vp11genii: just to let you know, this weekend I added the repo you sent me, the "bleeding edge" graphic drivers17:12
vp11but unfortunately the problem persists. at a random point the amdgpu crashes and it freezes the whole interface17:13
vp11the system is still alive because sound keeps coming out (e.g. when watching a video) but you can't operate in it anymore. even the keyboard halts (no response from shortcuts and no lights when turning caps lock or num lock on/off)17:14
geniivp11: I appreciate the update, thanks17:14
vp11even if I 'chromecast' something to an external TV, when the 'error' occur the TV keeps streaming the audio but the image freezes17:15
vp11I guess I'll keep this repo, though. maybe a fix will come up someday17:16
geniivp11: If you enjoy tinkering, may want to experiment with changing the I/O kernel scheduler https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Reference/IOSchedulers17:17
geniiIt could be there is some issue with the new multiqueue scheduler17:18
vp11I use this laptop to work so I'm less inclined to start tinkering with it, in the case I do something catastrophic. Damned Lenovo sells the device saying it's compatible with Ubuntu when it really isn't :(17:19
vp11and I'm admittedly not well versed enough to tinker with I/O schedulers17:20
geniivp11: Likely Lenovo has only tested with LTS releases which were available at the time the machine was being sold17:22
genii..later LTS or interim releases may not have been fully tested17:23
vp11it says it's "certified" to run Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I'm running Xubuntu 18.04 LTS. since we've concluded it's a GPU problem then it's unlikely that going to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will fix the issue.17:24
vp11although I also admit that I didn't try it...17:24
vp11ThinkPad A485 is quite recent, I think they started selling it not even a year ago17:25
