[01:42] I'm wondering how stabbot does it on reddit :/ [01:42] should look, I'm sure there's documentation somewhere [16:54] hi all. I'm struggling getting ubuntu studio audio configured [16:55] my equipment. Intel HD Audio Internal, Behringer Uphoria 404HD M-Audio 88 Key Pro [16:55] i just don't understand the connections [16:57] currently have a fresh install of ubuntustudio all updated. Sound system works with local sound and streaming through utube [17:14] installing us18.10 [17:42] epsAudio: Using 18.04 or 18.10? [17:42] hold on I'll check [17:45] 18.04.1 [17:46] Okay. With 18.04, it is near impossible to use multiple audio interfaces at once without running jack from the command line. [17:46] In 18.10, we introduced a new version of Ubuntu Studio Controls that enables you to do just that. [17:47] ok well that is great to know since I have been struggling for a week trying to get this thing running. Sounds like i need to upgrade to 18.10 [17:47] That would be the easiest way. [17:48] ok. I'll be back after I get upgraded to 18.10. can I do an online upgrade? or should I download and do a fresh install? [17:48] You can do an online upgrade. [17:49] Just configure your software & updates settings to look for non-LTS versions. [17:49] ok. I'll be back later then. Thanks again [19:41] hello Eickmeyer I'm upgraded to 18.10 now. I don't have my Behringer UMC404HD hooked up yet. just my internal card. can you help me get my M-Audi Pro Key 88 playing through my internal sound card? [19:41] epsAudio: Are you trying to use it to play a MIDI synthesizer? [19:43] yes [19:44] i'll be jumping up and down if i can get sound out of it today [19:45] so my internal card is Intel HD audio and I have sound when browsing the internet video etc etc.... [19:46] desktop audio is generally entirely separate from the audio setup used to produce music [19:46] ^This. [19:47] I do understand that I was just saying to confirm that the audio card works [19:47] right [19:47] OvenWerks: He's on 18.10, I directed him to do so since he seems to want to use his internal sound card and his Behringer UMC404HD (same as mine) at the same time, which works best with 18.10's -controls. [19:48] Eickmeyer: I sort of figured ;) [19:49] I would have just used the PPA, but upgrade works too. [19:49] epsAudio: You'll need to run Ubuntu Studio Controls, make sure the ALSA-MIDI bridge is active, then start Jack from Controls and then run whatever synthesizer software you want to use. [19:49] Eickmeyer: Ok give me a sec [19:49] * OvenWerks has too many development tools set up to be upgrading every 6 mo. [19:51] Eickmeyer: Should I use "performance for CPU Governor? [19:51] An easy way to connect the M 88 is to use Patchage. I'm a fan of graphical patchbays such as Patchage. [19:51] epsAudio: When doing audio work, always. [19:52] Eickmeyer: Use the Defaults for the Audio Setup tab? [19:52] That will probably work yes [19:53] epsAudio: Yeah, that should be fine. Your UMC404HD will show up at U192k in the USB menu when you have it connected. [19:53] when you have it connected, it should just show up in the jack graph [19:53] ^That too. [19:54] Ok let me connect it first. I left it unconnected cause I thought we would do the internal audio exclusivekly first. Give me a sec to plug it in [19:54] epsAudio: You shouldn't need it to test your M 88. [19:54] * OvenWerks assumes jack has been started... [19:55] Unless the M 88 doesn't have a USB connection for whatever reason (I'm not famililar with it other than knowing it's a keyboard). [19:56] Eickmeyer: It has a usb. So UMC404HD now showing up on the Audio Setup tab [19:56] epsAudio: Cool, but if Jack is already started, no action is needed, it should just show up in Patchage. [19:56] epsAudio: Are you planning to use the internal audio for monitoring? [19:57] ok so I start/restart jack from the audio setup tab [19:57] ok [19:57] Yes. I'm planning to monitor internal audio until I can purchase some external monitors [19:58] so I'm going to fire up Patchage [19:58] epsAudio: so yu should have Jack Master set to PCH,0,0 [19:59] No USB Master, sample rate 48k or 44k1 as you wish (I prefer 48k) [20:00] Jack Master is at Intel, 0,0 playback and capture (ALC888 Analog) [20:01] I turned off USB (No USB Master) [20:01] Sample Rate 48000, Latency 42.7ms (buffer 1024) periods 2 [20:02] if you are playing a software synth real time you probably want to set Jack Latency to 128 or 256 instead of 1024 [20:02] if 128 gives too many xruns use 256 [20:03] All four checkboxes on the bottom can be checked. [20:03] Other settings (Bridge ALSA to JACK MIDI=Yes, Bridge Pulseaudio to jack = YES, Bridge USB to Jack (when plugged) = yes [20:03] Auto Start = yes [20:03] yup [20:04] changed to 5.33 buffer 128. I'm planning to play synth in real time [20:05] ok Fire Up Patchage? [20:05] patchage should show whatever audio you have plugged in as well [20:06] this setup supports hotplugging the USB audio interface. When plugged in it should just appear in patchage [20:06] epsAudio: you should notice that the MIDI ports show up twice [20:07] ok I see all kinds of stuff but i can see the UMC404HD as U192K and Key Station Pro 88, system PulseIn [20:07] I see audio ports as green, ALSA midi ports as purple and jack midi ports as red [20:08] you can use both alsamidi and jack midi at the same time. [20:08] ok [20:09] it depends on what the application you are using happens to have [20:09] Ardour will show up with jack midi ports and will need those to be conntected via other jack midi ports [20:09] so this is where I get completely confused. I don't know the difference between a Midi Through and Keystation Pro 88 Midi1 [20:09] ignore midi through [20:10] ok. that makes it easier [20:10] midi through is a system port for special appliactions :) [20:10] I moved them all the way to the bottom. [20:11] move them around to make it easy for you to read and use [20:11] they are not connected to anything [20:11] right, you have to have an application running that has midi ports to connect to [20:11] system capture 1 and 2 are conneted to PulseIn left and right [20:12] for example, Yoshimi [20:12] and U192K in connected to system playback1 and 2 [20:14] so if I'm going to play through a synth app I need to open that correct? [20:14] so if you start yoshimi [20:15] then you can "drag" a connection from you keyboard midi input to the midi in on yoshimi [20:15] right [20:15] we used to have hexter but it doesn't seem to be in my menu [20:15] should I use midi 1 or midi 2 [20:16] epsAudio: I am not seeing a midi 1 and midi 2 so I don't know [20:17] it is probably a2j:something(capture) name of keyboard [20:18] mine says a2j:Ensoniq AudioPCI [16] (capture): ES1370 [20:18] ok here is what I have . 2 Boxes (Both are titled Keystation Pro 88) Box 1 has two connectors MIDI 1 and 2, Box 2 has one connector [20:19] box 2 is a midi 1 connector [20:19] purple or red? [20:19] you probably want the red [20:19] all purple [20:20] look for thge red box called a2j [20:20] I am assuming you have started yoshimi and that it has a red midi in [20:21] I have 2 red boxes both titled AJ2 similar layout as the purple box one has midi 1 and 2, box 2 has only midi 1 [20:22] one of the boxes should have the word (capture) [20:22] the red boxes inside should be to the right [20:22] yep.. it does. I connected midi 1 to midi in on yoshimi [20:23] and .. I have sound [20:23] playing the keyboard should make sound [20:23] it does... [20:23] yoshimi comes with lots of patches (sounds) [20:23] ok I just need a good piano sound [20:24] Qsynth? [20:24] is that better than yoshimi? [20:24] does it have a good piano sound? [20:25] yoshimi is a synth, qsynth is an sf2 sound font player [20:25] so if you can find a good sf2 piano sound it will play it. [20:26] ok. You will have to excuse me I'm very new to this. I will look for an sf2 font [20:26] Studio (and fuid synth) are shipped with one or two sf2 sound fonts. [20:26] they are unfortunately hard to find :( [20:27] and qsynth does not know where they are by default [20:27] so once qsynth is started, in setup there is a sound fonts tab [20:27] I have/own ableton software and I think I get to use their yamaha font [20:28] if you know where the sound font is, just point qsynth at that and use it. [20:28] so I take it the secret is to put that font in a known file location [20:29] The default sound fonts are in /usr/share/sounds/sf2/ [20:29] OvenWerks: Thanks for all of your help. [20:29] I made a directory in my home directory named sf2 [20:29] Eickmeyer special thanks to you also [20:30] Eickmeyer: special thanks [20:31] epsAudio: No problem! I had to disappear for some chores for a bit. [20:31] I hear ya. The wifes been at me all day since I have been tinkering with this. [20:31] talk to you later guys [20:32] Eickmeyer: did what I said make sense? [20:32] OvenWerks: Yes, I followed, and apparently he did too. [20:32] Eickmeyer: the help button on -controls needs some love... [20:33] *sigh* documentation... [20:33] If you are comfortable with the wiki the -controls page could use some love too. [20:33] * Eickmeyer officially became an Ubuntu member on Thursday, btw. [20:34] the help button really applies to the System tweaks tab. It should switch to something else for Audio setup. [20:34] It also shows three pages in a row (try it) [20:35] it only shows three pages the first time [20:36] Ah the first time it is just changing sizes [20:37] * OvenWerks shuts down yoshimi, qsynth and patchage :) [20:42] Eickmeyer: congratulations! [20:42] Thanks!
