[02:29] okay, *now* I'm panicking. my /boot is empty except for lost+found [02:30] I never hit the install button. where did my existing stuff go? [02:41] only thing I can think of is that I did type my existing luks password into the PW fields for the guided encrypted lvm line before thinking better and choosing manual again [02:42] but again, without hitting install, that shouldn't do anything === Mrokii_ is now known as Mrokii === jalcine is now known as jacky [06:38] Perdellian: did you find your stuff? [06:38] before hitting "install" afaik nothing happens [10:16] Question: If I install windows 10, do a dual boot after installing kubuntu 18x then. But I encrypt all the harddisk while doing this (the harddish that had windows and kubuntu on it), will I have any problems while running windows? I think the decryption is done on the fly by kubuntu OS. If windows is runing, it will not be able to decrypt. [11:40] I just installed windows 10 and then kubuntu 18.04. There is no grup option of kubuntu and the windows just run up. What should I do? [11:42] Sircle: Wait for someone that knows about dual boot to show up, I guess :) [11:43] Possibly try #ubuntu also, if it is uefi/grub issues it should be the same regardless of DE [11:43] oh I see you have [11:43] :) [11:43] ok [11:43] Eric^ in #ubuntu tends to know these things iirc [11:44] * hateball does not use Windows, has no idea :/ [11:44] why ubuntu was made? free software dont give the vendor any money [11:44] !foss [11:44] FOSS stands for Free and Open Source Software. See !freedom for more info. [11:44] !freedom [11:44] freedom is important. Ubuntu is as free as we can make it, which means mostly free software. See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html and http://www.ubuntu.com/project/about-ubuntu/licensing [11:45] You can choose to pay for services and development and such, this makes the vendor money. But that's better discussed in #kubuntu-offtopic :) [11:45] why would any one work for free? [14:27] Howdy all [16:12] Why do the birds sing? [16:24] heh [16:24] hey mparillo_ [16:42] Hey BluesKaj [16:43] IIRC, you do not use a bouncer so you may have missed that my 'Why do the birds sing?' was in response to 'why (sic) would any one (sic) work for free?' [16:49] haven't used a bouncer in a while, the one i used kept crashing so i gave it up [17:01] Hi. This isn't directly a problem caused by Kubuntu (I guess), but I can't get Pyside2 for Python3 installed via Synaptic, because of unmet dependencies. Did anybody on 18.10 try that? [17:32] hi [17:32] BluesKaj: hi! [17:32] why did my second screen shift to a lower resolution?? [17:33] and when I try to launch systemsettings5, the app segfaults [17:33] I'm on kubuntu 18.04 === ichoquo0Aigh9ie is now known as jalcine === jalcine is now known as jacky [19:51] Hello. A friend had a problem, probably something broke his SDDM (no loging screen, only a blinking text cursor in the upper-lefthand corner and the mouse cursor on an otherwise blank screen. We patched around this by installing LDXE, but that is stopping him from running LibreOffice. So I think we would like to try something to fix the SDDM [19:51] We don't know what broke the SDDM [20:08] does re-installing sddm work? [20:09] the only time I had problems I found that there was other dms installed somehow -- removed a lightdm and kdm! [20:09] once those were removed and sddm was reinstalled everything Worked [20:10] ldxe kept him from running libreoffice? [20:10] valorie: there is not install candidate for kdm [20:10] right, and I have no clue how that got in there [20:11] this was a couple years ago when it was still available I guess [20:11] apt-cache policy is your friend for finding how what is and is not involved [20:12] valorie: do you know what is the relation of sddm and kdm. Are they somehow connected or are they alternatives for something? [20:13] kdm used to be the KDE equiv to gdm [20:13] 'apt show kdm' says "not a real package (virtual)" [20:13] then Ubuntu went to lightdm and so did we [20:14] currently he has 'sddm' and 'ldxe' installed [20:14] however, they required a CLA to work on it, and our devels didn't want to sign that, and KDE was beginning to support SDDM, so we went to that [20:14] so should maybe try installing lightdm? [20:14] ldxe isn't a DM [20:14] !ldxe [20:15] I may have the wrong letters in there [20:15] ok.. I had the wrong order of letters. I meant lxde [20:16] valorie: I got him to check if /etc/sddm.conf had been touched lately (prior to his Kubuntu not giving any login screen) and that file had not been touched for months [20:16] LXDE is the default desktop environment of Knoppix, Lubuntu, LXLE Linux and Peppermint Linux OS - among other distributions [20:16] it isn't a login manager [20:17] I don't know the difference between a desktop environment and a login manager. Sorry about that [20:17] well, in Kubuntu the thing you see when you first login is SDDM [20:18] Plasma is the desktop environment [20:18] if you ran lubuntu (an older one) you'd see instead lxde [20:18] when you run ubuntu you see gnome [20:19] ok. so LXDE is not a replacement for SDDM, but it allows him to login to a system that seems really foreign for him [20:19] I think that lubuntu uses lightdm as their login manager as well [20:19] right, probably uses lightdm [20:20] to make it more complicated, grub usually allows you to login to either the lxde or plasma [20:20] So I gather something broke his SDDM and I would like to help him to fix it. [20:20] but these days they will all be labelled ubuntu [20:20] !sddm [20:20] hmmm [20:21] no help text from ubottu [20:21] !lightdm [20:21] wow [20:21] but isn't plasma started only after the SDDM has finished its bit? Sorry for not knowing about these things. For me Kubuntu just works [20:21] isn't it !dpkg $pkg [20:21] like [20:21] !dpkg sddm [20:22] jubo2: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SDDM will probably shed light [20:23] Ok.. so Display Manager is something on top of which the Desktop Environment runs? [20:36] jubo2: sort of *into which* you enter the desktop environment [20:36] not a very big piece of code I think [20:37] compared to Plasma at least [21:22] Hi, running KUbuntu 18.04 [21:22] It seems to take it a long time to shutdown or log off [21:22] I'm unable to find a timer on it [21:22] Not sure what I'm looking for [21:43] oh, left [22:35] hello. i have a strange problem with sharing folders via samba. i can access some folders (security = user), but not others. in the latter case the log says "_servicenumber: couldn't find chris ... [22:35] the user exists and the password is correct. file persmissions are also correct
