (rev 78)"20:34
mousesunivern: does your wifi password include any non standard characters?20:35
univernNo, but that doesn't seem like it should matter since it can't connect via Ethernet either20:35
mousesunivern: yeah, was thinking that :(20:35
mousesunivern: do you still have your install media handy?20:35
univernYes20:35
mousescan you boot a live session and if so - same issue in a live session?20:35
univernI tried live boot/chroot/apt update; apt upgrade but that didn't work20:36
univernNo the live session works fine20:36
mousesokay, so that helps narrow it down20:36
mouseslive session works fine...20:36
mousespost install does not20:36
mouseswhat are you changing between the two20:36
univernThis is many months post-install, so a large number of things might have changed20:37
univern(it quit working just recently)20:37
mousesayyyy20:37
mousesunivern: is a 'backup all user data and reinstall' an option?20:37
mousesunivern: might be easier than figuring out what exactly is going on :(20:38
univernIt's always an option, but that's a pain of course20:38
univernNod20:38
mousesyeah :(20:38
mousesunivern: Remember anything you installed before the problem started that had anything to do with network management?20:38
univernNo, sorry20:38
mousesunivern: this is why I take a image every week :)20:39
univernHah. Yeah20:39
mousesunivern: moment, digging.20:39
univernThe wireless model from the laptop specs is "Intel® Dual-Band Wireless AC (2 x 2) 8265 + Bluetooth® 4.1 with vPro™" if that helps20:39
mousesunivern: lswh shows the Ethernet interface?20:39
sanketHello people - does anybody know when will 16.04 folks get the 18.04.1 update ?20:40
mousesunivern: for the heck of it, try this for me20:40
mousesunivern: in your terminal fire off thisL20:40
mousessystemctl restart NetworkManager.service20:40
mousesand then check LAN connection20:40
univernmouses: sudo lshw -C network shows two networks, one is "UNCLAIMED" with description "Network controller", the other has description "Ethernet interface"20:40
mousesunivern: *nods* try that last thing, any change?20:41
univernmouses: Don't think so. I've tried killing and restarting NetworkManager a bunch of times, mucked around with the config files based on various StackOverflow suggestions20:42
univernNone of them appeared to do anything20:42
sanketexit20:42
mousesunivern: okay, more ideas - so do a ifconfig -a20:42
mousesunivern: what is the name of the ethernet adapter20:42
mousessomething like enpsXX?20:42
univernmouses: There's a docker0 Ethernet adapter but I assume we don't care about that. What I think is the main one is "enp0s31f6". And there's lo of course.20:43
mousesahhhh20:43
mousesunivern: okay, now we are cooking with fire20:43
mousesunivern: ethtool enp0s31f620:43
mousesunivern: Link detected = yes?20:44
lunaticeditHey, I have safe boot enabled, I let ubuntu install the key and all that. It boots just fine, but Grub always says 'booting in unsecure mode' and in low resolution.. any ideas?20:44
univernmouses: Yeah I tried that before when searching StackOverflow. It shows a bunch of config settings but "Link detected" is "no".20:44
univern(I've tested this Ethernet cable with another machine and confirmed it's live.)(20:44
lunaticediter secure boot20:45
mousesunivern: link detected = 'no' is worrying20:45
mousesunivern: for testing - can you remove that docker interface20:45
siinus`2https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADn2IJnTRyM20:45
mousesunivern: perhaps that is causing your issues?20:45
univernmouses: What's the command for that?20:46
lunaticedit(also secure boot is enabled per mokutil)20:46
mousesunivern: ip link del docker020:46
mousesunivern: also after that20:46
univernmouses: Done20:47
mousesnmcli connection delete docker020:47
mousesokay good - now restart the network manager20:47
mousessystemctl restart NetworkManager.service20:47
univernmouses: nmcli errors out, "unknown connection", I assume since it's already deleted20:47
mousesunivern: yup, just making sure20:47
univernunivern: Restarted, no apparent change to anything20:48
univernwell, except ifconfig has two entries instead of 320:48
mousesunivern: link detected in ethtool still shows 'no'?20:48
univernYes20:48

tommymwell i believe i did21:04
tommymI also make sure to uncomment  waylandenable=false in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf to no avail21:05
