Sven_vBmy computer with xenial has an internal bluetooth antenna which I usually rfkill because it doesn't have much range anyway. I use a USB bluetooth antenna instead, but when I unplug it, bluetoothd keeps running, which is bas because it won't work with the USB antenna again until it's manually stopped or restarted. is there a way to make it quit when no antennae are active anymore?01:10
Sven_vB*which is bad01:11
murthySven_vB: hi01:15
Sven_vBmurthy, hi :)01:16
murthySven_vB: you can disable the bluetooth service and see if that solves your problem01:17
murthySven_vB: do you know how to disable the Bluetooth service?01:18
Sven_vBmurthy, nope, I usually systemctl mask services that annoy me, which would make the USB antenna not work in this case. I'll read about how to just normally disable a service and the implications.01:20
murthySven_vB: you could also blacklist the module used by the internal bluetooth device01:22

Sven_vByeah, that might be an idea01:23

Sven_vBcan't find it in lsusb or lspci though. that's strange.01:24
Sven_vBoh. I looked on a slightly different computer which indeed doesn't have internal bluetooth. however, bluetooth.service is still active there, even with no BT antenna at all.01:27
Sven_vBso unloading antenna drivers probably won't help. :(01:27

Sven_vBmurthy, on both devices I need to manually stop BT before or after plugging in my USB BT antenna to make it work. (in the latter case also start it again)01:54
sorin-mihaiLost_Goat, also, check the config in the gateway/router, are you sure that the IP you set as fixed in the system isn't in use by some other device or set as fixed for a different mac than the one in your system?01:54
Lost_Goatsorin-mihai, yes i know because only the first 7 addresses are used from the static pool that i have, ill have to check to see if i can clear the mac table somehow01:55
sorin-mihaimaybe restart networkmanager in the end, shouldn't need to reboot01:56
Sven_vBmurthy, both are netbooks. both run xenial. they're basically clones except for the hostname, I switch them around to have one supply BT audio while the other one recharges its battery.01:56
Sven_vBwell and except for minor hardware differences like one having internal BT01:57
murthySven_vB: when you say bluetooth device, you mean a bluetooth adapter or a device like bluetooth headset?01:59
Sven_vBI was referring to BT antennae.02:00
sorin-mihaiso 2 netbooks one with internal and one with external bt adapter. that is easy. but how many bt devices and how many connected to each adapter at the same time?02:01
sorin-mihaimost headphones for example don't witch easily from one bt adapter to another, even if they are able to remember both02:03
sorin-mihais/witch/switch02:03
Sven_vBI use one USB BT antenna that I plug into the netbook I'm carrying, so my headset can always connect to that same antenna. back in Ubuntu trusty times I had 2 USB BT antennae and my netbooks dis/connected based on power supply. with xenial, PulseAudio started to do something that made my headphones not like PA's connection attempts, so now PA has to accept theirs.02:04
Sven_vBI hope that goes away in bionic so I won't have to turn my headphones off and on again when I switch netbooks.02:05
sorin-mihaiyou should try it from a live usb, can't say for sure02:06
Sven_vB(not just laziness, it also takes about a minute for them to turn off and on.)02:06
murthySven_vB: ah, that happens for me too02:07
Sven_vBsorin-mihai, sorry for not reading earlier, didn't notice you meant me not Lost_Goat.02:07
sorin-mihaiheh, PA doesn't play nice with my headpones regardless of distro or version, so i just use the phone. i'd say that you need to investigate on PA02:07
murthySven_vB: mine sometimes defaults to hsp/hfp instead a2dp, I remove and repair and its solved02:08
Deihmosthe gnome desktop environment isn't as nice as unity02:09
murthyDeihmos: I liked unity02:09
murthybut with a different theme02:09
Deihmosi liked it too02:10

JPSmanI came in here to ask a question about how Nautilus handles files - specifically cut / paste and if you do it to multiple files, does it erase the source document AFTER its done pasteing it in the destination directory02:44
JPSmanbut I'm pretty sure I can do such a thing with mv02:45
tomreyni would assume cut + paste does exactly this, mv.02:45
undeclaredIs there any sort of filesystem that anyone has heard of - where I can have a multiple hard drives in one single mountpoint, but files are completely on one disk at a time.. eg, if that drive fails, there is no raid array to rebuild, you just lose whatever was on that drive?02:45
JPSmanthey are within the same hard drive, but different file systems02:45
hggdhwell, if it were to erase-before-copying this would be rather destructive02:46
tomreynundeclared: sounds like raid-0 kind of02:47
JPSmansure, I know.  but I want it to erase-after-copying for multiple files.02:47
undeclaredtomreyn: well, kind of like raid.. but I don't want to lose everything on all drives if one drive fails02:47

undeclaredand I don't want to rebuild either, the data is not important02:48
tomreynundeclared: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/329790/how-to-merge-multiple-hard-drives02:48
JPSmanso, its just one hard disk, but two file systems, and very little free space.  I want to mv the file from one to the other.  will it delete the old file once its done being moved, to free up space so that the whole moving operation can occur?02:49
undeclaredthanks tomreyn, reading02:50
tomreynJPSman: it will need sufficient unallocated space on the target to start the operation. when it's finished, the source file will be gone. what else would you expect?02:51
tomreynJPSman: you cannot magically save or recover space by just the process of moving a file across different file systems.02:52
JPSmantomreyn, that the operation would attempt to copy the entire source directory to the target directory before removing the files from the source directory02:52
Sven_vBtomreyn, thanks!02:53
JPSmanbut if its removing the source file each time, then the operation should be successful02:53
JPSmanthank you :)02:53
tomreynit'll move files individually, creating the target direcotry first, then move one file, i.e. create on target, then delete on source, then the next file etc.02:53
JPSmantomreyn, thank you, thats exactly what I wanted to hear! :)02:55

JPSmanthats true of both mv in terminal and cut/paste in Nautilus?02:55
tomreynbut if you're this low on unallocated space you should really work towards more space (by deleting unneeded files or adding more storage), since these file systems will be slow.02:55
tomreynif journalled, that is02:55

MJCDCan I extend the time sudo retains my priveledges without asking again for the password?09:11
MJCDIdeally i'd like to make it only ask once per "session"/login/logout cycle09:11
blackflowMJCD: yes, a setting, which I forgot OTOH, in sudoers. Check the manpage it shold be listed there09:11

MJCDquick question09:16
MJCDIf you specify a negative value, the timeout will never expire. E.g. Defaults env_reset,timestamp_timeout=09:16
MJCDwhen it says never but it appears to be tied to sessions like I wanted yeah?09:16
MJCDI'm just changing it to not time out iwthin that session09:16
MJCDbecause obviously never expiring would be incredibly insecure haha09:18
MJCDbetween sessions that is09:18
MJCDcool yeah I just tested the 2 values work together flawlessly09:23

blackflowanddam: I don't know what that is, but you mentioned RDP, and in that context I thought you had a running OS you can log into. Anyway, to your orig question, I _think_ but am not 100% sure that the server ISO offers an initial menu from which you can select rescue mode. If not, and you can use any random ISO, then try sysrescuecd.10:44
blackflowanddam: or simply use the deskto ISO, you said RDP, so you have gui?  what do you need to rescue anyway?10:45
anddamI had the virtual disk expanded so I need to resize the ext partition10:49
anddamblackflow: that's what surprised me, the -live-server-amd64.iso only had "Install Ubuntu" option, apart disk testing entries. I expected an ISO with "-live-" in its name to have a live system10:50

bunty-mateyi wanted to copy a boot partition to another disk, so as to make it bootable again, cos i think theres a hardware problem12:25

tomreynif gparted fails to read info on a partition i'd rather assume the partitiont able is either in a format it doesn't support (which probably also wont work with linux then) or that the partition table is broken.12:25
Meilimique: does the laptop have a "caps-lock" indicator led? If so, while it is in this state, see if you can turn on and off the capslock, just to make sure it is a video problem and not the entire laptop being stalled12:26

migueMeili: yes, it has... but it has same behavoir... not respondig to toggling on or off12:27

tomreynthe graphical file browser handles file systems, partitions only indirectly.12:27

miguelotuspsychje: it is the same, but descriptions is "VGA compatible controller", and the UNCLAIMED has "Display Controller" description12:52
tomreynprocessor.nocst=1  elevator=noop12:52
miguetomreyn: hi :)... i put these to try resolve this problem :(12:52
tomreynmigue: did it help?12:53
miguetomreyn: but "elevator=noop" is about ssd12:53
miguetomreyn: "procesor.nocst=1"... i do not remember adding it...12:54
tomreynhttps://www.kernel.org/doc/html/v4.15/admin-guide/kernel-parameters.html describes "procesor.nocst"12:55
miguetomreyn: but it not help... :(12:55
miguetomreyn: i will see12:55
tomreynit IS ACPI related, so what you'Re saying could be correct, but you should know12:55
tomreyn(since this can just as well break things)12:56
tomreynC states are related to suspend / resume12:57
miguetomreyn: yes... i remember now... but i do all modifications via grub edit...12:57
tomreynnot this one, unless you did it during the latest boot, and only used suspend + resume since12:58
tomreynyou can check whether you have it on the grub menu still: grep -F processor.nocst /boot/grub/grub.cfg12:59
tomreynmigue: either way, i suggest you compare general reliability and suspend / resume with and without processor.nocst=1 set13:01
miguetomreyn: "grep -F ..." output is empty... i must have added in the last boot13:02
tomreynmigue: as well as to plan to migrate to current hardware13:02
tomreynmigue: i agree13:02
miguetomreyn: i will test general reliability...13:03
miguetomreyn: but i can't to plan to migrate...13:04
miguetomreyn: also, why all works fine with 12.04 and not with 18.04?13:04
miguetomreyn: if i could determine the change and reverse it...13:05
Meilimique: regressions happen13:05
tomreyncan't comment about 12.04, it is not supported here13:06
migueMeili: regressions?13:06
miguetomreyn: ok...13:06
=== niee is now known as Ryzen10
Meilimique: software keeps getting updates, improvements, fixes. But every now and then something that worked in the past breaks by that. Thats a regression.13:07
ice9is there a certificate for Ubuntu compared to RHCE?13:08
migueMeili: ok... thanks :)13:08
tomreynice9: https://certification.ubuntu.com/13:08
Meilimique: you could try a 16.04 live to see if that works13:09
ice9tomreyn, thats for hardware!13:09
tomreynice9: oh sorry you asked about training13:09
tomreynice9: not that i know of. we only do support on this channel really.13:09
Meilimique: have you tried this kernel parameter: "nohpet"?13:14
migueMeili: yes... i will try with 16.04... and yes, i tried with nohpet but no results :(13:26
Meilimique: instead of nohpet, try: "hpet=disable highres=off nohz=off"13:26
migueMeili: i tried with 18.04 because i think it has best ssd support...13:26
migueMeili: yes... i tried that too13:27
tomreynlack of or improper ssd support is a problem this nine year old netbook / low spec laptop does *not* have.13:30
miguei just edit " /etc/systemd/logind.conf"  to change "HandleLidSwitch" to ignore... and do "systemctl restart systemd-logind.service"...13:30
Meilimique: just to be sure: you know you need to reboot after changing kernel parameters?13:30
Meilimique: im affraid thats the only real workaround13:31
migueand again it takes 5 minutes in wake up... without close lid yet :(13:31
Meilimique: ah, I really hoped for you the lid was part of the equation.13:31
Meilimique: but it seems there was never a suitable workaround implemented for timing issue you are experiencing13:32
miguetomreyn: but the same hw configuration work fine with 12.04 live usb...13:32
migueMeili: Yes, the tests that I told you (hpet=disable... and others)  I did yesterday13:34
migueMeili: :)13:34
tomreynmigue: you could file a bug about the regression. but i would assume this may not get high priority due to the hardware platform you're reporting about.13:36
tomreyn(i can be wrong, give it a try.)13:36
Meilitomreyn: the original bug reports have never resulted in a fix, disabling hpet was the workaround13:36
miguetomreyn: yes...13:36
tomreynMeili: and yet migue tells us they tried disabling hpet and it did not help on (i assume) current ubuntu releases.13:37
tomreynso *maybe* there's still a regression. but then... this hasn't been worked out enough.13:38
tomreynthe first things to have would be dmesg of a good and bad boot, with as few kernel options set as strictly needed.13:39
Meilitomreyn: the weird state it gets in when it should resume is not visible in dmesg13:40
tomreynok, i should not spend time on this anyways. good luck.13:41
Meiligood point =P13:41
miguetomreyn: ok... thanks! :)13:41
Meilimigue: try a mainline kernel and if that doesnt work I'm affraid you will have to do without a suspend to ram.13:42
migueMeili: i just boot with parameters "hpet=....", and it works13:43
migueMeili: i suspend by "echo mem ..."... and close lid... an open lid and it wake up (!!!) :D13:43
migueMeili: suspend and waking up is very important for my work style :(13:44
migueMeili: but it seems work now...13:44
migueMeili: thankyou! :)13:44
Meilimique: you'll have to try a few times to be sure, it is a "timing issue" that might not occur every time.13:49
Meilimique: if it is fixed after all, I'm happy to hear that!13:50

lordcirth__WhiskerBiscuit, so, they want to be able to do arbitrary commands as root, without being root?18:06
WhiskerBiscuityup18:06
OerHekspasswordless sudo, https://www.build-business-websites.co.uk/ubuntu-sudo-without-password-prompt/comment-page-1/18:06
lordcirth__Do you have a finite list of commands they might need root for?18:06
OerHekstons of other pages that gives the same18:06
WhiskerBiscuitno.. the whole enchilada18:06
OerHeksbad side, you edit stuff in your /home with sudo, it might wreck ... wait, why do i warn18:07
WhiskerBiscuit@OerHeks, that works, but still requires sudo18:09
Red99lol , found it just had to logout the installer was still running ...18:09
BaconBaconPancakso when apt reaches out to connect to a repo in sources.list is it using a specialized user agent?18:09
WhiskerBiscuitIF you want the backstory on this, the boss asked for it and I told him I don't know how.  Also told him it is considered a bad idea and I could look for a solution but I'll get flamed for it18:09
WhiskerBiscuitNow he's got his gander up and wants it to make a point.18:10
WhiskerBiscuitSo for my sake... there's got a be a way18:10
OerHeksWhiskerBiscuit, further than passwordless sudo, is beyond the scope of this channel18:10
lordcirth__WhiskerBiscuit, what he's asking for is to be root without root. It's not just a bad idea, it's incoherent.18:10
WhiskerBiscuitRight?18:10
WhiskerBiscuitBut if I say that, he'll shoot my johnson off18:11
leftyfbWhiskerBiscuit: it's not a thing.18:11
lordcirth__WhiskerBiscuit, what if you say that *other* people said it? :P18:11
WhiskerBiscuiteasy for you to say.  i have to deal with this18:11
leftyfbWhiskerBiscuit: That goes against the whole purpose of POSIX security18:11
WhiskerBiscuiti know i know i know18:11
leftyfbWhiskerBiscuit: the answer is no18:12
OerHekschildish, just lost interested18:12
lordcirth__WhiskerBiscuit, you could try r/sysadmin for help dealing with the PHB18:12
leftyfbWhiskerBiscuit: yeah, your issue is with PHB, not how to be root without logging in as root. Sounds like an HR/find new job/not #ubuntu issue.18:13
WhiskerBiscuitleftyfb, no one else will deal with him, so i get paid well18:14
leftyfbWhiskerBiscuit: sorry to hear that. Let us know if you have any Ubuntu issues and we'll be glad to help18:14
WhiskerBiscuitok, im just going to modify his login on putty so it logs in as root then changes to his named home directory18:20
WhiskerBiscuithopefully he doesn't notice.  thanks for the help!18:20
rfmWhiskerBiscuit, if you are going that way, you could just change the uid in his passwd entry to zero....18:26
OerHeksyeah, and please come back to reset the stuff, when it wrecked his system; we are happy to do that ofcourse18:28

BaconBaconPancakso when apt reaches out to connect to a repo in sources.list is it using a specialized user agent?18:35
OerHeksBaconBaconPancak, no, the repo naming is enough to select the version18:40
OerHeksshow us a pastebin of the apt command?18:40
tomreynBaconBaconPancak: but yes, it does send a user agent string, if this was your question18:41
BaconBaconPancaktomreyn ok cool, happen to have a specific one handy of what it sends? or is there a way to possibly change it (without changing the source)18:42
tomreynUser-Agent: Debian APT-HTTP/1.3 (1.6.8)18:44
BaconBaconPancakthanks a bunch18:44
BaconBaconPancakhow did you get that information? id like to try it for myself18:44

tomreyna web search for "apt user agent" would probably ahve worked, too ;)18:47

eugenio_hi all, I'm having problem connecting lubuntu with HDMI to the tV, could you give me some hints?18:51
lotuspsychjeeugenio_: best is when you describe your issue to the channel, volunteers can think along with you18:52
nicomachuseugenio_: what's the problem you're seeing?18:52
nicomachusYou may need to switch your display settings to extend the display or mirror it.18:52
BrianBlaze420and what model of computer so we know what you are dealing with eugenio_ :)18:53
BaconBaconPancakthanks  again tomreyn18:53
BrianBlaze420thanks for the input teward I appreciate it18:53
BrianBlaze420it's just weird lol18:53
eugenio_nicomachus: on the tv screen I see 'no signal' the computer is a Sony Vaio laptop with lubuntu 18.10 ( I installed lubuntu because it is an old laptop)18:56
B0g4r7Some TVs are not compatible with some resolutions.18:58
eugenio_BrianBlaze420: the computer is a Sony Vaio laptop PCG-4R1M18:58
hristohi18:59
OerHekseugenio_, does that sony have a fn + screen/ext.screen key?19:00
tomreyneugenio_: did you try a different hdmi wire, yes? does "xrandr" list it?19:01
tomreyns/yes/yet/19:01
eugenio_BrianBlaze420: B0g4r7: nicomachus: a strange thing is that I use HDMI 1 on the TV while in the monitor setup I see HDMI 219:01
=== LabMonkey is now known as Mechanismus
OerHekslogically; screen 2: hdmi19:02
eugenio_tomreyn: I tried the fn + screen without result19:03
tomreyneugenio_: this was OerHeks' question, mine you didn't respond to, yet19:04
eugenio_tomreyn: I checked that the cable works fine19:04
tomreynthanks for answering 1 of 2 of my questions.19:05
eugenio_tomreyn: xrandr lists both HDMI 1 (disconnected) and HDMI 2 connected, but actually I pliugged in the cable in the first HDMI TV slot19:05
tomreyneugenio_: i see. and the hdmi 2 port of your computer is not connected to anything?19:06
eugenio_tomreyn: OerHeks sorry but I don't completely understood19:06
OerHeksmaybe it is a machine that requires HDMI to be connected @ boot19:06
eugenio_tomreyn: I have only one HDMI port on my pc19:06
eugenio_tomreyn: another strange thing is that up to two weeks ago I was able to connect the laptop with the TV via HDMI, then I did an update I think, and then the problem started19:07
eugenio_OerHeks: do you mean to try to plug before the boot?19:08
OerHeksconnect the ext screen and turn it on, before boot19:09
eugenio_OerHeks: ok, I'm going to try I log out the chat and come back after the test19:10
eugeniooakridge:19:15
tomreynyou mean OerHeks19:16
eugenioOerHeks: I tried but without any results, same problems19:16
tomreyneugenio: try this:   sudo apt-get -qqy update; sudo apt-get -qqy install read-edid; echo; echo ========== POST THIS URL ============;  sudo get-edid 2>/dev/null | parse-edid 2>&1 | nc termbin.com 9999; echo; sudo apt-get purge -qqy read-edid19:16
tomreynsomewhere on this output, a URL should be printed, please post it here.19:17
tomreynwhat this does is: try to identify connected monitors, report the findings to termbin.com, a website where you can post text snippets.19:18
fleabeardis there a way to not have ubuntu forget my wifi network when I resume my laptop from sleep? I recover it from sleep and it won't reconnect to my wireless network and instead tells me there are connections available and I'm having to select my wifi network each time.19:20
eugeniotomreyn: sudo get-edid 2>/dev/null | parse-edid 2>&1 | nc termbin.com 9999; echo; sudo apt-get purge -qqy read-edid19:20
eugeniosorry19:20
eugeniohttps://termbin.com/nqlt19:20
tomreyneugenio: so is this a samsung tv you have there?19:21
eugeniotomreyn: yes19:22
tomreyneugenio: then you may just have set the tv to the wrong input channel19:22
tomreynsince it's generally detected fine19:23
tomreynfleabeard: this could be a result of the network connection not getting suspended properly, or woken up properly. your kernel logs would probably have some details.19:25
fleabeardtomreyn, are kernel logs systemd and/or journald?19:27
tomreynfleabeard: they do end up in the journal (journalctl --help), and previously in the kernel rung buffer (dmesg --help).19:28
fleabeardtomreyn, do I do dmesg -k to read kernel logs? (trying to make sense of the syntax usage in dmesg -help)19:30
tomreynfleabeard: does the system actually (ostensibly) forget about the wireless network, including the password (does nm-connection-editor no longer lists this profile?), or does it just not automatically reconnect you so you have to find the network on the list and click it to connect again (but don't need to re-enter its password)19:30
=== z_ is now known as Guest64537
fleabeardtomreyn, it just forgets the network. Once I select mine from the list it auto-connects without the need of a password.19:31
tomreynyou can just use "dmesg"19:31
tomreynmaybe better "dmesg -T" to get the timestamps matching your wall clock19:32
fleabeardtomreyn, I grepped it to wlo1 > http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/qZbzXB5DV4/ not sure if that is helpful?19:33
Guest64537Can I install more Ubuntu Software since their are very limited Software on Ubuntu Software Center?19:34
tomreynfleabeard: better note doen the vurrent time, make it occurs again and then run dmesg -T again, looking at the timestamps matching what you noted down.19:34
fleabeardtomreyn, will do, thank you!19:34

ubottuGuest64537: A Graphical Package Manager. For a good howto see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto19:36
tomreynGuest64537: this was meant to say:  Synaptic is a graphical utility which can install and remove software packages (.deb).19:40
fleabeardnot sure if I'm remembering this correctly, but when installing a .deb from terminal, I'd use dpkg -i /pathtodebfile/debfile.deb. Is it always required to put the path of the .deb even when you're pwd is in the folder it exists in already? Shouldn't you be able to simply 'dpkg -i debfile.deb' at that point?19:43
Guest64537ubottu, tomreyn : Thank you so much for help, and ubottu, articles you shared are really good and helpful, appreciate it19:44
ubottuGuest64537: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :)19:44
Guest64537But which one of the ways would be much more reliable , installing app through synaptic, command line or a PPA?19:46
Guest64537considering I have just started learning ubuntu19:47
tomreynfleabeard: (1) don't directly install .deb packages unless you know that's a really good idea. you should always prefer apt repositories, so they'll have n upgrade path; (2) if you have to install .deb packages, prefer doing so using "apt install path/to/file" rather than depk, since apt will also help you resolve dependencies; (3) you have to provide the path, but it can be a relative path. a relative path to a package in the working directory19:47
tomreynis ./19:47
fleabeardtomreyn, thanks, the .deb I installed came from NordVPN. It works a treat on my system. Just thought it odd that I could be in the directory where the deb file existed but still had to include its path in install command.19:48
tomreynGuest64537: those aren't alternatives: installing a package using synaptic or the "apt" or "apt-get" command line utilities is a way to install packages, whereas a PPA is a source to install packages from (suing these tools)19:48
tomreyn!ppa | Guest6453719:49
ubottuGuest64537: A Personal Package Archive (PPA) can provide alternate software not normally available in the offical Ubuntu repositories - Looking for a PPA? See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas - WARNING: PPAs are unsupported third-party packages, and you use them at your own risk. See also !addppa and !ppa-purge19:49
tomreynfleabeard: so "sudo apt install ./nordvpn-client.deb" or similar should have worked.19:50
rk3yhi there, one question my VPS is running ubuntu. I have wireguard vpn thre (interface=wg0).ufw tells me that forwarding on wg0 is blocked. Is it dangerous to enable in the ufw ufw default allow FORWARD?19:50
fleabeardtomreyn, ah! I see now, ./debfile.deb whereas I was all like /path/to/debfile.deb lol. Thanks for clearing that up.19:52
bpromptfleabeard:    yeap, in essence ./ is part of the path :)19:52
tomreynrk3y: in case you are consider ing to set DEFAULT_FORWARD_POLICY="ACCEPT" in /etc/default/ufw - that's not what you want to do.19:53
tomreynfleabeard: so you provided the absolute path whereas a (shorter) relative path could also have been provided.19:54
wintersnowhi19:54
bpordshi19:54
fleabeardyep! I was understanding it all wrong.19:54
tomreynfleabeard: unless this package (or you, previously) also set up an apt repository for this client to get updates form, you will now need to ensure that you regularly check for available (security?) updates for this software, since those will not happen otherwise.19:55
browndogComplete noob. Trying to use the "make" command to install wifi drivers for a Realtek NIC, and keep getting error messages. Are there packages I need to have installed for the make command to work?19:55
fleabeardtomreyn, yeah it had an apt repo already :)19:55
bpordsbrowndog: what error messages are you getting19:55
tomreynfleabeard: good, then hopefully this is maintained well.19:55
browndogThanks for replying bpords. Let me check19:55
fleabeardtomreyn, I got myself confused following their install instructions since the text used the full path install method, while their screenshots showed the relative path install method.19:56
wintersnow@browndog do you have a dog19:56

rk3ytomreyn: i am expecting that the wg0 interface on my ubuntu server receives ip6pings but it does not see it (in tcpdump)19:59

tomreyneugenio: which ubuntu version is this again? - sorry if you said so before.19:59
browndogI see. Thank you for letting me know! Any idea how to solve the Realtek wireless driver issue?19:59

tomreyneugenio: okay, can you post the full system log online and provide us with the link? journalctl -b | nc termbin.com 999920:02
eugenioioria: yes bu teven arandr gives HDMI2 instead 120:02
bpordsbrowndog: if you can't find a newer version of rtlwifi that works, that might mean rtlwifi hasn't been updated and you'll either need to find another driver, downrgade your linux kernel/ubuntu version, or just use another wifi adapter20:02
bpordsbrowndog: you can buy like $1 usb wifi adapter compatible with gnu/linux from sources such as ebay, and then you will be able to use wireless network20:02
browndogI got it from a user on Github.20:02
eugeniotomreyn: https://termbin.com/nqqa20:03
lotuspsychjebpords: we try to help users make their hardware work here20:03
browndogbpords: I think you're right...I might have to just buy an external usb wifi adapter, or find an internal adapter that the new kernel supports.20:03
tomreyneugenio: i suspect the hdmi1/2 thing on the computer is just because these ports are incorrectly lebelled somehow. you only have one monitor connected via HDMI, and this cone montor is the Samsung, this is what we all agree on, i think.20:03
eugeniotomreyn: yes20:04
lotuspsychjebrowndog: can you fill in ioria's question?20:04

compdocdman777, if you ever run across a bios setting named 'pci latency timer' and its set to 64, set it to 3220:44

Lost_Goative tried changing it from cifs to ntfs but not luck any ideas ?21:22
eugeniotomreyn: so at the end what is your suggestion?21:22
tgm4883Lost_Goat: remote shares would be CIFS not NTFS21:22
tgm4883Lost_Goat: I'd verify that you have the cifs tools installed21:23
Lost_Goattgm4883, thats what i had but it says bad superblock21:23
tomreyneugenio: use the fstrim command weekly, as the "fstrim" systemd timer / service does on 18.04 LTS (i suspect this does not yet exist on 16.04 LTS, maybe there is a cron job there instead)21:23
tgm4883Lost_Goat: can you mount it from the command line?21:23
tomreyneugenio: oh wait i mixed you up with dman777 there21:24

tomreyneugenio: from what i gathered from your logs, the monitor is detected fine. i can't say why it's not working. i assume you already made sure it is enabled in display settings, so i don't know what else to try.21:25
tgm4883Lost_Goat: ok, what does your fstab entry look like?21:25

Lost_Goat on the desktop no21:29
tomreyneugenio: i noticed from your log, it's roughly as old as the tv. i don't think there is any more light ubuntu flavour than lubuntu. you could try running without a graphical desktop, just run those graphical applications which have to be graphical on X.21:30
tomreyneugenio: but that's a configuration i'm not experienced with, so can't really help there.21:30
eugeniotomreyn: not a good perspective...21:31
Lost_Goattgm4883, No dialect specified on mount. Default has changed to a more secure dialect, SMB2.1 or later (e.g. SMB3), from CIFS (SMB1). To use the less secure SMB1 dialect to access old servers which do not support SMB3 (or SMB2.1) specify vers=1.0 on mount.21:32

tgm4883Lost_Goat: I'd try it21:34
eugeniotomreyn: you are right21:34
tgm4883Lost_Goat: just to see if it works. That includes dropping the iocharset and sec options21:34
Lost_Goattgm4883, ok i will give it a try21:34
Lost_Goattgm4883, that worked21:37
tgm4883Lost_Goat: good deal, so then the issue is either your credentials file or one of those two other options21:38

dman777tomreyn: thanks... mine is a 860. What does the astrick symbolize here? https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/drivers/ata/libata-core.c#L457421:54
tomreyndman777: so you actually have an nvme, not ssd. what do you mean by "astrick"?21:56
dman777{ "Samsung SSD 850*",NULL,ATA_HORKAGE_NO_NCQ_TRIM21:57
dman777no, mine is a SATA21:57
tomreynoh right 860 is sata, 960 is nvme21:58
dman777Does the asterick here mean 'and greater than 850'?  But I think this code just disabled trim so I am not sure if discard is the cause of my errors or not21:59
lin_noobIs the latest release of Ubuntu live black screening for many people as well?21:59
tomreyndman777: my understanding is that it means that any string starting with "Samsung SSD 850" will match.22:00

compdocwant their phone number?22:03
lin_noobNo. For god sakes ask them to put an iso burning utility back into the distro.22:04
OerHeksenable universe, and install brasero?22:07
lin_noobI am talking about the live iso. The one that ships with things no one cares about like Shotwell, yet removes important recovery CD utilities like brasero or at least xorriso.22:08
tomreynjust install it, should work there, too, if you have some ram22:08
tomreynhttps://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-burn-a-dvd-on-ubuntu#022:08
OerHeksburning an iso on dvd while running a live iso on dvd..22:09
lin_noobYes, with a usb burner.22:09
tomreynhuh, mine gets hot sometimes, but usually doesn't burn!22:09
lin_noobSince Ubuntu ships with genisoimage, it makes sense an iso burner should also be included.22:09
dman777tomreyn: tune2fs -l /dev/sda1 doesn't show trim or discard. Does this mean it was black listed and my errors are from something else?22:10
OerHekslin_noob, file a bug against brasero? not sure why nobody else complaints about this22:10
lin_noobWell I can understand that writing iso files from the live cd is not a popular use case. But still, if genisoimage is included, I don't see the point of not including at least a CLI burner.22:11
tomreyndman777: no, it doesn't mean this,. it just means that the "discard" file system option is not in use.22:12
tomreyndman777: to test whether fstrim works, run "fstrim -v" against a mounted file system twice, and see if you get different, non 0 results.22:12
Lost_Goattgm4883, turns out i needed to install cifs-utils for it to work22:15
tingaIs there a way to copy a selection of paths so that the relative source path is fully preserved in the target (and missing folders created)?22:27
tingae.g. "cp -a */*.mp4 /mnt/foo/bar/"22:28
tingaI want that to copy e.g.  baz/bum.mp4 to /mnt/foo/bar/baz/bum.mp4, likewise for all other source paths given to cp.22:28
tingaAnd it should create /mnt/foo/bar/baz/ if not exists.22:29
lordcirth__tinga, you probably want rsync22:29
lordcirth__!rsync22:29
ubottursync is a fast remote file copy and synchronization program - For more see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/rsync22:29
tingaAh, good idea.22:29
lordcirth__It has tons of options22:29
tingaStill sounds like cp should be able to do it already :)22:30
tingaAnyway, fine suggestions. Thanks.22:30
tingaHmm, how to use rsync with multiple source arguments, though?22:33
OneM_IndustriesLast night, my power went out. Since restarting it, Pulseaudio is now broken.22:34
jcduttontinga, rsync is more a recursive directory traversal than choosing multiple source directories22:34
OneM_Industriesrestarting my computer*22:34
tingaYeah, that's how I was using it in the past.22:34
OneM_IndustriesAttempting to start it manually results in: E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.22:34
OneM_IndustriesI've been going through the google results for that, however nothing seems to match, yet.22:34
OneM_IndustriesAny ideas?22:34
tingaProblem is that I would really like to use a shell glob pattern to specify the files.22:34
kk4ewtOneM_Industries,  so reinstall pulseaudio packages22:35
jcduttontinga, what you can do is select the whole tree to rsync, and then use the "exclude" pattern to discount what you don't want copied22:35
OneM_IndustriesAlso, about every 5 seconds, the speakers are clicking.22:35
OneM_Industrieskk4ewt: Alright.22:35
tingajcdutton, yes, but the nice thing about */*/*foo* or so is that it allows to specify the depth I want to match.22:36
tingaAlso, that I can easily check first what files those are by using ls with the same glob pattern.22:36
jcduttontinga, so something like:  https://stackoverflow.com/questions/43531518/copy-folder-structure-with-rsync-glob22:36
tingajcdutton, interesting22:37
jcduttontinga, why do you only want to copy some of the files?22:38
nightowl1If I run a game using RX550 mobile while on battery , the game starts underclocked , to start it properly I need to connect the charger , enter the game and then disconnect the charger Is there any where I could control the gpu?22:38
tingajcdutton, I want to actually move those files out of a tree. First copying then rm'ing is safer that's why I opt for that.22:39
OerHeksnightowl1, you might want to checkout energy settings, or install TLP for those power override22:40
tingaIt contains files saved from firefox, whereas I also have directories with other stuff in them where I don't want to move the .mp4 files.22:40
tingaJust saying */*.mp4 is very simple and catches the right files.22:40
nightowl1OerHeks, Power Management doesn't have any option for GPU22:41
nightowl1I will check TLP22:41
tingaI remember having had similar cases in the past where specifying */*/*.something was appropriate, too.22:41
jcduttontinga, you could combine find with cp22:42
tinga(OTOH/BTW I still wish there was a syntax in shell globbing to specify any number of directories, too. */tmp/**/*.mp4 or so)22:42
OneM_Industrieskk4ewt: No luck.22:42
tingajcdutton, yes, I'm going to write a simple script that does that.22:42
OneM_IndustriesStill not working, and pulseaudio is still refusing to start.22:43
tingawell, not find actually, just, takes multiple source arguments, loops over them, mkdir -p's the dirname of the path on the target, copies.22:43
nightowl1OerHeks, I do tlp stat , I see amdgpu set as auto22:43
jcduttontinga one of the cp options creates directories. mkdir not needed22:43
tingaAh, nice.22:43
OneM_IndustriesAny ideas?22:44

OerHeksWoot_, just the /home/  folder would do, i think23:06
Woot_run a find/sort/tail on ls w/ m/c/atime?23:06
pragmaticenigmaWoot_: typically system configurations are kept in the /etc directory tree. User applications will store their configuration in ~/.config directory and others.23:07
Woot_i just ran into a service that had config files in multiple /home and under /opt23:07
Woot_yes, typically people keep notes and documents about production systems ...not these folks.23:07
pragmaticenigmaWoot_: If the application was installed via a 3rd party installer (meaning wasn't installed via apt or apt-get) it may store its configuration anywhere the developer decided to23:07
pragmaticenigmaWoot_: unfortunately, there is no standard location defined. Just industry best practices23:08
Woot_what about a find/sort/tail on ls w/ m/c/atime   and if possible exclude binaries?23:08

tingajcdutton, couldn't find this option to create directories; but instead that search led me to find the "--parents" option, which does exactly what I was looking for, duh :)23:14
