jak0723hey, I just installed a Xubuntu 18.04 VM via VirtualBox. I'm tweaking the xfce settings and I can't figure out how to change the width of the window buttons. I've tried out some suggested solutions that edit the '.gtkrc' file, but it isn't working for me08:12
jak0723this is what I mean by window buttons, I want them to be wider so that they aren't cut off with ellipses, or that I can at least see more of the title https://puu.sh/DQyaU/3c546fb282.png08:12
diogenes_jak0723, decrease font size.08:14
jak0723I have a 4k monitor, I'd prefer the font to stay at that size08:14
diogenes_jak0723, then most likely you need to wait a bit for the official 4.14 which promises a better scaling capability.08:17
jak0723the suggested solutions I mentioned involve modifying the "XfceTasklist-max-button-length" setting in order to achieve what I want08:17
jak0723I just don't know how to change that setting, using a '.gtkrc' file doesn't seem to work for me08:19
diogenes_did you re-log after applying that change?08:20
jak0723you mean reboot the system?08:22
jak0723yeah I did that08:22
jak0723btw this is one of those solutions that I found https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=1266408:22
diogenes_jak0723, another try is to create a test panel and set it as Deskbar and add the window buttons to that panel the play with Row size, Number of rows and Length settings.08:25
diogenes_then*08:25
jak0723deskbar? Like this? https://puu.sh/DQyul/467c7e74e0.png08:29
diogenes_jak0723, yes, now go to that panel settings and increase the row size, length and so on08:30
diogenes_and see if it stretches the way you need.08:30
jak0723this is it at max row size https://puu.sh/DQyw6/dd28ce4201.png08:31
jak0723with deskbar it makes it wider, with horizontal, it's thicker08:31
jak0723it doesn't directly affect the width of the window buttons08:32
diogenes_now length and nr of rows08:32
diogenes_set maximum08:32
jak0723ok, increasing the row size and the number of rows seems to work, but I'd rather it be horizontal instead of deskbar https://puu.sh/DQyzc/29734fa8ff.png08:34
jak0723also the height of the window buttons is too small with that, the text is cut off, as can be seen with the bottom of the 'j'08:35
jak0723it's supposed to be 'jak', not 'iak'08:36
diogenes_jak0723, what i mean is that you can have 2 panels, one hor one ver and limit that ver deskbar only as to show you the window buttons also set it to autohide and that's how you have everything you need and nothing gets in the way.08:36
jak0723I don't want that, I want the window buttons in the vertical panel that I already have to be wider08:37
brainwashjak0723: https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/tasklist#style_properties08:37
jak0723I tried that08:37
brainwashthe file name is .gtkrc-2.008:37
jak0723I tried that too08:37
jak0723https://puu.sh/DQyCC/66c28c40de.png08:38
brainwashdoes changing any of the other properties work?08:38
jak0723what other properties?08:38
jak0723like modifying the font in the gtkrc-2.0 file?08:39
jak0723I tried that it didn't work either08:39
jak0723brb dinner08:39
brainwashlike XfceTasklist::minimized-icon-lucency08:39
jak0723huh, changing that does effect it08:47
jak0723then why can't I change the window button width?08:47
jak0723oh, looks like I had to increase the value much more than 200 to make a difference08:51
brainwashaha08:51
jak0723thanks for the help, I'm not sure how long it would have taken for me to figure it out on my own if you didn't suggest changing minimized-icon-lucency08:53
jak0723it's weird, that 'menu-max-width-chars' setting doesn't seem to do anything08:55
brainwashglad that it's working now08:55
brainwashI can't test right now if menu-max-width-chars works or not08:58
brainwashhow do you test it?08:58
jak0723change the  value, save and hit `xfce4-panel -r`08:59
brainwashbut what is the use case?08:59
brainwashit should affect the menu list for grouped windows I think09:00
jak0723oh you're right, it does affect that09:01
jak0723I thought it was for the window button title09:01
ssarahhei guys, i changed my password with passwd but now the keystore thing is asking me for my old password on every boot11:09
ssarahhow to i change its password?11:10
diogenes_ssarah, what keystore?11:12
ssarahthat thing that stores your keys?11:40
ssarahI don't remember the name proper...11:41
ssarahshould i reboot?11:41
=== balkamos_ is now known as balkamos
diogenes_ssarah, it's called keyring, seahorse, open it from the menu and change your password to blank one and it will not ask you to unlock.12:03
ssarahdonthave it on the menu12:05
ssarahon bash i can see a keyring and a keytool12:05
diogenes_ssarah, sudo apt install seahorse12:22
jak0723hey, is there a way to make it so that long filenames are truncated so that icon spacing is consistent? If a filename is too long, the spacing gets weird https://puu.sh/DQCQm/df48412475.png13:43
jak0723apparently a person fixed their issue by applying a patch, but I don't know how to do that https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=1148613:45
brainwashjak0723: that would require you to read a guide or tutorial about building packages13:55
brainwashalternatively, you could install thunar 1.8 from the xubuntu PPA13:58
jak0723does thunar 1.8 fix the icon spacing issue?13:59
brainwashI guess I read the bug report not properly14:01
brainwash1.8 behaves the same :/14:01
jak0723oh, is there another xfce file manager that I could use that doesn't have that issue?14:03
brainwashnot Xfce, but there are Nautilus (GNOME), Nemo (Cinnamon) and Caja (MATE)14:04
brainwashI don't know how those behave though14:04
jak0723ok, guess I'll give nautilus a go14:05
brainwashprobably best to install it with --no-install-recommends14:06
brainwashsudo apt install --no-install-recommends nautilus14:06
brainwashotherwise it may pull in extra stuff14:07
hexacodehello all14:10
hexacodei want to use wall command in local14:10
hexacodebut it's not working ?14:11
gnrphexacode: What do you mean "in local"?15:00
hexacodegnrp, on my machine not a server15:02
hexacodei open 2 terminal15:02
hexacodei write wall "test"15:02
hexacodebut nothing happens15:03
hexacodeok i find because gnome terminal is a shit15:09
gnrphexacode: Did you activate writing messages by using `mesg`?15:16
gnrpah, ok15:16
hobs0nwhy hallo thare! howsit going these wonderful evening?15:48
diogenes_lovely, wbu?15:49
hobs0nim fine :)  Im quite a linux newbie. Ive been trying various distros and finally settled on Xubuntu on this old slow laptop :)15:50
diogenes_excellent choice.15:50
hobs0nI was messing around with the keyboard shortcuts, felt the need to reset the kb shortcuts. But that didnt reset to the default kb shrotcuts in xfce, it reset to very few, non-working kbshortcuts... :/15:52
hobs0nI searched arund for a while now and havent found any good info on this. I wish to get the defaulty xfce xubuntu keyboard shortcuts back15:53
diogenes_you can always rename .config/xfce4 folder and reboot.15:54
hobs0nuhm ok15:55
knome~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts.xml15:56
hobs0nok, cya soon then :)15:57
hobs0nblark,16:05
hobs0ni ran rm -r ~/.config/xfce4 and rebooted, the nonworking non-default "default" kb shrtcuts are stil therel16:09
diogenes_maybe you have restore old session enabled.16:11
hobs0nwhen I checked /settings/Session and Startup  , none of the save session options were checked16:14
hobs0nwhen I goto ./.config/xfce4 i only have two dirs, panel and xfwm416:15
diogenes_look in settings editor > xfce4 session > saveonexit16:16
hobs0nHM OK16:16
hobs0nsry16:16
hobs0nah, itwas indeed checked there16:18
hobs0nis it enough to logout or do I have to reboot?16:18
diogenes_now clean saved sessions16:18
diogenes_then logout16:19
hobs0nok16:20
xubuntu70wHey guys I'm having a problem with my cdrom playing16:24
knomepress the stop button? ;)16:24
xubuntu70wthe weird thing is that my dvd is recognized by the system16:24
knome(more seriously, please explain the issue in detail)16:24
xubuntu70wlol16:24
knomedvd or cd?16:25
xubuntu70wcd16:25
knomeif it's a dvd, is it a commercial movie?16:25
xubuntu70wits a cd16:25
knomeit's been quite some time since i inserted any optical media in a drive...16:25
xubuntu70wthe output of hwinfo --cdrom tells me the system can see the drive but whenever I try to mount it I just get a "no medium found"16:26
knomeaudio cd?16:26
xubuntu70wyep16:26
knomeiirc, you don't really "mount" audio cd's16:27
knomeare you looking to simply listen to the cd or rip it?16:27
xubuntu70wboth16:27
xubuntu70wone thing I noticed was my cdrom wasn't in my fstab, could that be the problem?16:27
knomehave you tried opening it in parole?16:27
diogenes_xubuntu70w, try a different cd, dvd to make sure it's not cd damaged or laser.16:28
xubuntu70wI've tried two cds16:28
knomefstab is for static file systems, not external media16:28
xubuntu70wgotcha16:29
knomethen i remember having this issue where my cdrom device was /dev/sr0, but all software looked for /dev/cdrom, so i symlinked the latter to the former...16:29
knomebut i'd really just try opening the cd in parole first and see if it plays :)16:29
xubuntu70wwhere would I access it16:30
hobs0nit didnt work :/ How do total cleanup of xfce? uninstall all xfce stuff from synaptic ?16:30
xubuntu70wI can't see my cd, that's the main problem I'm having16:30
knomeas i said, it's been a long time since i've played with optical media – i don't even have an optical drive in my pc; i'll have to refer to somebody else to help you16:31
knomehobs0n, are you looking for the xfce or the xubuntu defaults?16:31
knomehobs0n, xubuntu comes with only a few default shortcuts16:32
diogenes_xubuntu70w, look in gnome-disk-utility, maybe it's there.16:32
=== xubuntu70w is now known as FMC
diogenes_hobs0n, also you can try with a new user tat's guaranteed you get the new clean dfault session.16:32
diogenes_that*16:32
hobs0nknome: uhm then im looking for the xfce default s16:34
hobs0ndiogenes_: hm that might be an idea but id like to try learning how da effing hell this works first :)  but thanks16:35
knomehobs0n, please remember this is a family-friendly channel...16:37
hobs0nhow about trying sudo apt-get purge xfce4?16:37
hobs0nknome: ah sorry for that, Ill not do it again!16:37
knomehobs0n, what about /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts.xml ?16:38
knomecopy that over to your ~ and you should get the xfce defaults16:38
hobs0nok, ill try that :)16:39
=== xubuntu34w is now known as FMC
FMCit's the guy with the cd problem again17:04
hobs0nyay, finally solved it :)  just ran sudo apt purge xf* and cleansed it and ren sudo apt install xfce . so now it works as i wanted :)17:46
hobs0nthanks for all the help17:46

friendlyGoatits spice-vdagent and it keeps having an error whenever i boot up which annoys me18:34
friendlyGoatisnt it only for if im in a virtual machine? my os is actually installed.18:36
xubuntu27wHi, I'm trying to do an automated install of 18.04 LTS with Packer. Does anyone know of a keystroke sequence that would allow the installer to get the the Advances options to edit the boot command? This doesn't seem to be available in 18.04...19:23
