lubot<SamuelBanya> Lutinmalin: you might have a middle mouse button enabled. Are you on a laptop with a trackpad? I ask because I also run into this same issue at times too.02:57

lubot<heysoundude> How does one check if one is running 18.04.3?  A terminal command?  Uname -r returns 4.15.0-64-generic  … Shouldn’t that be 5- something?16:21
lubot<heysoundude> Or is my machine too old?16:21
tomreynlsb_release -ds16:29
tomreynLSB stands for "Linux Standards Base" (an attempt to create a standard which kind of failed)16:30
lubot<heysoundude> Many thanks!  18.04.3 it is...16:30
tomreynan alternative is to just look at /etc/os-release16:30
lubot<heysoundude> Lsb is probably what I’ll remember.16:31
tomreynabout your kernel version question, 4.15 can be fine. it is the default (general availability, GA) kernel of 18.04 LTS. 18.04.3 installations (but not upgrades) would have introduced a newer kernel version via LTS Enablement (LTSE, previously called Hardeware Enablement, HWE), which you can also choose to switch to.16:33
tomreynLTSE would give you a 5.0 kernel currently.16:35

ph88hey guys, i filed a bug but nobody has looked at it yet. How can i get some attention on my bug report ?21:29
wxlpatience XD21:29
wxlwhat is it?21:29
ph88wxl, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxde-metapackages/+bug/184234621:35
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1842346 in lxde-metapackages (Ubuntu) "Lubuntu 19.04 live cd wont continue to setup/desktop" [Undecided,New]21:35
ph88maybe i put it in the wrong place ?21:35
wxlyep21:35
ph88what's the right place then ?21:35
wxllxde is <18.1021:36
wxlyou're dealing with lxqt21:36
wxlbut this is most likely not a bug21:36
ph88what is it ?21:36
wxlsomething else for sure21:37
wxlfor one, did you check the hashes on the isos?21:37
ph88don't remember if i check them then ... but i can check now again21:37
wxlthat's always step 121:37
ph88what's step 2 ?21:39
ph88wxl, hash checks out21:40
wxlon both of them?21:41
ph88on 19.04 the one that is not booting21:42
wxlyou said they both fail but ok, we'll just focus on 19.0421:43
wxlso you've gone through the entire install process21:43
ph88Ubuntu 19.04 and Lubuntu 18.04 both boot fine to the live CD desktop21:43
wxlwait hold on21:43
wxlso you're saying you can't boot lubuntu 19.04 to live?21:43
ph88yes21:44
wxlyou get a blank screen?21:44
ph88^i get to the boot menu when you pop in the Live CD, then when i select "start live desktop" .. it shows some stuff and then hangs21:45
ph88^wxl, i got d/c there for a second .. last thing you said that i read was: you get a blank screen?21:46
wxlok when it hangs, can you get a virtual terminal?21:47
wxl"hangs" i should say?21:47
ph88^what's a virtual terminal ?21:47
wxl:)21:48
wxlnormally you could hit ctrl-alt-some_f_key to get to a terminal21:48
ph88^i can't send commands from the host to the client if that's what you mean21:48
wxlone of those f keys (usually 7) would be the gui21:48
ph88^ah ok ill try those keys ..21:48
wxlhow would you been sending commands and how would you know it would be receiving them? what vm are we talking about?21:49
wxlon virtualbox they use the host key plus the f key21:49
wxlif you *CAN* get a terminal, it's likely just some graphics issue. you cuold probably add the nomodeset kernel parameter at boot and everything would work fine21:50
wxl!nomodeset21:50
ubottuA common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter21:50
ph88^ok i will try with nomodeset just a moment21:50
wxlif you *CAN'T* get a terminal, well, that's weird.21:51
wxlperhaps it's limited resources or something at that point21:51
ph88^by the way .. the 19.04 version shows a 18.xx splashscreen ... but i'm positive i put in 19.0421:52
wxlyou can run the iso through strings and it should tell you the version21:52
ph88^i don't have the strings program on my system21:53
wxlthis is a linux host?????21:53
ph88^yes21:54
ph88^Linux atomi3 4.4.59+ #24922 SMP PREEMPT Mon Aug 19 12:13:37 CST 2019 x86_64 GNU/Linux synology_apollolake_918+21:54
wxlwell i don't know anything about synology but that's part of binutils in ubuntu so it's standard21:54
ph88^this is what i currently see in the VM  https://imgur.com/a/VPcDRal21:54
ph88^so now i could try that ctrl + alt + F something key ??21:55
wxlalso if the hashes match to 19.04 hashes, you can pretty much guarantee you've got 19.0421:56
wxlbut yes now you can try at that point21:56
ph88^if i press ctrl + alt + F2  i get a login prompt21:56
wxlso login21:56
wxlor don't actually21:57
wxlthat answers the question21:57
wxlthe system boots fine; it's just a graphics issue21:57
ph88^well still i would like the graphics to work ... maybe collect some diagnostics and send it to the developers21:57
ph88^i don't know the password for the Live CD21:57
wxl*nomodeset*21:58
ph88^ah i got the password .. just blank21:58
wxlit's remarkable that it doesn't just work as ubuntu should be the same core21:58
ph88^yes21:59
ph88^is this https://github.com/lxqt/lxqt/issues the right place to file a bug report ?21:59
wxlno way21:59
wxldo not under any circumstances go file anything upstream21:59
ph88^ok what can i do then ?22:00
wxlfirst, figure out how to fix it22:01
wxlso go try nomodeset22:01
ph88^i just booted with nomodeset ..22:01
ph88^this image i showed you is with nomodeset turned on  https://imgur.com/a/VPcDRal22:02
wxland it worked or not?22:02
ph88^it just hangs there22:03
wxlok so that's not the fix22:03
lubot<SamuelBanya> ph88^: Have you been able to run different Linux isos within Synology before this attempt?22:03
ph88^i can try again and put a stopwatch next to it ... see if it eventually boots ... but i vaguely remember that last time i waited over 30 minutes22:03
wxlthere's a bunch of other options in the boot screen for different video-related switches22:03
wxlyou can try going through all those22:03
ph88^lubot, Ubuntu 19.04 and Lubuntu 18.04 both boot fine to the live CD desktop22:04
ph88^wxl, what makes you say it's a video problem ?22:04
wxlif they fail, then log into the virtual terminal and look through /var/log/Xorg.0.log for errors (they're marked with EE) and that ought to give some hints as to what the problem is22:04
wxlph88^: because you have a perfectly booting system that otherwise doesn't show graphics. go log into the virtual terminal and run `top` and see if the CPU is pegging or the memory is exhausted. look at your load averages. if they're close to 0, then you're doing pretty good. barring any problems there, you're not hung22:06
ph88^CPU & MEM usage is low22:07
ph88^wxl, i don't see a Xorg log file22:09
ph88^maybe the log file is not there because i booted with nomodeset .. maybe i should attempt a normal boot again22:11
ph88^19.04 has 18.10 bootscreen22:13
lubot<kc2bez> The boot screen doesn't show the version number.22:14
ph88^kc2bez, it's the live cd bootscreen22:17
ph88^what about that error EDAC pnd2: Failed to register device with error -19  ??22:24
kc2bezHere is a link to a video of the live boot on KVM https://share.riseup.net/#i5jqK1EQdPJnCoYjuO2irQ22:31
kc2bezThe EDAC error is a filesystem error.22:33
lubotTux41 was added by: Tux4122:49
ph88^kc2bez, what makes you say it's a filesystem error ??22:50
lubot<Tux41> Hey guys, I've posted it in the forum, but someone might help me here, a few questions: … 1) I’m using two languages on my keyboard. How do I change the keyboard to toggle between them? I’ve tried to change it in the setting, and it didn’t seem to change anything. How can I configure left Shift + left Alt to change input? … 2)How do I a22:53
lubotdd shortcuts to quicklaunch? Drag and drop didn’t seem to work. … 3) in Ubuntu (and Windows 😜), When you drag a window to the corner of the screen, it opens up on helf of the screen. Can you do it in Lxqt?22:53
kc2bezph88^: i saw a forum post that suggested that but I also found another that indicates it could be a BIOS issue.22:54
ph88^kc2bez, do you have links to those pages ?22:54
kc2bezlet me switch to my laptop. I still have one open.22:55
ph88^oki22:55
ph88^btw where is the lubot chat coming from ?22:55
kc2bezlubot is our bridge to the Telegram channel.22:56
kc2bezHere is the post that indicates it may be a BIOS issue: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1168611/issues-with-edac-filesystem-remounts-as-read-only22:57
ph88^kc2bez, that error has error code -22   i have  -1922:59
kc2bezYeah, I am not sure what the difference is.22:59
wxlph88^: could you pastebin /var/log/syslog and /var/log/dmesg?23:03
ph88^i remember there was a command to do that ... paste to pastebin directly from the terminal23:04
ph88^i forgot it though23:04
wxl!info pastebinit23:04
kc2bez`pastebinit`23:04
ubottupastebinit (source: pastebinit): command-line pastebin client. In component main, is optional. Version 1.5-2 (bionic), package size 14 kB, installed size 156 kB23:04
kc2bezjinx:)23:04
ph88^i think i used this one before .. just a moment https://termbin.com/23:05
wxlthat's a thing too23:06
wxlbtw edac is memory related. you might want to run a memtest.23:06
