[23:12] <aNullValue> a friend of mine suggested that i add a device in xorg.conf.d to tell it to use the intel driver rather than xorg autodetecting... which has eliminated the apparent graphical problems (for at least a couple of hours), but i don't know if that's actually a "good" or proper solution
