slingamnwhat's the status of ubuntu firefox with respect to certmageddon? https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2019/05/04/update-regarding-add-ons-in-firefox/01:45
fik346Hello01:45
tomreynslingamn: ubuntu is affected, too.01:45
slingamnthanks. is it known whether the "studies" fix is effective for the ubuntu package? is there an ubuntu bug for shipping the hotfix as a package update?01:46

guivercfik346, this is a Ubuntu Support room; not for general Ubuntu discussion (use #ubuntu-offtopic or #ubuntu-discuss)01:49
tomreynslingamn: i would not know whether the 'studies' approach works, but i assume it will (if enabled).01:49
slingamnhttps://twitter.com/mozamo/status/1017061210112442369 just saw this tweet01:49
slingamnalthough, the version number there is 62.x, and bionic ships 66.x01:50
tomreynit will probably take some days for ubuntu to release a new firefox version, and it'll only happen if it fixes serious bugs which can't be fixed in better ways, i assume.01:50
tomreynslingamn: the tweet you linked is also from july last year01:51

tomreynfor me as well, but it's not easy to trust some storage.googleapis.com download just because its URL was posted somewhere under the mozilla.net domain02:05
slingamnit's an interesting question whether or not that's basically what the studies system is doing02:16
slingamnthe concern is that going through this flow manually is stripping off some layer of code signing02:16

guivercGerowen, possibly look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq  (section 8 or swappiness of linux kernel)02:46
Gerowenguiverc: Ok, so since it's a server install, it's probably some process that has sat idle for a long time that just got moved into the swap file.  I wasn't aware of the "swappiness" parameter, I always assumed the usage of swap was a last resort when RAM got full.  Thanks, :-)02:49

tomreynubuntu has both the in-kernel read-only ntfs driver and the userspace (read-write) ntfs-3g driver. the latter is the more complete implementation which also comes with ntfsfix, which does parts of what chkdsk does on windows. it's not feature complete, though.08:26
tomreynboth full raw storages and partitions, yes. see their user manual under advanced configurations08:27
darutokoand this will keep my drive safe then?08:28
tomreyni'm not sure what this refers to. accessing a physical storage or partition from a virtualbox VM should not corrupt the data stored on it. but you'd obviously need to ensure you don't access (mount writable) this file system from both ubuntu and the VM at the same time.08:30
tomreyndarutoko: if you're planning to migraqte from windows to ubuntu, then what's the purpose of keeping the ntfs file system?08:32
darutokotomreyn, to keep all data08:32
tomreynyou could also keep all the data o0n a.. say.. ext4 file system?08:32
tomreyn*on08:32
tomreynthat's the default file system ubuntu uses, it's fully supported by ubuntu, it supports full and extended ACLs08:33
darutokobut it NTFS and if I format it - U wll loose data08:33
darutoko*U=I08:34
tomreynwell you could either replace it, then restore your backups, or you could reduce the size of the ntfs to the smalles possible size and create an ext4 file system next to it, then gradually move the data, shrink the ntfs, and grow the ext4 file system.08:35
darutokoyea, I think I would have to do some thing like that :(08:36
darutokothank you for your help08:36
tomreynyou're welcome08:38

Samba on Linux was then reverse enginereed. and turned out to be very reliable, so they called their implementation 'Common Internet File System'. and so cifs is the successor of smbfs. please Correct me if I'm wrong.  Have a nice Weekend @all :)09:24

qwebirc31340Hi. Great that this official support channel exists. I upgraded from 14.04 LTS to 16.04 just today and now I'm stuck in a loop of lightdm. Getting into a login prompt is not that easy since ctrl-alt-f1 does not work.10:57

To fix, change to a virtual terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F3, log in with your normal username and password, run   rm ~/.Xauthority*   and then reboot.10:57

tomreynqwebirc31340: ppa's and 3rd party repositoories are unsupported in the first place, so you'll need to ensure you have a supported system state before you do the release upgrade11:32

tomreynqwebirc31340: an incompatible libstdc+ is a serious issue, which should never be allowed to be introduced by a PPA. it can break your entire system. which the apt output you had shows well.11:34
qwebirc31340tomreyn: I am note sure at this time where that libstdc++ comes from, so not yet sure.11:35
tomreynqwebirc31340: in case you will be able to somehow make your apt(-get) work again, and you insist on *not* reinstalling (which i think is not a good idea), you mwa want to use https://github.com/tomreyn/scripts#foreign_packages to identify the packages and package versions which yre getting in the way on your system.11:36
tomreynsoon: did you also have issues with the graphics drivers? is this still a thing?11:37
tomreynsoon: the other issue i noticed on your kernel log was broken ACPI DSDT tables. you could work around those.11:37
qwebirc31340tomreyn: the thing is, my system got hosed after an upgrade - not during runtime. It was working fine for 5years (that's why I selected the LTS) but not this.11:41
qwebirc31340tomreyn: anyway apt is back to life with some errors about msimatching libstdc++ stuff hehe11:41
soontomreyn: I don't know what the issue was. Perhaps I should try a new fresh install on the same PC and see whether it recurs. I have no graphics issues as far as I can tell. I don't know what ACPI DSDT tables are -- I will google that later tonight11:43

tomreynqwebirc31340: if you'll run and act on the output of https://github.com/tomreyn/scripts#foreign_packages you'll probably not get a better situation to prepare for an upgrade to 18.04.2 than you have now.12:02
qwebirc31340tomreyn: doing the autoremove as we speak12:02
tomreynof course, a fresh installation is always better.12:02

I have been using KOrganizer for over a decade but it's never been reliable. and it still isn't on Kubuntu 19.04. so I tried Mozilla Lightning, but it also doesn't have reliable reminders (and besides, it's a Mozilla product). is there any other credible calendar application I could try on KDE? ideally not GNOME, but I am getting less demanding at this point.15:49
xamithanIs the touchpad right click a physical button?  If not you can use gnome-tweaks to fix that15:50
fleabeardxamithan, I'm not real sure how to answer that. It does have a physical feedback when I click it, like it's pressing a micro-switch. But it's all part of the touchpad. It's a small HP Stream Laptop if that is of any use.15:52

ph8Hi all!19:43
jeff_jqwebirc, look in google for a terminal command to bring tty1 to screen19:44
ph8I'm trying to mount Google Drive on Ubuntu (Disco) - almost every route i find requires me to grant an app (whether it's GNOME, or ocamlfuse or expandrive) access to my account - it makes me really uncomfortable! Does anyone know a way I can mount it to a folder without having to give a cloud app wide ranging access to my personal files?19:44
ph8or have i misunderstood how much access i'm granting? is it not as bad as it sounds? (e.g. app can read my files at any time without my knowledge?)19:45
jeff_jph8 can you not mount it directly as a network folder?19:45
ph8@jeff_j For google drive? will that "just work"?19:45
ph8i assume it's not just like a samba share19:45
jeff_jtry it, omgubuntu webpage had an article about getting google drive a while ago, try searching their page19:46
qwebirc95665i used sudo chvt 1, nothing happend19:46
jeff_jalso granting google account access to ubuntu is not as bad as it sounds, a lot of people do it and it integrates really well, e.g. you can see events in the Gnome calendar etc19:46
jeff_jqwebirc, you either need to Ctr+Alt+F<?> switch or do it via the terminal19:46
ph8but surely if some kind of master ubuntu key was compromised evil hax0rs could siphon off everyones data?19:47
jeff_jph8, in that same logic, some evil master could simply hack your account directly, also to de-cipher encryption without using quantum computing would take thousands of years, I saw a video on it on youtube19:48
ph8I mean more like if Ubuntu HQ gets broken into and the key gets stolen19:48
ph8i'm right in thinking that it's just an ubuntu centralised client/secret away from having access to all the people who've granted ubuntu access to the drive right?19:48
ph8* their drive19:48
jeff_jph8 the key is not stored at their HQ and it is not something somebody can just decode19:49
jeff_jyou have a valid reason to be cautious, but I think you are safe 99.9%19:49
ph8i know it's not a matter of decryption, but somewhere the ubuntu app has a set of credentials that lets it do its job right?19:49
ph8i do feel like i'm missing something19:49
qwebirc95665jeff_j if i try it localy it seems to work with the command sudo chvt 1 to go back to this, but on the server it seems to do nothing19:49
qwebirc95665even if i do it in the gui inside the VNC19:50
qwebirc95665sudo chvt 3  => sudo chvt 119:51
jeff_jAtleast it appears that you have a GUI session running, try this loginctl show-session <enter session number from doing loginctl> -p Type19:52
qwebirc95665Type=x1119:54
jeff_jyeh you definitely have the GUI in that session, you just need to access it that is all19:54
ph8@jeff_j found it - the ocamlfuse plugin has an option that lets you setup your own api key and secret - much more palatable for my security profile: https://github.com/astrada/google-drive-ocamlfuse/wiki/Authorization19:54
jeff_jGood job ph8, I didn't even know that, thanks for the info19:54
qwebirc95665probably the session i'm currently logged in to the gnome-terminal19:55

tomreynqwebirc88348: are you saying your /boot is an NTFS?21:10
Noor_egywhen i try to install snapd it give me those line in terminal https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/cc28WN9gvG/21:11
Noor_egywhats wrong21:11
tomreynDelemas: once 66.0.4 is released by Mozilla, there will probably be a snap first of all, then a 66.0.4 release via apt in a couple days, maybe a week.21:12
tomreynthis is my personal rough guess, not a reliable prediction21:12
qwebirc88348Yes21:13
tomreynNoor_egy: whats the command you run, which ubuntu version is this? is it actually ubuntu?21:13
Noor_egysudo apt install snapd tomreyn:21:14
tomreynthanks for answering one of 3 questions so far.21:14
Delemas66.0.4 is available for download from Mozilla now.21:14
Noor_egysorru ubuntu veresion is 18.0421:15
Noor_egyand yes its ubuntu21:15
Noor_egytomreyn: sorry didnt mean to be slow in answer21:15
tomreynNoor_egy: try this:  sudo apt update && sudo apt purge man-db && sudo apt install man-db21:16
tomreynNoor_egy: discuss any error messages and warnings, or post the full output21:16
qwebirc88348Am going to extract windows 7 starter edition to a partiton that I shrank I formatted to NTFS & place Boot Flag I need to know after  done can I type a terminal command to place the NTFS Boot Partition in GRUB 221:17
Noor_egytomreyn: no error found21:18
tomreynDelemas: ah right, i missed said link. so, since you consider the workarounds (works for me!) as incomplete, your options are to use Mozillas tar.gz builds now, wait for mozilla to push the https://snapcraft.io/firefox build, or wait for an ubuntu .deb21:19
tomreynNoor_egy: so i guess you're fine then.21:19
tomreynNoor_egy: cna you test whether the "man" command still works?21:19
Noor_egyok i will remove snapd and install it again tomreyn:21:20
Noor_egytomreyn:  its working21:20
tomreynNoor_egy: i don't think you need to. the output you posted earlier really only had errors about man-db, no output about snap at all.21:21
Delemastomreyn, the reports I read about the hotfix seem to have been wrong. It's working for me at the moment.21:21
tomreynDelemas: it does for me, too.21:21
DelemasOr at least the reports don't apply to my setup...21:21
Delemastomreyn, thanks for the help.21:23
tomreynDelemas: you're welcome.21:23
qwebirc88348How to boot from other ntfs patitition using grub 221:26
OerHeksan windows 7 iso .. i am not sure it can be done with ntfs, probably fat32.. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/ISOBoot21:27
OerHeksnot really an Ubuntu issue, and i think you need to do this on a seperate drive, not the drive to install windows 7 on21:27
qwebirc88348I will try both I hope first one will work21:31
leonardusEver since upgrading from 18.10 to 19.04, I've had problems with VLC. When I double click a video in file manager, the VLC GUI doesn't open, but there's the traffic cone icon in the top-right status bar. When I click the icon and select "Quit" from the menu it doesn't go away. I have to send SIGKILL to get it to go away.21:40
leonardusIs this a known bug?21:41
asenssyhi there21:41
OerHeksleonardus, apt version or snap?21:41

leonardushttps://termbin.com/32xj OerHeks21:44
tomreynasenssy: this is a cisco question, not an ubuntu question21:44
asenssyyes it is21:44
OerHeksleonardus, via apt .. you could test the snap version, see if that is a fix21:44
tomreynasenssy: alas it is off topic here.21:45
OerHeksthey can both be installed same time21:45
OerHeksEl_Presidente, not sure, its looks like it is https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FirmwareTestSuite/Reference#S3_and_S4_Test_Specific_Options21:46

sere_where is local /bin directory located? I have /home/$USER/bin but my scripts dont run unless i point to that directory22:03
OerHeksat the root /22:04
OerHeksoh, you have a private bin folder22:05
sere_I want it for the local user not su.22:05
sere_OerHeks: i thought it was /bin in the home directory22:05
compdoctheres a few bin directories22:05
OerHeksis it in your %path% ?22:06

AppXprtOMG I had to manually purge all packages recursively to get newest amdgpu pro installed... even all the X11 stuff.. took over an hour22:37
AppXprtover 1500 packages22:38
tomreyngreat, so now is the time to reinstall.22:39
AppXprtno it worked and I'm reinstalling everything back, didn't even have to reboot22:40
AppXprtLoL chrome isn't even installed anymore, but I'm still in it because it's running in ram22:40
AppXprtX11 isn't even installed but everything still running in RAM hahahaha22:40
tomreynso you don'T actually have a support question then?22:40
AppXprtno desktop manager or even window manager22:40
AppXprtI did earlier but no one helped22:40
AppXprtamd gpu pro borked my package manager22:40
tomreynwe're all volunteers here, you know.22:41
OerHeksone would start with HWE, on 18.04, then amdgpu-pro22:41
AppXprtthis was an upgrade from AMDGPU 18 to 1922:42
tomreynand turn to amd for support with it, since it's not in ubuntu22:42
AppXprtnot a standard install22:42
OerHeksoh oke, no use for a bugreport then22:42
AppXprtman none of you all listen at all and you think you know everything, this wasn't about AMD DRIVERS!22:43
AppXprtthis was about fixing apt22:43
AppXprtI SAID BROKEN PACKAGE MANAGER22:43
AppXprtwhy does everyone here jump to major conclusions and assumptions?22:43
AppXprtyou all have some serious issues...22:43
AppXprtone mention about amd, oh this is an ubuntu support channel22:44
OerHeks...22:44
AppXprtyea and apt was completely broken, not amd drivers22:44
AppXprtyes amd drivers caused it, apt was still broken.............22:44
AppXprtI said AMD GPU pro and you jumped to, this isn't an AMD support channel... My issue wasn't even about the drivers....................22:45
tomreyndo you have a support request now, AppXprt ?22:46
AppXprtno because I fixed it myself since apparently everyone is is incompetent22:46
AppXprthere22:46
tomreyngood then please stop chatting here until you have.22:46
tomreynthis channel is really just about support.22:46
AppXprtyou need to stop trying to "Support" people, because you're absolutely horrid22:47
OerHeksthanks, bye!22:47
AppXprtHere was the original issue: https://pastebin.com/EeGv0RC822:47
AppXprtDo you see a broken package manager?22:48
AppXprtWho do I need to talk to about seeing that tomreyn doesn't jump to assumptions and conclusions about support questions?22:48
OerHeksdid you update properly, apt full-upgrade ?22:48
AppXprthow would I do that with apt being broken?22:49
AppXprtSo obviously we need real support people here who actually know what they're doing?22:51
OerHeksi think 18,04,2 is supported, not 19.,04 ?22:51
AppXprtthis is 18.04.222:51
OerHeksoke, just checking22:52
wondowshaha this is not some sort of paid customer support channel or smth22:52
EriC^^"i demand a refund! oh wait, i never.. um nevermind"22:53
tomreynTo ignore AppXprt, please use     /ignore AppXprt22:53
AppXprtthis answer is this in case this issue comes up... AMD 18 and 19 are both for Ubuntu 18.04... The AMD driver modules replace a lot of stuff including gl, x11, opencl libs... to upgrade from AMD 18.50 to 19.10 you have to purge all the 18.50 packages and library replacements, then install new22:53
OerHeksbut you *do* have HWE installed?22:54
OerHeks!hwe22:54
ubottuThe Ubuntu LTS enablement stacks provide newer kernel and X support for existing LTS releases, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack22:54
AppXprtthe problem is these libraries that are replaced are used by even more stuff, like the entire Desktop Environment and Window manager22:54
AppXprtI have mate-desktop-environment installed plus multiple packages use the libraries that AMD 18.50 replaces....22:55
AppXprtso I had to manually purge almost EVERYTHING in the system to install newer AMD 19.10 driver modules22:55
AppXprtthere has to be a better way to do this...22:56
AppXprtI still haven't rebooted to see if it works because I'm afraid22:56
AppXprtI guess I'll see, screw you all22:57
EriC^^AppXprt: you could have used dpkg --force-all -r <package> to remove the libs without apt forcing you to remove the packages that22:57
OerHekssudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-18.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-18.04 # and reboot would have done those actions too, i guess22:57
EriC^^oh gosh22:57
OerHeksbut time to reboot, i don't know22:58
EriC^^..that depended on the libs22:58

RoadRunnertomek171: OerHeks: well tried both apt and apt-get  with both update and upgrade; some packages worked others like riot didn't. Tried Software Updater after all of that and it is still talking about an internet connection problem23:42
tomek171could you show error messages thrown by apt-get update and apt-get upgrade?23:45
RoadRunnertomek171: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/gh3vjnRRCG/23:53
OerHekshttps://launchpad.net/~spring/+archive/ubuntu/ppa is old23:53
OerHeksand the key for  riot.im should be in their howto23:55
OerHeksthere seems to be packages https://packages.riot.im/debian/dists/xenial/23:56
blckhllhey guys - does anyone here creates or maintain packages for Ubuntu?23:57
tomek171RoadRunner: you can use apt-key and try again: sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv C2850B265AC085BD && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade23:58
