Jonopolyis xubuntu still one of the lighest ubuntu flavours?06:26
Jonopolylike compared to ubuntu-mate and lubuntu ?06:26
diogenes_Jonopoly, yes.06:33
JonopolyI'm using ubuntu-mate now because its quite light and my laptop is old06:39
Jonopolybut from what i've seen on /r/unixporn xfce seems to be one of the most popular06:39
diogenes_good.06:39
Jonopolyfor light and customistation06:39
Unit193Jonopoly: Xubuntu's focus isn't to be lightweight, but it tends to be less needy than KDE or GNOME at least.06:40
Jonopolyyeah, from what i remember Im sure it's pretty light out of the box06:41
Jonopolybut is very customisable06:41
knomeindeed. user-friendly too.06:42
Jonopolyoh is it?06:44
Jonopolyknome: well that's a plus - because i plan on installing it on my parents laptop and finally remove windows 7.....06:45
knomewell, at least from my opinion. and from my experience compared to some of the other even lighter alternatives06:45
JonopolyWell i just want an 'offical flavour' and user-friendly | light | customisable06:46
Unit193I like Sherbet as my official flavor06:53
=== bbb_ is now known as Guest95161
Guest95161Hello, I have come here for assistance if you can afford to help me. I'm running Xubuntu 19.04, when I edit my connection preferences for my ethernet adapter "Automatically Connect to VPN" - - it works but it stops auto-connecting my ethernet at startup. I have to manually start it through the network panel.12:37
Guest95161Then it works as expected, auto connects to the VPN with the adapter. But it's annoying having to manually activate it on start, and means I also have to manually map my network drive since it can't find it.12:38
Guest95161Trying this with startup, will brb. nmcli con up uuid <put you UUID here>12:42
xubuntu37wit's me again, well it works, but you have to put the UUID for the ethernet adapter, not the VPN12:47
xubuntu37wthis makes sense.12:47
xubuntu37wthanks, I will be on my way now. have a good weekend.12:47
jwvhI am new to Xubuntu and am having a problem updating. I get a message that says "The package system is broken". The problem is related to plymouth. I have tried the fixes in the dialog box and searched on line without success. I could sure use some help.16:05
pmjdebruijnjwvh: did you have a power outage while updating?16:06
pmjdebruijnthat kinda stuff doesn't usually "just happen"16:06
pmjdebruijnjwvh: do you have any clue, what might have caused it?16:06
jwvhThat is a possibility.16:06
jwvhNo idea. Everything seemed fine. I don't think I did anything unusual.16:07
pmjdebruijnwhat you can try is, opening a terminal emulator, and typing, 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'16:07
jwvhI will do that now. Thanks for the clue!16:07
pmjdebruijnif that doesn't fix it, please do post the output of those commands on pastebin.com16:08
jwvhI continue to get the error with Plymouth. I have seen others post output but I don't know how to do it.16:09
TJ-jwvh: start a terminal, do "sudo apt update && sudo apt-get --fix-broken install" - that may help16:11
pmjdebruijnjwvh: just copy the output to pastebin.com, and submit it, and paste the link pastebin.com gives you back here16:11
jwvhhttps://pastebin.com/fcUusyyw16:19
jwvhIs this right?16:19
pmjdebruijnjwvh: that is superstrange16:21
jwvhLeave it to me.16:22
pmjdebruijnjwvh: have you added any external repositories16:22
jwvhI do but I think I eliminated them all.16:22
pmjdebruijnyou added a repository that included plymouth?16:22
TJ-it does look like one of those packages isn't from the archive16:23
pmjdebruijnjwvh: do you recall which repository your broken plymouth package came from?16:23
TJ-libplymouth2 is not from 18.04, that'll be 16.04 I think16:24
jwvhI don't know. One repository that I added had to do with miktex. I have also installed Anaconda.16:24
pmjdebruijnanaconda?16:24
pmjdebruijnon xubuntu?16:24
TJ-ahh, before 16.04 even, so very old16:24
* pmjdebruijn is heavily confused16:24
jwvhanaconda = scientific python16:25
pmjdebruijnoooooh16:25
pmjdebruijnI thought the redhat installer :)16:25
pmjdebruijnjwvh: could you do a apt-cache show plymouth2 and pastebin that16:25
jwvhSure. Hey, thanks for all of your help!16:26
TJ-libplymouth2 latest in Ubuntu was 2013, plymouth_0.9.3-1ubuntu7.18.04.216:27
TJ-well darn, that wasn't what I just put in the clipboard!16:27
TJ-libplymouth2_0.8.8-0ubuntu8_arm64.deb  -that is better16:27
pmjdebruijnjwvh: did you attempt a major version upgrade recently?16:27
pmjdebruijnmaybe skipping a few versions?16:27
jwvhRan your command and found "Unable to locate package plymouth2"16:28
pmjdebruijnsorry16:28
jwvhNew and only install about 3 months ago on new box.16:28
pmjdebruijnapt-cache show libplymouth216:28
pmjdebruijnjwvh: that sound near impossible16:29
pmjdebruijni'm not calling you a liar btw :)16:29
pmjdebruijnbut something very strange is going on16:29
* pmjdebruijn is very curious to the apt-cache output16:30
jwvhSorry this is such a pain. The new link is https://pastebin.com/LzBYk2xT16:31
pmjdebruijnthat's package from ubuntu 14.0416:31
pmjdebruijnmost likely16:32
pmjdebruijnjwvh: you installed using a standard xubuntu-18.04 iso from the xubuntu website?16:32
pmjdebruijnthe big question is now whether we can remove the package16:32
pmjdebruijnyou can try 'sudo apt-get purge libplymouth2'16:33
pmjdebruijnbut that might not work16:33
pmjdebruijnand maybe don't force it to proceeed yet16:33
pmjdebruijnif it complains, please pastebin the output16:33
jwvhYes, online install from xbuntu site. FYI, I just saw your earlier comment. I am completely new to this and am not offended. Happy for your help.16:34
pmjdebruijncan your try the purge command16:34
pmjdebruijnbut don't let it proceed if it complains just yet16:34
pmjdebruijnif it runs automatically then it'll be fine (probably)16:34
pmjdebruijnjwvh: btw, before you do anything, it might be wise to backup any import data you have onto an usb drive or something16:35
pmjdebruijnwhile any command will not likely cause data loss16:35
pmjdebruijnwe are messing with the boot process16:35
pmjdebruijnso if things go badly, you may end up with boot problems16:35
jwvhIt complained. I am not so deep into the install that it would be terrible to install again.16:35
pmjdebruijnwhat's the output exactly16:36
pmjdebruijnplease post on pastebin again16:36
jwvhWill do16:36
jwvhhttps://pastebin.com/aWpCSAcP16:37
pmjdebruijnhmmmr16:38
pmjdebruijnjwvh: can you post 'grep -v '^#' /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*' on pastebin too16:38
TJ-the clue in the apt-cache output shows its from a PPA:  "Replaces: plymouth (<< 0.7.0+git20090207-0ubuntu0.1~ppa4)"16:38
jwvhWill try now16:39
pmjdebruijnTJ-: i'm not sure actually, if you google that string, you find a launchpad page that it may very well have been from 14.04 proper16:39
pmjdebruijnTJ-: preplaces just means the packages account for ANOTHER version from a PPA16:39
pmjdebruijnalthough it's uncommon to see this in mainline16:40
TJ-pmjdebruijn: ahh yes, it may be a hold-over from the plymouth-devs PPA16:41
pmjdebruijnright16:41
pmjdebruijnsomething like that16:41
TJ-I see that version in their PPA still16:41
pmjdebruijnlol16:41
TJ-https://launchpad.net/~plymouth-dev/+archive/ubuntu/ppa16:41
pmjdebruijnright16:41
jwvhmiktex is my Latex app. vscode installed with Anaconda https://pastebin.com/2hf9sHN916:42
TJ-presumably libplymouth2 graduated to the archive from there16:42
pmjdebruijnjwvh: that doesn't seem too strange16:43
pmjdebruijnjust curious why install miktex, ubuntu has texlive in the mainline repos FYI16:43
jwvhIn retrospect I regret miktex. Worked with it before so seemed natural.16:44
pmjdebruijnfair enough16:44
pmjdebruijnnot that there's anything particularly wrong with miktex16:44
pmjdebruijnI'd just avoid adding repos whenever reasonably possible16:44
jwvhHappy to remove it an d learn texlive.16:44
pmjdebruijnI don't see the anaconda repo16:45
jwvhLesson learened. :)16:45
pmjdebruijndo you still have a reference to it16:45
pmjdebruijnjwvh: I doubt miktex caused your particular issue though16:45
jwvhrepo.anaconda.com16:47
pmjdebruijncan you try 'apt-cache rdepends libplymouth2'16:47
jwvhReverse Depends:  That's it.16:48
pmjdebruijnhmmmr16:49
TJ-it looks like the system has partial lists, explains the 18.04.1 vs 18.04.216:50
pmjdebruijnjwvh: can you try 'sudo find /var/cache/apt -iname libplymouth2*deb'16:50
pmjdebruijnTJ-: but that doesn't explain our root problem here :)16:50
jwvhWill do.16:50
pmjdebruijnto be honest, you best recourse is probably reinstall, as that gives you a determistic result, in a determistic amount of time16:51
pmjdebruijnthe reason i'm asking things, is to figure out why16:51
pmjdebruijnso you know what went wrong16:51
TJ-it does - I've seen this several times in #ubuntu where the package lists are inconsistent, e.g. bionic-updates has been removed sources.list16:51
pmjdebruijnand thus may more easily avoid it in the future16:51
pmjdebruijnTJ-: how does that explain a 14.04 package being on there16:52
pmjdebruijnhaving a missing repo, may explain why you don't have certain things, not that you suddenly have extra things :)16:52
pmjdebruijnjwvh: does 'sudo apt-get update' run without issue?16:52
TJ-pmjdebruijn: I'm not on about that, I'm on about the others like plymouth-label16:53
pmjdebruijnoh16:53
jwvhI ran your earlier command and just got a prompt back.  the apt-get command gives the same problem.16:54
pmjdebruijnso find gives no output16:54
jwvhCorrect16:54
pmjdebruijnjwvh: sudo apt-get update also complains about consistency?16:54
jwvhYes. I can run and paste for you. Also, I don't want to waste your time. Can fresh install.16:55
TJ-As in "plymouth-label : Depends: plymouth (= 0.9.3-1ubuntu7.18.04.2) but 0.9.3-1ubuntu7.18.04.1 is to be installed" means that the current bionic-updates lists are from before 18.04.2 was released so trying to grab 18.04.1 which has long gone16:55
TJ-I'd rm the lists and re-fetch them16:56
jwvhupdate commend: https://pastebin.com/uMGAmtPz16:57
jwvhTJ: If that was directed at me, I don't know how to do what you have suggested.17:01
pmjdebruijnjwvh: it's not the error, that tell you have miktex repo is unsuitable for your system17:01
pmjdebruijndamn engrish17:01
jwvhI see. I didn't understand.17:02
pmjdebruijnthe update error tells you the miktex repository is not really suitable for your system17:03
jwvhOkay thanks. Do you have a recommendation as to what I should do?17:04
pmjdebruijnnot really to be honest17:05
jwvhThanks for the honesty. I really appreciate all of your time and your help. Like I said I only have a few things installed. I can start again.17:05
TJ-jwvh: if you want to try brute-force removal: "sudo dpkg -r libplymouth2" followed by "sudo apt update; sudo apt --fix-broken"17:13
pmjdebruijnah right17:15
pmjdebruijndamn he left17:15
TJ-never mind... amazes me how folks manage to break things so well17:15
pmjdebruijnsame here17:16
pmjdebruijnat least that guy was super cooperative :)17:16
pmjdebruijnif everybody asking for help was that friendly17:16
TJ-generally in #ubuntu I don't seem many not being friendly; some get annoyed with frustration of course but I find if the context is explained to them they appreciate the complexity of diagnosing and solving17:17
TJ-I find pastebinit is a life-saver in diagnosing issues rapidly17:18
pmjdebruijnblah | pastebinit ?17:19
pmjdebruijntee for the cloud !17:19
TJ-nah, "pastebinit <( cmd1; cmd2; cmd3; cmd4; cmd5; )"17:19
TJ-can collect everything needed in one pass17:19

* diogenes_ waves18:16
xubuntu43whow do i get vmware player18:16
xubuntu43wall i want is play yandere simulator -_-18:17
xubuntu43wbut do i install vmware player like i install virtualbox18:18
diogenes_xubuntu43w, follow this guide: https://itsfoss.com/install-vmware-player-ubuntu-1310/18:18
xubuntu43wi hope this work18:18
IoloJust a heads up: I can't say for sure, but I think that unless you're doing GPU passthrough for the VM, Yandere Simulator will perform poorly to the point of being unplayable.18:20
diogenes_i've heard vmware has an improved 3d acceleration performance but i haven't tried it myself.18:21
xubuntu43wi also have a usb is there a better way i want 7 but it ask for windows key18:22
diogenes_xubuntu43w, if you download the windows 10 iso directly from microsoft website, it should be working fine.18:22
xubuntu43wi dont know why it not18:23
xubuntu43wimma try it with the 32 bit18:25
xubuntu43wit says someting about 50% of my storage being used what should i do18:30
diogenes_xubuntu43w, what says? when says? details...18:31
xubuntu43wmore tha 50% storage is used n1.56 is used by the vb machine there might not be much memory left for host comptor18:33
xubuntu43w1.56 Gb18:33
xubuntu43wany ideas18:37
diogenes_yep you've got not that much ram apparently, but what is that program you trying to run, doesn't it work under wine? playonlinux? have you tried?18:37
xubuntu43wnope my first linux laptop18:38
diogenes_have you downloaded yourprogram.exe?18:39
xubuntu43wnope havent tried that either18:39
xubuntu43wdont know how18:39
diogenes_ok wait18:40
diogenes_xubuntu43w, yep there are chances you could run it with wine, have you downloaded  yandere simulator in your pc already?18:42
xubuntu43wno idk how to run it on wine i can re download it18:44
diogenes_xubuntu43w, ok wait let me try it first and if it runs for me then it should run for you too.18:44
diogenes_xubuntu43w, nah that's crazy, i tried to download it but it doesn't show the file size and i've got a limited bandwidth here so i stopped it at 170 MB, but you can download it and we can try how it runs on your end.18:52
diogenes_here is the link: https://dl.yanderesimulator.com/latest.zip18:52
xubuntu43whow do i download wine18:52
diogenes_first download that package then in terminal (if you want to use terminal) run: sudo apt install wine18:53
diogenes_if you don't wanna use terminal just tell me and i will provide you with a graphical way of installing it.18:54
xubuntu43w using terminal18:54
diogenes_great.18:54
xubuntu43wit says wine has no installation canidate18:55
IoloWhat does the command "lsb_release -a" output?18:57
diogenes_probably you should first run: sudo apt update18:57
diogenes_then: sudo apt upgrade18:58
diogenes_then reboot and only after all that you run: sudo apt install wine18:58
xubuntu43wreboot my whole computer ( no linux smart)18:59
diogenes_xubuntu43w, you will have to reboot it only if you see a kernel upgrade.18:59
diogenes_which will most likely happen.18:59
xubuntu43woh19:01
xubuntu43wupgrading now19:02
xubuntu43wwhat is kernal mupgrade19:05
IoloIn a technical sense, the kernel is Linux. If you see Linux on the list of programs to be upgraded, that means you have a kernel upgrade.19:06
xubuntu43woh19:07

qwebirc68086is this just an expensive lesson?19:17
diogenes_qwebirc68086, do you have  libpng12 installed?19:20
qwebirc68086@diogenes_: no, I was trying to install it for another program (packet tracer). so I did (as advised somewhere else, lol): #cp /opt/pt/lib/libQt5* /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu19:20
qwebirc68086pretty sure that's what broke it19:20
qwebirc68086now it just demands libpng12 for qbittorrent19:20
qwebirc68086can't even install libpng12 for some reason, tried the deb19:21
qwebirc68086and old repo19:21
diogenes_qwebirc68086, welcome to dependency hell.19:22
qwebirc68086diogenes_ am I screwed? I don't mind Packet tracer, can just use wine, but qb would warrant a reinstall19:22
diogenes_qwebirc68086, but can you do a: apt update apt upgrade with no errors?19:24
qwebirc68086diogenes_ 0 errors19:25
diogenes_then it's not that hopeless, try: apt autoremove19:26

diogenes_and try again.19:41
qwebirc68086no dice diogenes_19:42
qwebirc68086but thanks19:42
diogenes_qwebirc68086, i'm too tired now to dig deeper than that because it's close to midnight here, maybe someone else is willing but if i were yu, i'd have taked 15 minutes to re-install.19:43
