Bashing-omubuntu16046: we want to see "configuration: driver=nouveau" or similar .. else there is no driver loaded .00:10
ubuntu16046well i don't see that there so i guess it isn't loaded00:10
ubuntu16046but there is a GPU in the computer00:10
Bashing-omubuntu16046: Uh Huh .. ok. we get any hints from the GPU manager ? pastebin ' cat /var/log/gpu-manager.log ' .00:12

jamie_1okay, i need a quick hand, im doing a new ubuntu install, but this time i want to dissable the nvidia card before trying to boot, but im not sure how to do that from grub and im open to suggestions00:14
ubuntu16046it does say can't access u-d-c-nvidia-was-loaded file00:14
ubuntu16046is noveau blacklisted is yes00:15
Bashing-omubuntu16046: ' cat /var/log/gpu-manager.log | nc termbin.com 9999 ' and pass the resulting URL back here .00:15
Bashing-om!nomodeset | jamie_100:15
ubottujamie_1: A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter00:15

jamie_1so its the same as a live boot. sweet00:18
jamie_1that makes it easy00:18
jamie_1thanks again Bashing-om00:20

Bashing-omubuntu16046: Yeah .. I suspect as 16.04 .. but I have been wrong at least once before :P00:30
ubuntu16046Any command I can run to just reinstall the drivers?00:31
ubuntu16046I am on ethernet so should not take too long00:31
jamie_1Bashing-om: darn.... still getting stuck on boot even with nomodeset :/00:32
Bashing-omubuntu16046: Let's re-install the driver ,, see what results .. ' sudo apt update ; sudo apt upgrade ; sudo apt remove --purge nvidia ; sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall ' . Have the system install the driver it thinks best from what it has to choose from.00:34
Bashing-omjamie_1: with quiet splash removed, you should see the boot messages .. what is last ?00:35
jamie_1yeah i was about to do so00:35
jamie_1crap... it went it to grub right off bat again00:36
ubuntu16046ok done00:36

bojancarHello, I have a problem with 18.10, after upgrading from 18.04. The screen goes black after grub loads, and I am not even sure how to print any logs. This error was triggered by me installing ROCm binaries https://rocm.github.io/ROCmInstall.html#installing-from-amd-rocm-repositories. I can manage to boot up Ubuntu if I switch kernel to the old 4.15 I had previous to the distro upgrade.00:37
jamie_1yep......00:37
jamie_1without a legacy boot option00:37

cam1170Hey guys. I’m running Ubuntu and whenever I use QDirStat, K4DirStat, Calibre (ebook manager), or I assume anything with a big table and qt, my touchpad acts like it is clicking and dragging automatically when I touch my finger to the touchpad, whenever my mouse is over the large table part. Any tips? Works fine in WinDirStat in Wine. I believe it has the same behavior when I use an external mouse as well, like it likes to click a00:38
ubuntu16046same thing. system program problem detected flashes, then system update available flashes, then back to login screen00:38
jamie_1worst part is its my work laptop and i need it running ubuntu00:38
cam1170I've already asked this in the Linux For All discord and they sent me here.00:39
Bashing-omjamie_1: Well, sorry then ,, I have no EFI experience. Await others to guide you booting up from grub in a EFI environment ;(00:39
jamie_1Bashing-om: thats my issue XD if it was bios id be fine XD00:39
Bashing-omjamie_1: I am going to ride this ole hardware for as long as I can boot xubuntu :P00:40
Bashing-omubuntu16046: GPU manager still can not see the card ?  /var/log/gpu-manager.log .00:41
ubuntu16046Bashing-om: btw there's an old Mint install on this computer and that one does boot, though resolution is small00:41
jamie_1work gave me this a workstation... wasnt much choice in it, at least they gave me a 6 core with a gpu.. just a matter of getting the darn thing working XD00:41
Bashing-omubuntu16046: Well that is a good indication that the fault is not hardware related :)00:42
ubuntu16046https://termbin.com/p0x200:43
jamie_1Bashing-om: do you think it might work if i nuke windows completely?00:43
jamie_1was trying to avoid it, but ehh... if it makes it work00:44
jamie_1i can bring windows back another time00:44
Bashing-omjamie_1: Naw .. just a matter of seeing why grub is not seeing the kernel, But I am not familiar enough with EFI to know where grub is to look.00:44
jamie_1neither am i XD i work with servers in which efi isnt a thing00:45
ubuntu16046you think there's a chance updating to 18 04 2 will fix it?00:46
Bashing-omubuntu16046: Nope - need to fix where you are.00:47
jamie_1Bashing-om: the weird thing is its only seeing the windows fat partition as readable, the other two are reporting back no known file system detected00:47
jamie_1*3 partition00:48
Bashing-omjamie_1: Boot a liveUSB and see what ' sudo parted -l ' relates.00:48
jamie_1good idea.... ill get back to you once i know what it says00:48
tomreynjamie_1: latest bios is version 303 (2018/11/12). is this what you have?00:49
jamie_1ill have to check tomreyn, im not in bios right now00:49
tomreynlooks like work sold you a gaming laptop as a workstation00:49
Bashing-omubuntu16046: still scratching my head on " Is nvidia kernel module available? no " when we have a path "/lib/modules/4.4.0-143-generic/updates/dkms". What shows ' ls -al /lib/modules/4.4.0-143-generic/updates/dkms ' ?00:49
tomreynjamie_1: this, run on a linux terminal, should tell:  dmesg -t | grep ^DMI:00:50
Bashing-om!info linux-image-generic xenial00:51

jamie_1tomreyn: ^00:52
tomreynjamie_1: well it'll be the latest00:52
Bashing-omubuntu16046: Huh ! Getting in deep now ,, could be over my head.00:52
ubuntu16046Anything you want me to test in the mint os?00:54
jamie_1Bashing-om: well this just got a lot more interesting.... there is also a nvme drive in it too... also the drive is showing there is a 600gb ext4 with a fat32 boot partition00:55
jamie_1i did not know about the nvme drive00:55
tomreynthat's not /boot, that's ESP00:55
tomreynyour efi system partition00:56
jamie_1thats what its showing as00:56
jamie_1its 578mb00:56
jasmynyola00:58
Bashing-omubuntu16046: I am booting 18.04 - a radical departure from 16.04 as far as nvidia graphics is concerned - Makes it sorta tough to know what should be, bear with me as I look about.00:59
jamie_1tomreyn: do you think it might work if i fully nuke windows?01:00
Bashing-omjamie_1: That ESP partition is to be a FAT file system :)01:00
tomreynjamie_1: i don't see how it'll make ubuntu boot better, no.01:01
jamie_1its weird that ubuntu is seeing the partitions on a live boot but the grub does not see them as ext401:01
jamie_1the only partition that it can read is the efi01:02
tomreynjamie_1: reviewing your uefi configurations may be of use. disable secureboot, switch hard disk access mode from RAID to AHCI, if there is such.01:02
jamie_1i have secure boot dissabled.... i did that before even installing ubuntu01:02
jamie_1but ill see if there is a raid or ahci setup01:03
legreffieridk much about these, but if you're nvme chip is very recent the uefi might not be ready driver-wise to read it.01:04
legreffiermaybe you need to manually activate some driver in the grub config01:04
tomreynjamie_1: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/499301/troubles-while-installing-any-linux-os-on-asus-tuf-fx50401:04
jamie_1and its in ahci01:05
tomreynthose three preparatory steps may be a good idea. disabling the legacy usb only makes sense if you have current usb sticks, though. that is usb 2.0+01:05
jamie_1trying to use those settings now01:06
jamie_1fast boot might have fixed it....01:06
jamie_1but still have to wait to see if it boots01:06
jamie_1its not going to... i forgot to set nomodeset01:07
jamie_1lets see if we get any furter with nomodeset01:08
jamie_1if i can get to a terminal i should be able to get the proper system drivers01:08
tomreynjamie_1: since this is a dual gpu system, you may want to use nouveau.nomodeset=1 rather than just nomodeset.01:08
jamie_1i have access to tty01:08
jamie_1gui does not want to show but thats better than no terminal01:09
legreffierjamie_1: nah, ubuntu will just boot with some generic driver , it'll notify a better driver is available01:09
tomreynjamie_1: this person discusses their issues with installing ubuntu 18.04 on this system and how they worked around it: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/a4cscg/xpost_rlinuxlaptops_great_linux_experience_with/01:09
tomreynjamie_1: i assume oyu dont have internet access on it, yet?01:09
jamie_1i have ethernet01:09
tomreynand this ethernet connects to internet?01:10
tomreynso you can "ping -c1 1.1.1.1" without error?01:10
legreffiergreat linux experience = thinkpads :D01:10
Bashing-omubuntu16046: Let's get an idea of what/where X is looking. pastebin ' cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log ". see what we can finger out.01:11
tomreynjamie_1: the reason i'm asking is because it'd be nice to see the "lsblk" output.01:11
tomreynand maybe also "parted -ls"01:12

jamie_1okay so i have been able to install the drivers01:18
jamie_1well see how it goes when they are done installing01:18
legreffierit should "just work"01:18
legreffiermy dev co-workers got newer asus with nvidia... it was just about the nomodeset thing to get them up auto-magically01:19
jamie_1with ubuntu and nvidia.... its usually not that easy01:19
jamie_1i am running in nomodeset right now01:19
jamie_1installing from tty201:19
legreffieryou don't really need accelerated 3d for installing the os01:20
legreffieridk i'm using a PC from 2011 right now. best linux experience01:20
jamie_1i use it for vm's and running other software for work so i do need everything working for the most part01:21
legreffier"the keyboard is good and it has stickers."01:21
Bashing-omubuntu16046: Gimme a bit to read and we see what the paths are.01:21
Bashing-omubuntu16046: Yup "NVIDIA: Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module." we are going to have to get dirty and find out the why :(01:24
jamie_1drivers installed.... lets see how this goes on reboot01:25
jamie_1Bashing-om: we got ourselves a boot!01:27
jamie_1with accelerated 3d graphics01:27
Bashing-omjamie_1: Ain't tomreyn wonderful :)01:30
jamie_1Bashing-om: and tomreyn fastboot was the booting issue, then running it with nomodeset made me able to tty and install the nvidia drivers and were sitting pretty now01:30
jamie_1it was the fastboot XD and thanks a bunch both of you!01:30
tomreynheh, i iddn't do anything useful really01:31
tomreyncongrats01:31
jamie_1i work as a system engineer so i semi know what im doing, just better at getting running systems working fully XD you helped me get it running at least01:32
jamie_1so thank you01:32
jamie_1i never would have thought about that stupid fastboot being the issues01:32
tomreyn:)01:32
jamie_1now if i can migrate my linux to my nvme drive well be great!01:32
Bashing-omubuntu16046: ubuntu16046 We have "Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d" .. so we start down the rabit hole/ What shows ' ls -al /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d ' ?01:34

Bashing-omubuntu16046: As above ' cat /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf ' as "cat" rather than a "ls" :)01:52

jamie_1all the dials around the cpu circle are individual threads02:18
Bashing-omubuntu16046: I have no idea of what is not taking place - but I do have a 16.04 with the nvidia proprietary driver. In the interest of learning I am willing to reboot into it, but we loose all the termbins you have provided thus far. Do you want to continue with my efforts ?02:18
jamie_1had to re-write my overlay to adjust for the 8 more threads02:19
Bashing-omjamie_1: Looks like you got a operating system to play with :P02:20
jamie_1oh yeah! just need to finish setting up my vm's on the new system, already have my displaylink drivers, vs code, virtualbox, nvidia drivers, my custom overlay, only thing really left to do is get my few work software stuff running :D thanks agian for the help02:22
jamie_1i might need to adjust the overlay though and move it up about 15 pixels02:23
Bashing-omubuntu16046: Family matter to attend to .. I will be away for some time :(02:23
rwptomreyn, dmesg -w shows the syslog trace of the device but doesn't say if it is 2.0 or 3.0.  At least not directly.  I can't tinker it out of it.  It only says "high-speed USB".02:26
rwpAh... lspci.  Here is the hub.  Does look like 3.0.  Just an incorrect color marketing. http://termbin.com/mgaj02:39
tomreynrwp: There are OHCI (1.1), EHCI (2.0+), XHCI (3.0+).02:43
tomreynso yes this is a 3.0 or higher hub02:43
jamie_1tomreyn: any ideas for how i would make sure that intel gpu is still usable in case i want low power consumption on battery?02:43
tomreynrwp: "lsusb -t" to verify the device you attached is actually on this controller02:44
jamie_1nvm... just found my answer02:45
tomreynjamie_1: once you have working nvidia drivers they should provide a way to switch back and forth02:45
jamie_1yep, what i just found :D02:45
rwptomreyn, That looks like a good correlation. Looks like it is: http://termbin.com/m63m02:45
jamie_1the only issue im having is that its not listing intel gpu02:46
jamie_1i lied.... im a derp02:46
jamie_1sweet, thanks tomreyn, even got a proper swap too02:48
tomreynjamie_1: i didn't do that either ;-)02:49
jamie_1hey, you tried to point me in the right direction, i just beat ya to it02:49
tomreynrwp: yes, looks like it. though i think this is 3.0 whereas the other hub is 3.102:49
jamie_1only issue i always run into on dam asus laptops is the dam trackpad not working....02:50
jamie_1lets see if the standard grub modification works02:50
tomreynjamie_1: searching for you rmodel and linux i found reports that the trackpad should work start linux 4.1902:50
CarlFKhow do I type a nbs (non breaking space) into something like inkscape?   (exactly like inkscape)02:50
jamie_1let me see which kernal i have02:50
jamie_1ahhh... im on 4.1802:51
jamie_1time to do a kernal update02:51
tomreynubuntu 19.04 will release with a 5.0 kernel, and this will likely become available as linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04-edge in ubuntu 18.04 a couple weeks later02:53
tomreynbut you seem to be into running mainline, so i won't disturb you there ;)02:54
jamie_1tomreyn: would you happen to have a link though to the 4.19? and yes i know, i just need the mouse, this is my work computer02:55
tomreyn!mainline02:55
ubottuThe kernel team supply continuous mainline kernel builds which can be useful for tracking down issues or testing recent changes in the Linux kernel. More information is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds02:55
jamie_1thanks tomreyn02:56
jamie_1thats why i asked instead of digging... had a feeling ubottu had a link02:56
tomreynyou're welcome, jamie02:56
jamie_1thanks ubottu02:56
jamie_1should i go big and just roll into 5?02:56
tomreynit doesn't change how much your kernel is supported. ;-)02:57
jamie_1oh i know, not at all since its mainline02:58
jamie_1screw it, 5.0 or nothing XD02:59
jamie_1well not really... if it doesnt work ill move back to 4.1902:59
jamie_1whelp, time to see if it starts properly02:59
tomreynCarlFK: hold down compose key and press space key twice, release compose key.03:01
tomreynat least that's how you could generate it on a text editor, from where you should be able to copy and paste it if it doesn't work in the actual application (though it should)03:02
tomreynsee also https://help.gnome.org/users/gnome-help/stable/tips-specialchars.html03:03
CarlFKtomreyn: is "compose key" aka "super key" ?03:10
tomreynCarlFK: see the link i posted ;-)03:11
tomreynthe short answer is: most likely not03:11
CarlFKtomreyn: hmmm   I don't have this: "Click Disabled next to the Compose Key         setting."   but I have a plan B: edit the svg file and add the char in that way.  open it up in inkscape and see if it does its nbs thing.03:14
eraserpencil2hey guys, when do i know I should upgrade to a newer version of the kernel, lets say 4.20 for example03:16
tomreynCarlFK: hex code is c2 a003:16
eraserpencil2and why are newer kernels not necessarily a good idea03:18
tomreyneraserpencil2: you should upgrade to a newer version of the kernel when you upgrade ubuntu (which then happens automatically), or when you have hardware which is so new that it is not supported by the time you install ubuntu.03:21
tomreynother than that:03:21
tomreyn!latest03:21
ubottuPackages in Ubuntu may not be the latest. Ubuntu aims for stability, so "latest" may not be a good idea. Post-release updates are only considered if they are fixes for security vulnerabilities, high impact bug fixes, or unintrusive bug fixes with substantial benefit. See also !backports, !sru, and !ppa.03:21
tomreynsometimes hardware support is also added retrospecitvely / for older hardware, but this is not as common.03:23
pikapikaHow do you permanently change swappiness in 18.04?03:23
eraserpencil2so...if everything works fine, don't upgrade?03:24
eraserpencil2no need to switch to 4.20 if 4.15 works fine?03:25
tomreynpikapika: echo vm.swappiness=1 | sudo tee -a /etc/sysctl.d/20-swap.conf03:25
tomreyneraserpencil2: exactly03:25

qwebirc89209Hi, I would like to ask for help with the issue I am experiencing with ubuntu 18.10. /proc/cpuinfo not showing vxm flag on i7 7700hq (support is enabled in BIOS) and erlier I was working with centos 7 release 1810 nad fedora 29 where flag exist in /proc/cpuinfo. VXM support is needed for kvm where I need to spin arounf d 10 VM (without vxm support it is not possible too slow). I would be glad if somone could point me where I sh06:30
ryuoqwebirc89209: what are you talking about? KVM doesn't require such a thing.06:32
ryuoOh, it's typoed.06:32
qwebirc89209I know it wont require but to spin 10 VM without it is simply to slow06:33
ryuoVMX?06:33
qwebirc89209and I am more interested why it is not showing this flag06:33
qwebirc89209yes sorry typo twice06:34
ryuoqwebirc89209: did you grep for vmx?06:34

qwebirc89209on ubuntu 18.10 with the last kernel from apt upgrade it is not showing06:34
qwebirc89209on fedora on centos it was there06:34

qwebirc89209In case I will today test with ubuntu 18.04 LTS06:36
ryuoqwebirc89209: your feature is called VT-x, which is for virtio acceleration i believe...06:37
ryuoVT-d is what i was thinking of before.06:37
qwebirc89209so I will see if it is a bug in 18.10 or maybe something has changed. Till know all pages I found telling that it means the CPU does not support virtualization but in this case it is not true06:37
qwebirc89209Yes06:37
ryuowell, it usually means hardware support isn't present.06:37
qwebirc89209lscpu is showing virt type VT-x but I dont have flag in /proc/cpuinfo so kvm tell it is not supported06:38
qwebirc89209ryuo I found it butr why it is not supported on Ubuntu and it was supported on Centos ??06:38
qwebirc89209on the same hardware :)06:38
ryuoit's probably a kernel issue, if anything, providing the BIOS was using the same settings.06:38
qwebirc89209ok I will try 18.04 or compile newer kernel and see if it is working06:39
ryuoif you need such a critical feature, i'd suggest sticking with an LTS release.06:39
lotuspsychjeqwebirc89209: compiling own kernels are also not supported here, instead use !mainline kernels06:39
qwebirc89209ok06:39

BluesKajJediMaster, it's close enough to think about upgrading :-)10:42

JediMasterHave been doing it for the last 4 months =)10:42
JediMasterjust last client is dragging their feet a little10:43
matteotancawhat you guys are doing about php 7.0 in your xenial servers?10:43
JediMastervast majority were already on 16.04 or 18.0410:43
JediMasterphp 7.x was the main issue with our upgrades10:43
TrangarJust install win7, so you'll have to upgrade again at the end of the year10:43
Ben64php7 works well10:43
JediMasterUpgrading the web app or patching it to be compatible was the only solution10:44
matteotancayeah, I don't know if xenial will give us an upgrade to php 7.1 or 7.2, so I'm raplacing my xenials with bionic10:44
JediMasterThere aren't many changes in PHP 7 that aren't backwards compatible, but there are a few minor ones. The performance improvement is huge however10:44
ppfare there any other meaningful sound settings apps besides pavucontrol?10:45
Ben64matteotanca: very unlikely for versions of a package to change in a release10:45
matteotancaI'm worried about php7.0 EOL10:45

jgh-hi im looking at installing ubuntu server 18.04 alongside an existing windows partition.  I have resized the windows partition and am in the manual partition screen of the installer (the other options being to use the entire disk)13:39
jgh-I don't see other partitions listed, and Add Partition allows me to create a partition up to the full size of the disk, so i'm a bit concerned that it will overwrite the existing partitions13:40
lordcirthjgh-, how did you resize the partition? Are you sure you only have one drive?13:41
jgh-I have two drives, one of them is fully owned by windows and the other is half windows. I resized it using the windows disk manager. It's a 500GB disk and has 200GB free right now for linux to take over13:41
jgh-this is in the text-based installer, not the GUI installer by the way.13:42

leftyfberaserpencil1: what exactly are you trying to accomplish?14:28
eraserpencil1and when i click it, I get a "Fatal server error: no screens found (EE)"14:28
mjaykeraserpencil1, does sound like a reinstall would be quickest way to solve your problem, then just restore your backups14:31
eraserpencil1mjayk: a fresh install would probably fix it, but im trying not to do one.14:32
pragmaticenigmaeraserpencil1: It honestly sounds like more time would be spent trying to troubleshoot, and then repair. I would also recommend a reinstall. And remember to make a backup of your system before you start changing configurations. Then it's a quick restore to bring it back online14:32
pragmaticenigmaeraserpencil1: Before each configuration change, driver tweak, or other system change, I make a backup image of my system using clonezilla. When I make a mistake, I can get back to the beginning within 5 minutes with a restore14:33
eraserpencil1hmmm14:35
gyles19I'd try purging the X11 packages and re-installing them.14:35
eraserpencil1it sounds like missing X11 config files or something.14:36

lordcirthfub, Gnome uses GTK, KDE uses QT, other desktops vary. Since Gnome is very popular, it's likely Gnome.19:46
fublordcirth: what does xfce use?19:46
lordcirthqwebirc23423, yes, classic doesn't use AppArmor. snaps auto update, apt packages use whatever your autoupdate setting is.19:46

OerHeksstudio-user761,  for a solution, we need more info than that, ubuntu version etc22:01
OerHeksone would give such info unasked..22:01
studio-user76118.10 ubuntu studio xfce , pavucontrol enable hardware checked . all other keys function . sound funtion all input and output function . simple sudden loss of volume key control22:02
Term1nalhaving an issue trying to install steam on 18.04, I keep getting stuck on these packages: https://ghostbin.com/paste/tmhqw22:03
Term1nalI've tried everything I can google but nothing is working22:03
OerHeksstudio-user761, and hardware?22:04
OerHeksTerm1nal, update properly before installing stuff, apt update && apt dist-upgrade22:04
Term1nalI've done that22:04
studio-user761terminal sudo apt-get upgrade  perhaps will upgrade packages needed to finish install22:04
Term1nalit does not.22:04
Term1nal0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.22:05
studio-user761which distro ?22:05
studio-user761studio ?22:05
Term1nalplain old 18.0422:05
OerHeksdid you add achtecture i386?22:05
Term1nalyes22:06
OerHeksmultiverse enabled?22:06
studio-user761multimedia codecs installed ?  restricted extras ect ?22:06
Term1nalmultiverse enabled, and as far as I know about the restricted extras/codecs yes22:06
yaaic|demoGabile22:07
OerHeksif so, install : gdebi-core libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 # and try again, https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-steam-on-ubuntu-18-04-bionic-beaver-linux22:07
studio-user761that message you posted sounds like packages arent updated or missing .22:07
Term1nal@OerHeks https://ghostbin.com/paste/tmhqw22:08
studio-user761what would cause volume hardware keys to stop working from a functioning state ?22:09
studio-user761could upgrading packages have caused obsolete dependencies to be removed responsible for volume hardware key function ?22:14
OerHeksTerm1nal, sudo apt-get install --install-recommends steam # should work fine, what linux version is this?22:16
Term1nalubuntu 18.0422:16
ubunt55522:17
kitijaHi22:18
texlaUpgraded 16.04 to 18.04.2 using software updater wmctrl now xfce how to change to gnome shell22:18
kitijaWhere am I?22:18
Bashing-omtexla: At the password screen, what desktops are offered from the gear icon drop down ?22:19
Term1nalOerHeks: this is a weird message22:20
Bashing-omkitija: This is ubuntu support channel :)22:20
Term1nallibglx-mesa0 : Depends: libglapi-mesa (= 18.2.2-0ubuntu1~18.04.2) but 1:18.0.1-0~a~padoka0 is to be installed22:20
studio-user761install the package then22:21
studio-user761sudo apt-get install libglapi-mesa  ??? no ?22:22
Term1nalthat's where it falls over22:22
texlaBashing-om, none showing unable to change to another ne22:22
Term1nallibglapi-mesa is already the newest version (1:18.0.1-0~a~padoka0)22:22
studio-user761hmm22:23
OerHeksTerm1nal, oh, padoka ppa installed?22:23
Term1nalI ran ppa-purge on padoka PPA22:23
OerHeksthere you go, that bites22:23
OerHeksafter reversal, reboot..22:23
studio-user761so you have broken packages ?22:23
Term1nalhow do I remove "1:18.0.1-0~a~padoka0" package?22:23
Term1nalUbuntu doesn't seem to think I have broken packages, I think it's this padoka library that's causing issues, it's expecting some other version22:24
OerHeksTerm1nal, if you performed ppa-purge, reboot, then the obsolete packages can be removed22:24
studio-user761if you purged it cant you simply reinstall the latest ppa?22:24
OerHeks"latest ppa?22:25
Term1nalI think it doesn't want the ppa version22:25
studio-user761correct rather22:25
Term1nalhow do I remove this package manually?22:25
OerHeksTerm1nal, told you22:25
Term1nalI did that already22:25
Term1nalIt's still showing22:25
Bashing-omtexla: what shows ' dpkg -l ubuntu-desktop ' ? then ' apt show ubuntu-desktop ' . Sure you want to proceed ?22:25
OerHeksapt autoremove/clean22:25
Term1nalit doesn't work22:26
the2048Term1nal, if it can't be solved normally and un-normally, I'd say wipe the system after backing up the contents of your home folder22:26
Term1nalall I need to do is remove that one package22:26
studio-user761sudo apt-get remove libglapi-mesa22:26
OerHekswell, i guess you did not reboot, you are still here22:26
AfshaalAnyone happen to know any good hardware troubleshooting channels on Freenode?22:26
OerHeks##hardware is the place to be22:27
Term1naltrying to remove that package wants libglx0 removed22:27
Term1nalif I try to remove libglx0, it wants to remove 7GB worth of my entire OS22:27
* Afshaal slaps head22:27
Afshaalthanks :322:27
studio-user761oof22:27
Term1nalso how do I surgically remove taht single package and reinstall?22:27
=== Afshaal is now known as Afdal
studio-user761I dunno man once you start purging stuff all kinda funnies can happen .  I recently sudo apt-get autoremove --purge and borked my whole OS lol22:28
studio-user761had all kinds of broken packages . found the log list for them . removed one by one still broke22:29
studio-user761ubuntu studio 18.10 new install , intel hda 8th gen i5 8gb + 16gb intel optane   volume hardware keys stopped working after functioning well . No changes except upgrading some packages causing system errors as they were expecting newer versions .22:39
studio-user761enable hardware volume control toggle checked on pavucontrol22:39
studio-user761reset services related to volume control hard keys22:40
studio-user761no change volume up down and mute non functional22:40
acebrianjuanHi22:43
studio-user761hi there22:44
acebrianjuanis it possible to make my ubuntu laptop to behave like a wifi access point in order to provide internet connection to my cellphone?22:45
xamithanyes22:45
acebrianjuanmy laptop is connected to the internet via ethernet cable22:45
acebrianjuanxamithan: do you know where shoud I start looking?22:46
Term1nalwelp, fixed it. Re-adding and re-installing padoka PPA seemed to sort out the problem.22:46
Term1nalit must've gotten removed during the upgrade from 17.10 to 18.0422:46
xamithanyou on gnome DE?   If so: https://vitux.com/make-your-ubuntu-pc-a-wireless-access-point/22:46
Hydr0p0nXHi  - can anyone tell me if all of this -> https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/kerberos.html.en <- is really necessary to just generate a kerberos token that will be imported to my nas as a one time thing?22:47
acebrianjuanxamithan: 18.04 LTE22:47
acebrianjuan*LTS22:47
studio-user761I thought so . purging the ppa should only need to re install22:47
Term1nalyeah, purging didn't seem to work, perhaps because it wasn't fully installed to begin with22:47
Term1nalhad to boot into recovery root console to do it22:48
Term1nalsince rebooting my graphics was failing after force-removing the package22:48
studio-user761this was an upgrade failure ?  oh yea lot of times ppa are for specific versions and wont upgrade automatically . simply uncheck the old ones and refresh the source list then re install and it will give you the correct version22:48
Term1nalso the desktop environment failed to load, and kept looping black screen back to shit-stemd launch22:49
=== Moyst_ is now known as Moyst
Term1nalthat really needs to be fixed22:49
acebrianjuanxamithan: maan! that was dead simple :) thank you very much!22:49
Term1nalif the graphical environment fails to load, don't keep re-attempting to load it22:49
Term1nalit overrides even attempting to use secondary TTYs22:49
studio-user761hmmm22:50
xamithanHeh,  it's not so simple on ubuntu server,  but glad it works22:50
Term1nalyou can switch to them but it switches back to the TTY trying to launch the graphical desktop22:50
Term1nalso it's impossible to do anything without rebooting to recovery console, enabling networking, forcing dhclient on the network adapter so it actually gets an address22:50
Term1nalthen doing the necessary commandline package managing22:51
studio-user761so is it working now or did you launch client from terminal22:51
Term1nalseesm to be working now22:51
Term1nalit's still installing prerequisites for steam package22:51
studio-user761dependencies ?22:51
Krenairhas anyone reported having bizarre issues with shift+number combinations producing special characters like !"£$%^&*() on bionic lately?22:51
Term1nalbunch of mesa crap22:51
studio-user761hmm22:52
studio-user761what are you after on steam ?22:52
Term1nalbut it's working fine now22:52
Krenairrecently these have been often outputting nothing for me unless I press some random numbers first22:52
Term1nalmostly a bunch of i386 equivalents for mesa packages22:52
Term1nalthat seemed to be missing22:52
studio-user761noooo why are you installing steam ? fortnight or some such ?22:53
Term1nala few games I play on this machine at my IT job22:54
studio-user761I was here just trying to get my volume hardware keys to work again .22:54
studio-user761I was going over everything I did that may have effected due to this being a new install of the OS and they were working . Im thinking the packages I upgraded causing obsolete errors might have borked something22:55
Term1nalI have like 90 games that run natively on Linux in my steam library XD22:55
studio-user761nice . I just play my 1094 NES and n64 roms on my laptop :D22:55
studio-user761im old school like fat crayons22:56
Term1nalhah22:56
PlatonidesKrenair: shift+number producing that looks expected...22:56
Krenairyes22:56
Krenairthat's what I do expect22:56
Krenairthe problem is sometimes those combinations are doing nothing22:56
Platonidesyou missed that from your report :)22:57
Term1nalall I know is I launched steam and it said it had to install some missing packages, so I told it to go for it, and then it came back with that error. So it sent me on the goose chase to figure out wtf was wrong cause it was working last week22:57
KrenairI split it over two lines and other people were talking, so22:57
Platonidesoh, sorry22:58
Platonidesmy fault22:58
Term1nalI also have Ableton Live 10 installed on this Ubuntu box, running via playonlinux/wine22:58
Krenairnp22:59
PlatonidesI don't really understand how pressing random numbers first can fix it22:59
Krenairyeah me neither22:59
Krenairthe first time it happened I was just like22:59
Krenair"Wait what, why are my keys not working"22:59
Krenairso naturally, keyboard mash time22:59
studio-user761yea always uncheck old ppas for prev distros , refresh and re install .  Probably smart to make a list of important ppa s22:59
Platonidesdid you check with xev that you receive all expected  keypress events ?23:00
Platonideshmm, funny23:01
Platonidesit receives keysym 0x34 (4) vs keysym 0x24 (dollar)23:01
PlatonidesI might also have a look at the xmodmap23:02
Platonidesmaybe the keyboard is sometimes not detecting the presses?23:02
KrenairPlatonides, thanks, I will check that next time it occurs23:02
KrenairI doubt it's a hardware problem as the issue appears to be in the combinations23:02
Krenairwhen this happens, the numbers themselves are fine23:02
Krenairbut you hold shift and nothing comes out23:02
Platonidesa hearing-impaired keyboard looks more likely than such magic event23:03
Platonidesyou could produce that if the symbols weren't mapped in the xmodmap23:03
Platonidesbut of course, if it then works, they are23:03
texlaBashing-om, https://pastebin.com/zhrRNtzL will show the other in a minute23:06

Bashing-omtexla: Be aware I am not a proponent of multi-desktops. That "show" was to allow you to make a educated decision before proceeding. You are aware that there can be duplications of dektop apps when 2 DEs are installed, right ?23:13
texlaBashing-om, https://pastebin.com/9nWgNhXR23:15
Bashing-omtexla: "ii  ubuntu-desktop" says that it is installed, As such I do expect there to be a option in that startup dropdown to activate GDM3's environment. check again ?23:18
texlaBashing-om, I do not want dual de The xfce is a pita in this distro I want to only have gnome-shell23:18
Bashing-omtexla: Not for the faint hearted to try and remove a DE ... best I can advise is a clean fresh install of ubuntu.23:20
texlaBashing-om, Great suggestion will proceed with your idea thanks for the info and help I have a dvd so should be easy reinstall23:22
Bashing-omtexla: How are your scripting skills ? I do have an old script to aid in removing a DE to return to a pure environment. But will need to be adjusted to your use case.23:23

chrometiger_I know this may not be a ubuntu question but every time I boot my computer I have to boot it at least twice.   sometimes says "error, failed to read write through hd0"   any ideas ?23:46
KrenairPlatonides, I'm also seeing occasional repeating of characters I type23:49
Krenairlike sometimes I'll go to do something like 01 and out will come 010123:49
