=== brainwash_ is now known as brainwash [19:21] I am trying to install Xubuntu but when I reach the "Installation type" in the install wizard its like it automatically takes me to the "something else" menu. I'm okay with that (although I wish it would provide the erase and install option) except the menu won't show any partitions on my hard drive, even though windows shows the partitions in "Dis [19:21] k Management." I would appreciate any help I can get! [19:24] trewel, hdd or ssd? [19:24] HDD 1TB [19:25] trewel, so now you hace a working windows system on it? [19:25] have* [19:25] Yes, I have windows 10 but want to replace it with ubuntu [19:26] how do I change my default keyring? [19:27] is it safe to use the same key you use as admin password? [19:27] trewel, if you want to erase it then choose create new partition table and pick gpt if uefi and mbr if bios legacy. [19:28] usney, generally safe but if you wanna change it then install seahorse, that's the frontend for keyring. [19:29] Do I have to create the new partition table from Xubuntu on my USB? [19:30] trewel, yes when you chose "something else" then there you choose your hdd and create new partition table. [19:30] are you diogenes_ the cynic or diogenes from oedoanda? [19:31] usney, and living in a barrel :D [19:31] btw from Sinope. [19:32] I suppose the later then [19:33] I can't click the "New Partition Table" button. The menu doesn't register any partitions of my hard drive. [19:34] trewel, couled you make a screenshot? [19:34] I could try [19:35] ok would be helpful. [19:36] diogenes_, seahorse only lets me change the password successful but it doesn't do anything if I try to unlock it [19:36] what am I doing wrong? [19:37] usney, did you right click on login > unlock? [19:37] yes [19:38] and what happened? [19:38] then no dialog comes up [19:39] how do I do the keyring via gnupg? Surely that has to work? [19:39] usney, that's weird, maybe you need to re-log. [19:39] okay I'll be back [19:41] diogenes_, how do insert a picture on this platform [19:41] trewel, upload it to imgur.com and share the link. [19:44] https://imgur.com/jEZ8oEo; /dev/sda is the only option in the menu, so I assume that is my drive. [19:46] trewel, and do you see any other options if you click on /dev/sda [19:46] No, that is the only one. [19:47] ok close this installer, open the menu and type in: gparted [19:49] Gparted is showing my computer's hard drive (plus its partitions) and the USB I am booting from [19:50] trewel, ok the opeations we gonna do now will erase it completely, are you sure you don't need any data from it? [19:50] The Windows OS? No. [19:51] windows os and any pics, music, videos will be gone. [19:51] I know, I don't have anything whatsoever on the computer [19:52] I actually want to get rid of Windows [19:53] ok then in the upper right corner pick you hdd (make sure it's hdd and not your usb) then go to Device > create partition table [19:53] There [19:53] and again, if uefi = gpt, if bios legacy then = master boot record [19:53] how do I know if I have uefi or bios [19:54] it is an hp computer by the way [19:54] that's the thing you need to bios for or make a screenshot of the partitions and share here. [19:57] https://imgur.com/Lj2ktfX [20:00] yeah looks like it has not efi partition then choose mastr boot record [20:00] master* [20:00] which is also sometimes called msdos and mbr [20:01] Ok [20:02] whoops! i just applied msdos. hope there wasn't anything else I was supposed to do! [20:03] yes it's good, now create a primary partition, 40 Gb size, fily system: ext4, mount point: / [20:03] the entire drive is unallocated [20:03] i know, just click on that unallocated and + symbol [20:05] Will it automatically mount to root? I don't see anywhere to select /. [20:06] screenshot. [20:06] or wait [20:06] i might be called / or root [20:06] hi [20:06] diogenes_ that worked logging back in [20:06] hi [20:06] usney, glad it worked. [20:08] Here's the link: https://imgur.com/NuPuTwY [20:08] trewel, ok it's good like that, we will assign them in the installer, just hit ok and apply. [20:09] what's the difference between lxde and xfce? [20:09] Done [20:10] diogenes_ which backup software do you use? [20:10] trewel, now create a second partition, size = all remaining minus 5GB, filesystem: ext4 [20:10] I use luckybackup [20:11] usney, i usually have several drives with copies of my data, so no backup tool. [20:12] make the second partition primary also [20:12] ? [20:13] doesn't matter, primary or logical, but yeah i always pick primary. [20:13] I applied the operation [20:14] after that create the last one with remaining 5Gb, file system: swap (linuxswap) [20:14] apply changes, close gparted and open the installer again. [20:15] I think I will have to make it swap in the installer [20:15] ok [20:18] It still looks like this https://imgur.com/jEZ8oEo [20:19] that's the weird thing i haven't seen so far, what happens if you click on +? [20:21] this happens https://imgur.com/Sa10Mab [20:22] By the way, this happened with xubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver also [20:22] trewel, ok, go to bios and change the SATA mode, if it's IDE change to AHCI and vice versa and try again. [20:22] don't forget to save changes. [20:24] it is currently on RAID [20:24] oh that's probably why, change it. [20:25] to AHCI? [20:25] yes [20:25] and delete the raid. [20:25] how? [20:26] ok if there is no option, just pick AHCI, save and reboot. [20:28] Nothing has changed in the installer, should I switch to IDE? [20:29] yeah try IDE. [20:30] if that doesn't work then restore bios defaults. [20:30] k [20:34] trewel: maybe Windows 10 blocked your disk somehow? is it hibernated maybe? just a wild guess [20:35] trying bios defaults, IDE didn't work [20:35] how would i "unhibernate" it? [20:36] boot into it, shut it down [20:36] Spass[m], but the partitions were already formatted with ext4. [20:37] hiberfil.sys is long gone. [20:37] ah, missed that, right [20:38] well, I would look into some bios options, like disabling fast boot if possible etc. [20:38] trewel, if bios defaults don't work then with gparted create a new partition table and leave it unallocated and try again witht he installer. [20:38] with* [20:39] I did that in Windows using the Disk Manager, it didn't work [20:40] Unfortunately, defaults didn't work [20:40] trewel, if none of the above work, then it's some bug in ubiquity, try to get on the insternet and from terminal do: sudo -S apt install calamares [20:40] and run calamares installer. [20:41] heading to the installer [20:41] I mean terminal [20:44] should I click the "Install System" app or the "Run calamares" app? [20:45] yes [20:45] install system [20:47] it doesn't bring anything up when i click it [20:47] ok then from terminal run: calamares [20:48] just type calameres? [20:48] firs type in: cala and double hit tab [20:48] and see what you get [20:49] I get: calamares [20:49] ok not hit enter [20:50] the last line says "Calamares is already running, shutting down [20:51] ok in terminal run: calamares --help and hit enter [20:51] see what options you have there. [20:51] if there is something like --install then run: calamares --install [20:53] there is only --help, --version, --debug, , --config , --xdg-config [20:54] see what you get with: calamares --xdg-config [20:57] the first line says " KDSingleApplicationGuard: Could neither create nor attach to shared memory segment." it is the same message I got when I ran just "calamares" [20:58] maybe you missing some packages, run: apt search calamares [20:58] get the list of packages and see which one have the [installed] tag [21:02] Hello guys!My Xubuntu installation is catching in normal use. What can it be ?How do I find out the cause of this problem? [21:05] jorgersm, what do you mean catching? [21:05] Sorry I took a while. there are 6 files, 2 have the installed tag [21:06] One of the 2 has [installed, automatic] [21:07] trewel, ok then run: killall calamares, then sudo -S apt purge calamares and then this: sudo -S add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-calamares/testingthen sudo apt update then sudo apt install calamares-settings-ubuntu [21:08] is "then" part of the command [21:08] no, just fast typing [21:08] diogenes_ the system stop and the screen stop also. Mouse and keyboard don't respond. I just reboot the power button to get it out of this situation. [21:09] jorgersm, and has it always been like this since the first time you installed the system? [21:14] Yes. I installed it today. The computer was stopped a while ago. I wiped it lightly and he turned it back on. I installed the system and it started to present this problem. [21:15] jorgersm, pastebin the output of: inxi -F [21:15] ok [21:16] diogenes_, i got "E: unable to locate package calamares-settings-ubuntu" after i ran sudo apt install calamares-settings-ubuntu [21:18] trewel, then try with synaptic: sudo -S synaptic [21:18] and there search calamares and it will show you all the relevant packages to install. [21:18] just run the line " sudo -S synaptic?" [21:18] yes [21:19] I got "sudo: synaptic: command not found" [21:19] sudo -S install synaptic [21:22] "install: missing destination file operand after 'synaptic'" [21:22] "Try 'install --help' for more information" [21:23] oh sorry, i'm getting sleepy, it's: sudo -S apt install synaptic [21:24] done [21:34] diogenes_, I have synaptic package manager open [21:34] trewel, search for calamares [21:35] and install it and all the relevand packages [21:35] relevant* [21:38] done [21:40] diogenes_, only calamares-settings-lubuntu wouldn't install (I think the warning said it would overwrite another file) [21:43] ok now run calamares again in erminal and if it doesn't start then install calamares-settings-lubuntu and let it overwrite. [21:53] digenes_, in the details the notifications says the file failed to install. [21:54] I don't think its an overwrite issue after all [21:56] trewel, ok then at this point i'm too tired to continue but before i go, i have the following things you can try: [21:56] 1) in terminal run: sudo -S ubiquity and when you reach partitioning, look in the terminal and notice any errors warnings that will give you a hint of what could go wrong. [21:56] diogenes_, thanks a lot for you time, i'll probably just try Ubuntu or something. [21:57] 2) download mx-linux which should install fine becaise it uses gparted for partitioning and with gparted you have no problems. [21:57] if mx linux installs fine then you can try again the xubuntu installer. [21:58] 3) put your hdd into another computer of even a hdd enclosure and see if you can install on it that way, if you are successful then install and then place it back in. [21:59] these are the things i can think of right now, tomorrow you may come with a feedback on how it went. [21:59] Thanks for the suggestions! [21:59] and of course maybe someone here has other ideas and will step in to helpt you further on. [21:59] goodnight and good luck! [21:59] thanks
