pirxhas anyone installed any graphical effects in xubuntu/xfce? stuff like fading in/out windows when they open/close?18:49
pirxi think that "desktop visual effects" is what i am looking for18:51
pirxi mean, i like that xfce is to lean and fast, but if i could install a few effects and still have it almost as fast, i wouldnt mind:)18:53
Spasspirx, nope I did not, maybe with other WM you might be able to do stuff like that. compton?18:53
Spassyou can take a look at Enso OS, it's basically very customized Xubuntu with Gala WM instead of Xfwm - https://enso-os.site/18:54
Spassbut from my experience the window effects are not worth it, they use visibly more CPU, I think I prefer my desktop as fast as possible, without the "wobbly windows" and stuff like that :) been there, done that18:57
diogenes_pirx, you can use compiz, lots of cool effects and animations and almost no impact on cpu18:58
Spasscompiz works good with Xfce?18:59
pirxSpass: will check out enso, thanks!19:00
diogenes_Spass, it works excellent, actually that's the first thing i ever install on a new fresh os install19:00
pirxdiogenes_: will check out that first:)19:00
pirxthanks!19:00
Spasspirx, be aware that Enso is in beta state, you'll probably encounter few bugs19:01
Spassdiogenes_, cool, good to know19:01
diogenes_Spass, yeah, it has all the features one could think of, in the past i liked the effects, the 3d windows effect, the 3d sphere and so on, but nowadays i use it mainly because of 3 things, 1. excellent screen enhanced magnifier (that is absolutely necessary for me) 2. window rules, specify the size and the place that application should appear on the screen 3. no screen tearing.19:05

tomreynhi. i'm running xubuntu 18.04 (upgraded from 16.04). when i login on gdm , what happens is that xubuntu starts on tty2, while gdm continues running on tty1. is this normal?22:47
brainwashtomreyn: but it works fine with lightdm?23:00
tomreynbrainwash: haven't tried. i switched to gdm while still on 16.04.5 since lightdm wouldnt ask me for a password when i returned to the screen after long absence23:02
brainwasha password for the login screen?23:03
brainwashnot sure if I understand that part23:03
tomreynright, there was no login screen then (only on initial boot)23:03
tomreynit apparently faield to lock the screen properly, reacticating the screen after longer absence just meant i was logged in immediatley and continued where i had left off, no password prompt.23:04
tomreynwhich i didnt feel so comfortable with. ;)23:04
brainwashmy guess would be that gdm is running with wayland as backend23:05
tomreynbut that's not what i'm asking now23:05
tomreyniguess, so, too, yes23:05
brainwashyou can configure gdm to use xorg instead23:05
brainwashthat's what I would test23:06
tomreynyes i could do this. i'm just wondering how its supposed to work23:06
brainwashthe configuring?23:06
tomreynno, how xubuntu 18.04 is supposed to login by default23:07
tomreynsomeone probably tested xubuntu on 18.04 before release, and made a plan about how things should be configured.23:07
brainwashbut xubuntu uses lightdm by default23:08
brainwashand lightdm has no wayland support23:08
tomreyni see23:08
tomreynwell, maybe i'll just give it another try.23:08
brainwashplease do23:08
tomreyni dont trust it too much due to this 'mishap' about lack of screen locking23:09
tomreynand similar bugs it had in the past23:09
brainwashxubuntu relies on light-locker for screen locking. light-locker utilizes lightdm.23:10
tomreynso you're saying that screen locking with xubuntu on top of gdm cant work?23:11
brainwashnot sure23:12
tomreynwell it does for me.23:13
tomreyni'll try lightdm now23:14
brainwashinstall it with the lightdm-gtk-greeter23:17
tomreyni already had both installed, lightdm and lightdm-gtk-greeter23:18
brainwashalright23:18
tomreynso locking seems to work, at leats when initiated manually23:19
tomreynjust the entire thing now runs on tty7, no longer on 1 and 223:19
tomreynbut i guess that's fine, as long as locking will contineu to work.23:19
tomreynthanks for your time.23:19
brainwashyou're welcome23:20
tomreynhmm no, still the same problem.23:28
tomreynwhen i dont use the computer for a while, it blanks then screen, then puts the screen to power saving, but it never locks it.23:29
tomreynhttp://i.imgur.com/jaZsr4B.png23:30
Spasstomreyn, maybe check your xfce4-power-manager-settings on last tab23:30
Spassoh..23:30
tomreynsee above23:30
tomreynthe other relevant tab looks like this http://i.imgur.com/RCGkdk4.png23:31
Spasstomreyn, does the "xflock4" command work properly?23:32
tomreynyes. it spawns the locvk screen. so does manual locking via the menu.23:32
tomreynmanually via actions menu also works.23:33
tomreynctrl-alt-l, too.23:34
tomreynjust screen saver initiated locking fails.23:34
Spassit spawns gdm or lightdm?23:35
tomreyni get the blueish background, i think this is light-lockers' own screen.23:35
tomreynthe session is initiated via lightdm now, if that's what you'Re asking23:36
brainwashbummer23:39
tomreyndoes anyone of you run xubuntu on 18.04 then?23:40
tomreynit'd be nice to know whether this is a general issue or more likely a matter of local configuration changes.23:41
brainwashI can test in a VM23:41
tomreynhmm i could actually do this, too, so no need thanks.23:41
Spassit works fine on my 18.04 install, on my laptop23:42
tomreynfresh install?23:42
Spassyes23:42
tomreynokay, so not generally an issue, good.23:43
Spasswill check on my desktop now, it's upgraded from 17.1023:43
brainwashtested it. works.23:43
brainwashwith your settings23:43
Spassworks fine on my desktop too23:45
tomreynthanks for testing, you two! since i had the ssme issue on 16.04, i assume there would be a bit more discussion on this if it was a general issue on both 16.04 and 18.04. so the likely explanation is that it's due to some local modifications i may have made.23:45
tomreynso you waited for it to go to sleep automatically, didnt lock yourself, right?23:45
brainwashyes, 1min23:45
brainwash+ the 10sec delay23:46
tomreynokay, i should probably try a new user account23:46
brainwashI was about to suggest that :)23:46
Spassyeah I waited too23:47
tomreynty23:47
tomreynand ttyl, got to leave for a bit...23:48
brainwashkillall light-locker; light-locker --debug23:48
brainwashwill give some debug output23:48
tomreynkillall light-locker tells me that:  light-locker: no process found23:51
brainwashuhm23:51
brainwashit should be running23:51
brainwashthere should be an autostart entry for it23:52
brainwashsettings > startup and blabla > autostart23:53
tomreynyes, there is "Screen Locker (Launch screen locker program)", mouseover: "Command: light-locker" listed and ticked.23:55
tomreynthat's in session and Startup -> Appolication Autostart.23:56
brainwashright23:56
tomreynbut it's not running23:56
brainwashnot even initially?23:57
brainwashit could be that it crashes at some point later23:57
brainwashstarting it manually works?23:57
tomreynyes, running "light-locker --debug" from a GNU screen works23:58
tomreynoh, but23:58
tomreyn...then it fails23:58
brainwashinteresting23:58
brainwashprobably something for ubuntu-bug23:59
