xubuntu79iHi, there.06:04
xubuntu79iIs anybody here?06:05
Unit193Howdy.06:05
xubuntu79iI'm installing Xubuntu on a MacBook Air 11" 2010 : )06:05
xubuntu79iBut having some troubles with GRUB installation.06:06
xubuntu79iWould you please help me?06:07
Unit193Last I knew there were differences between installing on Mac and a normal computer, if that's true then I have no idea about Macs.06:10
xubuntu79i"Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda" is what it says.06:10
xubuntu79iYup. I've to install rEFIt first in order to boot the USB.06:11
xubuntu79iWell, I'll try something else. See you.06:13
Unit193You may wish to seek help in #ubuntu06:14
GobelijnIs there anyone that by any chance succeeded in permanently changing his DNS?06:24
AndrioI may have managed that, yeah06:25
Unit193Gobelijn: Are you editing /etc/resolv.conf or actually changing it via network-manager?06:25
GobelijnWhen I change it in Network, it resets after a reboot06:26
diogenes_Gobelijn, maybe with something like dnsmasq06:29
Unit193I used nm to change it, via Connection Editor, etc.  It holds after reboot.06:31
Gobelijnwhat does nm stand for?06:32
GobelijnUnit193:06:32
Unit193NetworkManager06:32
Unit193nm-applet is the try frontend, there's also nmcli and other tools.06:33
Gobelijnnetwork manager is not 'installed' by default is it?06:35
Unit193It is.06:39
Gobelijnwhat method do you use? Automatic (dhcp) addresses only?06:41
GobelijnUnit193:06:41
Gobelijncause one website says this, another website says something else06:41
Unit193For the specific one I have in mind, pretty much yeah.06:42
GobelijnAnd what about IPv6?06:44
Unit193I leave that alone, I don't have it on the host in question.06:44
GobelijnK, let's see what it does, thanks06:46
GobelijnMeh06:48
Unit193I also don't use systemd-resolved.06:51
GobelijnUnit193, answer 1 did the trick. Had to make this /resolv.conf.d/base file and then install resolvconf. Now my DNS finally remains unaltered after rebooting. https://askubuntu.com/questions/157154/how-do-i-include-lines-in-resolv-conf-that-wont-get-lost-on-reboot07:39
Unit193resolvconf uses dnsmasq to cache requests, that specific file is used to add options before the automatic configuration so when you put your nameserver there you aren't actually using resolvconf to cache requests.07:43
GobelijnI had to install it to use this command though: sudo resolvconf -u07:51
GobelijnTo be honest I have no idea what it means what you said, all I know is that it works for now07:52
Unit193Sure, just figured I'd mention it.  Also you may want to check your config files in /etc/NetworkManager/ and see if anything is overriding /usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-dns-resolved.conf07:52
Unit193Right, so I guess we can say "good enough"07:52
GobelijnYeah, but it is a good thing to know more about it though07:52
xubuntu48wHi13:21
xubuntu48wAre you boycott iran?13:21
xubuntu48wAre you online!13:23
GobelijnIs it safe to uninstall gnome-keyring?13:49
GobelijnMy VPN probably doesn't autoconnect because it always asks for a keyring13:50
diogenes_Gobelijn, i'd rather not, you can configure the keyring to not nag you for password.13:50
GobelijnConfiguring that doesn't seem to be straightforward13:54
knomediogenes_, i just always uninstall it :P14:15

Gobelijngoddamn I thought I had the fix, by clicking on the icon next to the password entry in Network Manager14:31
GobelijnON which you can choose to store password for only this user, all users, not ask password, or ask for password every time14:31
Gobelijnbut still it doesn't automatically connect to the VPN14:32
GobelijnHow such trivial things can be so difficult is beyond me14:32

SeTunTunHi. Everytime i boot in xubuntu 18.04 it boots perfectly but i  get a message telling me about an error.21:11
SeTunTunI can clic on inform about the error or cancel but there is no iformation about what kind of error it is.21:12
SeTunTunis there any way to know it? by the way, it appears on the desktop after logging in.21:12
Spasshello SeTunTun, do you see any useful info in /var/crash/ directory? or maybe apport puts some dump files somewhere else21:25
Spasslast time I had a similar issue the culprit was light-locker on my laptop with nvidia drivers21:25
SpassI can see that apport logs its activity in /var/log/apport.log and /var/log/apport.log.121:28
SeTunTunSpass, hello, let me see21:37
SeTunTunyes, there are some errors related with lightdm and other things21:40
SeTunTunhttps://pastebin.com/Y32GsPsa21:43
Spasswell, that's a trace for sure, maybe /var/crash/_usr_sbin_lightdm.0.crash file will tell you more? do you have nvidia graphics card?21:46
Spasswhat you can try (it may help in some cases from what I know) is removing all files from /var/crash as root :)21:52
Spassthen if it was a "one time bug" that window should not bother you anymore21:53
SeTunTuni have a basic intel graphics card. I'll try to remove them21:53
SeTunTunthere is nothing in var/crash21:54
Spassmy problem was solved by removing light-locker and installing xscreensaver instead, but that may not be solution you're looking for21:55
Spasscan you lock your screen using Alt+F2 and running "xflock4" without a problem?21:55
Spassif it doesn't lock properly, maybe you have the same issue like me21:56
SeTunTuni can lock and unlock correctly21:57
Spassso the problem is elsewhere, you need to investigate further or wait for someone else to give you another answer21:58
Spassanother "extreme" solution is disabling apport completely21:59
SeTunTunmmm a bit radical ;)21:59
SeTunTundon't worry, i'll investigate. thanks a lot Spass22:00
Spassno problem, good luck and if you find something useful let us know22:00
SeTunTunof course22:02
rebabI've just installed Xubuntu. My boot screen doesn't show up. It has a glitch.22:32
