FaTaL_GIs there a way to prevent this? I mean, can't apt get upgrade virtually try or at least save menu.lst grub conf etc, so if it fails, it can revert?00:00
FaTaL_Gits insane that a machine will just hose its boot partition willingly00:01
sarnoldit depends upon the error in question00:01
Bashing-omFaTaL_G: Out of disk space ? what shows ' df -h ; df -i ' ?00:07
FaTaL_GBashing-om, It has been before... more than once00:10
sarnoldFaTaL_G: this should handle keeping N kernels /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/01autoremove-kernels00:11
FaTaL_Gmore times that not, it isnt, regardless, it fails to rebuild initramfs or grub200:11
MarkB2sarnold: I think I fixed it.00:11
MarkB2brb.. afk for a few minutes.00:12
sarnoldMarkB2: oh yes? what di dyou do?00:12
FaTaL_Gits so infuriating... anything that touches the actual BOOT partition should act like flashing a bios.... and only delete or overwrite things once it knows its good00:12
MarkB2FaTaL_G: I agree.  But the idea of a "root" user having "supreme power" over an OS means it thinks root is Ghod and it will do whatever Ghod says to do.00:19
Bashing-omFaTaL_G: When unattended-upgrades is enabled - the default action is to keep the last "working" kernel.00:19
MarkB2sarnold: Installed Firefox 67.0.1 fresh.  Opened the Library and did a "Restore" from the old profile's bookmarkbackup directory.00:21
MarkB2It issued a warning something like, "Do you really want to do this?"  Left-clicked yes and it did it.00:22
MarkB2But saved passwords weren't restored.00:22
MarkB2looked on the net.00:22
MarkB2copied the key3.db and key4.db files to the new profile.00:22
MarkB2One other file needed to be copied... one moment00:23
sarnoldcookies.sqlite or places.sqlite perhaps?00:24
FaTaL_GI generally do the updates myself. They arent unattended, but some updates spam the screen a bit over the top, and I might miss the error00:24
MarkB2Am I allowed to post a URL here?00:25
FaTaL_GI dont always check to make sure it rebuilt without error... but, even if it didnt, it would only require the methods of the tools to do preparation steps first, and upon success, then make changes. Far less likely to ever have a problem00:25
FaTaL_Gits not ghods fault per-se, its the order of operations on the tools we use to update00:26
sarnoldMarkB2: sure00:26
MarkB2sarnold: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/122934600:26
sarnoldMarkB2: that's a nice page, thanks00:27
MarkB2You're welcome.  All I wanted was the last collection of saved bookmarks and the password files.00:28
MarkB2There was a note in another Mozilla support site saying that while exporting bookmarks is right there, there is no option to export the associated password file.00:29
sarnoldI've used sqlite to read through my places.sqlite before.. that's my most important file in that directory, by far00:30
sarnold(and honestly, most of the friction in me trying other browsers.. life without that thing would be really hard)00:30
solidfoxare there any issues in ubuntu 19.0400:32
MarkB2Oh yeah.  A fresh install turns on all the telemetry to Daddy.  I never thought I'd be referring to the Mozilla.org crowd as "Daddy" (like Google is Chrome's daddy)... but, darn it, I dislike having my browsing monitored.00:32
solidfoxyeah thats probably a bit of an issue00:32
solidfoxbut im more worried about like memory leaks00:33
solidfoxin gnome00:33
solidfoxMarkB2: can that be disabled or opt-out of?00:33
MarkB2solidfox: You can turn off all kinds of things in Edit-->Preferences.  But I'm still seeing error messages saying that a connection back to Daddy timed out.00:34
sarnoldsolidfox: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/privacy/firefox/00:34
MarkB2Ah yes... and 67.0.1 has happily reverted its brains to refuse to work properly with Yahoo.00:34
MarkB2"A web page is slowing down your browser.  What would you like to do?"  Options are "Stop it" and "Wait".  How about "Show URL of messed up web page" ?  Naw, that would be easy.00:35
solidfoxsarnold: ah i see00:35
Bashing-omsolidfox: See too: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DiscoDingo/ReleaseNotes >> Known issues ,00:35
solidfoxBashing-om: thanks00:36
solidfoxcan ubuntu be put onto a usb with dd?00:39
sarnoldyup00:39
SysifossHey, new question. I noticed my tty's have oddly shaped and large text. I tried dpkg-reconfigure console-setup and then logged into tty and ran setupcon but nothing changed.00:39
solidfoxok i've always used unetbootin for some reaosn00:39
TJ-jeremy31: thanks! After swapping out the wifi card for one that didn't work at all (!!) and putting it back, returned to AP and finally discovered that it was set to 802.11n mode only, setting buried 6 pages in, and off the bottom of the screen!00:41
sarnoldTJ-: behind locked doors, and a hungry leopard? :)00:42
TJ-sarnold: it did feel that way; only wasted about 4 hours trying to get the darned thing on the 'net!00:44
SysifossMaybe im in in a lower bit mode?00:45
Bashing-omSysifoss: Would help you if you told the terminal emulator that you are running in the TTY .00:53
SysifossBashing-om: How do I find that out?00:54
sarnoldTJ-: ouch :(00:55
SysifossBashing-om: I'm using standard ubuntu. Pressed ctrl+alt+f3. Anything thats been changed is accidental and likely the result of following bad forum advice and not realizing i messed up00:55
Bashing-omSysifoss: universally to see is terminal command ' echo $TERM ' .00:57
SysifossBashing-om: it said "linux"00:58
Bashing-ommessing up is the way we learn .. ubuntu: break it and you do get to keep the pieces :)00:59
Bashing-omSysifoss: Humm .. not what i expected .. As I do not run stock ubuntu I can not relate here .00:59
MarkB2It feels very strange, Bashing-om, to be considered a beta test site by Canonical.01:00
SysifossThat's what I like about open source! I have learned slowly through osmosis and messing up hard lol01:01
Bashing-omMarkB2: Someone must test :) I did at one time do a lot of testing :P01:02
MarkB2Bashing-om: Indeed.  What kind of regression testing would you do on Ubuntu?  Or any Linux for that matter?01:02
sarnoldMarkB2: http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/01:03
Bashing-omSysifoss: I do not mind poking at this - if you can live with my fumbling - still with basb as your default shell ? ` echo $SHELL ` .01:04
sarnoldMarkB2: https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-security/qa-regression-testing/+git/qa-regression-testing/+ref/master01:04
Bashing-omMarkB2: Install bleeding edge something .. and get it to work ,, and/or holler for help when it breaks :)01:04
SysifossBashing-om: I dont mind fumbling. Whenever I'm helping friends convert to linux I fumble alot but I learn a ton trying to solve problems.01:05
SysifossBashing-om: yeah it says /bin/bash01:05
SysifossBashing-om: it takes fubling to figure anything out with systems as complex as these dang computers nowadays01:06
Bashing-omSysifoss: Thing is - I do not run standard; so I can not verify what is defaults in a standard install.01:10
SysifossBashing-om: ah, gotcha. Ive been trying to google that and it's been surprisingly hard01:11
Bashing-omSysifoss: Let's see what ' sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup ' will do for you. It would guide you through the steps to choose a font and font-size.01:17
Bashing-om the new settings will be effective after reboot.01:17
TJ-oh, I've just killed a new install in the most spectacular way01:37
Bashing-omTJ-: But no magic smoke ?01:39
TJ-that too! tiredness kills... disks01:40
Bashing-omTJ-: Ouch ! Such fun recovering data :(01:40
TJ-disk had Windows on with 1=recovery,2=windows,5=data partitions. I used gparted earlier to remove 5 to make space above 2 for Linux... then like a berk went and installed Ubuntu into 2, wiping out Windows! So I thought I'll remove 1 (Recovery) since I found that was broken anyhow, put a Linux part in its place and copy the Linux in 2 down into it. 2 has LVM so easy, I make a snapshot of 2's rootfs LV and copy01:43
TJ-it down into the new partition. HOWEVER I used sgdisk to --sort the partition numbers so the running 2 isn't the same as 2 on the disk until a reboot, and did "dd if=/dev/mapper/VG-snapshot_root /dev/sda2" ... and overwrote the running Linux!!!01:43
* TJ- starts a fresh install with a strong mug of coffee01:44
Bashing-omCoffee and smarts cures all ubuntu ails :D01:48
solidfoxhello, i am wondering why some people say w3m doesn't show images in gnome-terminal, and some say it does.02:22
solidfoxit does not for me02:22
sarnoldsolidfox: install w3m-img and try again02:23
solidfoxsarnold: yes i have w3m-img and it works in xterm02:23

TJ-BenderRodriguez: determine what the NIC is and if it needs firmware support02:59
BenderRodriguezTJ-: the NIC itself is detected02:59
BenderRodriguezthe ports show up in the interface list02:59
BenderRodriguezthe problem is a connected link doesn't show as up02:59
BenderRodriguezand DHCP negotiation also fail02:59
BenderRodriguezalright, you know what, why am I bothering with this02:59
BenderRodriguezI'll try CentOS02:59
TJ-BenderRodriguez: link state could be due to a firmware issue, or possibly a power-save feature, what type of NIC is it? what does lspci report?03:01
TJ-BenderRodriguez: I found the ID of that device appears to be 14e4:163a, in which case the driver is 'bnx2' and that lists several possible firmwares required. "modinfo -F firmware bnx2" lists them. They should be under /lib/firmware/03:06
h3rb_Hello03:06
h3rb_  I'm currently trying to install ubuntu along side windows 10. I wanted to encrypt my ubuntu os in the partition screen. Can some one please help me with this03:08
h3rb_I selected something else option.03:08
h3rb_Im stuck on this screen03:08
TJ-h3rb_: you're in luck! I just finished writing a guide for that... take a look see if it helps you.  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Full_Disk_Encryption_Howto_201903:09
TJ-h3rb_: be aware though, my guide is written for the scenario of using the entire disk (erasing whatever is on there) so you'll have to modify the steps to your scenario, but it is entirely do-able03:10
h3rb_Ok Im trying to install along side win 1003:10
h3rb_I have already set aside 100gb for this03:11
h3rb_I clicked on something else option and on that partition screen03:11
h3rb_I have legacy boot03:11
h3rb_Nice article but why does encryption have to be soo complicated03:12
TJ-h3rb_: as I said, see my guide, it deals with how to prepare for that. You've got to go through pre-install preparation before starting the installer03:13
h3rb_I'm not an expert with linux but I know my way around.03:13
TJ-h3rb_: it's not complicated, it's just different. The installer can do it for an empty disk but due to some subtle interactions it doesn't attempt it if there's another OS on the target device03:14
h3rb_I have os installed on my target drive.03:15
h3rb_Its a very well written article TJ but this is just too much to do. How about I create partitions from the "something else" partition screen03:16
h3rb_Will that work?03:17
h3rb_There is a use as option, in that there is use as encrypted volume03:18
h3rb_Do I have to manually create swap, / and /boot encrypted?03:19
h3rb_From gui partition screen03:19
TJ-h3rb_: no, it won't03:20
h3rb_:( why not?03:20
TJ-h3rb_: as I said, you've got to pre-prepare the encrypted devices before entering the installer03:20
h3rb_Ok cool TJ but everything on the article is for uefi03:21
h3rb_And for single boot03:21
h3rb_I have multi boot03:21
TJ-h3rb_: no, it isn't, the article was written using a BIOS install03:21
TJ-h3rb_: but I made it so it will work for either BIOS or UEFI03:22
h3rb_Ok awesome let me try it out03:22
TJ-h3rb_: as long as you don't sgdisk --zap-all and wipe out your existing OS you can follow those instructions to create the partitions you DO want rather than the ones I detail03:23
h3rb_So If I follow these steps I ll lose my win10 ?03:23
TJ-h3rb_: once you've got your partition(s) created, and LUKS them, and open them, you can add LVM or not (I always recommend it) and once you've followed those steps the installer will pick up the /device/mapper/XXXX devices you have to install into03:24
TJ-h3rb_: If you follow them religiously without thinking - I spell it out there: "First we'll wipe out the existing partitioning metadata from the device DO NOT DO THIS if you are installing alongside existing partitions!"03:24
h3rb_Ok cool Thanks TJ really appreciate it!03:25
TJ-h3rb_: I kept it to a single scenario because trying to deal with others would just confuse people as to which instructions applied to them03:27
TJ-h3rb_: it's my intention to delveop other similar tutorials in the future for other scenarios03:28
h3rb_Thanks man this was really helpful03:28
h3rb_TJ is I dont have libreboot doing all this is pointless correct?03:34
h3rb_Hackers can still access my encrypted drive if they wanted to right?03:34
h3rb_I just got to know about this from the trisquel irc chat room03:35
TJ-h3rb_: are you encrypting /boot/ where the kernel and initrd are stored, as in my guide/03:40
h3rb_Yes03:40
TJ-h3rb_: you have to trust at some point; the libreboot point is talking about the PC's firmware being malicious. If that is in your threat model you wouldn't use an IBM PC compatible, you'd use something else possibly based on an ARM SoC or MIPS or PowerPC03:41
h3rb_Like Raspberry pi?03:43
TJ-h3rb_: yes that is one example :)03:43
TJ-for most people the threat is theft of, or interference with, a PC, so LUKS encryption protects it whilst it is powered off. If you need to protect files whilst it is running you need file-system level encryption such as ecryptfs or encfs03:45

ldz27hi, i had two gcc compilers (7 and 4.8.5). I installed 4.8.4 from source and changed the symlink. after changing the symlink back to gcc 7 the gcc version is still 4.8.4. please see https://pastebin.com/4FFH33H4 how to change back to gcc7?10:36
blackflowldz27: installed how and where?10:41
ldz27blackflow: through gcc sources with ./configure and make10:43
blackflowldz27: under which prefix? where in the filesystem did you install it? As root under /usr/bin?10:43
ldz27blackflow: sorry, I am no sture. my knowledge about gcc is low. my goal was to get a specific version. I would say inside /usr/local/bin. I set the symlinc to /usr/local/bin/x86_64...gcc-4.8.4. please see https://pastebin.com/3K87ET3310:49
ldz27*not sure10:49
ldz27I din't set the prefix explicitly10:51
blackflowldz27: well then you possibly broke your system. if it installed anything to a location outside of /usr/local/ you'll need to figure out what, and how to restore from packages. meanwhile, the symlink from /usr/bin/gcc should be to gcc-7 (in the same dir), on Ubuntu Bionic, I'm not sure at the moment what other versions are currently actively supported.10:53
blackflowand then check what gcc --version says, along with `which gcc` to see which one in the PATH is being used. The supported, packaged, gcc on Ubuntu is /usr/bin/gcc as symlink to specific packaged version10:54
ldz27blackflow: not sure I can follow you. the symlinc is set to gcc-7 but gcc -v shows the 4.8.4. Could you judge how broken the system is? I mean could be enoguht to reinstall the compilers with apt-get?10:58
blackflowldz27: `which gcc`10:59
ldz27blackflow: ?11:01
ldz27the default one11:01
blackflowldz27: that's the command you should run. `which gcc`. it shows the effect gcc according to precedences in $PATH11:01
ldz27blackflow: /usr/local/bin/gcc11:02
ldz27is there a easy way to swich to /usr/bin/gcc :)?11:04
blackflowldz27: right. /usr/local/bin takes precedence in default $PATH on ubuntu. you should remove the gcc installed there. I don't remember the gcc Makefile targets OTOH. Either there's a `make uninstall` target, or you'll have to remove files manually.11:04
blackflowldz27: of course you can always use the full path to /usr/bin/gcc but that's not gonna help with scripts and Makefiles that don't do that11:43

ioriaSysifoss, 1) those files will be resetted the next gnome-shell upgrade 2) could make your Desktop session not starting at all12:52

Mr_Cyclopssolidfox, I have been a LUKS user myself, but on regular SATA Drives. FSTRIM is what clears unused blocks on the SSDs so that it doesn't slow down trying to find new blocks for storage19:05
solidfoxthat shouldnt be a problem19:06
solidfoxdid you notice a performance cost?19:06
Mr_Cyclopsnope, but it's not about performance only. I am looking for cross-platform options too. So that my wife can used the drive on her Windows laptop as well, LUKS is only Linux19:07
Mr_Cyclopsso many reasons why I am looking for alternatives19:07

OerHeksthat would be logical, mounted on /media/20:24

semchapeuI have two linux machines each with a directory with mostly the same content. However both have some files that the other does not. I want to copy the missing files from each machine to the other over the network, what would be a simple way to do this?21:10
OerHekssemchapeu, rsync, and grsync as a gui perhaps21:10
OerHeks!info rsync21:11
ubottursync (source: rsync): fast, versatile, remote (and local) file-copying tool. In component main, is standard. Version 3.1.2-2.1ubuntu1 (bionic), package size 340 kB, installed size 756 kB21:11
de-factorsync + ssh is really awesome for such tasks21:12
semchapeuthanks OerHeks, de-facto21:13
=== thewaspsknees1 is now known as thewaspsknees
de-factosemchapeu, make sure to read the manual and try with --dry-run first :)21:18
lbracherGallomimia, I just fixed that problem on directory mount. I discovered a OS directory in /media/user, deleted it and rebooted. Everything is on place now.21:24
semchapeude-facto: so how do I know my dry run would have done what I wanted?21:29
de-factoit should print out what it would do21:30
de-factoif you dont suppress logging of course21:30
semchapeuit does, it lists all the files it would copy I guess21:30
semchapeuit's a bit more than I thought21:31
semchapeubut I guess it looks correct21:31
de-factothats why I suggested  --dry-run first, so you dont mess up with one-shot :) make sure its sane...21:32
de-factothe manpage has a lot of tweaking options to help with deciding which files should be synced21:33
semchapeuI used grsync to "generate" the command for me, however grsync doesn't ask me for my ssh creds so I took the command to run it in the terminal, so I think all the flags should be correct21:35
curlyearsj21:38
curlyearshas nayone inn here heard of or seen anything on "Xtra-PC?"21:38
de-factowell i guess so, just make sure it really will do what you intend with --dry-run :)21:38
semchapeude-facto: thanks again21:56
