tsimonq2Heya duflu06:34

seb128hey duflu tsimonq207:25

seb128how is everyone?07:25
didrocksbonjour seb128 !07:26
dufluseb128, alright. Yourself?07:26
seb128I'm good!07:27
tsimonq2Heya seb128, good, how about you?07:28
seb128good :)07:29
oSoMoNhey seb128, sorry I missed your greeting08:26
seb128lut oSoMoN, no worry :)08:26
dufludidrocks, are sliders meant to be blue in Yaru?08:47
dufluI thought we had accidentally regressed to Adwaita, but that's a different shade of blue08:48
didrocksduflu: no, it's a design decision08:48
dufluOhhh08:48
didrocksit's the unity8 blue IIRC08:48
dufluWell, Yaru fixes much more than it breaks so I won't spend too much time complaining :)08:49
didrocksthere iw a wiki with design decisions written down btw08:50
didrockshttps://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/wiki08:50
dufludidrocks, the shutdown dialog colour's different to the design though. Is that right?08:53
didrocksduflu: designed evolved, wiki isn't fully up to date (I think GDM and Shell dialogs aren't + dock icons)08:53
dufluCool08:53
didrocksthe only thing I really don't like with yaru are the nautilus aubergine and blue icons08:54
didrocksthe desktop / trash ones08:54
didrocksI wonder if we shouldn't change them08:54
oSoMoNdidrocks, seconded, I don't really like those two icons either09:03
didrocksnot alone \o/09:04
oSoMoNFrench good taste :)09:05
dufluYes I have read people complaining about the trash icon. Although no bug report for it yet09:06
jibelit looks more like a mailbox than a trash TBH09:20
dufluDepends. Somewhere in the world it probably looks like a trashcan (reminds me of the 1980/90's actually) and somewhere else it might look like a mailbox. We should choose icons that make sense it multiple localities to many people though09:34
duflu-it +in09:34
didrocksthat always reminds me the "log" icon and the day I understood why it was that icon09:36
dufluYeah bad design09:37
dufluIt should be just a page of lines09:38
popeyoSoMoN: hello! could you please fix the license for chromium in the store? it's currently "unknown".10:26
popeyoh, hang on, the web store shows it right, but my laptop says 'unknown' in snap info.10:27
popeyoSoMoN: looks like you need to add license data to the snapcraft.yaml so it gets put in meta/snap.yaml when published.10:29
oSoMoNthat doesn't sound right, why would "snap info" get its data from a different place?10:38
oSoMoNpopey, I'll add the license field chromium's snapcraft.yaml, but do you know why "snap info" doesn't get the license info from the store, like the store webui does?10:46
popeyoSoMoN: it reads from the snap itself.10:46
popeyby design.10:46
jbichadidrocks: hi, is bug 1787401 a bug or intentional?10:46
ubot5bug 1787401 in gnome-shell (Ubuntu) "[cosmic] app icons in GNOME Shell top bar are symbolic instead of full-color" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/178740110:46
popeyif it's installed, it reads from the snap, if not installed, gets it from the store10:46
oSoMoNok10:47
oSoMoNfair enough10:47
oSoMoNhttps://docs.snapcraft.io/build-snaps/syntax doesn't mention the license field10:50
oSoMoNpopey, do you know what the expected syntax is for that field? same as the webui, a string containing a valid SPDX expression?10:51
popeynot off the top of my head10:51
popeybut I expect spdx yes10:51
oSoMoNmmm the only example I can find in the snapcraft source tree points to a separate filename that contains the license10:52
oSoMoNpopey, I'm running snapcraft 2.42.1+18.4 and getting this:11:00
oSoMoNIssues while validating None: Additional properties are not allowed ('license' was unexpected)11:00
oSoMoNso it looks like this isn't implemented in snapcraft yet11:00
popeywaaaaaat11:00
popeyyou sure? I thought it was there for ages.11:01
popeyhttps://github.com/snapcore/snapcraft/blob/4f80a10517a4b81623bee63f2cd236d574af93ac/tests/integration/snaps/license/snapcraft.yaml11:01
oSoMoNhttps://forum.snapcraft.io/t/accept-license-field-in-snapcraft-yaml/487811:01
oSoMoNnothing in that thread indicates that the work was actually done11:02
oSoMoNpopey, that integration test is the only reference to the license field in the snapcraft source, looks like it's there in anticipation of the feature being actually implemented11:03
popeyahh poo. Sorry.11:04

didrocksjbicha: no, I guess someone screwed up when merging…12:34
didrocksjbicha: seems Trevinho did this: https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/commit/050ddce6ca81f805e228e0b3505aebe5c4f31997#diff-bd1d59deea6a6eeba80285784fae338bR867 :/12:35
didrocksTrevinho: hey, how did you do your 3-way merge? There is at least this regression introduced12:35
didrocksyeah, only   .system-menu-action {12:43
didrocks    -st-icon-style: symbolic;12:43
didrocks 12:43
didrocks}12:43
didrockswas added12:43
didrocksnot in the appmenu12:43
didrocksso, following the guide I wrote for this: make a 3 way merge, in the first 2 columns you have the diff old upstream / new upstream and report the diff there12:44
didrocksdoing that, only the second symbolic is shown, I don't know why/how you reported the first one as it didn't appear in the diff12:44
didrocksdo we need to rereview the whole merge?12:44
=== pstolowski|lunch is now known as pstolowski
didrockscomparing the upstream _common.scss diff (https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/commit/296eabf962e8c3feb4b639a6a972606f4ee6e0f0#diff-634f10b5fa67ba12287afbfac8c62f13) to the one you reported: https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/commit/050ddce6ca81f805e228e0b3505aebe5c4f31997#diff-bd1d59deea6a6eeba80285784fae338b it seems we have to redo it :/12:46
didrocksthere are whitespaces/tabs changes at least which isn't upstream12:47
didrocksand so, creating additional diff :/12:47
didrocks+ additional commented lines, like https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/commit/050ddce6ca81f805e228e0b3505aebe5c4f31997#diff-bd1d59deea6a6eeba80285784fae338bR147012:48

didrocksok, let's remove the symbolic icon already, jbicha as you found it out, mind removing it? (in _common.scss)12:50
jbichaok12:50
didrocksthx!12:50
jbichadidrocks: do you want it uploaded now or wait for someone to do 3.29.92 later this week?12:52
jbichaoh never mind, this is yaru, not gnome-shell12:53
didrocksjbicha: yeah, we can late for later, let's put that in the yaru repo already12:54
jbichaI don't have upload rights to that github. Should I? or do you want a merge request?12:54
didrocksjbicha: PR please12:55
didrocksI'll just accept it12:55
Trevinhodidrocks: for what I noticed it was done properly, the symbolic style was added upstream and so I did13:01
didrocksTrevinho: no, it wasn't13:03
didrockssee above13:03
Trevinhowhiteline were upstrem so I readded to reduce the clutter later13:03
didrockshttps://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/commit/050ddce6ca81f805e228e0b3505aebe5c4f31997#diff-bd1d59deea6a6eeba80285784fae338bR86713:03
didrocksin     .app-menu-icon {13:03
jbichaTrevinho: see https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/commit/a0df7aa2b13:04
didrocksTrevinho: tell me where you see it in https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/commit/296eabf962e8c3feb4b639a6a972606f4ee6e0f013:04
Trevinhodidrocks: diffing yaru's upstream and yaru src looks fine to me, didn't I update upstream properly maybe? But I did the raw copy properly... but that's the reason why I didn't like this as the workflow13:09
didrocksTrevinho: well, if you look at the tarball and diff old upstream new upstream, there isn't any diff in .app-menu-icon13:09
didrocksbut you are telling that was added upstream, where did you see it?13:10
didrocksit's even not in the upstream diff you committed, so I wonder where you saw it and how you imported the changes…13:10
Trevinhoalso I don't see any diff between upstream css and yaru's upstream13:10
didrocksTrevinho: but there was one before, no st-symbolic in .app-menu-icon in yaru13:10
didrocksand you reintroduced it13:11
didrockswhere, if you follow the guide, you wouldn't even have seen it13:11
didrocksyou maybe don't like the workflow, but you didn't follow the workflow…13:11
didrocks(also, opened to any improvement, but first, try at least following it to understand how a 3-way merge work :/)13:12
Trevinhono, no... I followed the guide13:12
didrocksso, I'm back to my question13:12
TrevinhoI said i didn't like the fact of using raw copy.13:12
TrevinhoI used meld and everything13:13
didrockswhere did you see in the diff between old upstream to new upstream addition of st-symbolic in .app-menu-icon?13:13
didrocksit's not even in the raw copy you committed13:13
seb128is that the only error? if so that's maybe a simple honest mistake? those merges can be tedious and errors can happen...13:13
Trevinhodidrocks this is what I have in diffing yaru vs upstream  https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/XcGmskfBBS/13:14
didrocksseb128: the issue is that we don't know13:14
didrocksTrevinho: the guide mention old upstream/new upstream13:14
didrocksseb128: but Trevinho told he followed it, where it can't even appear, this is why I'm trying to understand what he did13:14
seb128Trevinho, I guess you want to diff upstream/yaru in 3.28 and 3.29 ?13:14
Trevinhodidrocks: my command from history was meld gnome-shell-sass/_common.scss /tmp/upstream_common.scss ../src/gnome-shell-sass/_common.scss13:15
Trevinhowhere.... in tmp I had the uptream one, while it was run inside yaru/gnome-shell/src13:15
TrevinhoI think13:15
didrocksTrevinho: so, it means you had a diff between the first two columns in .app-menu-icon adding st-symbolic?13:16
didrocksTrevinho: but then, when you cp /tmp/* to upstream/ this diff doesn't appear anymore?13:16
Trevinhofor sure I noticed that it was something we  didn't have and wasn't changed before, so I added it13:16
didrocks(nor it was added to GNOME Shell tarball .scss?)13:16
didrocksah, so you didn't follow the guide13:17
didrocksthe guide only talk about look at the diff in the first 2 columns13:17
didrockson purpose13:17
didrocksnot to readd things we removed13:17
Trevinhodidrocks: I can't remember now, honestly...13:17
didrockswell, my bet is that you added/removed looking at upstream/yaru diff13:18
didrocksI'm just afraid that you changed other things though13:18
didrocksand I can't even know how to spot them13:18
seb128re-do the merge and look at the diff in the result I guess?13:18
Trevinhohow no? melding on prev vs next..13:18
didrocksseb128: we need to go back to the exact commit, because things changed13:19
didrocksTrevinho: mind doing that? to ensure we didn't miss anything?13:19
Trevinhothat's fine13:19
didrocksTrevinho: thanks for the cleanup of the resulting diff (tab/extra mess still)13:19
Trevinhodidrocks: since we're there... On theming have you read the discussion about migration13:19
didrockscould have been a separate commit to make that clearer, but yeah, needed13:19
Trevinhoyeah, well, since I was melding...13:20
didrocksyeah, I think that's good practice that could be added in the guide13:20
didrocksbut I suggest a separate commit13:20
didrockslike "reduce the diff"13:20
didrocks(and so reviewing the diff for obvious cruft)13:20
Trevinhoack13:20
didrockson the question13:21
didrocksI saw something from you along the line "if someone changed his theme and is back on Ambiance or Radiance, let's switch her/him"13:21
didrockswas that it?13:21
Trevinhodidrocks: I see what the problem was I think13:22
Trevinho`git show 296eabf962e8c3feb4b639a6a972606f4ee6e0f0 gnome-shell/upstream/gnome-shell-sass/`13:22
Trevinhoon yaru13:22
Trevinhosee that updating upstream introduced that change13:22
Trevinhohttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/MMxgR5DGqv/13:22
didrocksthe only -st-icon-style: symbolic; addition I see is on .system-menu-action {13:23
didrocksnot .app-menu-icon13:23
didrocksas told multiple times ;)13:23
didrocks(and so, difference place in meld)13:23
Trevinhoso maybe I got confused and since I remembered a commit about that I readded where I noticed was missing13:24
didrockshum, in meld, you can "pick" changes13:24
didrockslike the arrow between the 2nd (which is the new upstream) and the 3rd13:24
didrocksand at least, you add them in the correct place in the file13:25
didrocksbut here, you added both13:25
Trevinhoanyway, I think is really the only thing that changed, because other changes looks fine checking what changed upstream and how it reflected on yaru13:26
didrocksok, we'll see, but I would prefer a double checking :)13:26
Trevinhofine, as per the migration story?13:27
Trevinhonot sure if you read the MP13:27
didrocks15:21:26 didrocks | I saw something from you along the line "if someone changed his theme and is back on Ambiance or Radiance, let's switch her/him"13:27
didrocks15:21:28 didrocks | was that it?13:27
Trevinhodidrocks: yep, I wrote also something more in the email and I've a MP with some rationale13:29
Trevinhobut... where is it now? :-D13:29
didrocksin the email? I think I missed it13:29
Trevinhoseb's email about yuru by default13:29
didrockson that part: the never ending question of "have a default, switching to something and then back, is that still the default?" debate ;) I tend to say yes, but got a lot of discussions previously that wasn't the case :)13:29
didrocksI'm still convinced it's the default and say we should switch them13:29
* didrocks looks back13:30
Trevinhodidrocks: I agree, but there are also concerns related to the fact I wanted to change sessions-migration for that13:30
didrocksTrevinho: I don't see anything about session-migration changes in the email13:31
didrocksonly what I wrote above ^13:31
seb128kenvandine, it's meeting time?13:31
kenvandineyes!13:31
Trevinhodidrocks: ok I wrote something https://code.launchpad.net/~3v1n0/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+git/gnome-session/+merge/35334013:31
didrocksTrevinho: and yeah, your script LGTM, only run it in ubuntu-session13:32

kenvandinesnapcraft debug symbols:13:36
kenvandine* I put together a post on the Snapcraft forum about collecting debug13:36
kenvandineinformation for snap builds:13:36
kenvandinehttps://forum.snapcraft.io/t/collecting-debug-symbols/701713:36
kenvandine* The only feedback I've received so far is about third party services13:36
kenvandinethat could be used for symbol storage and retracing.  Having snapcraft13:36
kenvandineseparate and collect the symbols would be necessary for whatever13:36
kenvandinetracing solution we'd use, so that's what I've been focusing on.13:36
kenvandine* I've got a branch to add support for cataloging the build IDs and13:36
kenvandinepresence of debug info in ELF files, so I'll use that as a trial13:36
kenvandineballoon PR for acceptance of these features.13:36
kenvandinepulseaudio snap policy module:13:36
kenvandine* I produced a debdiff of the classic snap support changes for cosmic.13:36
kenvandine* I'm finishing testing a bionic debdiff, and will start checking how13:36
kenvandinewell the patches backport to xenial.13:36
kenvandinesnapd pull requests:13:36
kenvandine* I updated the desktop portal startup PR to take into account13:36
kenvandineniemeyer's review comments.  Still need to get it merged.13:36
kenvandinesnap-glib:13:37

kenvandinethanks everyone!13:58
seb128thanks kenvandine & team!13:59
seb128nice efficient one13:59
didrocksthx!13:59
didrocksTrevinho: on your gdm changes, please PR the yaru guide on how to change the gdm screen for developers (people installing under /usr/local)13:59
didrocksand also people who want to revert to vanilla one13:59
Trevinhodidrocks: yeah, I will but still they didn't land yet and I wanted to be upstreamed first13:59
seb128kenvandine, btw it doesn't look like we have trello cards for "update the snap platform to 3.29/30 & the gnome apps to their cosmic version", we should right?14:00
Trevinhodidrocks: i run it from jhbuild so, should be the same thing :)14:00
didrocksTrevinho: ah, we are still using the alternatives?14:00
didrocksok :)14:00
seb128kenvandine, our GNOME snaps are outdated compared to the deb, it's supposed to be the other way around :p14:00
Trevinhodidrocks: it's still on alternative14:00
didrocksbut when you land it, remember to publicize and update those :)14:00
didrocksTrevinho: so, on session-migration…14:00
didrocksI read the code14:00
didrocksand gnome-session integration14:00
Trevinhodidrocks: what I wanted to do is the ability to setup the MODE from somewhere, and I think an extra desktop entry will work14:01
kenvandineseb128, yeah...14:01
didrocksthe issue is that we now have per-session defaults ofc…14:01
didrockswe have multiple options14:01
Trevinhoyep14:01
didrockseither check for the session, exit 0 if doesn't match14:01
kenvandinei've updated what i can with the versions we have in the backports PPA14:01
seb128kenvandine, can you get cards for that in the board and people assigned? ;)14:01
didrocksmeaning we will never run the migratino14:01
Trevinhoso that's the thing, I don't want to change back to default for who is using vanilla gnome14:01
didrockswhich is OK, we don't expect people to change that often14:01
didrockswhat we can even14:01
didrocksif check if value in that sessino == default14:01
Trevinhonor I want it to mark a script as run14:01
didrocks(default for that session)14:01
Trevinhoran*14:02
didrocksstill do a reset14:02
didrocksthat way, no change for current session and back to default for ubuntu-session14:02
Trevinhodidrocks: have you seen the MP's comments?14:02
didrocksyeah14:02
kenvandineseb128, i'll update the card for the platform build snap, because i think really that's what we need to make this maintainable14:02
didrocksso, exit 1 is the last alternative14:02
didrocksit won't do anything bad14:02
Trevinhodidrocks: I wanted to introduce a new exit-mode though14:02
Trevinhoso it won't spam14:02
didrockslike session-migration only prints something14:02
Trevinholike "skip this"14:03
didrocksbut yeah, then, it will try everytime14:03
didrocksskip as "skip forever"?14:03
seb128kenvandine, how likely is that going to be in place for cosmic though?14:03
Trevinhobetter would supporting XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP, but I didn't either want to do major changes14:03
seb128kenvandine, we need to track deliverable items and we need to update our seeded snaps now so they get testing14:03
kenvandineseb128, not likely... so i guess what i really need is a backports ppa for 3.30 :)14:03
kenvandineyeah14:03
Trevinhoalso because we need to define a way to pick the files who are "per-session" only14:03
Trevinhoand those who are anywhere my user is14:04
didrocksTrevinho: what is different from checking XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP and exit 0?14:04
Trevinhoper-desktop-session I meant14:04
didrocksit's like your skipping?14:04
Trevinhoyep...14:04
Trevinhojust having a way to pick scripts per session would allow not to try forever if there are no scripts to be launched for that session14:05
didrocksTrevinho: wait, the migration is per session14:05
Trevinholike if we support .desktop files as scripts, then the .desktop can be used for launching something depending on the environment14:05
didrocksTrevinho: so if XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP != ubuntu; exit 014:06
didrocksthen, let run the script14:06
Trevinhomh, yeah... per user-session, right?14:06
didrocksyes14:06
didrocksthe stamp to not rerun already runned script has the session name in it14:06
Trevinhobut if i'm in a vanilla gnome user session, that will be marked as ran, no?14:06
didrocksright14:06
didrockswhich is what you want14:06
Trevinho(if I don't exit 1)14:06
didrocksthen, you switch to ubuntu session14:06
Trevinhonope, because if then I login to ubuntu it won't run14:06
didrocksit's not in the "ubuntu" session file14:07
didrocksit will be run14:07
didrocksand stamped there14:07
didrocksas told:14:07
didrocks16:06:35     didrocks | the stamp to not rerun already runned script has the session name in it14:07
Trevinhoahhhhh ok ok14:07
Trevinhothat's fine14:07
TrevinhoI didn't notice the file itself was tracking it14:07
didrocksit does :)14:07
didrocksto not spoil the rest of the system14:08
Trevinhook, good... so just returning outside of ubuntu is fine14:08
didrocksyep!14:08
Trevinhook, let me adapt the script then.. it should be already fine once that is checked14:08
didrocksyes14:09
Trevinhowhich was my 1st guess, then since I didn't remember this fact of the stamp file...14:09
didrocksTrevinho: you can simplify it, like doing the transactional stuff14:09
didrockschecking for defaults14:09
didrocksinstead of hardcoding then14:09
TrevinhoI would have liked to have it ubuntu-settings package, but since I didn't want to introduce there an extra dep I just changed  it in gnome-session is it ok?'14:09
didrocksapart from checking for radiance14:09
didrocksTrevinho: gnome-session -> ubuntu-session binary package, correct?14:10
Trevinhodidrocks: like just check != default and Radiance?14:10
didrocksyep14:10
didrocksoh14:10
didrockshum14:10
didrockswe want to check old default14:10
Trevinhomh, that's ok... but again I didn't want to touch peope with Pop!Gtk for example :)14:10
Trevinhoso... not sure for that14:10
didrocksyeah14:10
didrockshum, that's indeed debatable14:10
Trevinhoso I added the defaults14:10
didrockswell, keep checking for the hardcoded list then for now14:11
Trevinhoyeah seb128 was saying the same of you14:11
Trevinhobut I didn't want to change too much.14:11
Trevinhoat the end is just few hardcoded well-known names14:11
didrocksit's going to look weird IMHO to have a different theme for them and still having default gnome shell one14:11
didrockswhich changes14:11
didrocksbut I guess that's ok14:11
Trevinhoseb128:  as for https://bileto.ubuntu.com/#/ticket/3385 who can review that? You? Didier? Andy? :)14:12
Trevinhodidrocks: yes, it's even true that if an user changed to something different than old defaults (which could have been changed also from the old unity-control-center easily for upgraders), he probably know how to do it again14:14
Trevinhoand the fact to have mismatching theming will force it to do it14:14
didrocksyeah14:15
didrockssounds good to me14:15
Trevinhoxnox: mh as per meson change, I think it would have been better to fix systemd instead of changing meson again, since meson will do that anyway soon (so better to be prepared), and at least two package breaks now for this (well yaru is quite random on that). So need to use workarounds that will be trashed later, more than a fix that will sitll be relevant later15:34
jbichaTrevinho: meson 0.47.2-1 was just released which I think includes the meson workaround15:37
Trevinhojbicha: might be yes..15:38
xnoxTrevinho, sure, but i don't have "proper" fixes for systemd.16:20
xnoxTrevinho, and that too will take time.16:20
xnoxTrevinho, so are you saying there are things still regressed with the meson as is now in cosmic-release, right? what are they?16:21
xnoxi want to look at that.16:21
=== pstolowski is now known as pstolowski|afk
Trevinhoxnox: for sure ubuntu-settings should be, but we had already a workaround for it,  so you can just revert it from git17:13
Trevinhoxnox: then I got some failures (I can't find the log now) for icons in yaru. The problem with that is that installation is not always done in the same order (mhmh, not really nice not to have a predictible system) and thus sometimes the symlinks exists already and thus thing work, other times they don't yet and thus it fails17:14
xnoxTrevinho, where is git for ubuntu-settings?17:16
Trevinhoxnox: https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-desktop/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-settings/+git/ubuntu-settings17:16
Trevinhoyaru is in github instead17:17
xnoxTrevinho, thanks!17:21
xnoxTrevinho, i believe with my upload ubuntu-settings will continue to work - ie. the dangling symlink will be copied as dangling, and that will continue to work in the future too17:25
xnoxmy upload of meson in cosmic release that is.17:26
Trevinhoxnox: ah, ok fine enough then17:26
Trevinhowhat I've touched instead was just fixing the permission thing, as meson was acting on the linked file instead that on the link itself.17:26
xnoxTrevinho, it's only akward for non-dangling things which will change behaviour.17:26
Trevinho(on the platforms that are supported for that)17:27
xnoxurgh! i understand now!17:27
xnox(the non-danglign affects systemd only so far as far as i can tell at the moment)17:27
xnoxwill check yuru stuff17:27
Trevinhoyaru might need couple of rebuilds to test (disable the png compression though)17:28
Trevinhoor will take ages17:28
xnoxurgh17:28
oSoMoNhave a good night everyone18:24
seb128xnox, is your change coming from upstream?18:34
robert_ancelljamesh, my talk got accepted for LCA! :)22:27
jbicharobert_ancell: how did you manage to find a conference where you don't have to change time zones? 👍22:37
robert_ancelljbicha, I sure did!22:37
