WildSoftHello, I'm in the process of upgrading Lubuntu from 18.04 to 18.10 via "Distribution Upgrade" and I got an Unnamed Window asking me what I want as the default display manager. I have no clue what I've used before, which one do you recommend? lightdm or sddm?01:26
lubot<marneu> sddm. Did you read the release notes, though? The upgrade path doesn't work that well, since Lubuntu changes desktop environments between 18.04 and 18.10.01:31
WildSoftI didn't read them properly I have to admit01:33
WildSoftDoes upgrading pose a problem?01:34
WildSoftah, I see now01:35
WildSoftbetter to do a clean install01:36
lubot<marneu> Well, read the manual chapter on upgrading. But the short version is "yes.". It's not recommended. ... https://manual.lubuntu.me/D/upgrading.html01:37
lubot<marneu> But hey, maybe it ends up working! Clean installs have their issues as well with this release.01:37
lubot<marneu> (mostly related to UEFI+encryption)01:38
WildSoftThanks for the info =)02:00
sappheirosglad i chose not to encrypt ...02:35
sappheiroshttps://askubuntu.com/a/890747/76147702:56
sappheirosdoes 18.10 have a 'language support' section?02:56
sappheirosI recall 18.04 had a Region & Language GUI, but i don't see that in 18.1002:57
lynoriansappheiros: locale is what I think you look for03:23
sappheirosi think i've made some progress at https://askubuntu.com/questions/1087249/how-do-i-install-the-japanese-keyboard-layout-in-lubuntu-18-1003:23
sappheirosi realized apt list does not imply the listed packages are installed03:24
sappheirosis it okay for me to uninstall ibus in order to use mozc?03:24
sappheirosor should i leave ibus alone?03:24
lynorianI think so03:24
sappheirosis there no 'SI units' option for 'Measurement Units' in LXQt Locale Configuration?03:26

lubot<marneu> @bonacin91 [managed to install amd drivers on 18.10 but i cant with nvidia...any idea], 'sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall' should work. Re: AMD drivers, the open source drivers are recommended these days and don't need to be installed.11:21
lubot<bonacin91> @marneu ['sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall' should work. Re: AMD drivers, the open source …], ty11:22
john_ramboI am having trouble updating 18.04 >>> https://paste2.org/EEnm08Ve ....What's the solution ?12:30
sappheirosIs there no keyboard shortcut to position windows split screen?13:22
sappheirosin 18.04 it was super+left/right13:22
lubot<marneu> There is, but the super shortcut for the main menu kinda broke it. They're working on it.13:30
sappheiros;_;13:30
lubot<marneu> Yeah, Lubuntu with LXQt is certainly a work in process.13:32
sappheirosare you French?13:55
lubot<marneu> German.13:55
lubot<marneu> y?13:55
sappheiros'cause we usually say 'work in progress' >_>14:04
lubot<marneu> I do, too. Don't where "work in process" came from, lol.14:05
lubot<tsimonq2> I didn't even catch that, hehe14:06
lubot<marneu> also, *Don't know14:13
lubot<marneu> geez14:13
lubot<teward001> just means you all need more coffee ;)  *hides*14:26
lubot<marneu> I'm already 2 strong coffees in, I don't think more would help much :D14:27
lubot<teward001> they're not strong enough then :P14:27
sappheirosunity is ubuntu's display manager, not used by lubuntu, right?16:40
sappheiroslubuntu uses compiz instead?16:40
* sappheiros is reading https://askubuntu.com/questions/253818/manually-turn-off-monitor16:40
sappheirosmaybe https://askubuntu.com/questions/398059/is-there-any-way-to-make-a-hotkey-turn-the-screen-off is better16:43
sappheirossweet. my solution: go into screensaver, set to blank screen, then use default ctrl+alt+l to lock screen ... but maybe i don't want to type my password every time i want to turn off the monitor ...16:47
sappheirosqpdfview blanks the screen when clicking out of a note annotation16:59
sappheiroswhy .me extention for lubuntu.me website?17:03
sappheirosaugh https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/QATracker is too involved i just want to report a bug >_>17:05
sappheiroshttps://lubuntu.me/test-cosmic-rcs/ is old news anyway, right? i mean, too late to do stuff with this iso, right?17:06
sappheirosDo I report a bug at https://phab.lubuntu.me/ ?17:08
sappheiroshttps://manual.lubuntu.me/ does not clearly say how to report bugs17:09
sappheirosfound https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu ...17:11
sappheirosisn't it better to focus on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu rather than create a manual?17:11
sappheirosi think https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu is a more natural information deposit -- the only reason i can think of for developing a manual at lubuntu.me instead is if you're working to become separate from ubuntu17:11
sappheirosmoreover, it's inconsistent to link to this wiki at https://lubuntu.me/links/ only to put a notice at the top that the viewer should go to lubuntu.me17:13
sappheirosif up-to-date information is rather to be found at lubuntu.me, then the link to the wiki at https://lubuntu.me/links/ should at least have a disclaimer that it's outdated -- but then one wonders why link it at all17:14
sappheirosfrom that wiki i finally found https://phab.lubuntu.me/w/testing/ (i couldn't find this on the site directly)17:16
wxlsappheiros: did you look at the release notes, for example?17:16
sappheirosi did, i think cursorily while trying to find system specifications (that someone at askubuntu said existed there, though i didn't find it)17:17
sappheiroslast week it feels like17:17
sappheiroswhy?17:17
wxlAnother great method to get involved is bug reporting. If you notice an issue please file a bug using the instructions on the Lubuntu Wiki.17:18
wxlDon’t want to file a bug? Let us know what the problem is (in detail, enough that we can reproduce it) and we can assist you in filing one or do it ourselves.17:18
wxl^^ direct quotes from it17:18
sappheirosthat's problematic, given someone put a "more up to date info is found at lubuntu.me" on said wiki ...17:19
sappheirosi guess i should edit the wiki then17:19
sappheiros... but i didn't see instructions on that wiki, just a link to ^17:19
wxlon what wiki where? there are multiples17:20
sappheirosnow i'm linked to https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-qa .... and i *still* have not found clear instruction on how to report a bug! >_<17:20
wxlthe link goes here: https://phab.lubuntu.me/w/bugs/17:21
sappheiroshttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/ReportingBugs17:21
sappheirosit does not explain what to do; it only redirects to https://phab.lubuntu.me/w/testing/ which likewise fails to explain how to report a bug17:21
sappheirosit only discusses testing ISO and daily builds prior to their official release17:22
wxldid you READ it or did you just skim around?17:22
sappheirosi read it17:22
wxlHow to report bugs17:22
wxlThe best way to report a bug is to simply open a terminal and run:17:22
wxlubuntu-bug name_of_the_affected_package17:22
wxlagain, exact quote17:22
sappheiros...17:22
sappheiroswa17:22
sappheiros... ??? where is ... what ...17:22
wxlon the page linked from the release notes17:22
wxl1021 < wxl:#lubuntu> the link goes here: https://phab.lubuntu.me/w/bugs/17:22
sappheirosso you're not looking at either of the two pages i linked?17:22
wxlno because they're not on the release notes17:23
sappheiroslol17:23
sappheiroswell those are the pages i found when doing simple internet searches, not the release notes ...17:23
wxlnever trust the internet17:23
wxleven the general help works https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs17:24
sappheirosnew users don't know that the release notes hold priority over https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu and, i think given the mainstream understanding of wikipedia, they should not17:24
wxlthe release notes ALWAYS HOLD PRIORITY OVER EVERYTHING17:24
sappheirosyou should expect users to be looking at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu not the release notes, wherever those are ...17:24
sappheirosoh really?17:24
wxlif you don't read the release notes, you don't know about known issues or caveats or anything17:25
wxlyou're just blindly jumping into something17:25
sappheirosi did skim through the release notes ... but i think reporting bugs should be clearly described at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu as well17:25
sappheiroshence i went down the https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu#Contribute_to_Lubuntu rabbit hole17:26
wxlwe pretty much dno't even bother much with that wiki anymore17:26
sappheiroswhich doesn't explain how17:26
wxlthe ubuntu wiki is..... a disaster17:26
wxlit works maybe 50% of the time17:26
sappheiroswhat went wrong with it?17:26
wxlthis has been a long, ongoing issue, which has caused many flavors to migrate off of it. we're not the only one.17:26
sappheiroslubuntu.net = lubuntu.me ?17:26
wxlno17:27
wxlwhich is why you don't see it mentioned anywhere17:27
wxlexcept on lubuntu.net17:27
sappheirosduckduckgo 'lubuntu release notes' puts lubuntu.net as top result17:27
wxlblame duckduckgo17:27
sappheirosaugh now i'm trying to find the release notes on your lubuntu.me site having yet more ... >_<17:28
sappheirosnot at https://lubuntu.me/blog/ not at https://lubuntu.me/downloads/ though that links to https://lubuntu.me/cosmic-released/ ...17:28
lubot<tsimonq2> Lubuntu.net is in no way official and isn't in our control.17:28
lubot<tsimonq2> It's a fan site at best.17:29
wxlit's not at downloads???17:29
sappheiros> Another great method to get involved is bug reporting. If you notice an issue please file a bug using the instructions on the Lubuntu Wiki. -- https://lubuntu.me/cosmic-released/17:29
wxl17:29
wxlLatest version (with LXQt) 18.1017:29
wxlIt is important to read the release announcement before downloading.17:29
wxlagain exact quotes here17:29
sappheirosyeah, i'm looking at that now17:29
sappheirosand i just quoted it to you17:29
sappheirosit says to go to the Lubuntu Wiki to learn how to file bugs!!!17:29
sappheirosa broken loop17:29
wxlit says to go to the lubuntu wiki at phab.lubuntu.me not wiki.ubuntu.com17:29
sappheirosoh.17:29
wxlyou're only reading a part of anything you're looking at, whcih is a problem we can't fix17:29
sappheirosindeed, the link differs.17:30
sappheirosthen please ask ubuntu to take down the wiki on their site >_>17:30
sappheirosor redircet it to yours17:30
wxlfor now it's got some old info that's useful, but eventually it will disappear17:30
sappheirosfinally, the holy grail https://phab.lubuntu.me/w/bugs/ ... only took me like ten minutse to find >_<17:30
wxlalthough there are discussions to reform the ubuntu wiki so maybe we won't17:30
wxli mean i linked it to you 10 minutes ago, so maybe not17:30
sappheiroslol did you?17:30
wxlseveral times17:30
sappheirosyou did17:31
wxl>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> you're only reading a part of anything you're looking at, whcih is a problem we can't fix <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<17:31
sappheirosman wtf i should go eat something17:31
wxlmaybe a LOT of something17:31
sappheiroslol, well, i was trying to communicate the problems with the current pages i was seeing so that someone here might fix or take them down ... ...17:31
wxlthere aren't problems when you don't read carefully.17:32
sappheiroscheers17:32
sappheirosnow that's not fair to me :/17:32
wxlit's not?17:32
wxlwhat's the point of writing if we are ignored?17:32
sappheirosyeah, you're not seriously considering what i've said, e.g. how https://lubuntu.me/links/ points to http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu as the wiki17:33
sappheirosnot the lubuntu.me wiki17:33
sappheirosi.e. you ignored what i said there for example17:33
wxlit says "Read the introductory Wiki page and general help"17:34
wxlit doesn't say "everything here is valid"17:34
sappheiroswould be good to point to both wiki there i think17:35
wxlno17:35
wxlone of them is essentially an unmaintained, deprecated resource17:35
sappheirosand that's the only one you link to there17:35
sappheirosin that particular area17:36
wxli see many other links there.........17:36
sappheiroswhy is the crash intercept component disabled by default? ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport/#How_to_enable_apport )18:24
sappheirosDiscover basically doesn't work on my Dell Latitude D620. :( It's slow to the point that it's nonresponsive.18:37
lubot<teward001> sappheiros: Probably has something to do with the problem that Crash bugs tend to have private information attached when you submit them automatically, and triaging that data out of the bug is nontrivial (and crash bugs are filed by default as 'Private' bugs).18:55
lubot<teward001> also probably has to do with the time it takes some systems to 'read' the crash data and then create the submittable report.18:56
sappheirosteward: @teward001 it's not clear how commenting out 'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'], changes that18:57
lubot<teward001> because crash bugs are problem_type == "Crash"18:57
lubot<teward001> and if you don't define the specific problem_types to autodetect and autocatch, it'll assume "Capture on All Types"18:58
lubot<teward001> s/Capture on/Act on/18:58
sappheirosokay, thank you19:06
jiusknock knock.. any one home?20:46
wxlno.21:22
KamilionJust tried to install cosmic from the ISO copied to my USB stick; the installer failed while trying to unpack the squashfs23:33
wxldo you have the same problem if you don't use the USB, e.g. in a virtual machine?23:34
