nikolamWhy this (retarded) File>Open dialogue in Xubuntu 18.04 LTS , when I try to open file from GIMP, does not have &^%* PATH line?09:30
bluesabreGIMP uses GTK2 and a custom file dialog.09:31
bluesabreCompletely outside of our or anybody's control.09:31
bluesabre(other than gimp devs)09:31
bluesabrehttps://www.gimp.org/bugs/report.html09:32
nikolambluesabre, thank you for the clarification!09:41
nikolamI think Xubuntu suffers from not having File path enter option in File>Open dialogue in general (like opening File>Open form mousepad) , except from pressing Ctrl+L09:44
nikolamSame way, GIM requires to press "/" for path dialogue to appear in file>open ...09:47
nikolamSeems that Location: also shows up after clicking a folder in File>Open Gimp dialogue.09:55
guiverc2nikolam, mousepad shows shortcuts in the file open dialog as setup in my thunar/mousepad/etc; have you tried using the shortcut feature?11:21
nikolamguiverc2, yes, shortcut works, Ctrl+L , just not there by default, it's either per-Xfce choice or Xubuntu choice not to display it by default.11:22

Guest52325I'm using xUbuntu 19.04 in VM VirtualBox on Win 10 64. I'm having a heck of a time adding an SD card. I have made the .vmdk file as per may instruction on the web. When I add it to the storage for the VM, Xubuntu hangs on start. When I remove the SD, it starts fine. I can also see all the drive letters in the Win 10 machine with the xUbuntu File Manager--not sure what that means.  I am looking for ideas.12:06
brainwashGuest52325: you probably should ask in the virtualbox channel12:07
Guest52325That's part of the question. Should what I am doing work as far as xUbuntu is concerned?12:09
pmjdebruijnhow and why are you adding an SD card in a VM?12:09
pmjdebruijnand what are you booting? a CD ISO? an already installed xubuntu on a virtual disk?12:10
pmjdebruijnGuest52325: please elaborate12:10
Guest52325settings>storage>IDE>HD (SD card). I am adding it so I can configure the SD card for an embedded linux controller12:11
Guest52325xUbuntu is already installed on the virtual HD. The SD card is empty (formatted EXT4)12:12
pmjdebruijnand the SD card disk is secondary?12:13
pmjdebruijnnot primary?12:13
pmjdebruijnis the SD card an actual physical SD card?12:13
pmjdebruijnnot an image file?12:13
pmjdebruijnhow exactly does xubuntu hang on start? what's the last thing you see?12:14
Guest52325I used the default, which is IDE primary master. xUbuntu is on the SATA controller.12:14
pmjdebruijnisn't vbox just trying to boot from the SD card and failing?12:15
Guest52325The SD is a physical card.12:15
pmjdebruijnat least that seems to be the obvious problem12:15
pmjdebruijnwhat's the last message you see?12:15
pmjdebruijndo you see the xubuntu boot splash at all?12:15
pmjdebruijnGuest52325: ?12:16
Guest52325The virtual window opens. I get a pop up box xUbuntu: Starting virtual machine with a progress bar 0%. It never advances. Eventually an identical pop up box opens in the VM window and sticks at 20%. Eventually it fails.12:19
pmjdebruijnuhm12:20
pmjdebruijnthen why do you say "xubuntu hangs"12:20
pmjdebruijnit sounds like virtualbox is hanging12:20
Guest52325I think the answer is I don't get the splash screen. The xUbuntu window is empty/black during this. If I remove the SD card from the storage, I get the colored splash screens.12:20
pmjdebruijnnot xubutnu12:20
pmjdebruijnisn't this a permission issue?12:21
pmjdebruijnblock device access requires root12:21
Guest52325I was thinking it was trying to boot from the SD card.12:21
pmjdebruijnand you probably and hopefully not running vbox as root12:21
pmjdebruijnGuest52325: try chaning boot order in vbox12:21
pmjdebruijnor use kvm12:22
Guest52325I am running virtualbox as admin. I also changed the permissions for the .vmdk file to all access.12:22
pmjdebruijnnot a good idea, but the problem is in the permissions for /dev/whatever12:23
pmjdebruijnnot the vmdk12:23
pmjdebruijnGuest52325: ?12:24
Guest52325You mean you think the win 10 permissions block SD access? The SD is not readable by Win 10 since it is EXT4.12:26
pmjdebruijnoh Win1012:26
pmjdebruijnno clue how that works in windows12:26
pmjdebruijnbut did changing the boot order help?12:26
Guest52325I'm a bit confused how to change the boot order, since they both look like HDs. I have put the HD first. not joy.12:27
pmjdebruijnGuest52325: https://ccm.net/faq/40841-virtualbox-how-to-change-the-boot-order-of-a-guest-os frist google hit12:28
pmjdebruijnquestion is whether that lists both harddisks seperately12:28
Guest52325it doesn't, just HD. I set the SD to IDE secondary slave. not joy there.12:30
pmjdebruijnsata is a seperate controller12:31
pmjdebruijnanyhow, seems like vbox is a rather crappy product in this regard12:31
pmjdebruijnGuest52325: should really ask on a vbox specific channel12:31
Guest52325So what you are tell me is this is a VirtualBox issue. Is that right? If I remove the SD card from the VM storage fdisk -l only reports the virtual system HD.12:32
pmjdebruijnGuest52325: if you don't see xubuntu booting, while it did at first, there really isn't any other conclusion that can be drawn12:33
pmjdebruijnbrainwash guessed as much to begin with12:34
Guest52325Thanks. pmjdebruijn I'll go there. Makes sense.12:34

xubuntu15wHow can I run a program as a service, and should this program run an mp3 audio?19:07
GridCubexubuntu15w: there are several ways and yes19:11
swizzyHi, I really like the bottom panel that xfce comes with on Debian (about the only thing I like about Debian..). I've tried for a bit to recreate it 1:1 but didn't manage to do it so far. Is there any tutorial or guide on how to set something like that up?21:50
swizzyon 18.04 LTS21:50
Unit193Add the second panel, then on each end you'll need to add seperators that auto expand (setting them transparent is best), then you'll want to add a few launchers in the middle, optionally with weather or eyes on the end. :>21:52
Unit193Of course, setting it to autohide and whatnot.  I prefer giving it a nice alpha color, so it's not got an ugly gray background.21:53
swizzyThank you! Will try to do that.21:53
swizzyis there a way to set it the same color as your task bar by default?21:53
xubuntu78whey22:04
xubuntu78wheeeelp22:08
Unit193You'll need to ask a question, detailing what issues you're facing with as much detail as possible before someone can assist.22:15
xubuntu78wmy xubuntu is frozen what can I do?22:19
xubuntu78w It has happened to me twice, I was working and I was hanged22:20
Unit193I'm afriad that's not a whole lot to go on, so all I can really say is a query as to if you've perhaps checked the logs in /var/log/syslog, or whatnot?22:26
