wylelSo if I wanted to move from Pop!_OS to Kubuntu without losing any data and nuke and paving, how easy would that be?04:08
valorieit's based on ubuntu, so I think you could just sudo apt install kubuntu-desktop04:18
valorieyou wouldn't  be exactly running kubuntu04:18
valoriebut most of the differences have to do with gnome-desktop and a few tweeks to video drivers and such04:18
valorieand their custom installer04:19
valoriewylel: ^^^04:22
wylelwell I have done that04:22
wylelnot that its absolutely necessary to do, was just wondering04:23
wylelsince it is 19.0404:23
wylelmore of a leave pop join kubuntu type thing, and if its even possible04:23
valorieI've not tried what you've done04:23
valorieI have a system76 computer but have always run kubuntu04:23
wylelnice04:23
valorieand I have a popos usb stick04:24
wylelI love KDE Plasma04:24
valorieso one of these days I should try it04:24
wylelso in the grand scheme of things, im running Kubuntu04:24
valoriea number of the sys76 people run kde software04:24
wylelbut upgrades come to Pop04:24
valorieyes, you are using our packages04:24
wylelcorrect04:24
valorieI mean, you *could* convert it by removing the PopOS!-only repos04:25
valoriebut until you need to do that, I wouldn't bother04:25
wylelI wonder if that would break anything04:25
valorieotoh I would make sure that my backups are good and complete04:25
valoriebut that's always true04:26
valorieI guess you'll see at 19.10 time04:26
wyleloh yeah, i take snapshots every hour, day and week04:26
valoriecool04:26
wylelI guess I couldnt break much lol04:26
valorieright04:26
valorieplus a reinstall is so easy and quick04:26
valoriethere is a PPA I think for the special drivers that they want you to use04:27
wylelI guess thats another question, what if I wanted to use my same setup of Plasma that I have here on another machine that I am running Kubuntu on?04:27
valorieaccording to their help docs04:27
valorieyou can copy over your ~/.config and ~/,local files04:28
valoriethat have to do with plasma*04:28
wylelanything that starts with K I would imagine04:28
wylelminus anything thats not KDE that starts with K04:29
valoriewell there are lots of k-applications04:29
valoriethey are just text files04:29
valorieit's easy to see exactly what you are doing04:29
wylelyeah, might try that04:29
wylelthe laptop has nothing on it yet so wouldnt be too hard to nuke and pave04:30
valorieI learn something every time I mess around in there04:30
valorieand right, if you don't like the change, you can just move the old folder back04:32
valorieI never blow them away; just rename to blahblah.bak04:33
valorieor .old04:33
wylelright04:33
chealerwylel: do you have that much Plasma setup?04:36
wylelquite a bit04:36
wylelI guess I could nuke and pave04:36
chealerwylel: have much time do you think it would it take to re-create?04:37
valorieif you have done a lot of configs, just save that .config file04:38
valorieonce you move it in and rename the "vanilla" file you'll have it04:39
valoriewell, after restarting/re-logging into plasma04:39
wylelI would say about 2 weeks of pretty extensive changes and setup04:39
chealerwylel: 2 person-weeks? for your whole KDE setup or just Plasma?04:49
wylelthe entire setup04:49
wylelNvidia setup, steam, games and configuration for games, and plasma04:49
chealerwylel: oh, well that's a way bigger question. probably depends on your KDE versions on each side. downgrading is surely not supported, so if you try using newer file formats with older software, expect issues.04:52

sid21gHello guys wanted to ask is there a different pip for python and pythn3?14:59
tomreynsid21g: there are different ones for python2 and python3, yes. the python2 one is called pip, the python3 one is called pip3.15:04
tomreyni'm just installing 19.04 and realize you can go 'back' to the partitioning step right after starting the installation. but doing so breaks the installation.15:18
tomreyndoes this ring a bell (known bug)?15:19
tomreyni'm not even sure whether kubuntu 19.04 uses subiquity or something else?15:19
tomreynerr ubiquity. and yes, it is.15:23
jubo2y016:16
jubo2got a problem16:16
jubo2Kubuntu 18.04.latest refuses to mount USB sticks.16:17
jubo2Just says "Malformed URL" if I click "Open with Dolphin"16:18
jubo2I guess I have 2 compromised systems, coz I did something inexcusably stupid16:19
jubo2I think I'll burn a fresh Kubuntu stick on some clean computer and install clean both systems16:20
jubo2I think I got rid of the compromise, but I grabbed all of ~/.config from the (probably) compromised system and here be the result16:20
juboxiHi, jubo2 here on a Kubuntu 19.04.latest16:26
juboxithis one reports "An error occurred while accessing 'Home', the system responded: The requested operation has failed: Error mounting /dev/sdb1 at /media/juboxi/KINGSTON 64GB: Unknow error when mounting /dev/sdb1" when trying to mount the USB16:26
juboxiSeems all USB sticks break as soon as I plug them into a system16:26
juboxi"Unknown error" ... that's not really helpful16:27
BluesKajdid you run lsusb16:27
BluesKaj?16:27
juboxiI can do that now16:28
juboxiBluesKaj: Looks just fine: "Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0951:1666 Kingston Technology DataTraveler 100 G3/G4/SE9 G2"16:28
BluesKajjuboxi, what filesytem format did you use for the stick ?16:29
juboxiNTFS iirc16:29
juboxicoz if I format to EXT4 with gparted I can't ever mount the stick because somewhere it reads that it is owned by root16:30
juboxithis was not always the case, but lately it is16:30
juboxiThere is really not trusting computers unless you are paying a team of people $100,000 / yr / head to make sure the shit actually works and does not do things that are not desired16:31
juboxiMore stuff keeps on breaking than I have time and energy to attempt to fix16:32
BluesKajodd, ntfs on my usb work on my usb sticks16:32
BluesKajoops repeating myself again16:33
juboxiI have now 2 sticks I cannot access and if the past events hold true one more stick would just break if I tried to plug it in16:34
juboxia note on other things: The devels really improved memory footprint of Kubuntu in 19.04 (maybe even 18.10, haven't tried that) ... I can sometimes see under 1GB in use16:35
tomreynrun ntfsfix against the partiitons holding the ntfs file systems on your sticks.16:38
tomreynor better chkdsk /f on windows16:39
juboxitomreyn: "N: Unable to locate package ntfsfix" when running 'apt show ntfsfix'16:44
juboxiso I guess I cannot get it from standard repos16:45
juboxitomreyn: oh, ok, it was already installed by some package. Ran it with sudo on /dev/sdb1 and now the volume mounts just fine. So big thanks for your helpful suggestion16:48
juboxiNow only if could figure out why they break..16:48
jubo2oh great... only to notice that 'sudo rm -rf directoryname' no longer works on the USB stick16:53
jubo2nor does removing it with Dolphin16:53
=== szymon is now known as Guest37454
tomreynjuboxi: the reason it will have broken is that it was not unmounted properly (e.g. stick pullked while still mounted, or not properly 'ejected' via software). it will have mounted read-only now. you can run chkdsk /f against it on windows (which is the only safe way to do it, not supported on linux), or you could decide to not care about your data and run ntfsfix with the option it offers to remove the dirty bit.17:23
tomreyneither should enable  you to write to it again.17:23
tomreynjubo2: ^17:23
jubo2I can just nuke the contents of the sticks, but this is just giving me very bad uncomfortability that sticks keep on breaking. One day I could actually use an USB stick that works.17:24
jubo2and I did remove them both by unmounting first, so that kinda does not ring true that removal without unmounting would be the cause17:25
AlabalisticHi all good?17:26
tomreynjubo2: it could also be a software issue, i didn't mean to blame you there, just point out all the safety measures one needs to take.17:41
tomreynjubo2: i don't think these usb sticks themselves are breaking, though, it's probably just a file system issue. ntfs is not the best choice if you don't depend on it for transferring files between ubuntu and windows.17:42
sid21gAny takers for this query? https://superuser.com/questions/1460458/unable-to-run-vlc-says-drm-version-is-1-6-0-but-this-driver-is-only-compatible17:56
jubo2tomreyn: I don't use any Windows. The problem that USB sticks formatted with gparted could not be mounted unless root began exhibiting... I dunno 3-5 months ago18:47
jubo2tomreyn: Sorry for the low quality English. So if I use gparted to make a partition on an USB stick I cannot mount it on any system. This is why I switched to NTFS in hope that it would work, but it just keeps on breaking18:48

tomreynjubo2: your english is fine (as far as i can tell, i'm also not a native speaker). i recommend using ext4 then. To solve the issue with file system restrictions, you just need to chown the mount point to your user, as well as any existing files and folders (and other file system objects) on the file system once.19:27
tomreynindeed it should probably be so that this is fully manageable on the GUI, and what you describe sounds like it may be a bug (if this used to work without a need to modify configurations, but no longer does).19:28
tomreyni don't actually use kde, so can't provide first hand experience on how it is or how it should be there.19:28
