FurretUberI'm having trouble using ArduBlock on Xubuntu 18.04: the theme made some text boxes have white text on white background. As a comparison there is Linux Mint 19.2 Mate in the same screenshot, showing the background with the proper color and white text: https://i.imgur.com/eHP9BPc.png00:32
brainwashFurretUber: only happens with the Greybird theme?00:49
brainwashthat is what Xubuntu uses by default00:50
FurretUberHappens with all light themes installed on stock Xubuntu 18.04, including Greybird00:50
FurretUberA not-so-good workaround is using a dark theme, as Adwaita-Dark00:50
brainwashnot quite sure what the issue could be00:53
brainwashmint 19.2 is based on ubuntu 18.04, right?00:54
FurretUberYes, it is00:54
brainwashso, the GTK version should be the same00:54
brainwashmmh00:54
brainwashFurretUber: did you check the ArduBlock bug tracker yet?00:56
brainwashor whatever support channel they have00:57
brainwashit could be a known issue00:57
FurretUberI searched and found a single result. It was something related to hard coded colors, so probably from before the current version, as the current version does change text color if I set a dark theme00:58
brainwashI would check with a default ubuntu installation or live session00:59
FurretUberI'm downloading Ubuntu Mate 18.04.3 and Linux Mint 19.2 Xfce and will test if it happens on them00:59
brainwashgood idea01:00

sambofeeling stupid...how do I launch the xubuntu desktop from the command line?01:46
brainwashsambo: the Xfce session can be started with "startxfce4"01:58
FurretUberbrainwash: I finished testing Linux Mint 19.2 Xfce. The bug is not present on it02:09
FurretUberAnd it is present on Ubuntu Mate 18.04.3... strange02:13
FurretUberbrainwash: It's the Mint-Y theme that has something that makes it work right. Copying the Mint-Y theme to Ubuntu Mate live media and setting it made ArduBlock text boxes appear correctly02:18
FurretUberUsing The Mint-Y theme on Xubuntu 18.04 fixes the bug too02:43
brainwashFurretUber: now it would it interesting to know if the problem is still present 19.04 or 19.10 (dev release)09:26
brainwashFurretUber: which have more up-to-date GTK themes09:26

csanyipalHello,09:58
csanyipalI am using Latest LTS release: 18.04, Bionic Beaver .10:00
csanyipalI just instaled Fugio but can't start it.10:00
csanyipalThe message I get is:10:00
csanyipalALSA lib conf.c:3750:(snd_config_update_r) Cannot access file /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf10:00
csanyipalHow can I solve this problem?10:01
rud0lfwhat first column of: "ls -a /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf" says?10:35
xubuntu86wHi. Does xubuntu include a simple word processor.10:53
AndrioIIRC it includes LibreOffice.10:54
fietYou do remember correctly: https://www.ncf.ca/ncf/support/wiki/Xubuntu10:56
fietI would not call it simple though10:56
AndrioIt also includes Mousepad.10:56
AndrioWhich is much better than the old Windows Notepad.10:57
xubuntu86wThanks. Libre office more than meets my needs.10:57
csanyipalrud0lf: It says: /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf11:23
rud0lfls -l11:23
csanyipal-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9663 dec   19  2018 /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf11:23
rud0lfi mean file mode, should be something like 664 or -rw-r--r--11:23
rud0lfhmmm so that's fine... i'm out of ideas :)11:24
Andriothat is not 66411:27
rud0lf64411:45
rud0lfmy mistake, typo11:45
csanyipalThanks, anyway for the try.11:57
FurretUberbrainwash: the white text on white background is also present on Xubuntu 19.04 when using Greybird12:13
diogenes_FurretUber, on what application?12:13
FurretUberArduBlock12:14
diogenes_have you tried adwaita, adwaita-dark, ark, ark-dark.12:15
FurretUberDark themes are a workaround: text appears black and the background white. However, the intended way is to have white text and the background color being the color of the blocks. Here is a image comparing the correct (Linux Mint 19.2 Mate) and the incorrect (Xubuntu 18.04.3): https://i.imgur.com/eHP9BPc.png12:17
diogenes_maybe it would be possible to do some adjustments in .gtkrc-2-0 or something like that.12:19

jbpickThe inverse.19:07
tomreynso what have you done to disable the intel graphics so far?19:09
jbpickI looked for an option in the BIOS. There isn't one to disable the integrated GPU.19:09

jbpickUnderstood.19:18
tomreynhttps://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/78is1r/complete_disable_of_discrete_gpu/ discusses another approach, using ACPI19:18
jbpickI'll give that a read. Great info so far.19:19
jbpickDo we know what the error is saying? Maybe it's just sitting there, as a harmless error19:20

tomreynyou have bios a16 from 05/24/2018 - did you look for a newer one?19:28
jbpickI did try it, but it didn't present an option to disable the intel gpu and it had various mitigations built into it that made it slower19:31
jbpickSo I downgraded19:31
tomreynyou tried and downgraded what?19:31
jbpickI reverted the UEFI BIOS from one version more recent dated 1/2019 to the A16 it's running19:32
tomreyninteresting, since the dell support website only offers A1619:33
jbpickhmmm19:33
jbpickPerhaps the process attempted19:33
jbpickand failed19:33
jbpickBut I also didn't get a brick19:34
tomreynor you really had a newer version and they pulled it. hard to tell.19:34
jbpickUnsure, but good question.19:34
jbpickAnything else that you see in that most recent hyperlink?19:35
tomreynstill reading, it's long, will take another 5-10 minutes19:35
jbpickNo hurry, I'll check around then19:36
tomreynthere are acpi systemio range/opregion address / resource conflicts involving the first PCI graphics chipset (which is probably the intel one). and the firmware claimed it would but effectively did not hand over ASPM control.19:44

tomreyninteresting, zombies consuming cpu19:52
jbpickStill listening Tom, so I could tell it for instance that we're in Windows 7 Pro x6419:52
tomreynjbpick: yes, but start with the latest windows version your firmware knows about, then try the earlier one if that didn't help, etc.19:53
Pluscrafterwhere these processes come from?19:53
tomreynxubuntu97w + xubuntu28w is a specialist in coming up with very specific issues every day, doesn't like to discuss the details.19:54

tomreyninternal version numbers differ from those marketing names, though19:55
tomreynyou'll notice when you list them19:55

jbpickOK, cuz "Windows 2015" looked a little odd19:56
jbpickMaybe that's server 2016?19:56
Pluscrafter jbpick whats the disscussion about19:56
jbpickI want to force a discrete gpu to run in a laptop and axe the integrated. No option in BIOS to do so.19:57
jbpickThere's been like a 5 year kernel bug about it19:58
jbpickAnd yes I'll file a bug report19:58
jbpickThen Tom's here with the possible solution(s.)19:59
Pluscrafterok I'm not so familiar with these topics19:59
jbpickTom's most excellent indeed. I'm just being !patient.20:00
jbpickCould be it just logs that error for all of time with no ill effect (but I doubt it.)20:00
jbpickSo Tom... that's a laundry list. I'm compiling bookmarks and a PDF for the work.20:02
tomreynplease reference bug 1512848 when you file a new one.20:04
ubottubug 1512848 in linux (Ubuntu) "Radeon VCE Init Error" [Undecided,Invalid] https://launchpad.net/bugs/151284820:04
tomreynit'd be good if you could tell what seems to be the impact of the bug, though, since a bug without impact will have very low priority.20:05
tomreyn(it can still be good to file it)20:05
jbpickSwimming a bit, but I think I can do it.20:07
jbpickThe impact is, I know how much faster that GPU is in Windows 720:08
jbpickhehe20:08
jbpicklooks like I could compile a kernel.... without VCE 1.0 support?20:08
tomreynjbpick: easier, you can use !kernelparm radeon.vce=020:09
tomreyn$ modinfo -p radeon | grep -iF vce20:09
tomreynvce:vce enable/disable vce support (1 = enable, 0 = disable) (int)20:09
tomreyn!kernelparm20:09

tomreynuse "ubuntu-bug radeon" to get started20:24
jbpickgotcha20:24
jbpickWell, honestly, either the driver for that discrete card doesn't give me better graphical performance... if I have to live without it, it's sort of a ding (that I don't know where to put lol)20:26
jbpickOr, it does work and we'll try to get some loose documentation together. OK?20:27
tomreynfrom what i understood, the bug you'd like to report is "Low graphics performance on Radeon HD 8730M in AMD/Intel Mars Hybrid Graphics"20:27
jbpickYou're correct. Just making sure we cover everything20:27
jbpickSorry.20:28
jbpickThank you for the assist. Now to see what I can do20:29
tomreynit's entirely possible this performance issue can't be solved without updated firmware and / or drivers. you have a long list of things to try before you should give up on it, though. ;)20:29
jbpickAnd I'm rather dashedly persistent. :D  ttfn, I will do as you have requested20:29
jbpickin regard to your handle on the report20:30
tomreynif even when the intel gpu is blacklisted, the radeon one will not perform better, your goal should probably be to use the intel gpu exclusively instead.20:30
