* Dhraakellian looks into installing kubuntu onto her preexisting luks+LVM setup01:46
=== Dhraakellian is now known as Perdellian
* Perdellian doesn't see an option for decrypting sda5 in the installer01:53
Perdellianand I'm also not seeing any of my logical volumes once I do cryptsetup luksOpen02:12
* Perdellian is totes not panicking right now02:12
Perdellianhrm... does it not realize there's a VG there?02:14
Perdellianokay, *now* I'm panicking. my /boot is empty except for lost+found02:29
PerdellianI never hit the install button. where did my existing stuff go?02:30
Perdellianonly thing I can think of is that I did type my existing luks password into the PW fields for the guided encrypted lvm line before thinking better and choosing manual again02:41
Perdellianbut again, without hitting install, that shouldn't do anything02:42

valoriePerdellian: did you find your stuff?06:38
valoriebefore hitting "install" afaik nothing happens06:38
SircleQuestion: If I install windows 10, do a dual boot after installing kubuntu 18x then. But I encrypt all the harddisk while doing this (the harddish that had windows and kubuntu on it), will I have any problems while running windows?  I think the decryption is done on the fly by kubuntu OS. If windows is runing, it will not be able to decrypt.10:16
SircleI just installed windows 10 and then kubuntu 18.04. There is no grup option of kubuntu and the windows just run up. What should I do?11:40
hateballSircle: Wait for someone that knows about dual boot to show up, I guess :)11:42
hateballPossibly try #ubuntu also, if it is uefi/grub issues it should be the same regardless of DE11:43
hateballoh I see you have11:43
Sircle:)11:43
Sircleok11:43
hateballEric^ in #ubuntu tends to know these things iirc11:43
* hateball does not use Windows, has no idea :/11:44
Sirclewhy ubuntu was made? free software dont give the vendor any money11:44
hateball!foss11:44
ubottuFOSS stands for Free and Open Source Software. See !freedom for more info.11:44
hateball!freedom11:44
ubottufreedom is important. Ubuntu is as free as we can make it, which means mostly free software. See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html and  http://www.ubuntu.com/project/about-ubuntu/licensing11:44
hateballYou can choose to pay for services and development and such, this makes the vendor money. But that's better discussed in #kubuntu-offtopic :)11:45
Sirclewhy would any one work for free?11:45
BluesKajHowdy all14:27
mparillo_Why do the birds sing?16:12
BluesKajheh16:24
BluesKajhey mparillo_16:24
mparillo_Hey BluesKaj16:42
mparillo_IIRC, you do not use a bouncer so you may have missed that my 'Why do the birds sing?' was in response to 'why (sic) would any one (sic) work for free?'16:43
BluesKajhaven't used a bouncer in a while, the one i used kept crashing so i gave it up16:49
MrokiiHi. This isn't directly a problem caused by Kubuntu (I guess), but I can't get Pyside2 for Python3 installed via Synaptic, because of unmet dependencies. Did anybody on 18.10 try that?17:01
EvilRoeyhi17:32
EvilRoeyBluesKaj: hi!17:32
EvilRoeywhy did my second screen shift to a lower resolution??17:32
EvilRoeyand when I try to launch systemsettings5, the app segfaults17:33
EvilRoeyI'm on kubuntu 18.0417:33

jubo2Hello. A friend had a problem, probably something broke his SDDM (no loging screen, only a blinking text cursor in the upper-lefthand corner and the mouse cursor on an otherwise blank screen. We patched around this by installing LDXE, but that is stopping him from running LibreOffice. So I think we would like to try something to fix the SDDM19:51
jubo2We don't know what broke the SDDM19:51
valoriedoes re-installing sddm work?20:08
valoriethe only time I had problems I found that there was other dms installed somehow -- removed a lightdm and kdm!20:09
valorieonce those were removed and sddm was reinstalled everything Worked20:09
valorieldxe kept him from running libreoffice?20:10
jubo2valorie: there is not install candidate for kdm20:10
valorieright, and I have no clue how that got in there20:10
valoriethis was a couple years ago when it was still available I guess20:11
valorieapt-cache policy is your friend for finding how what is and is not involved20:11
jubo2valorie: do you know what is the relation of sddm and kdm. Are they somehow connected or are they alternatives for something?20:12
valoriekdm used to be the KDE equiv to gdm20:13
jubo2'apt show kdm' says "not a real package (virtual)"20:13
valoriethen Ubuntu went to lightdm and so did we20:13
jubo2currently he has 'sddm' and 'ldxe' installed20:14
valoriehowever, they required a CLA to work on it, and our devels didn't want to sign that, and KDE was beginning to support SDDM, so we went to that20:14
jubo2so should maybe try installing lightdm?20:14
valorieldxe isn't a DM20:14
valorie!ldxe20:14
jubo2I may have the wrong letters in there20:15
jubo2ok.. I had the wrong order of letters. I meant lxde20:15
jubo2valorie: I got him to check if /etc/sddm.conf had been touched lately (prior to his Kubuntu not giving any login screen) and that file had not been touched for months20:16
valorieLXDE is the default desktop environment of Knoppix, Lubuntu, LXLE Linux and Peppermint Linux OS - among other distributions20:16
valorieit isn't a login manager20:16
jubo2I don't know the difference between a desktop environment and a login manager. Sorry about that20:17
valoriewell, in Kubuntu the thing you see when you first login is SDDM20:17
valoriePlasma is the desktop environment20:18
valorieif you ran lubuntu (an older one) you'd see instead lxde20:18
valoriewhen you run ubuntu you see gnome20:18
jubo2ok. so LXDE is not a replacement for SDDM, but it allows him to login to a system that seems really foreign for him20:19
valorieI think that lubuntu uses lightdm as their login manager as well20:19
valorieright, probably uses lightdm20:19
valorieto make it more complicated, grub usually allows you to login to either the lxde or plasma20:20
jubo2So I gather something broke his SDDM and I would like to help him to fix it.20:20
valoriebut these days they will all be labelled ubuntu20:20
valorie!sddm20:20
valoriehmmm20:20
valorieno help text from ubottu20:21
valorie!lightdm20:21
valoriewow20:21
jubo2but isn't plasma started only after the SDDM has finished its bit? Sorry for not knowing about these things. For me Kubuntu just works20:21
jackyisn't it !dpkg $pkg20:21
jackylike20:21
jacky!dpkg sddm20:21
valoriejubo2: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SDDM will probably shed light20:22
jubo2Ok.. so Display Manager is something on top of which the Desktop Environment runs?20:23
valoriejubo2: sort of *into which* you enter the desktop environment20:36
valorienot a very big piece of code I think20:36
valoriecompared to Plasma at least20:37
QuantosHi, running KUbuntu 18.0421:22
QuantosIt seems to take it a long time to shutdown or log off21:22
QuantosI'm unable to find a timer on it21:22
QuantosNot sure what I'm looking for21:22
valorieoh, left21:43
chrisrc1111hello. i have a strange problem with sharing folders via samba. i can access some folders (security = user), but not others. in the latter case the log says "_servicenumber: couldn't find chris ...22:35
