TomyWorkvmware remote console installs fine on ubuntu 18.04 but not on kubuntu 18.04. analysis of its installer's logs shows that it's trying to run "update-desktop-database", which is part of a package called "desktop-file-utils", that seems to be installed by default on ubuntu, but not on kubuntu.09:41
TomyWorknautilus depends on it, but dolphin probably doesn't. so i guess that would be the reason why it's not on kubuntu09:43
acheronukTomyWork: also needed for appimage integration allegedly, so might be worth putting in by default09:54
BluesKajHi folks10:50

TomyWorkBluesKaj, is that a script doing that?12:15
BluesKajTomyWork, doing what?12:15
TomyWork<BluesKaj> Hi folks12:15
BluesKajnope it's just a command in the server box, /amsg Hi Folks12:16
TomyWorkamsg is frowned upon in many channels12:16
BluesKajonly one objected to it , that was #debian when I was messing with debian OS a few yrs ago12:17
BluesKajit only applies to my listed autojoin channels12:19
jubo2Had the nicest Windows 7 Professional I've ever seen. It booted with UEFI, installed Kubuntu, Kubuntu installer nuked Windows'es EFI data. There was nothing much of value there15:50
jubo2'grub-update' does not see a bootable Windows, even when windows partition is mounted15:51
jubo2I did not see any big blinking red warning "Installing this will destroy existing OS'es EFI data"15:51
pepeethis bug, or something very similar, is still present in Kubuntu 18.04:  https://www.mail-archive.com/kde-bugs-dist@kde.org/msg324874.html15:56
diogenes_jubo2, did you read documentation and guids and asking here before installation?15:56
pepeeit's easy to reproduce: keep scrolling up while selecting text, at some point konsole will crash15:57
jubo2diogenes_: No. Linux doesn't break Windows if they boot with BIOS15:57
pepeeactually, doesn't seem to be the same bug... but still15:57
diogenes_efi is a more tricky thing.15:58
pepeethe crash is in the same function, though. I can provide backtrace15:58
pepeeif anyone is interested...15:58
jubo2diogenes_: There are some threads discussing something similar. Apparently I can somehow rebuild the EFI files for Windows (though none of the cases are identical with mine)15:59
jubo2But first I need to download a Windows 7 Pro .iso15:59
jubo2that could be tricky to find. Also got a functional Windows 7, so maybe it has media generation tool like 1016:00

IrcsomeBot<bauchhaus> I also had to reinstall windows twice to get a working uefi dual boot.16:15
IrcsomeBot<bauchhaus> And on another machine a similar issue.16:15
jubo2thanks for info bauchhaus16:16
IrcsomeBot<bauchhaus> Someone helped me tirelessly on the ubuntu channel.16:18
IrcsomeBot<bauchhaus> Even though i could not save the windows, at least thanks to this user I was understanding what's going on.16:19
IrcsomeBot<bauchhaus> This booting stuff can be very opaque for a user.16:20
