blakkheimdoes the mini.iso support uefi or no? i see an open bug report about it not, but the file itself contains boot/grub/efi.img and the installer has an option to create an EFI system partition00:00
tomreynflog: the general architecture is supported fine for a while now, but you may want the newer kernel if you're on zen 200:01
tomreynblakkheim: so far my understanding is that it doesn't boot on uefi, but it should be easy to test. which one do you intend to use?00:03
flogtomreyn: ryzen 3700. I think that is zen 200:03
tomreynit is00:03
blakkheimtomreyn: i'm using the 19.10 mini.iso file with an efi system. the cd boots and the install completes, but it doesn't boot after that00:05
tomreynblakkheim: hmm, do you still have the url of the bug report you found?00:05
blakkheimtomreyn: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debian-installer/+bug/142903000:06
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1429030 in debian-installer (Ubuntu) "netboot mini.iso doesn't support UEFI boot" [High,Triaged]00:06
tomreynhmm, nothing conclusive is stated there00:08
tomreynso, since your experience is that it would not boot like this, i guess the next best option is to try another installer00:08
tomreynblakkheim: you may also need to disable AHCI / NVME "RAID" mode in bios, setting it to "SATA", i think00:10
blakkheimunfortunately this system is using open firmware/coreboot so there are no nice bios options00:11
tomreyni would not consider this unfortunate00:11
blakkheimneither would i if my os would boot00:11
tomreynyou may need to get a bit of support from the vendor if you tried the standard installation and this wouldn't boot either00:12
flogtomreyn: so im currently on 5.0.0-36-generic. apt search linux-image-genereci returns 5.0.0.36.38 as installed. This is after apt update. So i guess im on the latest kernel on 19.0400:12
tomreynflog: good. did you do the usb installer boot test?00:14
flogtomreyn: have not done that yet. But what baffles me is that i managed to mount my phone over usb once. So usb must have been working.00:15
flogLet me reboot and try again.00:16
tomreynthis returns the running kernels' patch level:   cat /proc/version | grep -o '#...'00:17
tomreynor maybe this is better    cat /proc/version | grep -o '#[0-9]*'00:18
tomreynor just    grep -o '#[0-9]*' /proc/version00:19
flogtomreyn: booted the usb stick with ubuntu installer. dmesg shows usb devices when i plug/unplug my second usb stick.00:28
flogSo my installation has gotten messed up.00:29
sarnoldis that a live session that you could install mtp-tools or jmtpfs packages into and see if your usb is then busted?00:30
flogDefudge, booted my machine normally(no live distro), dmesg reports usb devices when i plug them in.00:30
flogSo it seems like uninstalling jmtpfs and mtp-tools and rebooting MULTIPLE times needed to get usb back.00:31
flogsarnold: guess i need to boot a live session again and try to break usb with installing mtp-tools and jmtpfs there.00:37
tomreynsarnold: hmm so maybe you were right all along. i couldn't imagine it since there was nothing on dmesg at all when flog was attaching usb devices earlier00:38
flogDont like "fixes" like this one :p00:39
sarnoldtomreyn: that's what made me wonder if the mtp-tools package "flipped" the usb port around a bit or something similar and now it's not a usb host but now usb client or who knows what, it's all very confusing ;)00:39
flogIt is too much of a wintendo solution, "Have you tried turning it off and on again?"00:40
tomreynsarnold: i guess this must be what has happened then, yes. jmtpfs "was specifically designed for exchanging files between Linux (and Mac OS X) systems and newer Android devices that support MTP but not USB Mass Storage"00:42
tomreynso maybe mass storage functionality is dropped in favor of mtp ;)00:43
sarnoldI fully expect these programs to have some way to reverse what they've done without rebooting00:43
sarnoldbut I don't know these programs :)00:43
tomreynjmtpfs is a fuse FS, so, yes, it should. i don't think mtp-tools would cause mass storage devices to break, it's user space utils which can use libmtp.00:46
tomreynflog: the assumption is now that it worked originally, and then some user made some changes. ;)00:47
flogtomreyn: but if mass storage functionallity was dropped in favour for mtp why wouldnt dmesg list my phone either?00:50
tomreynflog: i couldn't tell really, it's just theories.00:50
flogMaybe there is a better way to transfere files from my phone.00:51
flogBut i thought that mtp was the way to do it.00:51
flogWhat do you guys use?00:52
sarnoldI haven't moved files around on phones 'by hand' for half-dozen years or more.. if i had to do it today I'd probably try to find a nextcloud client and set up a nextcloud server; or maybe some google-drive tools on my computer to suck things off google drive00:53
tomreynadb also works. but i think libmtp and a graphical file browser can also work, but i'm not the most experienced person with it00:54
sarnoldoh yeah I did adb with the ubuntu phone way back when..00:55
flogI cant rely on using cloud services. I dont have the bandwidth at work to use cloud services.00:56
tomreynnextcloud is something you'd host yourself00:57
flogLocally?00:57
tomreyncan be00:57
flogIll look into it.00:58
sarnoldlooks like the phone clients may be beta https://nextcloud.com/install/#install-clients00:59
sarnold4.1 stars with 4k reviews, the histogram looks reasonable enough https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nextcloud.client00:59
flogI cant download 100MB at work though :/01:00
flogThatll kill the internet for everyone else.01:00
tomreynhttps://search.f-droid.org/?q=nextcloud01:01
flogSomething to look into when i get home.01:02
sarnold  stable:       16.0.5snap3              2019-10-25 (16739) 221MB -01:02
sarnoldif I'm understanding this output correctly it's a bit more than 100..01:03
flogsarnold: 1Mbit satellite connection shared by 50+ people. used both for work and wellfare.01:03
sarnoldyeah that's 100% not going to go over well01:04
flogNope.01:04
sarnoldusb cable makes a ton more sense now :)01:04
floghaha.01:04
sarnoldnextcloud may still make sense for you, but *getting* it isn't going to be great01:04
flogIll check it out when i get back home to my 250/250Mbit fiber :p01:05
sarnoldI'm curious, how far is work from home? that's a pretty staggering difference01:05
flogsarnold: offshore vessel. this time im across the atlantic.01:06
sarnoldflog: thanks for indulging my curiosity :)01:07
flogUsually back in europe i could tether if i get close enough to get cellphone service.01:07
flogClose enough to land.01:08
flogEnough off-topic though.01:08
flogNext issue! Want to change the tray icon for nm-applet. Its way to dark to use on a dark background. Using i3.01:16
sarnoldthis shows a bunch of the images use with nm-applet dpkg -L network-manager-gnome01:18
sarnoldthere may be ways to change the theme in use but I've never tried changing gnome these01:19
sarnolds/these/themes/01:19
flogvim user spotted ;)01:19
tioxHad someone made a sane package for libpng12-0:i386 (and :amd64) for use on Ubuntu 19.04 and up yet?01:20
tioxI keeep getting a stupid conflict that's not solvable through apt's usual procedures when installing the package for Xenial, which worked up to Disco.01:21
tioxUp to Cosmic rather. On Disco and up it fails to install.01:21
tioxI assume it's because of libpng16-16 throwing a wrench in the works unintentionally.01:21
flogsarnold: i would have thought i could use gnome-tweak-tool for it. but it only seems to provide some customization.01:22
sarnoldflog: I have no idea who this user is, or if he should be trusted with root on your computer, but it looks promising https://launchpad.net/~jonathonf/+archive/ubuntu/libpng1201:24
tioxOh turns out I don't need libpng12-0 to run zsnes but I wonder now; the software was complaining about this software lacking, but now it works without? tf?01:37
Ben64tiox: https://packages.ubuntu.com/disco/zsnes01:39
Ben64says right there it needs libpng1601:39
sarnoldoh bother I didn't notice that flog != tiox01:39
sarnoldeveryone should have a different length nickname to avoid this problem :)01:40
flogsarnold: no worries :p01:40
Ben64sarnold: my client colors nicks based on magic01:40
sarnoldBen64: yeah that would have helped me more than once :)01:40
Ben64but occasionally people have the same length and color and i'm just lost01:40
sarnoldBen64: "investigat weechat" has been on my todo list for ten years though01:40
Ben64i'm on hexchat01:41
sarnoldah that's never been on ny todo list :) heh01:41
flogsarnold: think i found the tool i wanted to use. lxappearance01:42
sarnoldflog: that works for nm-applet?01:43
sarnoldthe screenshot on lxde.org looks nice enough though :)01:43
sarnoldoh wow that'sfrom 2008.01:43
flogDont know yet but i remembered it had more options than gnome-tweaks01:43
flogNope no settings for tray icons.01:44
sarnoldflog: this looks promising https://askubuntu.com/questions/15240/how-to-change-the-icon-for-network-monitor-applet01:47
flogsarnold: stumbled over that one already. But ill check it again.01:49
flogI usually like to use a ui to configure fonts and themes since those settings usually points to multiple resources. But if there is no other way than doing it manually then i ll just have to do that .01:50
brandonkalI have a long Dockerfile with the usual `RUN apt upgrade && apt install a \ b \ c \ ... \ dep150` What is the best way to take this list and check each requested package exists before download and install? It's not pleasant for it to error out after a long build process because of a typo several lines down. Thanks.01:54
sarnoldin what cases would a package be listed but not be available?01:55
tomreynbrandonkal: i suspect it's supposed to say "RUN apt upDATe && ..."01:59
ZeitkindQ: alt-key + mouseclick on the desktop (= any unused area where no window of any app is) on a Mac let the app in front/focus get hidden. I'm so f** used to this - how can I get this on Ubuntu?02:01
sarnoldtomreyn: heh nice spot02:08
tomreyn:) it could explain why packages aren't installable02:09
sarnoldZeitkind: that feels like the sort of thing that ought to be easy for the right person to write an extension for gnome-shell to do.. alas I don't know who that person is or if it already exists02:12
sarnoldthere's a huge list of gnome extensions on https://extensions.gnome.org/# but 'desktop' and 'click' are way too broad.. heh02:13
Zeitkindif you ever get used to stuff..02:14
Zeitkindlike the meta key.. took me ages..02:14
sarnoldheh isn't that the truth02:15
flogWhohoo managed to change tray icon with lxapperance02:17
sarnoldsweet02:17
flogSeems like nm-applet inherits the icon from the icon pack and its just that the icon in the moka icon back is useless on a dark background.02:18
flogDoes not fit with the colortheme im using.02:18
ajvermillionHey, whoever told me my problem was hardware earlier when I was convinced otherwise, it looks like you were right02:29
ajvermillionI took the laptop apart, set it under a fan, reassembled it (making sure everything was connected firmly), and I can't get the error again02:30
ajvermillionOn the other hand, you owe me the screw I lost to oblivion02:31

flogNot really peak hours right now.04:13
Hellz_Bellzflog, I was lamenting that discord has taken over and nobody uses IRC anymore... freaking x<25 age group hardly even knows it exists!04:13
flogDiscord or slack i guess. Still like irc better.04:14
Hellz_BellzIIRC, #ubuntu was ALWAYS too fast to pay attention04:14
Hellz_Bellzcant use discord in the terminal when youre working lol04:14

tomreynHellz_Bellz: just use what ubuntu-drivers suggests / installs. if this doesn't seem to work, there's a "graphics-drivers" PPA04:37
Hellz_Bellzohhh it has listed GPU in the doc folders!04:38
Hellz_Bellzi was reading the entries for info and it had a link to the docs !04:38
Hellz_Bellzdarnit... have to install it first!04:42
tomreynoh, actually we don't support mint here04:43
brandonkaltomreyn, yes it is update. Typo in irc04:44
Hellz_Bellzi was just asking if the packages are the same name or if someone had experience with NVIDIA or the card in general04:45
Hellz_BellzI have the proprietary drivers but cannot find the unit designation of the linux onies and as far as im aware tyhey SHOUILD be named the same04:46
Hellz_Bellzand i hate my fingers04:46
Ben64Hellz_Bellz: you'll have to go to the mint channel for mint support04:46
Hellz_Bellzthey are not open apparently04:46
Ben64!mint04:47
ubottuThe Ubuntu channels can only provide support for Ubuntu and its official flavors, since other distributions and derivatives have repository and software changes. So please use their dedicated support venues, for example: Linux Mint (#linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org), Kali Linux (#kali-linux), and LXLE (#lxle)04:47
Ben64it's on another server, irc.spotchat.org04:47
Hellz_Bellzat least the one in the post on the forum called the official channel04:47
tomreynyou can always install ubuntu and get support here04:47
Ben64or get support in ##linux04:47
Ben64but since this is ##ubuntu, we only deal with Ubuntu04:47
Ben64#ubuntu *04:47
Hellz_Bellzwhats the package for ubuntu called for the gtx 1660 driver?04:48
gryHellz_Bellz: what is the official channel?04:48

Hellz_Bellz#linuxmint-help on spotchat04:48
Hellz_Bellzwhat exactly am i doing?04:48
Ben64trying to dodge the rules04:48
Ben64the channel is open, I just joined, there's 200+ people there04:49
Hellz_Bellzanswer the questioon please04:49
Ben64you need to go to the mint channel or the generic linux channel04:49
flogIts like asking the vet to do a health checkup on a human.04:49
Ben64or anywhere else, really04:49
brandonkalSo I asked earlier, but is there a clean way to check if a list of packages can be installed before installing?04:49
Hellz_Bellzi hate humans so fucking much04:49
Ben64cool04:50
Ben64brandonkal: huh? what list04:50
flogWas i too harsh?04:50
Ben64flog: no04:50
flogThought it was a fiting annology.04:50
Ben64yeah not bad04:50
tomreynbrandonkal: after   apt update   you can check availability using    apt policy <package1> <package2> <...>04:51
brandonkalBen64 this list specifically: https://github.com/brandonkal/docker-polyglot/blob/master/base/Dockerfile04:53
brandonkalapt policy could work though it is a bit noisy. I'll give it a try.04:53
tomreynline 6 would probably cause the remaining package son the saem line to be ignored04:58
Ben64there's a dry run option you could probably do and get a code from at the end04:59

kab0mspaceghost no "archives", textfiles...your apt sources are located in "/etc/apt/sources.list" and "/etc/apt/sources.list.d/" chec every list file in there with nano and look for OLD repositories from artful etc.08:59
kab0mspaceghost is this a fresh installed kde neon or did you update from a older version?08:59
spaceghostFresh, i added a stupid ppa to install brave browser, that is the origin of the problem.09:00
kab0mspaceghost it does not look like the single ppa was you only problem ;) cause virtualbox is complaining about wrong architecture too.09:01

spaceghostThank you.09:11
kab0mspaceghost do you have virtualbox installed?09:14
spaceghostYes.09:14
spaceghostI commented the ppa just in case but i found a way to fix that error.09:14
kab0mspaceghost how did you install virtualbox and what is you model of your CPU?09:14

kab0m*the model of your cpu09:15
kab0mspaceghost no like intel i7-7700k or something like that09:15
spaceghostIt is i5, 3rd generation i think.09:15
kab0mspaceghost so you are sure its a 64bit cpu right?09:15
spaceghostYes.09:16
spaceghostAs part of Lenovo's 2012 lineup, the X230 uses Intel's third generation Core ix CPU as expected. Our specific model on hand uses the new 2.6GHz Core i5-3320M, but users can upgrade to a 2.8GHz Core i5-3360M or a 2.9GHz i7-3520M or even downgrade to a 2.4GHz Sandy Bridge i3-2370M if need be.09:16

oxekwhere do I configure whether a user is allowed to mount a removable usb stick without root privileges?14:02
oxekcurrently, when a usb flashdrive is inserted, icon appears on desktop but clicking it produces an arror, not even a popup asking for root privileges14:02
OerHeksoxek, looks like there is an error on that usb device, perform a fsck perhaps?14:04
OerHeksor partebion the error would be helpfull14:05
oxekOerHeks: everything works if I mount it using `sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt`14:05
OerHeksoke, that is helpfull too14:06
OerHeksseems like you(r user) do not own the data14:06
oxekthe error is "Failed to mount "USBSTICK" Not authorized to perform operation"14:06
OerHekschown ( change owner) would fix that14:07
oxekit is a fat32 filesystem, there are no permissions14:07
oxekit's a standard usb flashdrive14:07
oxekhappens with every usb flashdrive I own14:07
OerHeksoh fat32, certainly it contains errors,. that prevents mounting as non-root14:07
oxekbtw it does not happen on another machine with the same usb stick14:07
OerHekshttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/FilesystemTroubleshooting14:08
oxekon the other machine, I just put the stick in, and double click icon on desktop, and it opens in file browser14:08
OerHeksand is that other system linux?14:08
oxekyes14:08
oxekubuntu as well14:08
OerHekshow odd, perform a fsck to be sure it is not a bad filesystem14:08
pragmaticenigmaoxek: Also, the GUI mounts using udiskctl instead of "sudo mount". udiskctl handles mounting the device automatically into the /media/{user}/{device_label} with permissions for the current user.14:08
oxekpragmaticenigma: `udisksctl mount -b /dev/sdc1` pops up a GUI asking for root password, and when I enter the root password it successfully mounts it14:09

OerHekshttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/FilesystemTroubleshooting14:10
sliptteesehhehehehe14:11
pragmaticenigmaoxek: Have you made changes to the permissions settings of your installation? By default, the GUI uses udiskctl and by default it does not require the currently logged in user to provide their password to mount14:11
oxekOerHeks: I just `dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc` then fdisk to create partition, then mkfs.vfat to create filesystem on that drive, and same error happens14:11
oxekthe drive is fine14:11
oxekthe filesystem is fine as well14:11
oxekit is just some configuration somewhere14:11
OerHeksi think that drive is bad.14:11
oxekOerHeks: every single usb stick I have? When it works flawlessly on another ubuntu machine, and in livecd enviroment on the same machine?14:12
oxekpragmaticenigma: I don't think I've made any permissions settings. My user is member of the sudo group if that matters.14:13
sliptteesioria pastebin.com/dMjzPdFu14:13
oxekwhere would I check the permissions?14:13
oxekthat's what I am probably looking for14:13
oxekthere are many reports online of "Failed to mount "..." Not authorized to perform operation" but with no solutions14:15
pragmatic_enigmaoxek: Have you ever made any changes to the sudoers file or any other permissions based settings on your machine?14:16
sliptteesioria thanks for patiente and help.14:16
OerHeksthere is no simple setting to allow/prevent an user mounting fat32..14:16
oxekpragmatic_enigma: `sudo md5sum /etc/sudoers` gives the same hash for the sudoers file on both machines14:18
oxekI have not made any changes to that file14:18
TolhsadumHi y'all! I've got a really weird problem. Someone installed some security thing from DevSec Ubuntu baseline something and it basically broke my grub. After that, I was unable to boot with any option in the grub (even recovery). I tried to boot-repair and it failed and gave me this report: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/thHzYY3ZMF/   eventually I14:18
Tolhsadumdecided to reinstall Ubuntu 18.04 from scratch but after the first reboot, I had the same problem -__-14:18
oxekOerHeks: then I am looking for the more complicated setting14:19
pragmatic_enigmaTolhsadum: I suggest you seek out that person that helped you for instructions on how to undo those changes14:19
TolhsadumHe doesn't know xD14:20
oxekpragmatic_enigma: where are some other permission-based settings? I have not made any changes, but want to compare the working machine with the broken one.14:21
oxeksudoers is the same14:21
oxekgroup membership is the same14:21
pragmatic_enigmaTolhsadum: Try a BIOS factory reset... if the problem persists after a reinstall, it's not the operating system14:22
TolhsadumOh yeah good idea, thanks!14:23
pragmatic_enigmaTolhsadum: If that doesn't work, it's possible something is logged in the UEFI/EFI (?) registry. That is something I'm unfamiliar with unfortunately. My general practice is to not let friends help with my computers, but rather send me their sources for their ideas so I can undo it later14:25
oxekI also don't see any error in dmesg, and lsblk correctly shows the device and the partition without requiring root14:27
TolhsadumI usually do the same but he is supposed to be the engineer of our team and is supposed to admin our computers. So I cannot really prevent him from having his hands on my computer :p14:27
pragmatic_enigmaTolhsadum: ah, I see... sounds like someone needs some retraining14:28
=== pragmatic_enigma is now known as pragmaticenigma
pragmaticenigmaoxek: I'm kind of out of ideas. I know that udiskctl is a good place to start your search to find a solution. As to why it's requiring the password, I'm not sure... I haven't run into that issue before14:29
oxekpragmaticenigma: `udisksctl monitor` run without sudo, properly shows the usb stick when it is inserted14:32
gigirockoxek, excuse me i have no log, what's the matter ?14:32
oxekgigirock: when a usb flashdrive is inserted, icon appears on desktop but clicking it produces an arror, not even a popup asking for root privileges14:32
oxekit works perfectly fine on another ubuntu machine14:33
gigirockoxek, mmmmh check the group of the user logged14:33

oxekthe error is the well-known "Failed to mount "USBSTICK" Not authorized to perform operation"14:34
oxekwith no solutions online14:34
gigirockand both the computers are running uefi bios ?14:34
oxekgigirock: both are uefi, but I don't think that's relevant here - there was another user here recently with some uefi issues14:35
TolhsadumOk I seem to have a reproducible problem. I reinstall Ubuntu 18.04 from a live usb. If i reboot directly after the install it works fine. But if I make the first update from the gui when I reboot the grub is broken again14:36
wedrHello, on an Ubuntu installation, with Apache Tomcat installed, where can I find the folder directory location for /srv/tomcat/incoming ?14:36
pragmaticenigmaTolhsadum: Most common issue is graphics drivers causing blank screens on boot. Try adding nomodeset during boot?14:37
wedrOr this is more of a Tomcat question, since I feel the /srv/tomcat seems to be a particularly specific Tomcat folder...14:38
gigirockoxek, in modern bios , you have to 'promote' some device to be secure for the system, for example external disks14:38
TolhsadumI'll try but I don't have a black/white screen it just reboots for ever14:39
pragmaticenigmawedr: Ubuntu places web server content in /var/www path. Where are you reading your documentation?14:39
oxekgigirock: that goes beyond my knowledge - please advice where I can read up on this14:39
wedrpragmaticenigma, it was a company documentation citing something official from the Ubuntu docs, but it's a broken link so I have no way to verify it14:42
wedrprobably because of the formatting14:42
wedrI did see a /srv/ folder on Ubuntu though14:42
TolhsadumAlright, nomodeset doesn't work :s14:43
pragmaticenigmawedr: That sounds like someone in your company has the answers you seek. Companies frequently change things to suit their needs. I would be looking for a resource in your company that knows how things are configured.14:43
wedrThey left a while ago, back in August. All knowledge transfers were made, but they're all in Ellington, CT.14:43
wedrI'm in Boston.14:43
wedrAnd none of the KTs have information about Ubuntu specific configurations the company uses14:44
gigirockoxek, we are out of issue, https://deploymentresearch.com/allowing-normal-users-to-connect-to-a-new-thunderbolt-docking-station/ in this case the security is about thunderbolt , but you can setup also something for usb ports.14:44
oxekgigirock: thunderbolt is a different beast due to DMA, usb does not have DMA hence no need for root permissions14:45

TolhsadumI just noticed a quick error when I boot saying "broken BIOS?". I think it's linked to what prevents me from passing the grub and even repairing it :s15:09
TolhsadumDoes anyone know how to fix the BIOS? :S15:09
oxekTolhsadum: that dmesg line is irrelevant15:09
oxekit shows on almost every machine15:09
Tolhsadumoxek I didn't have that before though. And I tried to fix my grub the whole day :s. Even after reinstalling Ubuntu 18.04 I still have the problem. It seems to be linked to the update15:12
TolhsadumIf I reboot before doing any update right after ubuntu brand new installation it works. But as soon as I do the first update I can't reboot anymore15:12
oxekTolhsadum: what gets updated during the first update?15:15
TolhsadumIt was through the GUI update manager, maybe I should do it manually. But I see that many security updates and among them ubuntu base with like 100 packages :s15:18
TolhsadumIt's the first update right after the installation so it's kinda big15:18
pragmaticenigmadepending on what image you're installing from... could be nearly all the packages15:18

Rockwoodcan I?15:33
pragmaticenigmaRockwood: "sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop"15:33
FuchsRockwood: can yes, but why would you like a GUI on a server? In most cases this is discouraged15:33
compdocRockwood, yes, but you need a 2d desktop if you want remote desktop15:34
compdocI put minimal desktops on all my ubuntu servers15:34
pragmaticenigmaFuchs: We're here to help, please avoid criticism.15:34
RockwoodFuchs I don't understand your point15:35
Fuchspragmaticenigma: it's not criticism, it's helping to shoot in oneselfs foot from various points of views  (ressources, security and remote sessions), hence if I have more details I might be able to suggest a better solution15:35
FuchsRockwood: what is your use case to have a GUI on the server for?15:35
nightuserHi! I'm building my own stripped-down variant of kernel for my small arm-based device and I want to use Ubuntu there. Does Ubuntu require some specific kernel options to be set? Also, is it necessary to apply Ubuntu's own patchset on top of the kernel (like https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.3.12/ )?15:36
lotuspsychje!discuss | Fuchs15:36
ubottuFuchs: Want to talk about Ubuntu, but don't have a support question? /join #ubuntu-discuss for non-support Ubuntu discussion, or try #ubuntu-offtopic for general chat. Thanks!15:36
Fuchslotuspsychje: yes, thanks, I am supporting Rockwood15:36
lotuspsychjeFuchs: as pragmaticenigma was saying, please keep support & opinions divided15:37
RockwoodFuchs actually it makes work easier to me in some cases15:37
Fuchsit's not an opinion, really. What compdoc wrote might affect them, therefore recommending a solution that might break various things should probably be analyzed15:37
FuchsRockwood: that's fine, for various reasons it might make sense to install something more lightweight, though. Will you be needing graphical remote sessions as well?15:38
FuchsRockwood: also how much ressources (RAM, mainly) does that VM have?15:38
Rockwood1.5 GB15:38
Rockwoodsudo apt install ubuntu-desktop I did this15:39
Fuchsyeah, then I'd definitely suggest something way more lightweight, otherwise you will most likely either run into swapping, which will make your server very slow, or have random applications / services killed by the oom killer15:39
Rockwoodas per suggested me15:39
compdocMate makes an excellent minimal desktop15:39
Rockwoodits 6 %15:39
Rockwoodstop it now?15:40
Rockwoodstopped15:40
FuchsRockwood: you can install it and you can try running it, if you run into the above mentioned issues, I recommend installing something more lightweight15:40
compdocI dont beleive you can use the standard Ubuntu desktop if you want to log in remotely15:40
Fuchsyou can't, but given it's a VM they might not need to, hence me asking15:40
Rockwoodidk know which lightweight?15:40
lotuspsychjeplease take this to #ubuntu-discuss15:41
FuchsRockwood: there are many and it comes down to personal preference, but if you don't have a preference, try   apt install lxde     (you can alsso have ubuntu-desktop installed at the same time, and choose which to use at login)15:41
oerheks1lotuspsychje, i think this is alright15:41
Fuchslotuspsychje: ubuntu-desktop with 1.5 GB will swap. This is not a matter of opinion or preference, but rather giving support advice that is very likely to break for the user15:41
Rockwoodhow to remove that incomplete installtion15:42
pragmaticenigmaFuchs: They should install "sudo apt install lubuntu-desktop" for lxde... the meta package contains dependiceis and scripts for setting up the xserver properly.15:42
Rockwoodidk much about ubuntu15:42
FuchsRockwood: if apt complains about something that is unconfigured, it will give you the command to fix it, but you are most likely fine. Feel free to install both and see which one works for you, if you run into memory issues or need remote desktop, try the second one15:42
Fuchspragmaticenigma: ah, thanks, that one, then15:42
iorianowadays lubuntu-desktop and lxde are 2 different things; the first will pull lxqt not lxde15:47
RockwoodI think I need lamp stack too for my ubuntu server15:48
Fuchsioria: either will most likely be fine, just ubuntu-desktop won't, as the 1.5 GB RAM the user has is _way_ below the recommendation15:48

avid_fanGreetings all. How would I disconnect from a dead ssh session from within a tmux session? More info: I'm connected to a remote server, then start tmux, then ssh to another server. If I try to disconnect (<ENTER>~.) it terminates the initial connection, not the "nested" one. I want to kill the nested one.17:08
avid_fanI suppose I can kill the tmux window, but I was hoping to just break that ssh connection.17:11
akkI haven't used tmux, but ~. should kill an ssh session. You might have to hit return first.17:11
akkoh, oops, you said that, I guess tmux uses the same sequence?17:12
pragmaticenigmaavid_fan: instead of keyboard shortcuts, which are going to be interpreted by the first client/application, you can type "logout" on the cli to close the connection17:24
pragmaticenigmaor shorter, type "exit"17:24
akkI assume "dead ssh session" meant that there was no active shell on the other end.17:26
pragmaticenigmahard to know... when I read it, it felt more like they were unintentionally terminating the initial ssh connection17:28
ioriaavid_fan, have you tried pressing  'twice' C-b  ?17:30
avid_fanThanks for the feedback all. The issue is that sometimes the nested ssh session "locks" and normally when I run into this I can use the <ENTER>~. to disconnect. The problem is that since I'm already connected to a remote box that command kills the global ssh connection.17:40
avid_fanioria: tried C-b a couple times, but that doesn't appear to really have done much.17:41
avid_fanI see no feedback in the terminal. I don't have a currently locked ssh session to try that on though.17:41
ioriaavid_fan, for  C-b  i mean the prefix, unless you use something different17:43
avid_fanYeah, I was following that bit.17:45
avid_fanMy tmux is using the standard key bindings17:45
ioriaavid_fan, so in theory the first prefix is caught by the outer session, and  the second is passed to the inner session17:47
avid_fanOh, perhaps there's a misunderstanding ioria. I'm not starting tmux on my workstation, only once I connect to the central server. From there I ssh to yet other servers and it's this ssh session I'd like to disconnect from, instead of killing the tmux window.17:49
ioriaavid_fan, ah, i see17:51
avid_fanIf killing the tmux window is the answer, I'm fine with that. I just thought I'd ask to see if there was some other way.17:52

lordcirthGreyXor, it seems that the disk is formatted GPT, but you have booted in legacy/BIOS mode? Try switching your BIOS settings to EFI-only.18:13
GreyXorlordcirth, i don't have any EFI parameter in my motherboard settings18:13
lotuspsychjeraidghost: did you update system to latest?18:15
lordcirthGreyXor, ok. Try switching to another tty, running 'fdisk /dev/sdb', and formatting it MSDOS, then re-run the installer18:15
GreyXorlordcirth, alright18:16
ioriaGreyXor, how many disks do you have  there ?18:16
raidghostlotuspsychje: did update system to latest yes.18:17
raidghosti had a hope that the graphical card was no longer a pain in the latest version. but i was wrong.18:18
lotuspsychjeraidghost: this might be something: i915 0000:00:02.0: vgaarb: changed VGA decodes:18:18
oerheksconnect the cable properly screwed?18:19
raidghostOrphis: talking to who? me ?18:20
raidghostWell. With dualboot on the hp proobok it works 100% perfect with Windows 10. So i guess there is nothing wrong with the card.18:21
lotuspsychjeraidghost: do you still have older kernels in your list?18:21
raidghostNeeh. Removed them.18:22
lotuspsychjeraidghost: and you say you have this same color revert on all ubuntu versions?18:22
raidghostlotuspsychje: correct18:23
lotuspsychjeraidghost: got a screenshot of that?18:23
raidghosti will check if i still got the picture18:24

lordcirthGreyXor, great! Legacy boot on GPT is an odd configuration that tends to cause issues.18:27
lotuspsychjeraidghost: did you try lubuntu/xubuntu on that machine yet?18:28
GreyXorlordcirth, outch, another error :/ i show you18:29
GreyXorlordcirth, https://snipboard.io/wCnHdR.jpg18:29
ioriaraidghost, you can try a custom xorg.conf in /etc/X1118:30
raidghostioria: oh? hmmm...18:30
ioriaraidghost, https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/79JP9MYJGG/18:31
raidghostlotuspsychje: i can give it a try on my girlfriends laptop. To see if it works out better18:31
lordcirthGreyXor, weird. Did you checksum the ISO? During the installer boot, there should be an option to self-checksum18:31
raidghostioria: i dont have a xorg.conf file18:32
ioriaraidghost, i know; you have to create one18:32
GreyXorlordcirth, ok, i will check that thanks for help18:32
raidghostioria: and then what more?18:33
ioriaraidghost, reboot18:33
GreyXorat first he asks me to update the installer. maybe the new installer is broken. i will try the old one18:33
raidghostioria: back. how do i check if it now uses the xorg.conf file?18:35
ioriaraidghost, check journalctl or Xorg.0.log , probably in .local/share/xorg now18:35
raidghost/usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[1413]: (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"18:36

bofankooerheks, I can't tell for sure but I think I used to use file manager before for acessing usb files. All I want to do is transfer some photos and music19:08

rfmjohnjay, I'm on 19.10, but I don't think 18.10 is any different; I went to tweaks>keyboard and mouse clicked on the Disabled button by Compose key, turned on the switch in the dialog that popped up, that allowed me to select Right Alt as compose key.  Then <right alt> followed by ' and e gave me  é as I would expect20:01

johnjayxmodmap isn't different though... i guess i won't ask how this is working then20:16
rfmjohnjay, It's using the xkb (X keyboard extension), xmodmap is an older interface.  Display its settings with "setxkbmap -query".20:21

wedrCurrently working in Eclipse Java, and I have this Ubuntu Gnome3 issue with the scrollbar. Whenever I wanted to view something down at the very bottom of the view pane, like Variables or Debug, and I need to look at the very last row, the horizontal scrollbar would completely block that last line/row. It's annoying.21:01
wedrI wanted to tweak the Gnome3 theme on Ubuntu, so the scrollbar doesn't block anything21:01
wedrAnything I can try to work with? Online resources only shows how to disable scrollbars, which I do not want. I want to keep my scrollbars.21:02
