__Myst__updated the alternative00:02
__Myst__nothing changed00:02
brainwashdoesn't sound like it should have any effect00:03
brainwashif you use the Xfce session00:03
ninebitsi seem to be unable to install xubuntu over lubuntu. I've created a usb drive with the installer, place it in the lubuntu machine's usb port, and restart, but it doesn't boot into xubuntu. are there common mistakes people make when doing this?00:39
brainwashninebits: did you check if the usb drive is detected in the bios/uefi?00:42
ninebitsi have been messing around in bios, but i'm a bit scared of it00:43
ninebitsi may be trying to be too careful00:43
brainwashI guess you probably did to ensure that the boot priority is correct00:43
ninebitswell, in my bios, i don't really see a boot priority00:43
ninebitsyou're talking about CD-ROM, USB, HardDrive, etc... right?00:44
brainwashyes00:44
ninebitsya, i'm not seeing anything like that in my bios.00:44
ninebitscrazy.00:44
ninebitsi'm going to reboot into bios and make some notes.00:45
brainwashgot any other PC?00:45
ninebitsya, i'll get my daughters' and see if i can get hexchat going there00:46

ilias_grhi all. I am on xubuntu 18.04.2. Sometimes (not always) after the system starts I see on my panel 2 icons of nm aplet. One for Status Notifier Plugin and one for Notification Area. Other times only the icon for Status Notifier Plugin was shown. I read about this issue affecting other users too. Is there any permanent solution instead of just restart the panel (xfce4-panel -r) which works but not permanently?05:58
nikolamThunar dies if I drag-and-drop image form Thunar to the Thunderbird session, Thunderbird started with ssh -X , as another user on machine.08:57
* pikapika diogenes_ 15:14
* diogenes_ roger that pikapika :)15:14
pikapika:)15:15
spyke581Is it possible to add an afp network share to the fstab? Or any other way to mount an AFP share on boot?15:19
GridCubespyke581: https://stackoverflow.org/wiki/Mount_an_AFP_share_from_Linux15:24
GridCubebut that's not like official or anything15:24
GridCubeso if you do that you're on your own15:24
GridCubein any case if that works you just need to make that a script that executes when you boot, not in fstab but still15:25
spyke581alright ill check it out. thanks15:26
supersoniczeushi, I have an issue on XUBUNTU 18.04. Can anyone help me, please?15:30
diogenes_supersoniczeus, would you let us guess what the issue is?15:30
supersoniczeusthank you. I recently updated my xubuntu to 18.04 and during FIRST startup the mouse lags; I have to reboot my system to make work as expected15:31
supersoniczeusI have do this always ... it's annoying15:32
supersoniczeusI tried to find info around, then I decided to join the channel15:32
diogenes_supersoniczeus, your mouse and what about the touchpad?15:32
supersoniczeusIt's a desktop PC, it haven't a touchpad15:33
brainwashdid you try a simple relog?15:33
supersoniczeusThe problem occours first the login15:33
brainwashor un+replugging the mouse15:34
supersoniczeusduring startup the XUBUNTU label is not rendered properly15:34
supersoniczeusI think it's not about the mouse, but something related to graphics driver or so on15:35
brainwashprobably15:36
diogenes_supersoniczeus, have you got nvidia proprietary installed?15:37
supersoniczeusRebooting the system (not halting!) resolves the issue, but every morning I have to do the same15:37
supersoniczeusNo proprietary driver15:37
brainwashI would compare the output of "dmesg" and Xorg related log files in /var/log/15:38
brainwashbad boot vs. good boot15:39
supersoniczeusWhat I have to search for? Unfortunately I am not so experienced!15:41
brainwashdifferences I guess15:42
Axzercionin the xorg logs any line that contains (EE)15:42
brainwashmainly lines which address gpu initialization and driver loading15:43
brainwashyou can share the files here also15:44
brainwashvia https://paste.ubuntu.com15:44
supersoniczeuswell, in Xorg.0.log I see:15:44
supersoniczeus[    28.071] Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,15:44
supersoniczeus(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,15:44
supersoniczeus(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.15:44
supersoniczeus[    28.071] (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Tue Mar 26 09:16:19 201915:44
supersoniczeus[    28.146] (==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"15:44
brainwash--> https://paste.ubuntu.com15:45
supersoniczeuspardon, this is my first IRC session. I paste another content here: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/RyxyD9h5TB/15:47
brainwashlooks like some generic output15:50
brainwashlike said before, best to compare the file and output of "dmesg" from the two different states (bad boot and good boot)15:51
supersoniczeusAh okay, I will try to perform comparison15:52
diogenes_supersoniczeus, you could albo try to boot a previous kernel.15:53
supersoniczeusdiogenes_, how can I do that?15:55
diogenes_supersoniczeus, while booting keep shift key pressed down and once you reach grub menu, hit advanced and you gonna see several kernels to boot from15:56
diogenes_chose the one with the minor version15:56
supersoniczeusokay. Saying that it works, what I have to do next?15:58
diogenes_to lock down that kernel and make it default15:58
supersoniczeusokay15:58
supersoniczeusI am going to try this and going also to understand better the dmesg and xorg output. Thanks for now guys15:59
diogenes_ok good luck15:59
diogenes_come with a feedback16:00
supersoniczeusokay! Thanks!16:00
supersoniczeusdiogenes_, brainwash: thanks again for the help. I uninstalled the new kernel and now it works like a charm!16:30
diogenes_supersoniczeus, so it was the kernel issue?16:31
supersoniczeusI don't know if it was strictly related, but now it works properly. I made several tries, and I confirm that the problem occurred after a system update16:32
supersoniczeusnow, my quiestion is: what will happen on the next system update?16:33
diogenes_so you went back to use the older kernel?16:33
diogenes_the system udate will not harm but the kernel might16:33
supersoniczeusyes, I wen back to old kernel linux-image-4.15.0-4516:34
supersoniczeusthe problem was with linux-image-4.15.0-4616:34
diogenes_right so as for now skip updates16:35
supersoniczeusis it possible to update and jump the linux-image-4.15.0-46? Or does xubuntu adopt an incremental update?16:35
diogenes_until the kernel passes that particular version16:35
GridCubeoor try the next one instead16:35
supersoniczeusyeah, I got it16:36
supersoniczeusthanks again guys16:36
supersoniczeusHave a nice day16:36
xubuntu70whi, i installed xubuntu core via the ubuntu mini.iso. I want to theme xfce like it appears at default, but the xubuntu core package doesn't include xfce's standard themes. where can I install them?16:50
diogenes_xubuntu70w, in synaptic, look for themes.16:56
xubuntu70wdiogenes_ not seeing a package for the default xfce4 themes17:02
xubuntu70wdiogenes_ I'm looking for the themes at the bottom of the list in first screenshot on this page https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-settings/appearance17:05
=== NegativeFlare_ is now known as NegativeFlare
Spassxubuntu70w, I think those themes weren't upgraded in a long time, so it probably isn't a best choice for new Xubuntu / Xfce17:08
Spassmaybe try Adwaita or Greybird instead?17:08
xubuntu70wspass I like the 'retro' look of the older xfce themes17:10
xubuntu70wspass I found two packages in synaptic titled gtk2-engines-xfce and gtk3-engines-xfce, are those what I am looking for17:11
Spassprobably yes17:11
xubuntu70wI don't want to download something that's not in the ubuntu repository17:11
xubuntu70wspass what's the difference between gtk2 and gtk3 and how does they differ in regard to the xubuntu core DE?17:12
SpassAdwaita, Greybird and Numix are in the official repositories17:12
xubuntu70wi trust xfce's own repository as well17:12
Spassbasically most new applications are using GTK3, so they may not look good on an older/deprecated themes, like those you want, but nothing is stopping you from using those of course, I'm just saying that you may see some issues17:17
xubuntu70wok thanks17:20
xubuntu70wspass: but xfce is primarily gtk2 correct?17:22
Spasscurrently Xfce is being ported to GTK3, but 18.04 LTS has Xfce version 4.12, so not many programs are GTK3 there17:24
Spassso depends on what version do you have installed, 18.04 or 18.10?17:24
xubuntu70wspass 18.0417:27
Spassso you should be fine in most cases, but if you'll see an app that looks not ok, that could mean that it's a GTK3 app (like GNOME Disks for example) and new theme is required to display it properly, you have to try on your own I guess17:29
xubuntu70wok, I'll try gtk2-engines-xfce and see if that works17:29
Spassanyway, Adwaita, Numix and/or Greybird are themes, that you could have as a backup17:29
sm0ruxFrom today I get an error message (https://send.firefox.com/download/84e917f0a1/#IOZvfeMnFIqhXrB-8eRZXg) each time17:53
sm0ruxI restart my laptop. When I click "Report problem" nothing happens. How can I find out what cases the message?17:55
Spasssm0rux, see what's in your /var/crash/ folder, it should tell you what's causing the problem18:05
Spassthen, you can try to delete files within it and restart18:05
sm0ruxSpass: Thanks a zillion, highly appreciated! I'll give your advice a try!18:09
sm0ruxSpass: Your advice seems to work. Again I'm so impressed by the power of all you guys in this channel!18:16
Spassgood to hear18:17
sm0ruxSpass: Thank you for your help!18:20
Spassglad that my hint helped in your case18:20
johanhelmuthHey, do you guys know any pre-install software on a new installation that is known to "break" the system if removed, even though the name and description of the software sounds/look unrelated to anything that would be considered "unsafe" to remove? I just installed Xubuntu, removed a lot of bloaty software that wouldn't need, tried to make sure that I would only remove software that seemed unrelated22:07
johanhelmuthto anything important (based on name and description), yet it completely broke my system.22:07
johanhelmuthTried to look for a compiled list online for pointers, but couldn't find anything really.22:07
gnrpjohanhelmuth: What is "completely broken"?22:26
gnrpit is difficult to determine your judgement of "useful sounding software" ;)22:26
johanhelmuthYeah, you are right. A second glance at my text and I realize no useful information was in there, sorry about that. :P22:28
Spassjohanhelmuth, hello, I think I saw a related thread somewhere lately, and the solution was to install xfdesktop again, iirc, can't find it now22:32
johanhelmuthSo after removing games, application finder, bluetooth adapters/manager, catfish, dictionary, mail reader, onboard, onboard settings, parole, power manager (i'm using a desktop, not a laptop, not useful for me?), ristretto - after reboot and then login, no desktop or anything shows up. I can only see my background, no panel, no desktop-menu (righ-click) no nothing.22:32
Spassit was probably about thunderbird22:32
Spassdo you see your mouse cursor?22:33
johanhelmuthYes I do22:33
johanhelmuthThe only thing I see22:33
Spassyeah, check if you have xfdesktop installed22:33
johanhelmuthWell, problem is that I reinstalled everything, haha22:33
johanhelmuthI just haven't removed anythign this time around, yet22:34
Spassdid you remove thunderbird last time?22:34
johanhelmuthI did actually, yeah!22:34
johanhelmuthThat's annoying, since I prefer Mailspring over Thunderbird >:(22:34
Spasshmm, so maybe I remember that correctly then, I need to find the exact thread22:34
johanhelmuthAlso, I have to say, the amount of games I have installed by default is pretty ridiculous, haha. :D22:36
Spasshere, but I've seen another one too, https://www.reddit.com/r/xubuntu/comments/awfvzr/why_does_removing_mail_reader_remove_the_desktop/22:36
johanhelmuthThanks!22:37
johanhelmuthOoh! I removed mail reader as well as thunderbird last time22:37
johanhelmuthMaybe removing Thunderbird is fine, but not mail reader?22:37
SpassI'm not sure what exact package causes the issue unfortunately, but yeah, mail reader/thunderbird is the suspect here22:40
johanhelmuthI will remove and reboot one at a time, will see which one it is that messes it up22:42
Spassyou're using 18.04?22:42
brainwashmail reader is not a mail reader, but a shortcut to your preferred mail reader (provided by the essential component "exo")22:45
brainwashsame for "web browser"22:46
Spassanother report of the same issue - https://www.reddit.com/r/xubuntu/comments/b4jlwy/xubuntu_in_netbook_problems/ej7vmc3?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x22:47
brainwashI did not check the reddit posts, but it's bug 178376422:48
ubottubug 1783764 in exo (Ubuntu) "Deleting "Mail Reader" crashes the computer" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/178376422:48
Spassjohanhelmuth, so you probably was using Software (gnome-software) to remove those apps too, right?22:53
johanhelmuthYeah, I'm using "Software 3.28.1" to remove22:56
johanhelmuthWould you say that apt remove/autoremove is more reliable?22:57
brainwashthe cli way forces the user to look up information and also shows exactly what is being removed22:59
Unit193johanhelmuth: Much.23:00
johanhelmuthAlright, won't use the gui for it then, thanks!23:01
johanhelmuthSpass: So uninstalling Thunderbird went just fine now with apt autoremove, no issues at login. Not sure if that was the initial issue, but yeah.23:18
johanhelmuthThanks for the help everyone.23:18
Spassjohanhelmuth, the issue was that "Mail Reader" shouldn't be visible in the Software application, removing that removes some important packages with it23:21
SpassI can recommend you using Synaptic to manage your packages in GUI23:21
Spassit's in the repos (sudo apt install synaptic)23:22
Spassit's very reliable23:22
Spassand shows you more info23:23
johanhelmuthSounds much better, yeah23:23
SpassI use it very often to search for a specific package etc.23:23
Unit193Synaptic shows you more detail, but if you're into the whole 'snaps' thing it won't do much for you as it doesn't handle those.23:24
