Regorwhats the usage of "Mail reader" ? i already purged thunderbird(and some default apps) after installation . i use only neomutt .06:30
diogenes_Regor, afaik mail reader is just a frontend where you can specify what is your fav mail client (same as 'web browser').07:00
Regoryeah i got it 😀️07:13
EvaristeGaloisCareful when removing mail reader through 'Software'13:42
EvaristeGaloisDoing that deleted my xubuntu desktop environment more than once13:43
EvaristeGaloisRegor:13:43
DarkTrick(A) How do I manage to get a coredump of a custom application?  (xubuntu 19) ulimit doesn't seem to help, stopping apport doesn't seem to help.14:08
Regorthere is no " software"  fortunately ! i purged all default crap(thunderbird,parole,atril,software,packgekit.....etc)   ! 😀.  i love apt/synaptic . whats the package name of " mail reader " ? EvaristeGalois14:20
DarkTricksolved: create ~/.config/apport/settings with [main]\nunpackaged=true and ulimit -c unlimited did it.14:21
GridCubeif you didn't want any of those things why didn't you just installed xubuntu-core?14:21
GridCubeinstead of uninstalling stuff14:21
EvaristeGaloisRegor: haven't looked for it yet, I just keep it installed as it is not taking resources anyway14:22
EvaristeGaloisand Synaptic Package Manager is great indeed14:22
EvaristeGaloisGridCube: There is such a thing as xubuntu-core?14:23
Regoryeah..i am not touching it .14:23
GridCube!package xubuntu-core14:24

GridCubehttps://packages.ubuntu.com/disco/xubuntu-core14:25
GridCubeapparently there isn't one for 19.10?14:26

ubottuxubuntu-core (source: xubuntu-meta): Xubuntu core system. In component universe, is optional. Version 2.225 (bionic), package size 3 kB, installed size 29 kB14:27
Regorthats cool 😁️14:28
EvaristeGaloisOh I had something else in mind, like an ISO file which could be run on a live usb14:28
Regori thought similar !14:28
GridCubeall iso files can be run live from usb14:29
EvaristeGaloisbut xubuntu-core is not that, I'd have no idea how to clean install xubuntu with that package alone14:30
RegorEvaristeGalois: you dont check live session ?14:30
Regorspecially drivers may be mess in new laptops..14:31
GridCubeEvaristeGalois: https://xubuntu.org/news/introducing-xubuntu-core/14:32
EvaristeGaloisOh goodie, thanks GridCube14:34
RegorGridCube: thanks 👍️14:35

xubuntu23wi notice some strange behaviour on xubuntu 19.10. After i activated "Autologin" for my only and default user, everytime after boot the login dialog still appears but without an input field. i can still press the login button, and can work properly after taht. but i dont know how to fix that ?!?? is this a bug ??20:00
diogenes_xubuntu23w, upgrade or fresh install?20:02
xubuntu23wfresh install20:02
diogenes_preserved /home from previous installations?20:03
xubuntu23wnope. totally wiped disk20:03
xubuntu23wbut i also a a crash report after boot20:03
xubuntu23wi send it twice.20:03
xubuntu23wits a crash about xorg stuff20:04
xubuntu23wusing nvidia 340 drivers - its an old zotac with neon chipset20:04
diogenes_so you ticked autologin in the installer but since the first boot you see the login manager or it started to appear after installing nvidia drivers?20:06
xubuntu23wi would swear i ticked autologin during install. but the login prompt still appeared. after that i manuall set autologin for the account. than this happened20:07
xubuntu23wthe nvidia driver could be invvoled as i directly after first boot set the driver.20:08
xubuntu23wbut im not totally sure if the login prompt problem was immediately there20:08
diogenes_how you set manually?20:08
xubuntu23wby goin into settings->users and groups. and the press the 3rd field20:09
xubuntu23w"change ..."20:10
diogenes_run: ls /etc/lightdm | nc termbin.com 999920:10
diogenes_share the link.20:10
xubuntu23wmoment .. will take some thime to do that20:10
diogenes_ok20:10
xubuntu23wits another machine20:11
diogenes_np20:11
xubuntu23where im back again with the following result20:15
xubuntu23whttps://termbin.com/ww1220:15
xubuntu23wwhatever that is ??20:15
xubuntu23wdiogenes_ ? r u there ?20:23
diogenes_now run: grep "autologin" -r /etc/lightdm/* | nc termbin.com 999920:23
diogenes_same thing paste here.20:23
xubuntu23wmoment20:23
xubuntu23where is the result:20:27
xubuntu23whttps://termbin.com/39ki20:27
diogenes_xubuntu23w, and now run: whoami20:28
diogenes_and just write into the chat20:28
xubuntu23wwhoami gives "xubuntu" whic is the corrent username20:28
diogenes_ok, do you hava any encrypted drives?20:29
xubuntu23wnope20:30
xubuntu23wthe only thing nonstandard is a virtualbox 6.14 installaltion from regular repo20:30
xubuntu23wor 6.0.14 it is20:31
diogenes_then the only thing i could think of, is if we can narrow it down to the graphics driver, if the system boots fine without the nvidia proprietary driver then that's it, you can run it off of the usb live session and see if it boots fine.20:31
xubuntu23wwell in order to get the xubuntu installation going i had to install the system in another minipc i have. i selected the nuveau drivers, then i moved the disk to the current box. the dvd did not wanted to boot otherwise20:33
xubuntu23wthen on the zotac i set the drivers.20:34
xubuntu23wits runs well otherwise20:34
xubuntu23wyes. its sounds terrible, i know20:35
diogenes_when you boot the live system you don't select nouveau drivers because they are default.20:36
xubuntu23wyes but the live system dont want to boot at all on the zotac box20:36
xubuntu23wthe bios of this thing is terrible20:36
xubuntu23wwell the other machine had antoher nvida chpset .. a newer one20:38
diogenes_then see if you can update the bios.20:38
xubuntu23wcant.20:38
xubuntu23wtoo old20:38
xubuntu23w:(20:38
xubuntu23wthere never was another20:39
xubuntu23walready checked20:39
xubuntu23wbut ok. man thanks for your effort. i hope during the usual updates for this xubuntu relase thins will be ironed out20:39
xubuntu23wso far the box works otherwise20:40
diogenes_at least it boots and works and that's good.20:40
xubuntu23wdigones, youre my man. thanky for your friendly support.20:40
xubuntu23wbye20:40

sublevelAnyone recommend a GUI text editor that can extract regex matches? I use geany but its search results include the filename, line number and full line - I just want the part that matches the regex20:48
sublevel(I can do it with cli tools but sometimes gui is more convenient)20:48
lastebill1hi, I just did a clean install of xubuntu.  I changed from stock ubuntu because standby modus seem to work, unlike on stock ubuntu.  However, there's a (minor) issue.  When I close the lid and reopen it, the screen is always black.  I need to close and open it again to activate the screen.  Is this a known issue?21:19
lastebill1is there an easy way to increase the size of the menues and such without decreasing the resolution?21:44
mat88@lastebill1, in appearence settings in the font tab, you can set the DPI or the font size21:51
mat88Don't know if it is what you are looking for21:51
kadiroMy problem stay insolved, I don't know if i will change xubuntu with something else21:53
tomreynyou don't expect people to know what "my problem" is, do you?21:55
lastebill1mat88 thanks, now I can actually see what's going on!21:55
lastebill1mat88 sucks getting older with poorer eye sight...21:56
mat88@lastebill1, Happy to help21:56
kadiroI asked many times but none had a clue on what caused it, it was the gaps between the boot message and lightdm session to show up, just a black screen for about 30 sec21:56
kadiroIn debian it is fast as hell21:57
kadiroI even removed many useless services21:57
sublevelI tweaked font size too but mainly due to 1080p on a 14" laptop21:57
lastebill1sublevel seeing what's going on is just such a benefit21:58
kadiroservices that i removed: snapd, woopsie, disabled motd thing and may be others21:59
kadirothats the problem22:00
lastebill1kadiro I'll have to look into that and see what services I don't need.22:01
kadirobug from 2013 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1129157 and they still don't know what caused it or even what was the solution22:06
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1124330 in The Ubuntu Boot Speed Project "duplicate for #1129157 [raring] Latest whoopsie 0.2.13 slows down boot process by 29 seconds!" [Undecided,New]22:06
lastebill1seems like the screensaver was causing the issue actually, after disabling it, no more black screen after shutting and opening the lid22:11
kadiroI removed it my self22:12
Unit193light-locker?  It's been known to have some issues, I'd prefer xscreensaver or xfce4-screensaver.22:20
