apemanI did a fresh Ubuntu 18.04 LTS install with 4 partitions on SSD: ESP, /, swap, and /home. HDD mounted separately as storage drive. I was just wondering whether partitioning can ever be the cause of other software problems. Like firefox is bugged every startup, teamviewer hangs, new GTX 2080 is severely underperforming. Or is it just a perfectly normal experience for things to not work smoothly out of the box?09:39
ducassezetheroo: try /lib/systemd/system09:40
ducassezetheroo: or /etc/systemd/system09:41
zetherooducasse: ok thanks - found it in the first one09:41
ducassezetheroo: ypu could also have found it with 'locate freeradius.service09:42
Rodenapeman,  yes, it can.09:43
zetherooducasse: The issue I am having is that Freeradius requires /tmp/radiusd to exist and to be owned by user freerad. I had three lines in the /etc/init.d/freeradius file which took care of this on boot, but since upgrading to 18.04 it's no longer working.09:44
zetherooSo I suspected that the /etc/init.d/freeradius file is no longer being executed on boot09:44
zetherooIs this correct?09:44
apemanRoden: But why/how? Does some software assume things are on the same partition?09:45
apemanI mean at least they're on the same SSD09:46
Rodenyou're making a broad statement, apeman .09:46
Rodenif you're looking only at installing apps that have been reviewed, then the range of possible issues is reduced.09:46
RodenIf you're only installing minor packages and libraries, the risks continue to be reduced.09:46
ducassezetheroo: if there is a systemd service with the same name, maybe not - i can't say for sure09:47
Rodenbut when you have some massive software (which I'm sure you do), it's just possible that it could add a level of difficulty to an error somewhere along the line.09:47
zetherooducasse: right, that would make sense. Now I am wondering if those three commands can be placed into the service file09:48
RodenI think it's not likely that you will encounter problems based on the partition layout you've used.  You haven't given much info about them....09:48
Rodenwhat is ESP?09:48
apemanEFI system partition. Ubuntu is booting in UEFI mode so it's required.09:49
RodenThose partitions seem fairly standard so I have no reason to believe you'll get in trouble.  I wonder if you can resize them all?09:50
RodenI'm kind of on a refresher course, myself.09:50
RodenIt probably solves more problems than it fixes to have multiple partitions like that.09:50
apemanWell the ESP is 550MB, / is 30GB, swap is 32GB (I have 32GB RAM), the rest is /home. I can reinstall everything in one unified partition if necessary09:50
Rodenmaybe use a bigger swap09:51
Rodenso /home is like at least 250 gb09:51
apeman~450GB09:51
Rodenall the less reason to worry09:51

funkyjiveI had working 5.1 sound via intel audio on my ubuntu 18.04 system up to and after updating with the recent kernel updates and such.  I plugged in a USB headset to use temporarily.  It seems that my sound system has gone totally wrong.  Now I can only get sound to work via the USB.16:35
funkyjiveI think what happened is that when I plugged in the USB (which I had done before and it worked no problem) something new in the system wiped out my old configuration16:35
funkyjiveThe sound system seems to be pointed to the S/PDIF -- which is not what I am using.  I have 3 analog plugs to my speakers16:36
funkyjiveso my question is: how do I adjust my sound system to not use S/PDIF but to use the analog jacks?16:37
funkyjiveI have been google searching, but I haven't been able to land on the right terms for how to configure this16:38

Shasirax_Thanks btw18:41
pragmaticenigmaShasirax_: Settings for torrent clients are all unique, different network setups, computer setups, and so on affect what you will desire for those settings. Seedboxes can usually max out stuff like that. A computer on a home network with other comptuers, should take a more concervative approach18:42

pragmaticenigmaShasirax_: sounds like some trial and error to find settings that work best for you. You may also want to research alternative clients that might be better suited to handle your needs. === daniel is now known as Guest33211
OerHeksthere is a toughbook forum, maybe they have a fix http://www.toughbooktalk.com/viewforum.php?f=39&sid=f826e657bb6e047c9a577b2bf2495bd719:35
OerHeksas yours seems old, from 2008, i wonder why it does not calibrate19:36
deadromeh, usb3 port on docking station actually only is usb2 in system. moved ssd on usb3 adapter to notebook's port -> vroom! 550MB/s19:36
* deadrom <3 SSDs19:36
qwebirc15728Yes it's not that young, but it does calibrate under 16.04 this is lost when moving to 18.04 so I assumed that there were some changes as how the x driver works from a version to another... I noticed that whatever I put in those files , it doesn't change anything, even values that should prevent Ubuntu from booting !19:38
thagabeUploaded file: https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/babdf38079eba3da4044a3012d5655ee/pasted.txt19:38
thagabeAny one experience issues with ubuntu server not logging you in? I finished setting up an lxd container and everything. I reboot and boom cannot log in to either root or my unprivilage account anymore???!?!?!?!?! When i go to recovery mode i can easily log-in there no problem. Ive tried resetting the password multiple times and nothing works19:38
lordcirth_thagabe, did you install an LDAP tool or something?  What is in /etc/nsswitch?19:39
lordcirth_er, /etc/nsswitch.conf19:39
ntdnacc, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/180725019:39
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1807250 in linux (Ubuntu) "At some point in the 18.04 cycle, /sys/bus/iio has disappeared from my system" [Undecided,Confirmed]19:40
qwebirc15728I'm browsing through the forum you shares... trying to figure if there is something that looks like it...19:40
thagabelordcirth_ Nothing new was installed. Clean install of ubuntu server w/ docker and lxd. Created a 18.04 container and set up ark (game) server [made it so systemd would start the server on container boot]. Rebooted my server and now i cant login at the login manager19:42
lordcirth_thagabe, login manager?  What about through a tty?19:42
thagabei meant tty19:42
thagabeTried tty1-519:42
thagabenothing19:42
lordcirth_Ah, ok.  So in recovery mode, look through /var/log/auth.log and syslog19:42
qwebirc15728In fact, I'm at the step where I try to figure what changed in the evdev driver between the two versions... I noticed that 18.04  is always 64b while my 16.04 was I386 32b, I don't know if it could impact19:43
thagabeWhat should i keep an eye out for? lordcirth_19:43
lordcirth_thagabe, well, auth.log is login attempts.  So any sort of auth failure should show up there.  syslog should show if something was crashing19:44
qwebirc15728So any idea ?19:46
thagabe@lordc19:47
lordcirth_thagabe, ?19:47
thagabelordcirth_: I see the login attempts but I'm not seeing why.19:49
deadromqwebirc15728, not what you wanna hear but file a bug report and pick an adequate severity19:50
lordcirth_thagabe, it says auth failed?19:50
thagabeyes19:50
lordcirth_thagabe, look in /etc/nssswitch.conf and see if there's a source listed other than 'files'19:50
thagabewait a second19:50
lordcirth_It might be trying to handle logins using something other than standard /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow19:51
qwebirc15728<deadrom> Do you have any idea where I can file a bug report for Ubuntu ? That might help me as I'm more Debian and iSeries system user usually19:51
thagabedoes a unit file on systemd inside a container affect the base os?19:52
OerHeks!bug19:52
MespYeah after a kernel upgrade and shit I have no idea why the card is no recognized by ubuntu19:52
ubottuIf you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please report it using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs.19:52
thagabebecause if it does then maybe the unit file might be trying to do something19:52
thagabeeven when the container is off19:52
thagabealso19:52
lordcirth_thagabe, no, userspace in a container should never affect the outside19:52
lordcirth_thagabe, however, is it possible you accidentally put the .unit file in the host instead of the guest?19:52
thagabeno19:53
thagabei did followed this guide and maybe this is why its not working19:53
thagabehttps://hostadvice.com/how-to/how-to-install-an-ark-server-on-an-ubuntu-18-04-vps-or-dedicated-server/19:53
thagabeunder the open file limits I did all that on the host os not the container as containers dont have filesystem access19:54
qwebirc15728<ubottu> Thank you that's a step...19:55
lordcirth_thagabe, the "/etc/pam.d/common-session" change seems likely to be related19:55
lordcirth_thagabe, try commenting out sessionrequired        pam_limits.so in that file and rebooting19:55
thagabeyeah that was going to be my first guess19:56
thagabeWill do once I get home and have access to the server19:56
thagabeThank you for your time19:56
qwebirc15728<deadrom> I have nothing aganst raising a bug report, that's part of the life of open source OS, it's fine. Maybe we will figure, I could have remain on 16.04 but there some packages I'm looking for where not available anymore :O19:56
thagabeWhat does the pam_limits.so do anyways?19:57
qwebirc15728Thank you all to have taken some of your time to think with me, and I wish you all the best !19:58
lordcirth_thagabe, https://linux.die.net/man/8/pam_limits19:59
thagabelordcirth_ for "/etc/security/limits.conf" Do i need to put the "*" before soft/hard?19:59
thagabebecause i didnt19:59
thagabeand i assumed that was just formatting19:59
deadromqwebirc15728, please carry on the torch :20:00
deadrom:)20:00
lordcirth_thagabe, lol.  Yes, the * is needed.  It means 'all'20:00
thagabeyikes!20:00
thagabeerrors20:00
thagabeI will add the "*"20:00
OerHeksuse /etc/security/limits.d  instead of editing the actual /etc/security/limits.conf file. https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/457458/issue-on-updating-limits-conf-on-ubuntu-server-18-0420:00

thagabeif that doesnt fix my issue ill run to commenting out the pam line20:01
thagabeThank you for the help lordcirth_20:01
lordcirth_Also a good point, .d directories are good20:01
lordcirth_np, let me know if it works20:01
OerHekshe found out it does not work20:01
thagabelordcirth_ Can I open firewall ports for specific lxd containers or do i do that as the whole os?20:02
thagabebecause right now im leading towards having to open up ports for my container, the base system, and my router20:03
thagabeluckily all of these run linux20:03
lordcirth_thagabe, if your container doesn't have a firewall set up, you shouldn't need to do anything there20:03
lordcirth_How are you connecting your container to your LAN?20:03
MespOn Ubuntu 18.10 should I use Bumblebee or Optimus because my GPU isn't recognized, only the integrated one is.20:03
OerHeksMesp, still no luck after bios update?20:04
OerHeksbumblebee is old, prime is current.20:04
MespI couldn't do a BIOS update because I need to install Windows20:04

OerHeksoh, install windows or use freedos maybe?20:05

lordcirth_Or try F820:08
OerHeksmaybe fwupdmgr works for you too https://itsfoss.com/update-firmware-ubuntu/20:08
MespI can try with F820:08
MespI will be back once I try20:08
thagabelordcirth_ I'm new to lxd (and low level linux in general) but after the installed installed lxd I created a new container from the latest img of 18.04 and are working fully on root. I have not set up any networking and using the default br0 to my container20:09
Mesp_I will try to reinstall the iso on the USB20:12
lordcirth_Mesp_, how did you install it the first time? dd?20:13

wasser2flascheHey, I want to watch Netflix on Chromium and saw that you need something called widevine for that. Debian offers a .deb package containing this, so can I just install Debian's package on my Ubuntu or is that incompatible?22:18
wasser2flascheI have downloaded it manually from Debian's website, can I install it with dpki -i or would that be bad because it is made for Debian and not Ubuntu?22:18
wasser2flasche*dpkg -i22:19
OerHeksno, just enable DRM on FF and install a codec  https://linuxconfig.org/watch-netflix-on-ubuntu-18-04-bionic-beaver-linux22:20
OerHeksand google chrome should do this native, without hw rendering22:21
wasser2flascheSo there is no possibility to make Chromium work with Netflix?22:21
OerHeksi have no clue with chromium and widevine22:23
wasser2flascheOh well, I don't like Firefox but better than nothing... Thank you OerHeks22:28
