[00:45] <|easy|> thx for all i quit maybe cya later [02:09] hi all, I'm having trouble setting up the DNS settings for a subdomain [02:09] for some reason it isn't working and I've spent hours trying to fix it [02:13] greenbarca2001: how does this relate to ubuntu then? [02:14] oh I need to do it with bind9 [02:14] is there a more suitable irc chat for this? I tried finding one but I couldn't [02:17] greenbarca2001: i guess here is fine if you have bind related questions. i'm not very much into it, though, maybe soemone else is. [02:18] i guess you'll want two zone files, one for the main domain name (second level domain) and another for the subdomain (third level domain), and have a NS record for the subdomain in the main domain's zone file. [02:19] this way you can have the subdomain delegated to a different authoritative nameserver, which is, from what i understan, your goal. [02:19] there may also be a bind(9= channel, i haven't checked. [02:19] !alis [02:19] Alis is an IRC service to help you find channels. For help on using it, see "/msg Alis help list" or ask in #freenode. Example usage: "/msg Alis list http" [02:20] there is also ##networking, but they may be bored by such questions ;-) [02:21] thank you! i don't want different name servers, I want both the domain and subdomain to have the same nameservers [02:21] I just want them to be different domains, this is possible right? [02:23] two domains are not the same by definition. i guess i don't understand. [02:24] A is not B. Also B.A is not A. [02:24] I want a domain example.org, and a subdomain conference.example.org, but I want them to use the same nameservers [02:24] namely, ns1.example.org and ns2.example.org [02:24] this should be possible, right? [02:25] sure. and this nameserver is run by you? [02:25] *these nameservers are [02:26] yep, I configured them in namecheap [02:26] if that's what you're asking [02:27] maybe, depends on how you configured them. i'm asking whether ns1.example.org and ns2.example.org point to servers you manage. [02:28] i assume one of them is the one you are trying to configure bind on [02:28] oh yes they do [02:28] they both point to my server IP address [02:28] I only have one server [02:28] 2 nameservers [02:29] well that's not how do you dns. with just one server you can point the second to some free backup dns. [02:30] search the web for "free secondary dns" OR "free backup dns" [02:30] maybe namecheap also provides one. [02:33] I mean the main domain works [02:34] I don't quite understand what you mean, the ns2 name server is the backup [02:34] I looked up what you said it seems as though I'm already using Namecheap’s Secondary DNS? [02:35] how would i know? === bhuddah_ is now known as bhuddah === svetlana is now known as Sveta [11:52] Hello guys, I have installed XRDP on my ubuntu 16.04 LTS. 18 days and today I'm trying to connect to my server through remote desktop but It won't let me [11:52] Is there a way to fix this without reboot? [12:45] I have just installed ubuntu server and install the unity desktop. how can I access a desktop remotely [12:51] I could use some assistance with some basic IPTables (not my forte). I have setup a SSH VPN from my network to a remote cloud system. I want to use my local system as a gateway and forward all traffic incoming on ens160 to tun0. I can ping from tun0 on my local system to tun0 on the remote system, so no issue there. When I put in my IPTables commands to Forward incoming traffic from ens160 to tun0, I never see it make it into the [12:51] tun0 interface on the local system (checked with tshark/tcpdump) [12:51] i used the following commands, /sbin/iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o tun0 -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT [12:52] opps i meant ens160 not eth0 [13:05] https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/FX7wXgSHNv/ [13:17] ok, a couple things - did you turn on IP forwarding, and did you set up the routes? [14:36] Im trying to install Server 18.04 but the network config times out anyone got any ideas about this? [14:37] https://i.imgur.com/jBJVPgb.png [14:38] https://i.imgur.com/VkMwffJ.png [14:38] thats odd looking. text based browser? [14:39] jimmy06: Hetzner? [14:39] you setup netplan? [14:39] hetzner yes [14:39] jimmy06: wrong gateway [14:39] this setup worked on 16.x just now [14:39] gateway is correct [14:39] its a hetzner thing [14:40] I know, but did it end up in .1 or .2 ? [14:40] iirc was .1 [14:40] I dont understand the question sorry [14:40] .1 or .2 ? [14:40] and you really don't need to obfuscate it, it's a RFC 1918 subnet, private and non-routable [14:41] you sure about that? [14:41] its my main servers ip addres [14:41] the gateway [14:41] then other server is a vm [14:42] the screen shots are from a proxmox vm [14:42] jimmy06: yes, the gateway. isn't it 176.16.1.1 ? [14:42] ah... 172.16.... [14:42] the gateway ip is the server ip [14:43] 176.x.x.xx2 [14:43] 176.9.3.xx2 [14:43] jimmy06: nevermind, I misread that gateway as Hetzner's CX gateways that are in the RF1918 range [14:43] fair enough :) [14:43] normally i have to install 16.x without an adaptor config [14:43] 172.16..... 176.... all them numbers buzzing around [14:44] then config it after but I cant skip it at all here [14:49] compdoc: what do you mean by thats an odd looking text based browser? [14:50] I asked if it was. never saw that before [14:50] no its the installer for 18.04 server [14:51] ah. I havent used that yet [14:54] I cant even press the F keys to move to another console :( lol [14:54] Oh wait I might be able to switch the network device and get it installed with a private NAT interface then change it afterwards [14:56] jimmy06: ctrl+alt+f1 [14:56] the new installer really sucks [14:57] better use the old one [14:58] I cant use F keys RoyK as its a VM console in a browser [14:58] my other approach worked [14:58] its installing now [14:58] in fact its done :D [15:31] ah balls it seems it still wont accept the default gateway [15:39] got it used on-link [18:02] tomreyn: oh man, i just need to make subiquity/curtin understand "use all the remaining space for this partition" [18:05] mwhudson: yes, looks like it doesn't understand this., although it shows correct (or correctly seeming) sizes on the GUI [18:05] yeah, the calculations are almost right [18:05] just not down to the last k or whatever [18:06] it could always ask the tools what's actually available [18:07] no, because at the time you are editing things in the ui no actual changes are being made to the disks [18:07] * mwhudson --> food [18:08] hmm you're right, of course, it doesn't create the PV at this point, just partitions are written.
