UghhHi everyone, I installed Xubuntu on my new laptop and now I get a boot error on restart and I can't get back in.13:00
UghhGave up waiting for root file system Device. Common problems:--boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)13:01
Ughh--check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)  -missing module ( cat /proc/modules; last dev13:02
diogenes_Ughh, could be something with the HDD13:03
UghhIt's a brand new laptop really this happened to my last laptop too13:03
UghhI've tried xubuntu on two laptops now and both have given me this problem13:03
diogenes_is it lenovo?13:04
UghhFirst one was this new one is axer13:04
UghhAcer13:04
diogenes_is it legacy bios or uefi?13:05
UghhUhh I think both but I only got it to boot under uefi13:05
UghhI set it to uefi if that's what you're asking13:05
diogenes_try to re-install but with legacy bios, uefi off, because uefi is known to create problems on some systems, also backup data first and format HDD to mbr instead of gpt13:06
UghhUhh13:06
UghhThe later, formatting to MBR instead of gpt13:06
UghhCan you elaborate? Never heard of that or those terms13:06
diogenes_Ughh, first backup data and then go to bio and which CSM or uefi off and turn on legacy bios, then go ahead installing and in the installer you pick Create new partition table and pick msdos instead of gpt, that;s about it.13:08
diogenes_s/bio/bios*13:09
UghhOkay so I'm in bios right now I'm changing to legacy and will make boot order to DVD first as that is what I'm using to instal13:09
diogenes_ok13:09
UghhDiogenes_ I pick use LVM all the same xorreco13:16
UghhCorrect?13:16
diogenes_Ughh, you want an encryped partition?13:16
UghhYes fde13:16
diogenes_then yes but honestly i never encrypt anything so not a great deal of experience with LVM13:17
UghhAt no point have I ever seen the options you mentoment either13:18
UghhBoth times installing zubutux13:18
UghhI'm guessing it will come up later then ?13:19
UghhMentioned earlier* sorry13:19
diogenes_Ughh, what options?13:19
UghhThe msdos instead of gpt13:20
DojomojoI have problem in my xubuntu installation... Initially it was working fine but now it has regular issues of keyboard not working .... Touchpad not working and an error message flashes every time i boot into .... Can anyone help13:21
UghhDiongenes_ I'm installing now if you gotta help him I can wait13:21
UghhDiogenes_ I can't thank you enough by the way for the help you've helped me twice now and we're so patient13:26
UghhWere* sorry typing from phone is harder than I thought13:26
diogenes_Ughh, so it's installing?13:27
UghhYes sir and I did some reading while sitting here I see what you're saying someone else seems to have reported similar issue on Ubuntu forum saying he had to install 2 instances on legacy mode after it failed in uefi after rebooting few times which is what happened to me13:28
UghhDiogenes_ I know this is a long shot but you don't think the problem could be me trying to install the .10 version instead of the .4 LTS release ?13:30
diogenes_Ughh, no clue, i think 10 version should be working fine too.13:43
UghhThanks install is almost done13:43
UghhDone!13:44
UghhDiogenes_ you here by chance14:19
diogenes_Ughh, yes14:19
UghhInstalled updates said it had to restart it did so now black screen on boot :'(14:20
diogenes_Ughh, try to boot a different kernel14:21
diogenes_the previous one14:21
UghhSorry ?14:21
diogenes_Ughh, as you reach grub, go to advanced and there you will be given  list of kernels14:22
diogenes_pick the one with the lowers version number14:22
diogenes_and hit enter14:22
UghhOk14:23
UghhDiogenes_ believe it or not that worked14:25
UghhI had to pick the .10 kernel ?14:25
diogenes_Ughh, then the newest kernel is no good for your hardware14:25
UghhDoes that mean I need the .4 release sir ?14:26
UghhSorry I'm still new to Linux14:26
diogenes_that means you can use whatever release you want but the kernel version must be the one you are running right now, to find it ut run: uname -r14:27
UghhOk14:27
UghhHow do I always make sure I use this kernel even in future releases14:27
UghhWill I have to go-to advanced and manually pick it each time14:27
diogenes_Ughh, install grub-customizer and there you can setup which kernel you want your system to boot from14:28
UghhSeriously thank you so much diogenes_ for all your help14:28
UghhOne last thing, is using an older kernel though mean my system is less secure or won't support future of?14:29
diogenes_Ughh, no problem.14:29
UghhOs?*14:29
diogenes_Ughh, not at all, your kernel is having the latest patches so no worres and it's even possible that the further releases will even fix the issue your are facing with that kernel which doesn't work at the moment14:29
Ughh4.8.0-10 it is thanks14:30
diogenes_you're welcome14:30
UghhHey diogenes_ I don't mean to bother but what about using sudo apt-get purge to remove the other kernels and headers14:39
UghhWouldn't that force xubuntu to use proper kernel14:39
diogenes_Ughh, you can do that but as you have little experience with that, you might get in troubles but in any case, that's how we all learn, 9 times we do things wrong and then finally the 10th time we learn how to do things right.14:41
diogenes_so no problem with that.14:41
UghhI love the way you think!!14:41
diogenes_:)14:41
UghhSo diogenes_ I restarted how do I get to the grub loader it does not load automatic14:42
UghhI have to hard reset to get it14:42
diogenes_Ughh, while booting keep the shift key pressed down14:43
diogenes_and grub should appear14:43
UghhDiogenes_ so do I do purge Ubuntu, with Linux 4.18.0-16-generic14:49
UghhCause I got an error unable to locate package Ubuntu with and Linux lol14:49
UghhDisregard14:51
UghhI had to do linux-image-4 18.0-16-generic14:51
diogenes_yep14:52
UghhDiogenes_ do I need to do a second one to rid recovery mode14:53
UghhDisregard14:54
UghhTrial by fire prevails again lol14:54
furionessHello guys. On 18.10 release is written that have place bug with system tray when u could see 2 network manager icons. So, here on 18.04 I have something that sounds relative - sometimes I don't get all icons. First time (when I had no idea about) I added another sys tram plugin so I could get 2 copies of same icons (and still sometimes 0 some specified), but now I'm using just xfce4-panel/systray14:57
salamanderrakeI don't have/can't find my usb thumb drive, so I first tried to install the install iso onto a partition, then I tried to just put the iso on the partition and mount the iso, the install process was fine until It said I need to unmount /cdrom, why the hell does it need to unmount a partition its not using?17:08
salamanderrakethat whole physical disk/drive isn't being formatted17:08
salamanderrakeI just have my /home partition on it17:09
salamanderrakeand swap17:09
salamanderrakeand now I'm stuck with the installer that won't let me go back or continue or restart the install process over again.17:09
xubuntu22whello xubuntu community17:53
xubuntu22wi'd like to know how to auto login at the start in xubuntu17:54
xubuntu22wi modified "60-xubuntu.conf" file with "autologin-user=MyAccountName"17:55
xubuntu22wbut it still ask me to login when i restart my computer17:55
Spasshello xubuntu22w, you need to edit "/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf" file17:56
xubuntu22wThank you for your reply Spass17:57
Spassand under "[Seat:*]" add "autologin-user=xxx"17:57
Spasswhere xxx is your username17:57
Spassthen it should work17:57
xubuntu22wthanks a lot !17:57
xubuntu22wbtw i'm using xubuntu 18.0417:58
Spassyes, it should work on that just fine :)17:58
xubuntu22wHey Spass , so i create lightdm.conf file because it wasn't there and i wrote the same content of "60-xubuntu.conf" in it and it still doesn't work18:28
xubuntu22w[Seat:*]18:29
xubuntu22wuser-session=xubuntu18:29
xubuntu22wautologin-user=MyUsername18:29
xubuntu22w3 lines18:29
Spassthis is how it looks on my machine - http://dpaste.com/1HXHCJY18:30
Spassreplace "xxx" and try that18:30
xubuntu22wyou're using xubuntu 18.04 ?18:30
xubuntu22wi'll try that thank you18:30
Spassright now 18.10, but it worked on 18.04 too18:31
Spassand maybe revert your changes in "60-xubuntu.conf" to defaults, so just two lines - "[Seat:*]" and "user-session=xubuntu"18:35
