Limuxic | @todobarato - do you still need help with the usb device? | 17:41 |
thaurwylth | I tried to create a USB stick from ISO (18.10) and use it on a Windows 10 laptop and also boot from it, but nothing seems to work. Autorun does not work when it's plugged in and none of the files listed on the drive open in any meaningful way. During boot screen I can select the stick as a boot media, but that simply causes a small delay and then the choice for boot media appears again. Only if I choose the laptop's ... | 17:54 |
thaurwylth | ... own hard drive (which hosts the Windows boot) do I get to progress. | 17:54 |
thaurwylth | I understand that there are many different things that could be at fault here. But let me ask this. Is there some sort of maximum size for a bootable stick media? I tried to create this on a 32 GB stick. | 17:55 |
OvenWerks | I have used a 32G USB stick with no problems | 17:57 |
Limuxic | I think it very much depends on which program you used to create the bootable disk, and which operating system | 17:57 |
thaurwylth | Win 10, first Rufus and then UNetbootin. | 17:58 |
OvenWerks | Have you checked the md5sum? | 17:59 |
OvenWerks | I use dd to put the image on the USB stick | 17:59 |
Limuxic | "Is there some sort of maximum size for a bootable stick media? I tried to create this on a 32 GB stick." I don't think there's a limit | 18:00 |
thaurwylth | You mean sum of the burned image? I don't know of an easy way to do that on Windows. The source ISO has correct md5 and sha1. | 18:01 |
Limuxic | It sometimes depends on the quality of the usb disk itself | 18:01 |
thaurwylth | Now I tried to create a DD version with Rufus, the results are the same. Boot from USB does not work and nothing meaningful can be done on the stick while booted to Windows. | 18:39 |
Limuxic | I suggest trying with another usb stick, sometimes I have the same issues, changing the stick helped solve this kind of problem | 18:43 |
thaurwylth | Let's see... This might take some time. | 18:43 |
Limuxic | It doesn't guarantee success, but it will eliminate that possibility | 18:44 |
Limuxic | Also, if possible, try using an old CD for writing the image and booting with it | 18:45 |
