|easy|thx for all i quit maybe cya later00:45
greenbarca2001hi all, I'm having trouble setting up the DNS settings for a subdomain02:09
greenbarca2001for some reason it isn't working and I've spent hours trying to fix it02:09
tomreyngreenbarca2001: how does this relate to ubuntu then?02:13
greenbarca2001oh I need to do it with bind902:14
greenbarca2001is there a more suitable irc chat for this? I tried finding one but I couldn't02:14
tomreyngreenbarca2001: i guess here is fine if you have bind related questions. i'm not very much into it, though, maybe soemone else is.02:17
tomreyni guess you'll want two zone files, one for the main domain name (second level domain) and another for the subdomain (third level domain), and have a NS record for the subdomain in the main domain's zone file.02:18
tomreynthis way you can have the subdomain delegated to a different authoritative nameserver, which is, from what i understan, your goal.02:19
tomreynthere may also be a bind(9= channel, i haven't checked.02:19
tomreyn!alis02:19
ubottuAlis is an IRC service to help you find channels. For help on using it, see "/msg Alis help list" or ask in #freenode. Example usage: "/msg Alis list http"02:19
tomreynthere is also ##networking, but they may be bored by such questions ;-)02:20
greenbarca2001thank you! i don't want different name servers, I want both the domain and subdomain to have the same nameservers02:21
greenbarca2001I just want them to be different domains, this is possible right?02:21
tomreyntwo domains are not the same by definition. i guess i don't understand.02:23
tomreynA is not B. Also B.A is not A.02:24
greenbarca2001I want a domain example.org, and a subdomain conference.example.org, but I want them to use the same nameservers02:24
greenbarca2001namely, ns1.example.org and ns2.example.org02:24
greenbarca2001this should be possible, right?02:24
tomreynsure. and this nameserver is run by you?02:25
tomreyn*these nameservers are02:25
greenbarca2001yep, I configured them in namecheap02:26
greenbarca2001if that's what you're asking02:26
tomreynmaybe, depends on how you configured them. i'm asking whether ns1.example.org and ns2.example.org point to servers you manage.02:27
tomreyni assume one of them is the one you are trying to configure bind on02:28
greenbarca2001oh yes they do02:28
greenbarca2001they both point to my server IP address02:28
greenbarca2001I only have one server02:28
greenbarca20012 nameservers02:28
tomreynwell that's not how do you dns. with just one server you can point the second to some free backup dns.02:29
tomreynsearch the web for "free secondary dns" OR "free backup dns"02:30
tomreynmaybe namecheap also provides one.02:30
greenbarca2001I mean the main domain works02:33
greenbarca2001I don't quite understand what you mean, the ns2 name server is the backup02:34
greenbarca2001I looked up what you said it seems as though I'm already using Namecheap’s Secondary DNS?02:34
tomreynhow would i know?02:35

hellerzHello guys, I have installed XRDP on my ubuntu 16.04 LTS. 18 days and today I'm trying to connect to my server through remote desktop but It won't let me11:52
hellerzIs there a way to fix this without reboot?11:52
sine`I have just installed ubuntu server and install the unity desktop. how can I access a desktop remotely12:45
xibalbaI could use some assistance with some basic IPTables (not my forte). I have setup a SSH VPN from my network to a remote cloud system. I want to use my local system as a gateway and forward all traffic incoming on ens160 to tun0. I can ping from tun0 on my local system to tun0 on the remote system, so no issue there. When I put in my IPTables commands to Forward incoming traffic from ens160 to tun0, I never see it make it into the12:51
xibalba tun0 interface on the local system (checked with tshark/tcpdump)12:51
xibalbai used the following commands, /sbin/iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o tun0 -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT12:51
xibalbaopps i meant ens160 not eth012:52

qman__ok, a couple things - did you turn on IP forwarding, and did you set up the routes?13:17

compdocthats odd looking. text based browser?14:38
blackflowjimmy06: Hetzner?14:39
compdocyou setup netplan?14:39
jimmy06hetzner yes14:39
blackflowjimmy06: wrong gateway14:39
jimmy06this setup worked on 16.x just now14:39
jimmy06gateway is correct14:39
jimmy06its a hetzner thing14:39
blackflowI know, but did it end up in .1 or .2 ?14:40
blackflowiirc was .114:40
jimmy06I dont understand the question sorry14:40
jimmy06.1 or .2 ?14:40
blackflowand you really don't need to obfuscate it, it's a RFC 1918 subnet, private and non-routable14:40
jimmy06you sure about that?14:41
jimmy06its my main servers ip addres14:41
jimmy06the gateway14:41
jimmy06then other server is a vm14:41
jimmy06the screen shots are from a proxmox vm14:42
blackflowjimmy06: yes, the gateway. isn't it 176.16.1.1  ?14:42
blackflowah... 172.16....14:42
jimmy06the gateway ip is the server ip14:42
jimmy06176.x.x.xx214:43
jimmy06176.9.3.xx214:43
blackflowjimmy06: nevermind, I misread that gateway as Hetzner's CX gateways that are in the RF1918 range14:43
jimmy06fair enough :)14:43
jimmy06normally i have to install 16.x without an adaptor config14:43
blackflow172.16..... 176....   all them numbers buzzing around14:43
jimmy06then config it after but I cant skip it at all here14:44
jimmy06compdoc: what do you mean by thats an odd looking text based browser?14:49
compdocI asked if it was. never saw that before14:50
jimmy06no its the installer for 18.04 server14:50
compdocah. I havent used that yet14:51
jimmy06I cant even press the F keys to move to another console :( lol14:54
jimmy06Oh wait I might be able to switch the network device and get it installed with a private NAT interface then change it afterwards14:54
RoyKjimmy06: ctrl+alt+f114:56
RoyKthe new installer really sucks14:56
RoyKbetter use the old one14:57
jimmy06I cant use F keys RoyK as its a VM console in a browser14:58
jimmy06my other approach worked14:58
jimmy06its installing now14:58
jimmy06in fact its done :D14:58
jimmy06ah balls it seems it still wont accept the default gateway15:31
jimmy06got it used on-link15:39
mwhudsontomreyn: oh man, i just need to make subiquity/curtin understand "use all the remaining space for this partition"18:02
tomreynmwhudson: yes, looks like it doesn't understand this., although it shows correct (or correctly seeming) sizes on the GUI18:05
mwhudsonyeah, the calculations are almost right18:05
mwhudsonjust not down to the last k or whatever18:05
tomreynit could always ask the tools what's actually available18:06
mwhudsonno, because at the time you are editing things in the ui no actual changes are being made to the disks18:07
* mwhudson --> food18:07
tomreynhmm you're right, of course, it doesn't create the PV at this point, just partitions are written.18:08
