Guest_55hey, anyone here?05:11
Guest_55I was wondering...05:11
Guest_55in a plain xubuntu install05:11
Guest_55is there any compiler?05:11
Guest_55i tried g++ and gcc without success05:11
Unit193You can install build-essential05:12
Guest_55I know...05:12
Guest_55But I was wondering...05:12
Guest_55nothing without installing?05:12
Unit193IIRC, no.05:13
Guest_55IIRC?05:13
Guest_55ok05:13
Guest_55if I recall correctly, sorry...05:13
Guest_55the javascript console?05:14
Guest_55Does that count as a compiler?05:14
Guest_55there is also the python interpreter...05:15
Guest_55It sounds strange to me that there is no c compiler...05:15
Guest_55Should be strange also that git is not installed...05:16
Guest_55I mean05:16
Guest_55why?05:16
Unit193Precisely: Why?  This is a binary distribution, a lot of users simply have no need for a C compiler.05:16
Guest_55there is python, there is javascript05:16
Guest_55I was just experimenting with an offline virtual machine05:17
Guest_55I assumed that in order to update it had to compile something sometimes...05:17
Guest_55I guess that it gets only binaries then...05:17
Unit193Those are interpreted languages, not compiled.05:18
Guest_55true, but still higher level than c05:19
Guest_55I assumed that in a 1.5 gigabytes of image somehow git and gcc could fit...05:20
Guest_55and vim maybe...05:20
Guest_55WAIT WAIT WAIT05:29
Guest_55gdb is there?!05:29
Guest_55Why do you have a debugger without a compiler?05:29
Guest_55That's SOOOO wrong!05:30
Guest_55There must be an hidden c compiler somewhere05:30
Guest_55Really?!?05:38
Guest_55Am I the only one asking this question?05:38
Guest_55Unit193, you lied to me!05:50
Guest_55There is a compiler05:50
Guest_55is just not aliased05:50
Guest_55and completely muted05:50
Guest_55it is in /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/7.4.0 under the name cc105:51
Guest_55Thank you for misleading me05:51
Guest_55very helpful community!05:51
nikolamI again have problem with displaying audio volume notification, after changing volume level in upper right corner05:57
nikolamDisplaying notification interferes with changing volume level after I just changed, notification is displayed over the volume and I can't change volume until notification closes05:57
nikolamsolution would be to move notification displaying position not to display over the volume i am trying to set, or to turn it down05:58
Unit193I use scroller over the icon, not that it's a solution.05:59
nikolamIt interferes by default, that is asking to be changed.05:59
furycd001HI guys.. Have a problem with Suspend not working on my fully up-to-date Xubuntu 18.04.3 system.15:00
furycd001In power manager I have the system set to suspend whenever the lid is closed. Be it on battery or charger. Whenever I open the lid the laptop powers back up, but the screen on stays black.15:00
furycd001I can "CTRL+ALT+F1", login & then do "sudo service lightdm restart" to get back into my desktop on tty7.15:01
furycd001How can I fix this so that suspend just works and that I don't have to keep restarting with that command. Many thanks in advanced for commenting and helping....15:01
Spasshello furycd001, solution for that problem is to disable screen locking completely or change light-locker to something else, like gnome-screensaver or xscreensaver15:09
Spasslight-locker causes some issues on bionic unfortunately, but fortunately it will be changed to xfce4-screensaver in the new Xubuntu releases15:10
furycd001In power manager I can switch suspend to lock screen and that works but it uses up my battery. Is my best solution to install xscreensaver ??15:13
Spassworth trying, it worked for me (light-locker was failing, xscreensaver and gnome-screensaver work fine)15:14
furycd001Ok thank you for the help :)15:15
Spassright now I'm on xfce4-screensaver from PPA and it also works good, so… yeah, light-locker is the bionic's weak link15:16
furycd001Guess I'll switch away from it now then.15:17

sublevelLooking for a way to disable the alt+number change tabs shortcut in xfce4-terminal (because I want it to be sent to my irc client, weechat).   Any suggestions?  I'm on 18.0418:07
sublevelFound an answer https://docs.xfce.org/apps/terminal/start   - just need to test if it persists across reboots18:23
remlinesublevel, nice -- good find18:25
sublevelAnother question:  I get a blank screen after waking from suspend on a thinkpad t450. If I enter my password it comes on. Websearch turned up various suggestions to fix - is there a known best method?18:25
Spasssublevel, it will be a capy/paste from what I wrote not so long ago on this channel, but it seems to be the same problem18:46
Spasspossible solution for that problem is to disable screen locking completely or change light-locker to something else, like gnome-screensaver or xscreensaver18:46
sublevelSpass: thanks.  I may give this a try also  https://github.com/the-cavalry/light-locker/issues/10818:48
sublevelSpass: github messed with my address bar, specifically this part:  https://github.com/the-cavalry/light-locker/issues/108#issuecomment-50240455218:58
Spasssublevel, thanks for the link, good to know18:59
sublevelit's for 19.04 but may help me on 18.04 too18:59
sublevelMade that change to logind.conf and rebooted, far as I can tell it hasn't made a differen. I think I'll just live with it for now20:20
brainwashsublevel: is that an intel gpu and is20:28
brainwashxorg-server-hwe-18.04 installed?20:28
sublevelbrainwash: intel yes.  apt list --installed does not mention that package20:33
brainwashsublevel: it only shows xorg-server which should be a version 1.19.x, correct?20:37
