studio-user629Is this thing on?01:43
krytarikDepeeends!01:45
OvenWerkszero, one and maybe?01:45
studio-user629New Ubuntu Studio user looking for basic help with audio production. I was trying to follow https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/AudioHandbook but not having success01:46
studio-user629And not sure where to go for that kind of basic introduction and trouble shooting01:46
OvenWerkswhat is or is not working? which version of Studio are you using01:46
studio-user629Downloaded the other day, whichever version that is...01:47
OvenWerkscat /etc/os-release shows?01:48
OvenWerkssecond line is fine01:48
OvenWerks or the last01:48
studio-user629I'm trying to get recording to work, I can get Audacity to record external source but not internal (Hydrogen). Also can't get Audacity to play to speakers (though Hydrogen does)01:49
studio-user62918.1001:49
OvenWerksso you have jack running?01:49
studio-user629yes01:49
OvenWerkshow did you start jack?01:49
studio-user629qjackctl01:50
OvenWerksok, so when you start jack it takes control of te audio device and nothing else can use it.01:50
OvenWerkshave you tried using ubuntustudio-controls to start jack?01:51
studio-user629ok01:51
studio-user629no I haven't01:52
OvenWerks-controls allows more than one device to be used at a time and sets the pulse jack bridge up for you.01:52
studio-user629need to start from command line?01:53
OvenWerksyou would have to set audacity to use jack as it's audio device rather than either pulse or alsa01:53
OvenWerkslook in your menu system-> ubuntu studio controls01:53
OvenWerksYa it needs to show in the audio production menu as well I know :)01:54
studio-user629OK, use defaults?01:54
OvenWerksprobably01:54
OvenWerksdo you also have a second audio device?01:55
studio-user629not sure what you mean01:55
OvenWerksare you using only the internal computer audio or do you also have a USB audio device01:55
studio-user629Yes the latter01:56
studio-user629I was able to record that but not internal01:56
studio-user629In Ubuntu Studio Controls I hit Start or Restart Jack, nothing obvious then happens01:56
OvenWerksok default will work and should show your internal audio as system and your usb as something else (depending on what your USB calls it self.)01:57
OvenWerksprobably not :)01:57
OvenWerks if you open patchage you should see your devices01:57
OvenWerks(you should also be able to see it in qjackctl connections but you would have to restart qjackctl to see it there01:58
studio-user629In Patchage I see PulseOut-01, PulseIn, Midi Through, system, UA-4FX (the sound interface), and a2j01:59
studio-user629PulseOut-01 connected to system and PulseIn connected to system02:00
OvenWerksok sounds good, your Pulseout should be connected to system 1 & 2 as well I think02:00
OvenWerksgood02:00
OvenWerksthat will allow anything connected to pulse to still sound in your computer out02:01
studio-user629PulseOut-1 front-left,right to system playback_1,_202:01
OvenWerkspulse being your desktop sound02:01
studio-user629PulseIn front-left,right to system capture_1,202:01
OvenWerksso skype or firefox will still work.02:01
OvenWerksyou will probably have to connect anything that goes to the UA manually.02:02
studio-user629there also is PulseIn-01 which is not connected to anything02:02
OvenWerks Thas odd, it should be connected to your system capture 102:03
OvenWerksif you have one.02:03
studio-user629PulseIn is connected to system capture, not PulseIn-0102:04
studio-user629PulseOut-01 is connected to system playback, there is no PulseOut02:05
OvenWerksAh, ok 01 is a bug02:05
OvenWerksthere is an u-p dated version of -controls at the ubuntustudio -dev PPA02:05
OvenWerkshttps://launchpad.net/~ubuntustudio-dev/+archive/ubuntu/autobuild02:06
studio-user629Do I need it?02:07
OvenWerkswhat has happened is that the controls back end has for some reason been started twice02:07
OvenWerksyou can ignore the 01 pulse and use things the way they are02:08
studio-user629but there is no PulseOut02:08
OvenWerksbut it is not that hard to install the new version02:08
OvenWerks I tend to download the deb file and just install that02:09
OvenWerkshttps://launchpad.net/~ubuntustudio-dev/+archive/ubuntu/autobuild/+files/ubuntustudio-controls_1.7+git-0~201810210006~ubuntu18.10.1_all.deb02:11
studio-user629one sec...02:11
rsholmesok, can you send that url again? I was on another computer02:13
OvenWerkshttps://launchpad.net/~ubuntustudio-dev/+archive/ubuntu/autobuild/+files/ubuntustudio-controls_1.7+git-0~201810210006~ubuntu18.10.1_all.deb02:14
rsholmesthanks02:14
rsholmesDo I need to stop jack?02:14
OvenWerksno, but after you install it yu will want restart controls and restart jack from that.02:15
studio-user629I get the same thing, PulseIn and PulseOut-01 and PulseIn-01 and no PulseOut02:18
OvenWerksyou may have to logout and in.02:18
studio-user629(sorry about talking from two different places...)02:18
studio-user629well, after logout and login I now have PulseIn, PulseIn-01, PulseIn-02, and PulseOut-0202:20
OvenWerkswow02:20
studio-user629restart?02:21
OvenWerksyou can try but that shouldn't happen02:21
studio-user629all right, after restart there is just PulseIn and PulseOut02:25
OvenWerksgood... ya that makes sense the update was to both the GUI part and the backend.02:26
OvenWerksSo the old version was still running02:26
OvenWerksThe new version looks for other instances and tells them to die02:27
studio-user629OK, now Audacity is recording Hydrogen...02:27
OvenWerkscool02:27
studio-user629but does not play on speakers02:28
OvenWerkswhere are the speakers connected to?02:28
studio-user629Internal laptop speakers02:28
OvenWerksso system playback 01 and 0202:28
studio-user629In audicity prefs Playback is HDA Intel MID: HDMI 0 (hw:0,3)02:29
studio-user629ah, changed to default and now working02:30
OvenWerksso alsa, you want to change that to either pulse or jack02:30
OvenWerksdefault will be pulse02:30
studio-user629yep02:30
studio-user629very low level on the recording though... set to 0dB in volume control02:34
OvenWerksyou can also in Audacity under Edit->preferences->Devices change Host from ALSA to Jack02:35
OvenWerkswith pulse you can increase level above 0 if you like02:35
studio-user629only -24 on Audacity monitoring02:36
OvenWerksYa that low02:36
OvenWerksis that from a mic?02:36
studio-user629no, from Hydrogen02:37
OvenWerksso hydrogen to pulse to audacity?02:38
OvenWerksis it actually connected that way02:38
OvenWerks(using patchage)02:38
studio-user629Oh, I see... it was system input not Hydrogen02:38
studio-user629using the audacity controls02:39
OvenWerksso you were hearing hydrogen through the mic maybe02:39
studio-user629I don't see audacity in Patchage, is it under some other name?02:39
OvenWerksit will be pulse02:39
studio-user629Hm, Hydrogen is connected to system and PortAudio02:40
OvenWerksunless you use jack for it in which case it will be ya port audio02:40
studio-user629OK, making sense now02:40
studio-user629Thanks, starting to get somewhere02:41
OvenWerksit is a bit more manual to do things, but many more things are possible02:42
studio-user629ok, now how do I connect the external audio?02:44
OvenWerksit should be there02:45
OvenWerksjust connect to that insead of system02:45
studio-user629I see UA-4FX MIDI but not audio02:45
OvenWerkshm02:46
OvenWerkswhich audio ports do you see?02:47
studio-user629in Patchage see PulseOut, system, Hydrogen, PulseIn, PortAudio02:47
OvenWerksAnd your USB device is pulgged in I guess if you can see the MIDI part02:48
studio-user629yes... previously when using qjackctl I was getting the audio02:48
OvenWerksin controls in the audio setup tab are all four lines at the bottom checked?02:49
studio-user629yes02:49
OvenWerksThe second line from the top should be No usb master02:49
studio-user629yes02:50
OvenWerksdo you know if your device is one of those that does 44k1 only02:50
studio-user629is that sample rate02:50
OvenWerksmaybe try 48000 then02:51
studio-user629ah, that looks promising02:53
studio-user629It connects to system02:53
OvenWerksyes you can do it that way if you don't need the internal audio02:54
studio-user629oh wait, that's in. out is connected to nothing02:54
OvenWerksthough you can also use Connect Other Audio interfaces to add the internal02:55
OvenWerkscan you run:02:56
OvenWerkscd /tmp && wget http://jackaudio.org/downloads/adevices.sh && bash ./adevices.sh02:56
studio-user629UA4FX in is connected to system playback, I don't hear anything and it doesn't get to Audacity02:56
studio-user629OK I did that02:58
OvenWerksand post the output to pastebin?02:58
studio-user629how do I do that?02:58
OvenWerksthen put the url to the paste here so I can look02:58
OvenWerksin the terminal under edit select all02:59
OvenWerksthen copy02:59
studio-user629pastebin.com?02:59
OvenWerks then goto pastebin.com03:00
OvenWerksand paste it there03:00
OvenWerksat the bottom there is a create new paste button03:01
studio-user629pastebin.com/5Djkhj6M03:01
studio-user629https://pastebin.com/5Djkhj6M03:02
OvenWerksThat shows both an input and an output for the UA4FX03:04
OvenWerksit shows they are both connected to jack.03:04
OvenWerkscan you also paste the output of jack_lsp -c03:05
studio-user629after switching to 48k they appear on Patchage but not getting to Audacity03:05
OvenWerksAudacity is odd.03:06
OvenWerksAudacity only shows its ports when recording03:06
OvenWerks or playing back03:06
OvenWerks so to record in audacity put it in pause then revord then make connections the unpause03:06
OvenWerks*record03:07
studio-user629I did that and still don't see it in Patchage03:07
studio-user629wait...03:08
studio-user629yeah, UA4FX-in is connected to PortAudio, not getting it at Audacity03:09
OvenWerksit will show as portaudio03:09
OvenWerksaudacity has a different look than when I last used it03:10
studio-user629Audacity shows system, PulseOut, and Hydrogen as inputs03:10
OvenWerksCan you connect it with patchage?03:11
studio-user629I just restarted audacity and now it shows UA4FX as an input03:12
studio-user629and it records it03:12
OvenWerksgood03:13
studio-user629OK... thanks!03:13
studio-user629calling that enough progress for tonight I think03:13
OvenWerksyour welcome03:14
OvenWerksI will go have supper now I think :)03:14
studio-user629OK, thanks again03:14
M_aDSame question as yesterday:  i have a older Lenovo Thinkpad T410 and wonder if it's sufficient to use it for audio/music production09:03
OvenWerksM_aD: I don't know what a T410 is in particular. "Audio production" is quite vaque too. There is a difference between recording 20 channels of audio in a live situation and using a computer as a live synth. almost anything should be able to handle the first, but setting up to use as a live synth takes more cpu and set up to get good low latency performance.17:16
M_aDThe T410 is a laptop: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/c5FWKYzdgH/17:29
M_aDi'd like to use it mostely to work with Ardour, use samples or create own samples to then create tracks combined with yoshimi or zynadd to creat pads and synth sequences17:32
studio-user967Hi, What is presentation mode?17:35
OvenWerksM_aD: Honestly I don't know. I do know that there are people on the Linux Audio Users mailing list that have used Thinkpads and may know more about how far they can go. Audio is not about speed so much as stability.20:53
M_aDOvenWerks: ok, no problem. Thanks anyway. Maybe it's best to just install Ubuntu Studio and see how it goes.21:56
OvenWerksif you have the laptop already ya, just try it. Even running live from a usb stick.21:58
OvenWerksYou can mount the drive as a place to save projects to.21:58
THEB1GMANhello?22:43
THEB1GMANHey guys so I'm trying to install ubuntu studio as a dual boot setup on my windows machine, but it doesn't work. I make the bootable flash drive and get through the installation process until I get to the actual installation type screen where I choose how I'm gonna do my partitions, I select my free space I made (100+gb) and then click the plus icon to make a partition for ubuntu studio to install to but all that happens is 22:46
THEB1GMANons go grey22:46
THEB1GMANand it stalls forever22:46
THEB1GMANI think the problem may be that I already have 4 primary partitions on my hard drive22:46
THEB1GMANbuy my hard drive is GPT not MBR (or whatever the old system was called)22:47
THEB1GMANSo I can have as many partitions as I want up to 12822:47
THEB1GMANbut for some reason the ubuntu installer still doesn't want to make a new partition, any ideas?22:47
