brenster21bashing-om two questions when should i replace the thermal paste, where can i buy some at 840 at night?00:18
Bashing-ombrenster21: Replace the paste ( about a 5 year lifespan) when you can not determine any other reason for the CPU to be running hot. Thermal paste is "specialty" - can not get it just anywhere/anytime.00:24
brenster21I figured as much, for cleaning hte fan and heatsink. I should use compressed air and rubbing alchol right?00:25
Bashing-ombrenster21: Yup .. and take care that when spraying that you do not over spin the fan blades- I hold them still with a pencil.00:27

OerHekssteam has a manual for that02:24

OerHeksdepends how you installed steam, flatpak needs some tweaking > flatpak override --user --filesystem=/media/1.0TB-Hard-Disk com.valvesoftware.Steam02:29

This overlaps with my phone's hotspot network range... causing packets to get dropped. I modified the vmware DHCP configuration file at  /etc/vmware/vmnet1/dhcpd/dhcpd.conf to change the ip address to a different network range... but, upon reboot, the vmnet1's address keeps reverting03:09

tomreynhow do you tell?14:02
B|ack0ptime freezes \ screen buttons14:03

tomreynso just based on graphical output. you'd see the same if just the video driver locked up but the kernel stilloperates fine.14:03
B|ack0pit is intel gpu14:04
tomreynto tell those apart, blindly switching to a tty and pressing ctrl-alt-del, or using the sysrq method, may help.14:04
tomreynif those succeed, it means the kernel was still working. it can also means you then have more logs available at   journalctl -b -1 -e14:05
B|ack0pok when it happens which one should i do? sysreq or tty ?14:05
tomreyntty + ctrl-alt-delete first, watch the storage LED, see if it flashes differently, if it does the system is probably trying to shut down properly at this point.14:06
tomreynif it does not, use magic sysrq. if this does not succeed either, you have a full hardware / kernel hang, and should continue stress testing.14:07
B|ack0pctrl+alt+f3-f6  then ctrl+alt+del = tty14:08
B|ack0psysrq = alt+prtscr14:09
tomreynyou can try switching to a tty now and back to your graphical desktop, so you'll know which tty is really a text console.14:09
tomreynon a text console, you can press sysrq + h to see if it generally works14:10
b1ack0ptomreyn: i am on f314:10

systestGiven all the breaking changes with systemd, how does one configure /etc/resolv.conf when using DHCP?14:16
systestI can't find any good documentation for this14:17
mgedminif you rm the /etc/resolv.conf symlink and create a text file in its place, systemd will not touch it14:17
mgedmin(this is documented somewhere but I can't be bothered to look up where exactly)14:18
systestmgedmin,  but that assumes you're doing static networking14:18
systesti.e. it's generally up to the network config to add the DNS servers to that file14:19
systesti.e. the DNS servers supplied by DHCP14:19
mgedminwhat exactly do you want to configure?  you can always put nameserver 127.0.0.53 in your resolv.conf and have it use systemd-resolved, which will forward to the DNS servers supplied by DHCP14:20
systestmgedmin, to be blunt, systemd-resolved isn't ready for prime time14:20
mgedminfor more advanced dynamic configuration you can use resolvconf, which predates systemd-resolved14:20
systestyou can't do split DNS with it, so I have to replace it14:20
mgedminI used to do split DNS a few years back; don't remember how exactly but I'm sure resolvconf and a local dnsmasq were involved14:21
mgedminI have notes from back then14:22
systestmgedmin, y, and that's what I'm doing now.  except I'm using PowerDNS recursor instead of dnsmasq but same idea14:23
mgedminand your question is how to tell your PowerDNS to forward to the servers provided by your local DHCP server?14:23
systestI'll check out the resolveconf docs14:23
mgedminiirc the way it worked with resolvconf and dnsmasq was that resolvconf gets the DHCP info and writes them into a temp file somewhere in /run14:23
mgedminand dnsmasq is configured to read forwarded servers from that file, so things work out14:24
xibalbacheck out powerdns-recursor if you're just using this for a small/lab kind of environment.14:24
mgedmin(it's not magic, just shell scripts in /etc/network/ifup.d/*, but they're already written for me which is why I liked using resolvconf)14:24
systestxibalba, see up a few lines ;-)14:24
mgedminmind you, that was in 2010, things might have changed or become broken since then...14:25
xibalbaah whoops...great minds and such =P14:25
systestmgedmin, y, that's the problem, systemd has taken over networking too and appears to only play well with systemd-reslover14:26
yoggHi14:27
systestat least in 18.0414:27
yoggHas someone a how to mmcli with pppd for me? I managed to get a working connection with mmcli but have no idea how to configure ppp now14:28
mgedminsystest: and we're back to the beginning where I told you how to have a static resolv.conf that points to your favourite local resolver14:29
systestmgedmin, that's the issue,  i.e. `static`.  The DNS servers that "local resolver" are supposed to use are supplied by DHCP, i.e. `dynamically`14:30
systestI _could_ kludge something together with `netplan ip leases eth0 | grep '^DNS='`14:31
systestand just hope that amazon doesn't deside to change the DNS servers over the lifetime of the system14:31
systest s/deside/decide.  However, I was hoping there was a way to get the systemd-networkd service to manage that as part of the DHCP process14:33
systestthanks for the replies, much appreicated14:33
mgedminsystest: no, no, no, nobody suggests hardcoding DHCP replies in /etc/resolv.conf, by "local" I meant a forwarder running on 127.0.0.114:34
systestmgedmin, I think we've miscomunicated here.  my fault for not being clear.  I am running a local resolver on 127.0.0.1 and I do point to it.  (I've kept saying manage reslove conf but whatI really need is a way to get the DNS servers replied by DHCP into the config for that local recursor)14:38
mgedminright14:38
systestand I think I have and OK fix14:38
mgedminso I believe /etc/network/if-up.d/ still works in 18.0414:38
mgedminand you can drop shell scripts there that will run every time a network connection comes up14:38
mgedminand these scripts will see DHCP-provided DNS servers in environment variables14:38
mgedminand you can then feed them to your local forwarder any way you see fit14:39
systestcool, that would do it.  thanks.  I'll check the docs14:39
mgedmin'man interfaces' describes the script directories and the environment variables14:46
mgedmin'man run-parts' describes the naming conventions (which scripts will execute and which will be ignored) and ordering14:46
systest'ifupdown has been replaced by netplan(5) on this system'  LOL, at least I'm getting closer.  thanks again14:54
BluesKajsystest, one can still use ifupdown and the /etc/network/interfaces file settings with dhcp if you wish, with network manager disabled14:59
systestBluesKaj, it's not clear to me network manager runs any longer under 18.0415:02
systestand I'm trying to modify as little as possible15:03
BluesKajsys15:04
BluesKajsystest,  nm is installed by default15:04
systestmost like my error but I'm not seeing it on the DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS" system built from the Ubuntu supplied AMI15:07
tdssystest: going back a bit, what issues did you have with resolved? it should handle split DNS nicely, though you may want to look at using the search domain ~. if you want to force queries over a a specific interface's resolvers15:07
systesttds,  I found no way to configure systemd-resloved to send queries for specific TLD to an alternete DNS server/port.  If you know how do do that I would be VERY happy to hear about it15:09
systestspecficially, I need to send queries for the 'consul.' TLD to 127.0.0.1:860015:10
abijoywhat does package-name_all.deb mean?15:10
tdsresolved is designed to handle split DNS scenarios on multi-homed hosts, so I'm not sure you could easily do that, particularly with a non-53 port, hmm15:12
tdsunless you have an additional interface you can tie this consul domain and resolver to15:12
yoggabijoy "package-name" is the name of the package "all" means not cpu specific. "deb" is the file format15:13
systesthonestly, too many hoops.  This is a _common_ use case (well, it's not uncommon)  dnsmask, powerdns-recursor and all handle it with a single line config15:13
mgedminhmmmm https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/442598/how-to-configure-systemd-resolved-and-systemd-networkd-to-use-local-dns-server-f15:13
abijoy@yogg like it can be installed on both 32 and 64 bit OS?15:14
mgedminhttps://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/NetworkManager/DNS also implies that systemd-resolved supports split DNS15:15
Fuseteammore like it can be installed on arm x86 and what not15:15
yoggabijoy yes such packages work on all platforms15:15
abijoy@yogg thanks15:16
systestmgedmin, thanks but unless I've missed something (quite possible) networks manager had been replaced by systemd-networkd in 18.0415:20
mgedmin"replaced" is a word; ubuntu desktop uses network-manager; ubuntu-server probably uses systemd-networkd15:21
systestFWIW, I _can_ have the replacement resolver on 127.0.0.1 send querries to systemd-resolved on 127.0.0.5315:21
mgedmin(actually netplan with the systemd-networkd backend)15:21
mgedminbut point is, network-manager, when it integrates with systemd-resolved, can configure split DNS, which means systemd-resolved must support it!15:21
mgedmin(at least sufficiently recent versions of it; I can't vouch about the one in 18.04 specifically as I've never tried this myself)15:22
systestI think it's doing it by using multiple interfaces.  e.g. "request for exampleA.com go out over the VPN interface, when it's up"  That's a different use/config case15:23
systestI only have one interface,  eth015:23
systestand, fair point, this is Server, not desktop15:23
mgedminoh snap, it might require a whole entire network interface indeed15:24
tdsyes, that's how resolved handles it - you could emulate it on a server with just a dummy interface for consul though15:25
systestthat DOES work with systemd-networkd/resolved.  e.g. if one brings up a VPN interface you can route querries for a set of domans to the DNS servers associated with that VPN inerface15:26

systesttds, i.e. spin up a phantom interface with the DNS server for that interface configured to be 127.0.0.1:8600?   kludgy but may work15:27
systestbut pdns-recursor "just works".  think it's cleaner to see if I can et systemd-networkd to fire a script when it configures the interface via DHCP15:28
* systest isn't holding his breath on systemd-networkd having support for that ;-)15:29
systestwas just told systemd-networkd does'nt support that functionality but to check out https://gitlab.com/craftyguy/networkd-dispatcher15:34

Sansayin the mount directory?20:29
Sansayin the mount directory no20:29
Sansaynothing in there20:29
SansayUUID="7aca25de-3848-41d4-b290-d8b891240d41" /mnt/disks/localssd ext4 discard,defaults,nofail 0 220:30
Sansaythats in my fstab, that uuid represents my drive i got that using blkid20:30
tomreynSansay: what does this report?   sudo file -Ls /dev/disk/by-uuid/7aca25de-3848-41d4-b290-d8b891240d4120:37
youtahFYI Followup: I have had twice now, where my audio (once from an upgrade from 18.04.02 to 18.04.03, and fresh install of 18.04.03) went completely missing.20:38
youtahI found the (possible) issue20:39
Sansay> /dev/disk/by-uuid/7aca25de-3848-41d4-b290-d8b891240d41: Linux rev 1.0 ext4 filesystem data, UUID=7aca25de-3848-41d4-b290-d8b891240d41 (extents) (64bit) (large files) (huge files)20:39
youtahMy sound card (output device) was showing up as some random chrome-remote-desktop device in ~/.config/chrome-remote-desktop/....20:39
youtahnuking this directory and restarting my machine restored the other Output devices20:40
youtah</random fyi>20:40
tomreynSansay: and if you manually mount this to a mount point you created previously?    mkdir /mnt/7aca25de-3848-41d4-b290-d8b891240d41 && mount -v /dev/disk/by-uuid/7aca25de-3848-41d4-b290-d8b891240d41 /mnt/7aca25de-3848-41d4-b290-d8b891240d4120:41
Sansayi modified that a bit but let me try your copy20:43
Sansaybut it says its mounted but i dont see anyhting20:43
Sansaymount: /dev/sdb mounted on /mnt/7aca25de-3848-41d4-b290-d8b891240d41.20:44
Sansayinteresting though20:44
Sansayyours mounted20:44
Sansaywhen i tried to mount to my old directory it failed even though it said the same thing20:44
Sansaydoesnt make any sense unless would a symbolic link referenciing the mount point cause issues?20:47
tomreynif you tried to mount to tha instead, yes, i guess so.20:48
Comnenus# netplan ip leases ensXXX is pointing to the proper DNS servers, but I can't get anything to resolve.  Has anyone run into this?20:52
Sansayafter removing the symbolic links it still does not mount to that other directory20:53
Sansaydeleting the directory and remaking it seemed to fix it20:55
Sansaylisting the folder though no files showed up but must have been something in there20:55
dirkmkdirhas anyone ever heard of small business open source initiatives?  There doesn't seem to be a way that I can pay a firm to replace all my WIndoze with Unix.21:20
dirkmkdirThat was a bad sentence, but I'm gonna stand by it.21:21
saorMSP/ITSP's fucking hate open source21:21
dirkmkdirI'm pretty sure they hate Open Source cause there MSP model is some pretty much a scheme to stay profitable with Office 365.21:22
genii!language21:22
ubottuPlease avoid any language that may be considered offensive, including acronyms and obfuscation of such - also see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines || The main channels are English only, for other languages, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/ChannelList21:22
saorOh fuck my bad21:22
* genii sighs21:22
geniisaor: Please try to keep use of profanity under control.21:25
saorlol21:25
saordirkmkdir: The entire model is reselling existing services21:25
dirkmkdirServices that are included in open source for free.21:26
dirkmkdirI think there should be a Open MSP or at the very least something non-ms vertical21:26
dirkmkdirLike Chromium21:27
saorWell look at Datto they just piggy back open source and resell at a premium21:27
geniidirkmkdir: There's various *nix equivalents for such things as Office and so on, but people within the business still need to know how to install/troubleshoot/maintain these21:27
dirkmkdirTrue but if the MSP cost of 1/4 of the Windows price. I thnk it would work.21:27
dirkmkdirthere are so many businesses out there that don't know 1/2 of their data is already on Linux.21:28
saorPretty neiche market, also staffing support techs who know linux would be a nightmare21:28
dirkmkdirAnd don't care21:28
dirkmkdirI own a Windows MSP now.21:28
dirkmkdirthey call care.21:28
saorI work for one :)21:28
dirkmkdirThe monthly cost is where it all boils down.21:29
geniidirkmkdir: This is probably beyond the scope of this channel ( which is more narrowly for Ubuntu-specific support issues). A more general channel for it would likely be the main ##linux one21:29
dirkmkdirWhy would you use Datto and not Wasabi?21:30
dirkmkdirSounds good, i talked to ubuntu sales and they said here was the place to be.21:30
dirkmkdirHave a wonderful day.21:30
geniidirkmkdir: Most of Canonical's support plans are pricing can be found here https://ubuntu.com/pricing21:32
geniiare/and21:32
dirkmkdirYeeeeah, I thought we werent talking about that anymore21:33
dirkmkdirLet's take this offline.21:33
geniiheh21:33
Bray90820How would I run sudo inside of a bash script without a password22:05
Bray90820I believe it is something with visudo22:05
=== mnemonic is now known as Guest33610
sarnoldBray90820: what are you trying to do?22:12
JFox762hi22:40
JFox762i need assistance setting up a network share in Windows VM to Linux host....22:40
JFox762it keeps saying "the file or folder smb://user.192.168.228.128/%5C%5CDESKTOP-7MKU2PH%5CPublic does not exist.22:46
NegativeFlareJFox762: it looks like you might have the URL wrong23:07
NegativeFlareor you don't have the guest essentials installed properly (if you're using VBOX that is)23:07
JFox762NegativeFlare... I'm just using IP address 192.168.228.12823:14
JFox762which is the IP address of the Virtual network the VM sits on23:14
NegativeFlareJFox762: Right, but does linux see that host? For example, can you ping that IP? Also, 'smb://user.192.168.228.128/%5C%5CDESKTOP-7MKU2PH%5CPublic' looks malformed. It might need to look more like this: 'smb://user@192.168.228.128/%5C%5CDESKTOP-7MKU2PH%5CPublic'23:15
NegativeFlareor something of the such.23:15
JFox762NegativeFlare: I'm using VMWare not VirtualBox23:15
JFox762yes I can ping 192.168.228.12823:15
JFox762from linux23:15
NegativeFlarehmm, I haven't used vmware in ages.23:16
NegativeFlareNot for file transfers anyways lol.23:16
sarnoldcan you use smbclient to talk to that host? what shares are exported from it?23:17
JFox762NegativeFlare: I didn't enter smb://user.192.168.228.128 etc etc23:18
JFox762I merely filled out the fields as follows23:18
JFox762Name: (Random word)23:18
JFox762Server: 192.168.228.12823:18
JFox762Folder /Public23:18
JFox762That brings up a prompt for username and password23:18
JFox762uhh nevermind23:20
JFox762i figured it out23:20
sarnoldwhat was it?23:20
JFox762I have no idea?23:20
JFox762Password was wrong maybe??23:20
JFox762capslock?23:20
JFox762Odd though23:20
JFox762why would it give me "Folder not found" rather than a Authentication error?23:21
OerHeksoh, vmware, ...23:21
Betalwould be better against bruteforce attack don't show the real result23:22
JFox762odd23:31
JFox762so i was able to browse the files23:31
JFox762wait23:31
JFox762let me check something23:31
JFox762so now it is saying "Access denied to smb@://user/192.168.228.128/Public"23:33
Night_ElfHello all. Has anyone here experienced trouble using kvirc when connecting to irc servers via ssl connections? It would connect, but then disconnects with a message "Too large". I get the same when using it under Linux Mint. But when using Debian (like now), it works with no problems.23:39
sarnoldNight_Elf: is that the entire error?23:39
abclovei want to use lubuntu, so ‘Download lubuntu(Intel x86) is 32bit or 64 bit?23:39
Night_ElfI need to check. But to what I remember, yes. Right now I don't have access to any Ubuntu or Mint machine. The message is: "SSL: Too large". Indeed, very cryptic. To my understanding it is something that has to do with the ssl libraries.23:40
sarnoldabclove: it depends on the type of computer you've got; if you're already got a linux system, check /proc/cpuinfo to get the name of the cpu, then we can look up what that cpu can do23:41
Night_ElfIt is also a test I performed. I was using an Ubuntu machine, where I installed a chrooted Debian, and then went on running Kvirc of that chrooted debian in Ubuntu. And it worked.23:42
sarnoldNight_Elf: hmm, I can't spot any errors in the source that look like "too large" https://sources.debian.org/src/kvirc/4:5.0.0+dfsg-1/src/kvilib/net/KviSSL.cpp/ --23:44
sarnoldNight_Elf: but there's a handful of errors from openssl that might match, https://codesearch.debian.net/search?q=package%3Aopenssl+too+large -- do any of those look familiar?23:44
Night_Elfsarnold: It is that "Data too large" message. The section of the file:  openssl_1.1.1c-1/crypto/rsa/rsa_err.c23:47
Night_ElfBut the odd thing is, that I checked the ssl version of the packages of both Ubuntu and Debian. It was the same in both.23:48
sarnoldopenssl has enough patches that that might not be a good indicator23:48
matzy_has anyone had trouble installing ubuntu on recent hp laptops?  i tried to install on a hp spectre x360 and everything went fine, but it always boots into windows boot manager, as if it's not recognizing grub at all.  i've never encountered such an issue before.  has any had a similar problem or knows how to solve this?23:53
Night_Elfsarnold: I see23:53
sarnoldmatzy_: the usual cause is windows not actually shutting down, but suspending23:53
sarnoldmatzy_: try a reboot instead of shutdown, and see if that helps23:54
matzy_sarnold ok so start the laptop in windows, then restart and see if it loads grub?23:55
matzy_thanks for the suggestion, but restarting still brought me automatically back to windows23:56
sarnolddang23:58
sarnoldI heard something about a windows fast start option somewhere that might be able to be disabled23:58
sarnoldand I think I heard that it's even in some bioses23:58
matzy_cool, i'll google for that, thanks for the idea23:59
jeremy31The Windows hybrid shutdown can be changed in power options in Window control panel if I remember23:59
