moredrowsyhey guys, i'm running ubuntu on an externel hd and recently just found out why some applications were so SLOW to load or even stop loading, such as calculator, system monitor and etc. so i'm deciding to just remove all snap stuff02:32

k_sze[work]Are all drivers already installed and ready for loading (via udev?)03:04

jonnnothats great to know thank you very much was just cooking the wife dinner11:54
jonnnowould that be minimal installation of various apps or low use of ram/resources or both and why please11:56
lotuspsychjejonnno: its the users choice really, a normal lubuntu install surely will suit your system..but if you really want it minimal, choose minimal to save space on your hd also11:57
lotuspsychjejonnno: just keep in mind installing minimal would make you install all kinds of other things manually11:58
jonnnothats cool i usually end up using sudo apt-get install* heaps of times even on the full version11:59
guivercjonnno, just fyi:  i prefer xubuntu (which isn't as light as lubuntu) just because it's my preference...  the apps/programs you use can also cause a drop in performance (eg. using qt/kde apps under a non-qt system like xubuntu/lubuntu will waste memory & resources as the GUI/DEsktop uses one set, the app uses different libs..) so a lighter DEsktop choice may not work if using non-native programs/apps... just an fyi.12:00

texlatomreyn, https://pastebin.com/k705BSQU17:45
nacctexla: why did you pastebin that ?17:45
nacctexla: we aren't going to write the tool you want for you. You have all the info you need there to get what you want.17:46
tomreyn"sudo parted /dev/sda print free" will list "Free Space" where there are unpartitioned areas on a storage17:47
texlatomreyn, Thanks that gives me the info I was looking for17:52

tomreynVitoG: do you have an ubuntu support question?18:06
VitoG the new ryzen 7 pro isnt working with ubuntu18:07
tomreynVitoG: do you have an ubuntu support question?18:07
VitoGyeah how can i get an hp elitebook 745 G5 to work with ubuntu18:08
VitoGapparently there is a bug report on it now18:08
jeffreeI'm a little confused about NetworkManager settings. Under the settings for my NIC, under the IPv4 tab, next to IPv4 method there is "Automatic (DHCP), Manual, Link-Local Only, and Disable" then there is a switch below called "Automatic". What does this switch do?18:08
tomreynVitoG: can you point out the bug report?18:08
VitoGhttps://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/hp-elitebook-745-g5-install-operating-system-of-ubuntu-18-04/td-p/678839218:09
jeffreeMy assumption was that the automatic switch would switch between DHCP and the manually input DNS addresses, but this would be redundant since there is already check boxes for this.18:09
tomreynVitoG: ok, this is a post on an hp discussion board, not an ubuntu bug report, though.18:10
VitoGi saw something on ask ubuntu too18:10
tomreynVitoG: is G5 the hardware variant you have there?18:10
naccjeffree: that's the DNS line18:10
naccjeffree: and then there's a Routes line18:10
jeffreenacc: could you be more specific?18:11
naccjeffree: not really.18:11
jeffreeok18:11
jeffreeI'll wait18:11
naccjeffree: take a screenshot, if you are still confused?18:11

VitoGthere u go18:12
VitoGspecific to ryzen18:12
naccjeffree: ok, so what's your question?18:12
naccjeffree: that switch is for getting DNS automatically18:12
naccjeffree: do you see how the ipv4 tab is three sections?18:12
jeffreedid you see where I said it would be redundant?18:12
tomreynVitoG: this is a different computer model. maybe let's take on this from a different perspective. tell us what happens when you try to install (or run an already installed) ubuntu on this system.18:13
naccjeffree: do you understand that IP allocation and DNS are different?18:13
jeffreeah, that's my confusion18:13
naccjeffree: it's not redundant, you can get an IP via automatica DHCP and manually specify DNS.18:13
jeffreealright, another question18:14
VitoGnevermind18:14
VitoGhp is working on a firmware fix18:14
jeffreeI have DNS set to automatic but wireshark shows that ubuntu is doing a DNS query to the DNS addresses that I have input18:14
naccinput where?18:15
jeffreeshouldn't it show that it queries my router instead?18:15
naccjeffree: --^18:15
tomreynthe screen shots on the hp forum look like it's an issue with their bios / uefi firmware, yes.18:15
jeffreeon the DNS line18:15
naccjeffree: you just said you selected automatic DNS. So you are also specifying static DNS?18:17
naccjeffree: seriously, you know enough to use wireshark, but you don't know how DNS works?18:17
jeffreenacc, seriously, what is wrong with you?18:17
Fuseteamwell i solved my storage problem!18:17
Fuseteamit was thunderbird after all18:17
Fuseteami've moved the mail storage to my ntfs drive and mounted it back to the original position18:17
naccjeffree: you gave your DNS configuration N DNS servers to query. So it queries them.18:18
naccjeffree: I don't see how that's confusing at all.18:18
jeffreenacc: the switch is set to automatic18:18
jeffreewhat does that do?18:18
naccjeffree: it obtains DNS servers from the DHCP server.18:18
jeffreethen why isn't it doing that?18:18
naccjeffree: it does not *exclude* providing static entries as well18:18
ash_worksiis "mssql.compatability_mode" on http://php.net/manual/en/ini.list.php a typo or is this a typo on ubuntu's part? Ubuntu ships with a directive "mssql.compatibility_mode" (compat/I/bility vs compat/A/bility)18:18
naccjeffree: so if you choose to misconfigure your system, that's your issue.18:18
jeffreethat makes no sense to me18:18
jeffreefuck dud18:19
naccjeffree: you made the choice. I agree it's not a sensible choice.18:19

tomreynash_worksi: there are no php5.6 packages in ubuntu 16.04 LTS18:39

ISSE8OK guys, just booted somethin non-EFI in the bios and I am back in lubuntu18:45
ISSE8why is this happening?18:46
tomreynleonardus: i' don't think there is a way to restart GNOME without losing the state of the programs you have open. i'm not sure which memory leak you are referring to (i'm running gnome 3 fine on an amd64 system, have not rebooted in days,gnome-shell is consuming < 1G RAM)18:47
ash_worksiwow, doesn't get more "top of the list" then that18:48
pragmaticenigmaISSE8: You installed Lubuntu without EFI support18:49
ioriatomreyn, this one i think : https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-shell/+bug/167229718:50
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1672297 in gjs (Ubuntu Bionic) "gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time" [Critical,In progress]18:50
ISSE8I simply downloaded the image and installed it18:50
ISSE8how do I make it work with EFI?18:51
=== NickG365_ is now known as NickG365
pragmaticenigmaISSE8: I'm going to assume that you disabled EFI in order to install. As far as I know, the only way to make it EFI, is to reinstall. Making sure that the EFI is enabled in the BIOD18:52
ISSE8OK18:53
ISSE8no EFI then18:53
CarlFKI have  https://numato.com/docs/8-channel-usb-relay-module/   -   this works: echo "relay off 0"> /dev/ttyACM1   and if I connect with a terminal app, this works: "relay read 0 "  shows "off".  but I can't figure out how to get that in bash, like:18:53
CarlFKecho "relay read 0"> /dev/ttyACM1 && cat /dev/ttyACM118:53
tomreynthanks ioria, wasnt awar eof this one.18:54
leonardusyeah I'm on an Intel CPU if that makes a difference18:54
leonardus18.04 LTS18:54
ioriatomreyn, yeah, quite critical18:55
ISSE8thanks pragmaticenigma!18:55
tomreynioria: all but the latest comments seem to refer to 18.04.0. dio you know whether this is still an issue (it doesn't seem to manifest on my system)?18:56
pragmaticenigmaleonardus: have you run "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade" since installing? There are no reports of memory leaks since the patch offered earlier this spring. If you are experiencing memory leaks, it is more likely the way you have configured your system or one of the applications that you are using.18:57
ioriatomreyn, i think the thing it's still in progress18:57
sveinseI have a NUC runing 18.04 server and I need to access its console. However, the HDMI output has no output. Probably because it was booted without a connected display. Is there any way I can reenable the HDMI display output from remote console (and I do want linux console on it, there is no X)18:58
tomreynioria: turns out i dont have gjs running. maybe it's not actually required or just invoked in some configurations but not others. (i'm wondering about a workaround here)18:58
iorialeonardus, you can try the usual   Alt+F2 ; r; return18:59
pragmaticenigmasveinse: With the display attached... try pressing shift or ctrl on the keyboard. If that doesn't work, try the key combination "CTRL + ALT + F3"19:01
ioriatomreyn, well, the workround is to restart gnome-shell19:01
ash_worksiI reread the nacc jeffree convo and I think I get what jeffree was confused about19:02
sveinsepragmaticenigma: yeah, already tried that. Still no HDMI output.19:03
sveinseCan I read any info of the connected displays from the console?19:03
pragmaticenigmasveinse: not that I'm aware of19:04
pragmaticenigmasveinse: this might work... not sure though: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/72320/how-can-i-hook-on-to-one-terminals-output-from-another-terminal19:06
netcrashhello, How can I get the headphones to be always on after reboot and with sound? Headphones always go off after reboot , It-s speakers connected to the motherboard19:07
ash_worksiI think the confusing aspect is that in the non-sensical event that both static and automatic configurations are set, from a UI perspective, a 'switch' seem more of an override than static entries. Though I imagine it to be possibly desirable if the static DNS list were misconfigured or unreachable, automatic check preference to have an effect19:07
ash_worksibut I think a windows UI would actually disable static configurations if you check automatic, but I'm not sure19:08
pragmaticenigmaash_worksi: Please don't re-dig up old conversations.19:09
iorianetcrash, Auto-Mute is enabled or disabled in  alsamixer ?19:09
tomreynioria: so maybe a cron job for "gnome-shell --replace" (also specifying the DISPLAY), would work19:09
ioriatomreyn, yes, i think so19:10
netcrashioria: how can I check that?19:10
iorianetcrash,  run 'alsamixer' in terminal19:10
netcrashioria: it was on19:11
tomreynleonardus: so *IF* you are affected by the bug iroria linked ( 1672297 ), consider setting up such a cron job.19:11
iorianetcrash,  you mean 'enabled' ? if so, try to disable19:11
netcrashioria: switch to disable , did alsactl store ... will it work after reboot:19:12
netcrash?19:12
iorianetcrash,  no idea : )  but no harm19:12
netcrashioria: going to test, thank you19:12
ioriaok19:12
leonardusThis is a screen recording of what it looks like when GNOME starts slowing down. I'm not sure if it's "the" memory leak bug, but it happens often for me: https://streamable.com/s1ylr19:13
sveinseIs a shame that MB turs off their screen output on headless servers. If the server network is astray and one suddenly need a console, it isn't just to connect an external display :(19:14
iorialeonardus, i don't see a 'mem leak' there19:14
leonardusyeah then I don't know why it's slowing down19:14
iorialeonardus,  run 'top'19:14
leonardusit behaves similarly to a memory leak. After a while things start getting slower.19:14
leonardusioria: not experiencing it right now but when I do I'll run that19:14
iorialeonardus,  mem leak is a garbage collector issue ... it's about ram19:15
EriC^^see how much memory you have when it happens, and if you're using swap19:15
ash_worksio/ EriC^^19:16
EriC^^hey ash_worksi o/19:16
leonardusIt persists after I close all programs too.19:16
ash_worksithat's all, just a o/ :)19:16
EriC^^:)19:17
JimBuntuI don't see this having been asked... shot in the dark... leonardus, did you upgrade in advance of the point release?19:17
leonarduswhat do you mean?19:17
iorialeonardus,  uname -r   and paste here19:17
leonardusubuntu@desktop:~$ uname -r19:18
leonardus4.15.0-33-generic19:18
JimBuntuleonardus, Well, that kind  of answers it. I was wondering what version you had installed and when it was from19:18
leonardusJimBuntu: downloaded and installed 18.04 the day it was released19:18
leonardusfrom the ubuntu website19:18
iorialeonardus,  did you run 'top' ?19:19
netcrashioria: now the sound headphones are disabled in alsamixer when I start the system turning it on and using alsactl store does not solve it. Any ideas ?19:19
leonardusioria: I can run it but I'm not sure if it would be of much use, since I'm not experiencing any slowness right now19:19
iorianetcrash, alsactl store it's not needed anymore,i guess19:20
netcrashioria: even so the headphones are off ... :s19:20
iorianetcrash, just disable auto-mute19:20
netcrashioria: can it be that the system is not detecting the speakers?19:21
netcrashioria: i did disable it19:21
iorialeonardus,  and when did you experience that cpu loads exactly ?19:21
iorianetcrash, i'd try with pavucontrol19:23
leonardusnot sure what you're asking ioria19:23
netcrashioria: did change the output with pavucontrol ,after the reboot it keeps using the speakers exit19:23
iorialeonardus,  ok, when did have that 'slowness ' ?19:25
leonardusthat was recorded a bit more than a week ago19:25
leonardusbut i had it 2 days ago too19:25
tomreynleonardus: what this video shows is increased cpu load. but this could also be a result of recording this high resolution  video.19:27
tomreynleonardus: what this video does *not* show is increased memory load, which is what a memleak would cause. so you don't seem to have a memleak issue there.19:28
netcrashioria: think I found a workaround sleep 5 && amixer -c 0 set Headphone 100% &19:28
leonardusyeah i'm not sure what it is then19:28
netcrashwhere can I place this so it executes on boot19:28
netcrash?19:28
leonardusif there's no unusual resource usage, then i don't know why gnome would be so slow19:28
pragmaticenigmasveinse: Most datacenters, the servers are attached to a KVM, which mean the display is always detected. the other side of the coin is, if no display is attached, why waste CPU cycles and power on something not in use.19:32
JimBuntuleonardus, see if you notice your HDD(whatever tech) is busy next time. This time I did notice you were having CPU spikes as well.19:36
sveinsepragmaticenigma: Well, a console it a safety net. Well actually, most servers have ILO or similar, which offers a secondary independent networkable KVM by HW. Anyhow, this is not the case for small headless servers, right19:36
leonardusJimBuntu: is there a way to simulate that19:37
JimBuntuleonardus, I am sure there is, but I can't think of a way that wouldn't also basically be a fork bomb19:37
Squall5668Every server should have out of band management if you care enough about it. There is also a reason they have D-SUB instead of HDMI ports19:38
leonardusJimBuntu: copying a large file would that work?19:38
pragmaticenigmasveinse: I ran into the same issue with a rpi... I know the annoyance19:38
JimBuntuleonardus, I wouldn't expect a single large file to do it, but you could run a bunch of similar read/writes and background them one after another19:38
JimBuntuleonardus, this may sound strange, but if it's an option... the next it happens, see if you can SSH into that box from another.19:39
sveinsepragmaticenigma: Perhaps these fake HDMI dongles could be useful. I know they have found a surprising use when using the GPU for processing, since the available GPU power is a function of the type display connected19:39
sveinsehttps://www.ebay.com/itm/Plate-Screen-DDC-EDID-Dummy-Plug-HDMI-1-4-Virtual-Display-Emulator-Adapter/292413077417?hash=item44152d77a9%3Am%3Amm5yM0jrjIQOrVaGM_M17Pg&var=59128261414819:40
pragmaticenigmasveinse: interesting, I'll have to check it out sometime. I think part of my issue was the rpi probably was outputing on the composite output, but didn't have a display nearby to work with at the time. The rpi is running headless as my local network DNS server. Runs like a champ, except when I couldn't verify if when moving it, it lost power19:41
sveinsepragmaticenigma: I believe the story for the NUC is somewhat similar: The GPU supports max two displays of three outputs, so there is some (HW?) logic to select which ports to activate. And in my case, none, so no ports seems to have link.19:42
peter22222hi folks... anybody knows how to get rid of the single quotes of the ls-command?20:14
pragmaticenigmapeter22222: It was a decision made upstream and would require you to compile your own version of ls without the flag enabled that encapsulates files with spaces in single quotes20:17
peter22222pragmaticenigma ah, thank you, so it is standard now?20:17
leftyfbwhat is this about?20:18
peter22222it prints out like 'file.txt' and 'path with spaces'20:19
leftyfbwhere?20:19
peter22222in terminal when i type ls-command20:19
pragmaticenigmaleftyfb: When using the "ls" command, files with spaces are displayed with a single quote on each end in terminal.20:19
peter22222all files are single quoted and paths with spaces as well20:20
peter22222was kind of confusing when i saw it first20:20
pragmaticenigmapeter22222: I think that if you alias the ls command and add the switch "-N" it turns it off20:20
leftyfboh, look at that20:20
leftyfbmight help with scripting20:21
pragmaticenigmapeter22222: Confirmed, using the "-N" argument on ls will turn off the single quote20:21
peter22222pragmaticenigma thank you, yes i ve tried that out before.. but then the ls-output is listed like each item in a new row instead of like saving space and list several files/folders in a row20:22
pragmaticenigmapeter22222: I'm not sure I follow... you mean short mode versus long mode?20:23
peter22222pragmaticenigma yes.. short mode like  hehe sorry for my bad english..20:24
peter22222:-)20:24
pragmaticenigmapeter22222: That's okay... the switch works for both. If you are thinking of "ll" command, that's actually an alias to "ls -laF"20:25

CammeraI have to set a display to only use the upper 1024x600 pixels of the screen, xorg's missedintifying it as 1024x76821:14
ChunkzZwhat's the difference between "universe, multiverse" etc in apt/sources.list?21:14
CammeraUniverse is maintained by the community and open source21:15
CammeraMultiverse is closedsource and/or has legal issues too21:16

MrokiiHello. A friend has just installed openssh on his laptop. The ssh-server is running but when I try to connect to his public ip address via ssh I always get "no route to host". Does he need to forward port 22 (which I standard I believe) in his router, to make a connection possible? Or what else could be the problem?21:57
striveMrokii: That sounds about right.21:57
striveMrokii: Whatever port he's using on the server must be port-forwarded on his router.21:58
striveMrokii: This question seems better suited for ##networking.21:59
tomreynMrokii: other than that, any firewall (including ufw on their laptop) needs to be disabled or reconfigured to allow connecting21:59
tomreyn(that's *if* ufw is enabled there)22:00
strive^22:00
littlejohnnydisabling ufw/gufw does not unblock the port, you need to allow it.22:00
Mrokiistrive:, tomreyn: Thanks, then I will ask him about the port-forwarding. I'm pretty sure he hasn't ufw enabled.22:00
striveMrokii: One step at a time :)22:00
Mrokiilittlejohnny: yeah, I know. If port forwarding is the problem, this is the next thing we'll try.22:01
striveAlso, I believe ufw is disabled by default in Ubuntu.22:01
MrokiiYeah, I think I've heard that before, that it's disabled.22:02
striveUpon installing Ubuntu, I immediately installed i3wm; will removing gnome gnome-extras cause any harm to my current display manager?22:03
littlejohnnyufw sends explicit rules(if applied) to iptables if im not mistaken and dont think it makes a difference if ufw is disabled. or not22:03
littlejohnnyive tested, can anyone confirm?22:03
mousesstrive: Most likely, yes.  i3 is just a window manager, it still relies and expects the display manager to be sane and not broken.22:06
mousesstrive: unless you are really hurting on space, I'd just leave it alone.22:06
CammeraUh, not to seem insistent, but I had to disconnect several times22:07
CammeraSo if anyone answered what I asked about xrandr's transform send it again22:07
mobile_chow do i obtain libcrypto (OpenSSL)22:10

naccmobile_c: did you look at the manpage?23:19
naccmobile_c: or more specifically, on your system do you see `man OpenSSL_add_all_ciphers` ?23:20
naccalso it's an upstream bug: https://github.com/mackyle/xar/issues/1823:20
mutantewe are running a mirror of the Ubuntu repo. a couple days ago the sync from upstream stopped working. the reason is: us.rsync.archive.ubuntu.com 873: Name or service not known.  Is it known? Did it change?23:34
naccthat's probably a question for the canonical channel(s) mutante23:34

ft-Hi, i was trailing a process call which caused may disks to spin up from standby, but now as i am looking into the following line of pstree i am not sure what to make of this, has somebody an idea for me?23:40
ft-|-sshd---sshd---sh---run-parts---update-motd-fsc---dumpe2fs---pstree23:40
ft-i remapad the dumpe2fs command to call pstree, in order to trace the call hirachy..23:41
naccft-: you changed what dumpe2fs does?23:43
naccft-: if so, and you changed it to call pstree itself, what is your question?23:43
ft-year but, not realy i yust added a bit of debug function into the call.23:43
naccdid your debug function call pstree?23:44
ft-something is calling dumpe2fs but i do not know what and why.23:44
naccupdate-motd-fsc is calling it apparently23:44
ft-a moment i will post the debug function..23:44
naccupdate-motd-fsck-at-reboot23:44
naccit was truncated, i guess23:44
naccand that it indeed, calls dumpe2fs23:45
naccproblem solved, have a nice day! :)23:45
nacc(`dpkg -S update-motd-fsc` is how i found it)23:45
ft-truncated, but why is doing this every night? thx :)23:45
nacci assume it's happening when update-notifier runs23:46
ft-hm ok thx for the hint!23:47
naccwhich i think might be cron controlled? not sure23:47
ft-well a new lead for me :) something to work on.23:47
naccit's just checking to tell you a fsck is needed, i think, on the next reboot23:48
ft-mmh strange on my old ubuntu os versions <18 was nothing like that.23:49
ft-and why is it in a process hrirachy comming from sshd..23:49
naccit's possible the motd wasn't updated until you logged in via ssh? i'm not sure23:49
naccthere are a lot more motd things in 18.0423:50
naccft-: but i'm grasping at straws, tbh23:50
ft-oh ok, maybe i can reduce the motd communication a bit.23:50
forgotmynickHello. I have issues with sendmail and gmail - it keeps connecting to gmail on ipv6 and failing to send. I've modified /etc/gai.conf but sendmail is still connecting via ipv6. Can someone please tell me how to fix this? I don't want to disable ipv6 completely as I will need it later23:50
ft-nacc, thanks a lot!23:51
