marcoagpintoHello BluesKaj and guys!13:08
marcoagpinto:)13:08
marcoagpintoIt is me, the cola demon13:08
=== JanC is now known as Guest31310
BluesKajhey marcoagpinto ...yes we know that already, also sugar freak :-)13:09
marcoagpinto:)13:10
BluesKajyour pancreas will pay for that abuse when you are older13:11
BluesKajlike I am13:11
marcoagpintoI am already old13:13
marcoagpinto:)13:13
marcoagpinto4513:13
BluesKajI'm much older13:13
pragmaticenigmaBluesKaj is the ripe old age of 2113:13
pragmaticenigmaas am I13:14
BluesKajwish that was true, pragmaticenigma13:14
pragmaticenigmawell... I at least stopped counting at 2113:14
BluesKajI no longer look forward to birthdays13:16
Jonopolysad i can't use ubuntu on laptop T_T13:16
pragmaticenigmaWhat's preventing you from doing that Jonopoly ?13:16
marcoagpintoand I haven't done exercise this morning :(((((( I was here at the computer13:16
* pragmaticenigma takes car keys and sends marcoagpinto out to the store across town for a soda13:17
Jonopolypragmaticenigma: Because on windows i do android development and it runs alright 40-45c13:17
Jonopolywhen i use any of the ubuntu flavours i get 55-60 just idle13:17
pragmaticenigmaare you talking CPU temperature?13:18
lordievaderJonopoly: Android studio runs fine on Linux13:18
=== JanC_ is now known as JanC
Jonopolylordievader: my laptop is only 3 weeks old - don't want it running extra 10-15c13:18
Jonopolywhen it's not needed13:18
pragmaticenigmaJonopoly: What processor is in the laptop?13:19
Jonopolyhmm I'm not on it atm let me try google specs13:19
lordievaderWait, that is idle?13:20
lordievaderBrr13:20
Jonopolypragmaticenigma: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus-tuf-fx505gm-nvidia-gtx-1060-16gb-15.6-fhd-144hz-3ms-i7-8750h-gaming-laptop-lt-26f-as.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwjrvpBRC0ARIsAFrFuV8INKOPu0ax5BV7tx0fjtFjGcxnxdrr-BwRNEIuUiFCSQmGu0L6mpgaAuBIEALw_wcB13:20
JonopolyIntel Core i7-8750H13:21
JanCidle temp differs per CPU, and measurements aren't always right, but higher temps on idle is certainly not normal13:21
JonopolyYeah, it gets roughly 55-60 just on desktop with weechat open13:22
lordievaderJonopoly: What temperatures does it reach under stress?13:22
Jonopolywhereas on windows it maybe reaches 50? when rendering android apps13:22
JanCmy desktop CPU is at 27°C while playing a live stream in Firefox right now13:23
Jonopolylordievader: I haven't stressed it, i didn't want it to get too warm (as it's pretty new)13:23
JonopolyJanC: Laptops are usually warmer than desktops13:23
JanCright, but there shouldn't be much difference between Ubuntu & Windows on idle13:24
JanCthere might be an ACPI bug that Windows platform drivers work around13:24
Jonopolyi don't know how 'new' laptop is but i got it new couple weeks ago13:24
Jonopolynot entirely sure when it was released though13:24
pragmaticenigmaJonopoly: I would start with checking to see if there are any BIOS/Firmware updates for the unit for ASUS. I found several articles regarding that CPU and many refer to needing a BIOS update. That said, the temperature sensors are not that acurate and most of the readings are done via a themoresistor which requires a calculation to derive the temperature. Which means whom ever wrote the driver for Linux might not have13:27
pragmaticenigmaused the exact same formula that the developer from Microsoft did13:27
JanCthere's lots of hardware that is released early while it still has ACPI bugs and they come with special workaround-drivers for Windows, but then on linux someone has to figure out what's wrong and implement a workaround too, which takes time and people  :-(13:28
JanCBIOS/firmware updates might fix that too indeed13:28
JonopolyYeah i am coming to terms with maybe i can't use it now...13:28
Jonopolybut one day i can13:28
Jonopolyand that day will be good13:28
JanCpragmaticenigma: I assume that for the in-CPU measurements they would use the right formula?13:31
BluesKajthere might be some daemons using up cpu and creating extra heat like file indexers etc13:33
JanChm, true13:33
JonopolyEven without the sensors13:33
JanCnot much files to index on a new system though?13:33
Jonopolyit feels slightly at touch.. warmer13:33
BluesKajthey still run tho13:34
Jonopolynot sure if it matters but around the enter key it feels slightly warmer13:34
JonopolyI'll install it tonight again.. and give it a look13:34
JanCand it should be possible to see a process that uses lots of CPU13:34
BluesKajhtop is one13:34
Jonopolyluckily my laptop has the option to remove boot options13:34
lordievaderWhen running on battery, how much power is it draining from the battery? (You can view this via powertop)13:35
Jonopolyso can easily install an os and remove it13:35
JanCmight be useful to check what is below the enter key, but I assume it will be the CPU  :)13:36
pragmaticenigmaJanC: The formula would be vendor specific to the materials used to create the sensor. There can be variations in a single batch too.13:40
JanCpragmaticenigma: but for the same CPU it would be the same sensor and I think the CPU does the reading of it?13:40
JanCfor sensors outside the CPU you are right that they are not always very accurate13:41
JanCand might be read differently between OS13:42
pragmaticenigmaJanC: but that negates the material variations used in the sensor. The sensors were added as a safety to cut power to the CPU, the ability for an application to read said sensor was an after thought13:42
JanCpragmaticenigma: the point is not if they are 100% accurate, the point is that it's the same sensor in both cases, and that they are read the same13:43
pragmaticenigmaJanC: The point i'm making is, because the calculation is based off the measured resistance of the sensor. It is inheriantly inaccurate, adding to that the whom ever wrote the driver to read the output of the sensor may not have optimized it for that specific sensor13:44
JanCthe "driver" is not in the OS13:45
tomreynhggdh: i'm moving here, if you don't mind. https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?pkg=apt;dist=unstable is pretty crowded, and not few of them are documentation bugs, not few of which have been open for a good while.14:55
hggdhdoes not surprise me... doc patches are not considered THAT important (and do not seem to carry glory)14:56
tomreynhmm yes, probably not. but they're essential for people learning.15:00
tomreynbut i admit my motivation is also lower than it should be there.15:00
hggdhthere you go :-)15:05
hggdhbut we can try. As soon as I am back I will start looking at all the doc patches in Debian, and match them to bugs in LP. Gven a few of the DDs are also in Ubuntu... we may get traction15:06
tomreynthis would be lovely15:07
tomreyni'm not too experienced in producing easily mergable patches for debian packages (or man pages specifically) though. would probably just download the latest apt sources from debian, unpack, create a second copy, make changes as i see fit in the copy, then diff -Naur > update_manpages.diff15:10
* tomreyn late lunch, bbl15:13
lotuspsychjegood evening to all16:15
daftykinsi hear you're dealing with tmlake's Kodi troubles20:09
daftykinsbest not to entertain someone who is insisting on sticking to an older release20:10
Bashing-omdaftykins: A work in progress: "< ioria> tmlake, so, try the old verson of 18.04 (with kernel 4.15.0-54 not 4.18)"20:13
daftykinstheir own log said they were on 4.15, heh20:14
daftykinsthey filed a bug against an outdated release on a PPA... madness20:14
Bashing-omdaftykins: :P .. there is that .. yup .20:15
