gbear14275I did disable the windows boot manager in bios though05:20
gbear14275so looking at the listing of items from efibootmgr output my error message on boot seems to be trying to add an ubuntu entry as one higher than the current ubuntu entry05:22
gbear14275for example... efibootmgr says "Boot0001* ubuntu" while the startup error I'm getting now says "Creating boot entry "Boot0002" with label "ubuntu" for file "\EFI\ubuntu\shimx64.efi""05:23
gbear14275however I can't find a directory \EFI\ either under / or /boot/...05:24

KoolaidJunkieI'm trying to dual boot Win10 and Ubuntu, but it won't install GRUB (or at least its not booting into it) -- I went through the install process via USB, system reboots, but it goes directly to Win10.. please help?05:26
Triffid_HunterKoolaidJunkie: might have to go tell your bios which EFI entry to boot first05:27
gbear14275KoolaidJunkie: try going into your BIOS and disabling your windows boot manager.... although I'm not sure I'm one to ask because I can't get my system to boot at all05:27
joe_zKoolaidJunkie: sounds like a boot order issue05:28
joe_zhad that trouble on an HP laptop05:28
joe_zhad to find the boot menu and force it to boot linux05:28
joe_zthen I was able to fix it by adjusting the boot order in efibootmgr05:28
joe_zworse yet, I had to do that every time I entered the bios, because it would reset it05:29
joe_zeven worse, eventually they updated the bios and couldn't fix it from efibootmgr anymore05:29
joe_zI just have to enter the boot menu on that laptop every time now05:29
joe_zI don't use it so much anymore, at least05:30
KoolaidJunkie@Triffid_Hunter, I don't have an option in BIOS for that.. the BIOS is very limited when it comes to option05:30
KoolaidJunkie@gbear14275, I don't have option to turn off Windows Boot Manager in BIOs05:30
gbear14275KoolaidJunkie: you don't have a "boot" setup section of your BIOS?  that's where I found mine05:31
gbear14275or "startup" with boot order05:31
joe_zKoolaidJunkie: you may have to find the boot menu05:31

joe_zit might not even exist05:31
joe_zbut likely it's a different key to bring it up than the one to get into the setup05:31

KoolaidJunkie@gbear14275, there is a booth order, but it only gives 4 boot options "Windows Boot Manager" "CD/DVD" (which this tower doesn't have) "Removable Drive" "LAN"05:32
KoolaidJunkieThere are 4 Boot Sequences (1st 2nd 3rd 4th) -- I set all to disabled, but 1 = removable05:33

I'd highly recommend you upgrade that. I read through the release notes of all the versions in between and there are a LOT of fixes for USB problems on that model19:20
Xat`hello guys, I have a 16.04 server and have a init script for a specific service. When I start the service manually with /etc/init.d/sonar start , it starts well . After I had added service at boot with update-rc.d command, if I reboot, the service does not start automatically. And, again, if I do /etc/init.d/sonar start manually, it starts well ..19:22
TJ-As for you Acer AO722, could be a disconnection issue. According to this (Windows OS) thread reporting the camera missing it turns out the user found the camera's USB connector had disconnected internally! http://www.tomsguide.com/forum/88226-35-acer-aspire-ao722-webcam-problems19:22

TJ-TheWild: yes, I know these termbins are for the Acer One 722 :) I had forgotten the other day to tell you about the BIOS/firmware A21 being available for the E6450 - I'd bet that may well sort things out19:28
TJ-TheWild: not the Dell - marked key is on some Acer netbooks (because they were designed to be very low power, they enabled powering off many devices)19:29
TheWildAcer has some keys marked but none of them resembles camera.19:30

TJ-TheWild: the AO722 camera is USB ID 04f2:b1d8. you can see a summary of the devices here: https://linux-hardware.org/index.php?probe=24dea8e5d819:32
TJ-TheWild: Reading the AO722 service manual it says the camera is optional and is only fitted in 'certain models' without saying how to tell :)19:40
ylel9#discous-ubuntu19:44
TheWildlol, don't tell me this one is fake camera19:48
Xat`ok nevermind, I switched from init to systemd directly19:48
TheWildI think it was used at least once in the past, but can't tell for sure.19:49
TJ-TheWild: page 75 of the AO722 service manual shows how to replace the camera board - it looks relatively easy (in the preceeding pages) to pop the LCD cover off to check there is a camera fitted. I've put the service manual on my web-site for you: http://iam.tj/projects/misc/Acer%20Aspire%20One%20AO722%20Service%20Manual.pdf19:50
TJ-TheWild: if you pop the cover and the board is there, then as per that forum post, check the connector is firmly in place and consider hot-gluing it permanently!19:51
TheWildouch, breaking nails on this one20:00
TJ-TheWild: :) the things we do :D20:00
TJ-TheWild: you need a 'spudger'20:00
TheWildI'll better check it with the manual because although the camera doesn't seem to fake (it has PCB!), but there are no obvious connection.20:01
TJ-TheWild: you're saying you've found the camera board on the AO722?20:02
TJ-TheWild: there should be a wire plugged into the connector20:02
TJ-TheWild: outlined in red on page 65 of the PDF, bottom-right photo20:03
TheWildindeed there is connector, although it's black as the rest of the case, not white, so I couldn't spot it in the first place.20:03
TJ-TheWild: if that end is firmly connected it might be worth checking that the other end of the cable is firmly connected to the motherboard. If it still doesn't show up to the software, check BIOS setup doesn't have a 'disable camera' option set20:05
TheWildwell, I'll do that, someday. I brought Acer because I thought it will solve somewhat the mystery of Dell's camera. If Acer's camera would work then does Ubuntu know what to do with it out of the box? How it is listed? IMHO unlikely both computers have their cameras broken.20:11

TJ-kinghat: is there anything in the logs? /var/log/auth.log or possibly /var/log/syslog21:42
kinghatsays i cant access those either21:47

kinghathttps://usercontent.irccloud-cdn.com/file/GIx98oWt/Screenshot_20181009_164526.png21:48
TJ-kinghat: as tester1 that doesn't surprise me. you need root privileges via sudo or pkexec21:48
kinghatfor media to work or just to view the logs?21:49
kinghati mean cant i just give tester1 everything that kinghat has? and then should work?21:50
johnnyfiveIs there a way to apply the settings in /etc/default/locale to my current session w/o rebooting?21:50

niekniekhello! my ubuntu machine won't hibernate when running pm-hibernate.22:01
niekniekI looked at /var/log/syslog etc but no errors it seems22:02
niekniekGoogle gave me a lot of fixes for issues with waking up, but my machine won't sleep at all..22:03
kinghatTJ-: stuck here after trying to log out of the tester1 session. any way to not kill the kinghat session?22:03
kinghathttps://usercontent.irccloud-cdn.com/file/RSaXUa2r/irccloudcapture923940837019008679.jpg22:04
niekniekwhen running pm-hibernate as root the terminal prompt will return after about 2 seconds22:04
nieknieks2disk: Could not use the resume device (try swapon -a). Reason: No such device22:07
CoJaBoniekniek: ..do you have a swap device?22:08
niekniekswapon --show gives /swapfile file  16G   0B   -222:08
niekniekbut I did change the original file for a larger one22:08
Bashing-omniekniek: And now do the UUIDs match ? ' cat /etc/fstab ' -> ' sudo blkid ' ?22:10
niekniekah, got it working! dpkg-reconfigure -pmedium uswsusp22:11
niekniekbut now it doesn't resume... that's because it's an iMac with a broken videocard... I need nomodeset22:12
niekniekI tried to add it to /etc/default/grub and did an update-grub, but it doesn't seem to work22:12
niekniekwhen editing it by hand at boottime it does work22:13
niekniekwhen pushing e the value is not in there22:15
Bashing-omniekniek: editing the kernel boot line in grub is a one time booting thing . Show us in a pastie your grub file .22:16
niekniekyou mean /etc/default/grub?22:16
Bashing-omniekniek: Yes . /etc/default/grub . Let's then know what you edited - correctly .22:17
niekniekhttps://pastebin.com/uf2NYXCJ22:17
kinghatok TJ-, if i go to the mounts i can browse them fine after putting tester1 in all the same groups as kinghat. though i still can view /media directly, just everything under it if i manually go to their respective dirs.22:18
kinghatlol now i cant view all those mounts via kinghat. wtf22:20
Bashing-omniekniek: Looks valod to me . what shows ' cat /proc/cmdline ' ?22:20
Bashing-omvalid*22:20
niekniekBashing-om: I also found about this one... it was a pebkac... I changed GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT, had to do GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX22:21
niekniekexcuse me for waisting text in the channel22:21
Bashing-omniekniek: L) .. makeing good progress .22:21
nieknieknow I only have to figure out why resuming doesn't work, it boots normally22:22
Bashing-omniekniek: encryped file system ?22:22
nieknieknope22:22
niekniekPM: Swap header not found!22:23
niekniekno, that was an old log entry22:25
elteseHi! I am trying to make a bootable usb from within Ubuntu, but it is another linux distro im trying to create a live cd of. I tried downloading etcher but ubuntu will not let me run it22:26
Bashing-omal2o3-cr: "dd" can do that .22:27
niekniekeltese: what's the error?22:27
niekniekpm-suspend works fine btw...22:28
Bashing-omeltese: Fat fingered! ^ al2o3-cr sorry 'bout the bad hilight :(22:28
elteseniekniek: Right now, absolutely nothing happens when I run the appimage22:28
elteseBashing-om: ah, np22:28
niekniekeltese: how did you install? https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/05/how-to-install-etcher-on-ubuntu22:29
elteseBashing-om: I saw a google entry about dd but I was not eager to mess about with that22:30
eltesemight have to do it though I guess =)22:30
Bashing-omeltese: Know the target and where the source is located  .. and for instance ' sudo dd if=/path/to/iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M && sync ' .22:30
elteseBashing-om: So, in this case the file is in Dowloads folder. Doing fdisk -l shows the device  to be sdc. So the command would just be '  sudo dd if=/Downloads/Manjaro.iso of=/dev/sdc bs=4m && sync ' ? Can I just autocomplete the folders name and .iso or do I need to manually look that up?22:35
TJ-eltese: "$HOME/Downloads/Manjaro.iso" not "/Downloads/Manjaro.iso", surely ? The latter is in the root directory.22:37
Bashing-omTJ-: eltese :) .. Glad TJ- is watching over us .22:38
elteseThanks to both of you :) /home/myhostname/downloads was the correct pathway and I feel like a complete airhead for not thinking about that22:41
eltesebut I do appreciate the help22:41
Bashing-omeltese: Why we are here .. soon you too can tell others how .22:42
eelstrebori tried to upgrade bionic to openssl 1.1.1 but it failed - i can't find a solution to the error messages when running openssl to create certs so i'm hoping someone here will have a solution since web searches don't return results about my problem22:52
Bashing-om!info openssl | eelstrebor22:54
ubottueelstrebor: openssl (source: openssl): Secure Sockets Layer toolkit - cryptographic utility. In component main, is important. Version 1.1.0g-2ubuntu4.1 (bionic), package size 528 kB, installed size 1095 kB22:54
hggdheelstrebor: 1.1.1 is not in the repositories...22:55
eelstreborthat doesn't help solve my problem - i'm hoping that i won't have to do a fresh install22:55
eelstreboropenssl: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libssl.so.1.1: version `OPENSSL_1_1_1' not found (required by openssl)22:55
blackflow$1M question: how did you upgrade it to something that's not in the repositories.22:56
hggdheelstrebor: this is the point. You installed something outside of the repositories, and this something has dependencies all around22:56
eelstreboryep, i used a tarball but i thought that ./configure looked to make sure that the dependencies are present22:58
blackflowthe fix can be something as simple as    apt install --reinstall openssl22:58
* eelstrebor likes to have the latest and greatest despite the risks22:58
blackflowI hope the lessons are learned. do not deviate from pre-packaged applications unless you know what you're doing ;)22:58
blackflowubuntu is not for you then22:58
blackflow!latest22:58
ubottuPackages in Ubuntu may not be the latest. Ubuntu aims for stability, so "latest" may not be a good idea. Post-release updates are only considered if they are fixes for security vulnerabilities, high impact bug fixes, or unintrusive bug fixes with substantial benefit. See also !backports, !sru, and !ppa.22:58
hggdheelstrebor: specifically, openssl depends on libssl (at the same version); also, there is a TRUCKLOAD of packages that depend on openssl, and they may, or may not, work after you move to 1.1.122:58
eelstrebori have found that upgrading via tarball usually doesn't mess up an installation - oh well, i'll try a re-install of openssl - if that doesn't fix it then i'll re-install the entire os23:00
blackflowinstalling random software from tarballs is not supported here tho. you're on your own if something else breaks.23:02
eelstrebori was having trouble creating certs with the ubuntu package but for some reason it didn't work so that's when i tried to do the upgrade23:02
blackfloweelstrebor: what certs?23:04
hggdheelstrebor: the things you have to keep in mind when upgrading versions via source: (1) is the new version API (and ABI) compatible? (2) which other packages you have depend on this new version? (3) do any of the dependant packages fix the dependency version?23:05
eelstreborblackflow, certs for openvpn - need to generate new ones due to security issues23:08
eelstreboranyway, looks like i got my problem fixed (until the next time)23:09
eelstreborgenerating a 4096 bit diffie-hellman key right now23:09
eelstreborgot to go help my kid with his math23:10
m0rd3caiI hope someone here can help me. Ive got a Ubuntu 16.04 VM running XFCE. VM has worked fine until a few days ago, all icons from the desktop, all menu bars have disappeared. I have a Bash icon (link doesnt work) but cannot get a terminal with CTRL - ALT - T. I normally SSH in but SSH seems to have crashed, connections refused. The drive this VM is on is encrypted so im pretty scared to do a hard reboot,23:18
m0rd3caii have a feeling that will break everything. Any ideas??23:18
m0rd3caithis VM runs an Apache server and that connection is still working just fine.23:19
blackflowm0rd3cai: well there's not much you can do if you can't get the term, can't ssh in, connections refused.  how did you connect to it to see the desktop and missing icons? virtual console?23:21
m0rd3caiblackflow: thats correct. from the VM console. I just tried to log in to a "guest session" and that seems to have the correct desktop settings.23:22
blackflowyou reall need the terminal and look around the logs/journal wth happened.23:23
m0rd3caiblackflow: i know, ive tried everything. guest session let me reboot so hopefully ssh comes back up.23:25
m0rd3caido you know any other key combos to bring up terminal? the bash icon links to "gnome-terminal" is there another term I can try to run?23:26
blackflowm0rd3cai: alt-F2   and then type xfce4-terminal    ?23:28
blackflowm0rd3cai: or gnome-terminal  or xterm    there should be at least xterm installed23:29
m0rd3caiblackflow: error launching application.23:31
blackflowm0rd3cai: which one?23:32
m0rd3caignome-terminal and xterm also.23:37
blackflowm0rd3cai: all that sounds like some massive issues there. maybe reboot will solve it, maybe not. you really need some kind of access to the console of terminal. reboot, and if ssh doesn't come up, reboot again but in grub force multiuser.target, and not graphical, so you canlog into text console.23:38
m0rd3caijesus i got a shell finally through guest session but cant sudo or SU. fuck.23:39
blackflowlanguage...23:39
m0rd3caiits a production server so it will be a few more hours before "maintenance time".\23:39
m0rd3caimy bad. just really frustrated. :-/23:39
blackflowbut you can journalctl though. look into it.23:40
blackflowjournalctl -n 100 -p warning..crit23:40
Kon-Is there an easy way to tell if a user is running in UEFI/GPT vs UEFI/MBR Legacy mode?23:42
m0rd3caiill have to do that after reboot. insufficient perm.23:42
blackflowKon-: there's no UEFI/MBR legacy mode. either it's EFI, or legacy (bios) boot. also EFI requires GPT. So, to check whether you've booted in EFI or legacy mode, grep dmesg for efi :)23:47
Kon-blackflow: I don't believe that's correct. In my own case, I installed Ubuntu in UEFI mode but use GRUB in MBR fashion and have no EFI system partition23:48
blackflowKon-: you may've booted into liveusb via EFI, but if you installed ubuntu on mbr and don't have efi system partition, then you're not booting to it via efi.23:49
Kon-Okay, you're talking about there only being "EFI" or "MBR" modes for Ubuntu/GRUB23:57
Kon-But I was trying to figure out if I can tell his BIOS setup based upon his partition table before he tries to install and messes things up23:57
Kon-I think I have it figured out. He's got a UEFI system but his existing OS is installed in MBR mode, because his boot partition is NTFS and not FAT32.23:59
