DayZenGood evening, have a question. I have a dedicated server from ovh.com and also purchased an IP block of 4. When i attempt to add the ip with netplan i dont even show a config file at all for it, does anyone know how to add a 2nd ip address to box? Running ubuntu 18.0401:32
tatertotsyou'll probably need to consult the OVH administration documentation01:33

Sven_vBmy SSH connection between two xenial machines on my LAN stalls at key exchange. wireshark on the server sees "Key exchange init", then a TCP retransmission for which it did not capture the previous segment. does that make any sense? any ideas how to fix it with software? it works if I use a better quality LAN connection, but I'd prefer that somewhat-broken link if possible. after all that's what TCP is made for, isn't it?03:32
Sven_vBI'll see if I can find that missing segment somewhere on the SSH client side in wireshark.03:34

huawei-usb-modemnmcli for the win then, thanks.08:31
tomreynit's probably possible to get this to work with wvdial, too, i just dont know how08:32

You may have better luck asking in #gnome or using the "irc.gnome.org" server (also found through GIMPNet IRC) for their official support channels.13:16
huawei-usb-modemtomreyn: Thanks once again.13:16
MaximBpragmaticenigma thanks13:16
tomreynhuawei-usb-modem: you're welcome once again. ;)13:17
DroAny idea about this problem guys ? https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/z2YkyHyKt4/13:17
tomreynDro: provide more context.13:18
tomreynubuntu version, kernel version, which command generated this output etc.13:19
Drotomreyn: 18.04 , not sure about the kernel, but this happen when I try to boot to Ubuntu13:19
DroIts not the output of a command, Ubuntu don't boot13:19
Droand show that error13:19
tomreynDro: is this a fresh installation then?13:20
InteloI think my isp has blocked tor, I cannot open torproject site too. I have ubuntu and stuck on configuration page. What server url etc should I give or any easy way to install tor browser?13:20
tomreynIntelo: tor is available in ubuntu13:21
J_CIntelo: sudo apt install torbrowser-launcher13:21
Intelotomreyn,  it is, Thats the server url I was talking about13:21
J_Cor, for just tor, sudo apt install tor13:21
InteloJ_C, yes; stuck at it13:21
InteloJ_C, yes. does not goes further13:22
tomreynIntelo: then use a differen tubuntu archive mirror13:22
Intelotomreyn, no use13:23
tomreynit's unlikely that you'd run into a timeout if its blocked, more likely you'd run into an error message13:23
Intelotomreyn,  which one you used?13:23
Inteloit says 'downloading tor for the first time' since many hours and this repeates13:24
tomreynshow your output for    sudo /bin/true && cat &>/tmp/aptlog < <(sudo apt-get -y update 2>&1; apt-cache policy 2>&1; sudo apt-get -syV full-upgrade 2>&1;); nc termbin.com 9999 </tmp/aptlog && rm /tmp/aptlog13:24
tomreynthe "tor" package in ubuntu would not print the message "downloading tor for the first time", i don't think so13:25
Intelook one minut13:25
tomreynoh you seem to be trynig to install tor browser bundle instead13:25
Drotomreyn: no its not a frech installation.. Its installed in my external hard drive since few months13:26
Droand it was working fine, not sure why it does not work anymore13:26
Intelotomreyn, https://termbin.com/k50z13:27
tomreynDro: so you are trying to boot off the external hard drive?13:27
tomreynIntelo: look at what you posted, solve the errors ("E:") and warnings ("W:") reported by apt13:28
Drotomreyn:  trying to boot from it, yes13:28
tomreynDro: its ESP seems to be missing critical files according to this output. you could possibly just copy those from the ESP on your default boot device.13:30
tomreynDro: disabling "secure boot" in your "BIOS" could also help.13:30
Intelotomreyn,  how do I remove all those third party repos?13:31
tomreynIntelo: the same way you added them, just in reverse.13:31
tomreyn!ppa-purge13:32
ubottuTo disable a PPA from your sources and revert your packages back to default Ubuntu packages, install ppa-purge and use the command: « sudo ppa-purge ppa:<repository-name>/<subdirectory> » – For more information, see http://www.webupd8.org/2009/12/remove-ppa-repositories-via-command.html13:32
tomreynbut this only works for PPAs (i.e. repositories hosted at ppa.launchpad.net)13:32
ducasseyou can use it for others as long as you specify server etc with options13:33
tomreynoh, good, i didnt remember this.13:34
tomreynotherwise: the others you'd need to remove manually, by removing their apt gpg signing key off the apt repository keyring, and by removing the corresponding file off /etc/apt/sources.list.d/13:34
ducasseeric also wrote a wrapper to make it easier, ask him13:35

InteloI think my isp has blocked tor, I cannot open torproject site too. I have ubuntu and stuck on configuration page. What server url etc should I give or any easy way to install tor browser?13:38
Drotomreyn: what does it mean ESP ? and where can I find it please ?13:40
Drobtw I found out that the folder /boot/efi of my external drive is empty13:40
cryptodanIntelo: what makes you think that they blocked the website for tor browser?13:41
ducasseDro: efi system partition, it should be mounted at /boot/efi13:41
Intelocryptodan,  because i cannot open it13:41
tomreynDro: esp = efi system partition, which a running uefi booted ubuntu would mount to /boot/efi13:41
Drotomreyn: my /boot/efi is empty currently13:42
Drofrom where can I copy this files?13:42
EriC^^Intelo: if you find it useful https://github.com/ericj112/ppa-tool13:42
cryptodanIntelo: so when you go here https://www.torproject.org/download/ it just spins or do you get any error code?13:43
tomreynDro: your standard ubuntu installation (not the one on the external disk) also has an empty /boot/efi ?13:43
EriC^^Dro: do you have a live usb you can boot? or another ubuntu installation on another disk?13:44
tomreynIntelo: disable your proxy server if you can.13:44
Drotomreyn: no but its too different i guess.. i can copy it from the install drive?13:44
Intelotomreyn,  which proxy? I dont have one13:44
Intelocryptodan, This site can’t be reachedThe connection was reset.13:45

EriC^^Dro: great, are you on it right now?13:46
Drobut it contains too much folder13:46
Intelotomreyn,  18 something13:46
cryptodanIntelo: using firefox or another browser13:46
DroSo i'm worried if it will affect the usb one13:46
EriC^^Dro: no worries, i got you ;)13:46
tomreynIntelo: is this windows subsystem for linux?13:46
DroEriC^^: Yes, /boot/efi contains two folders : EFI and en-US13:46
Intelohow to run from cmd?13:47
DroIt looks different13:47
Intelotomreyn,  pure ubuntu13:47
EriC^^Dro: ok, dont copy anything, type "sudo parted -ls | nc termbin.com 9999" and paste the link it gives you13:47
EriC^^Dro: we won't copy anything, we'll chroot into the external hdd install and let it reinstall grub13:47
tomreynIntelo: ok, i'm wondering because the message "Could not handshake: Error in the pull function. [IP: 116.202.120.165 443]" in your log, for the "deb.torproject.org" apt source, usually points to a proxy server getting in the way. this could also be caused by an anti virus scanner.13:48

Intelotomreyn,  what should I do13:49
DroBut its not always plugged, It won't affect grub when I remove it ?13:49
EriC^^Dro: which one is the external hdd?13:49
DroEriC^^: the external is Model:  Mass Storage Device (scsi)13:50
DroThe current (internal) is Model: ATA SanDisk X400 M.2 (scsi)13:50
tomreynIntelo: i already told you: you need to take appropriate action to remove the errors and warnings on your "apt update" output.13:50
EriC^^Dro: how are you checking that /boot/efi is empty on the external hdd? it says no partition table13:50
DroEriC^^: well simple i opened the disk, and gone to /boot/efi13:51
Droand found it empty13:51
EriC^^Dro: aha, open the disk, then type "mount | nc termbin.com 9999"13:51
EriC^^Dro: i guess it might be that it is installed directly without a partition table, and perhaps it uses the first disk's grub as a bootloader13:52
DroEriC^^: btw, when I type the first command i get this with the link : ~$ sudo parted -ls | nc termbin.com 999913:52
DroError: Invalid argument during seek for read on /dev/sdc13:52
DroEriC^^: Well its in the fact an internal disk of my old laptop and use it with a USB case13:53

tomreynIntelo: do you want to install "tor" or "tor browser (bundle)"?13:54
Intelotomreyn,  I have installed tor and torbrowser-launcher. My aim is to use tor browser.13:55
EriC^^Dro: ok, mount is showing partitions of sdc mounted, i wonder why parted is saying there's no partition table13:55
Intelotomreyn,  I heard bundle is best but you suggest what to do for fast solution13:55
EriC^^Dro: anyways, let's try to reinstall grub13:55
EriC^^Dro: type "sudo mount /dev/sdc3 /mnt"13:56
tomreynIntelo: for a fast solution, which is not supported here, you'd access https://www.torproject.org/download/ and click on the penguin icon13:57
Intelotomreyn,  ok, ignore that. Whats the supported version ?13:58

DroEriC^^: sudo mount /dev/sdc3 /mnt done14:00
Intelotomreyn,  yes, what to do next?14:00

Intelotomreyn, I just got a tor config window. What should be tor server, mirror,  and 'download over tor system' checkbox status?14:03
tomreynIntelo: note that torbrowser-launcher includes a build of tor, which would likely conflict with a separate installation of the "tor" package (and could be the cause for the download issues of torbrpwser-launcher)14:03

tomreyn!nomodeset | _Random_:14:16
ubottu_Random_:: A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter14:16
EriC^^Dro: ok, let's reorganize the uefi list so that the ext hdd is first, then internal hdd14:16

DroEriC^^: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/GPKfvR3Pz6/14:17

DroEriC^^: just a curious question.. The 000D does not require something like the "0000" entry related to 000C ?14:17
DroBecause I though in my boot options I had two "ubuntu" (when things where working)14:18
EriC^^Dro: i dunno what the 0000 entry is, it's very odd14:18
EriC^^nah, it only needs 1 entry14:18
_Random_so Ive just started the install14:18
Drothats ok then14:18
DroEriC^^: any other steps?14:18
_Random_with 3rd party  & proprietory software14:18
EriC^^Dro: i'm curious about the gpt signature issue though, it may or may not affect stuff, we could try to run 'sudo gdisk -l /dev/sdc' and see if it offers any info about it14:19
EriC^^Dro: also i just noticed it did not add any file to the entry, so we might need to run that efibootmgr with -w as it suggested doing14:20
DroEriC^^: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/YQTbrnKQSM/14:20
EriC^^Dro: what does "sudo hdparm -N /dev/sdc" give?14:21
DroEriC^^: https://termbin.com/um3814:21
EriC^^Dro: ok, it seems there's some problem with HPA so it's not being able to read the full disk and causing this partition table issue and checksum fault14:23
DroEriC^^: hmmm, so what do you suggest ?14:23
mohnishHello everyone! And, Happy New Year! I have some problems with virtualbox, I installed the package virtualbox but, it won't show up in my menu. I am using Ubuntu 19.10 MATE14:24
EriC^^Dro: i think you can disable HPA (host protected area) maybe14:25
mohnishBut, I can launch virtualbox with the terminal no problem.14:26
mohnishI'd like to have it in the menu too.14:26
EriC^^Dro: i think also you can use hdparm to set the max size of the disk to the actual physical size14:26
_Random_thanks ubottu:14:27
DroEriC^^: not sure, i'm understanding what hdparm is.. but things should'nt work now until i fix this ?14:30
EriC^^Dro: right now it seems all good, except that in the uefi list it doesnt say the file for some reason, i dunno if itll work or no, you might try it, it seems there's some problem with the partition table and needs fixing or something14:31
EriC^^Dro: anyways for now, type "exit" to exit the chroot and try to boot14:31
EriC^^if it doesnt boot the ext hdd it should jump to 2nd entry which is the internal hdd14:32
tomreyn_Random_: so you rebooted the installer with nomodeset? or did you manage to get a working window manager by other means?14:33
EriC^^Dro: i guess then you need to use gdisk tools to fix the partition table, i checked the sectors it's 468862128*512 which comes out to around 240gb so i dunno about hpa preventing it to read some parts of the disk, maybe it's just a corrupted partition table/gpt headers14:33
EriC^^Dro: anyways for now try rebooting and see what happens14:33
_Random_sorry guys i'm back & forgive me I'm not much  of a techie.. install completed, pink screen comes up but no text14:35

pragmaticenigmaEmJayCeeDee: Software Center is only an interface. As far as updates, Ubuntu by default sets itself up to check for updates once per day. pragmaticenigmatomreyn: I assume the address 192.168.1.1 is most likely their home network router/gateway. A lot of cheap ones assign themselves as the DNS provider and proxy the requests out16:51
tomreynferz: 192.168.1.1 is probably your ADSL modem/router/wireless AP. unless you configured it to use custom nameservers this seems to suggest that the nameservers your ISP provides return those incorrect results.16:52

_Random_need help, its been a long time since using ubuntu21:29
Bashing-om!ask | _Random_21:30

_Random_my install with nvidia gpu has failed.. Just started recovery, logged in with ssh to "$"21:30
_Random_but can't get to root..21:30
adamcunningtonBashing-om ok thx21:30
_Random_what is the command used to be sudo -i21:31
_Random_other distros its just su  or su -i21:31
Bashing-omadamcunnington: Others here may have the WSL experience -but the dedidated channelis there.21:32
adamcunningtonok thx21:32
_Random_im logged in with ssh  but cant access root21:32
leftyfbadamcunnington: WSL isn't meant to run Windows applications within Ubuntu21:32
leftyfb_Random_: sudo su21:32
adamcunningtonthat's not true at all21:33
_Random_thanks21:33
adamcunningtonleftyfb https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/interop21:33
_Random_bash: sudo: command not found21:33
adamcunningtonleftyfb and you obviously haven't had much exposure to wsl... one of the biggest discussions that is documented on both ubuntu docs as well as windows docs is the need to run pulseaudio inside of windows to enable ubuntu within wsl to play sound21:33
_Random_ive just gone into recovery & installed openssh-server & then logged in from another pc. but i cant access root21:34
leftyfbadamcunnington: I have plenty of exposure to WSL. But I use it develop in an ubuntu environment and don't try to do silly things like run Windows applications in it. Good luck in #ubuntu-on-windows21:34
_Random_as my monitor is a tv on the ubuntu os as im going to use it as a media pc21:35
adamcunningtonleftyfb please stop being ignorant. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WSL?_ga=2.253445577.1309732669.1577998630-1530869218.1577998630#Enabling_Sound21:35
leftyfb_Random_: if sudo isn't found, then you're not running Ubuntu21:35
_Random_running 19.1021:36
adamcunningtonleftyfb I also use ubuntu within wsl as a dev environment. If my application entails playing sound (which it does), i'd quite like the necessary windows software (pulse audio windows binary) to be run automatically by .bashrc thanks. a VERY reasonable use case that is all over the internet as lots and lots and lots of people are doing it21:36
_Random_as stated just installed fresh,  boot failed due nvidia graphics quadro k1200 maxwell gm107gl21:36
leftyfb_Random_: Ubuntu has sudo. If you don't have it, then it's either not running Ubuntu or you're actually in a busybox environment or your filesystem is damaged beyond repair21:37
_Random_so logged in via recovery21:37
_Random_then installed ssh directly21:37
leftyfb_Random_: how did you install ssh without sudo?21:37
OerHeksadamcunnington, no support for WSL, you have been given the proper channel for that, no?21:38
_Random_directly from the pc not via ssh21:38
adamcunningtoni have yes, was just responding to leftyfb's remarks21:38
_Random_i just ran sudo su on the pc its recognised21:38
leftyfb_Random_: ok, can you run sudo on the pc?21:38
_Random_but not recognised from shell21:38
leftyfbok, then you were not ssh'd into that machine before21:38
_Random_but not recognised from ssh21:38
leftyfb_Random_: on both the pc and via ssh, run: "ip add" and confirm the ip address21:39
_Random_i have "$" access on ssh but not '#"21:39
leftyfb_Random_: $ is user, # is root21:39
_Random_ip add21:40
Bashing-om!info nvidia-driver-440 eoan21:40
leftyfb_Random_: yes, run that on the pc console and via ssh21:40
ubottuPackage nvidia-driver-440 does not exist in eoan21:40
adamcunningtonHow would I run an executable in background and ignore all output?21:42
adamcunningtonfoo & >> null ?21:42
OerHekshow do I run a windows executable in the background .. turn monitor off?21:43
_Random_ahh.. im a dumb ass. thought i was logged into ssh was not21:44
_Random_so now i get21:44
_Random_System is booting up. Unprivileged users are not permitted to log in yet21:44
adamcunningtonOerHeks i'm asking about a ubuntu executable21:44
adamcunningtonOerHeks I don't think my question is actually windows specific - how, in ubuntu, would i run any application in background ignoring all output21:44
adamcunningtoni.e. start a daemon service (without using systemd or similar)21:44
_Random_can run from the pc but the graphics are disjointed as it's a TV not a monitor21:45
leftyfbadamcunnington: yourcommand &>/dev/null21:46
_Random_ok ruuning upgrades from the pc..21:47
_Random_so how can I  fix my boot issues with my gpu21:47
leftyfb_Random_: how did you install the nvidia drivers?21:48
_Random_I have 2 gpu..I need to disable  the intel xeon  as I have lead that will plug in to the TV monitor with it21:48
Bashing-om_Random_: That new of a card, you may in deed need a proprietary driver. What shows ' sudo ubuntu-drivers list ' As Nvidia recommends the 440 version driver.21:49
_Random_and setup the nvidia k1200 gm107gl maxwell chip21:49
_Random_they are 435,430 & 390 nvidias21:50
Bashing-om_Random_: And ... what have you done to attempt an install of a propriatary driver ?21:53
_Random_ive just ran lspci | grep -i --color 'vga\|3d\|2d'21:53
_Random_only the nvidia quadro card is listed21:53
Bashing-om_Random_: ' sudo lshw -C display '?21:54
leftyfb_Random_: you installed Ubuntu 19.10. Then what did you do/run after to install nvidia drivers before rebooting and being forced into recovery mode?21:54
adamcunningtonleftyfb in case you are interested, I figured it out21:55
adamcunningtoncmd.exe /c start "" /B "C:\Program Files\PulseAudio\bin\pulseaudio.exe" &>/dev/null21:55
adamcunningtonOerHeks likewise ^21:55
adamcunningtoncmd.exe /c makes the cmd quit instantly, but not before starting the thing in the background; and then output of whole thing sent to /dev/null21:56
leftyfbadamcunnington: looks exactly like what I gave you. You're welcome. And you lied about it being an ubuntu application you were running.21:56
adamcunningtonleftyfb I never said it was an ubuntu application - re-read21:56

OerHeks<adamcunnington> OerHeks i'm asking about a ubuntu executable21:57
adamcunningtonleftyfb looks nothing like what you gave me. the significant bit that was tricky was cmd.exe /c start "" /B21:57
_Random_Bashing-om: only list the gm107gl21:57
leftyfbadamcunnington: that has nothing to do with Ubuntu. What I gave you answers: "how, in ubuntu, would i run any application in background ignoring all output"21:57
hggdhadamcunnington: yes, because this is a Windows command21:57
adamcunningtonOerHeks out of context. That was later when I was asking SPECIFICALLY about how one would go about running an ubuntu application in background21:57
OerHeks.... troll21:57
hggdhOerHeks: please don't21:57
adamcunningtonbecause for all intents and purposes with WSL interopability, cmd.exe is treated as an ubuntu application21:57
adamcunningtonOerHeks no, not a troll. you have failed to understand. that's not my fault. i haven't trolled once.21:58
OerHeksabure of volunteers, it is.21:58
adamcunningtonRe-read the entire conversation and you will realise where you have mistepped; I have not.21:58
leftyfbadamcunnington: it's not supported here. Please take all further support to #ubuntu-on-windows21:58
_Random_leftyfb:  after install boot failed, I could not access anything except via recovery, so installed openssh-server & just ran upgrades21:58
adamcunningtonleftyfb, I have arrived at a solution and I was sharing that solution. I don't know what you are talking about.21:58
leftyfb_Random_: reinstall again.21:58
hggdhOK. This is done here. If you all want to keep on discussing this, please do it elsewhere21:58
_Random_i will end up at the same point..21:59
adamcunningtonI don't, I was just sharing the result of my search :|. Thanks.21:59
Bashing-om_Random_: That suggest that the Intel chip set is disabled in Bios - anything for Intel: lspci -k | grep -iEA5 'vga|3d' ?21:59

r416Hey Im running 18.04 and have been trying to use mdadm to convert to raid 1. I got the raid working but after a reboot im getting: error: attempt to read or write outside of partition. Then I see the grub rescue screen. Also when booting from a live USB and using fdisk the raid partition isn't there and it says my gpt partition table is corrupt22:09

OerHeksthat might explain the issues?22:24
secsonthebeachHello. Is anyone familiar with the live-build workflow?22:24
secsonthebeachI am working on a custom image for my team, but am wanting to include code and tools from GitHub. what is the best approach to pulling and including such things? I'm reading through the manual thinking that pulling the source in during image build, and then compiling and installing during boot would be best. Additionally, my goal is to create an image that can be used either live or installed.22:24
_Random_I'm not much of a techie, so I can understand clearly.. based on whats listed here it should boot correctly22:24
OerHekssecsonthebeach, we don't do 'build my own linux' , there is however Cubic, good luck! https://askubuntu.com/questions/741753/how-to-use-cubic-to-create-a-custom-ubuntu-live-cd-image22:25
secsonthebeachI'll check it out. thanks!22:27
Bashing-om_Random_: What I do not know will fill a large volume. Is this muxless graphics? What results when you run: /usr/bin/prime-supported ; that generates /var/log/prime-supported.log, which may be useful in such cases.22:32
Bashing-om_Random_: MUX-less:  Optimus chipsets - that is, dual GPUs where the outputs are NOT switched between the GPUs using a multiplexer.  (muxless -- that is that the graphics are not multiplexed through the Intel chip. Most systems are now muxless, but that is not universal.)- nvidia (Discrete GPU) output is through the Intel (Intergrated GPU) graphic's set.22:37
_Random_offloading required abort22:38
_Random_Bashing-om: the intel is disabled22:39
_Random_in the bios22:39
Bashing-om_Random_: the Intel GPU would need to be active since MUX-less works by the nvidia doing the work but the Intel writing the framebuffer to the outputs, rather than with MUX systems where each GPU writes to its own framebuffers, and the outputs are switched between the 2 GPUs.22:40
_Random_both nouveau & nvidia are listed, in my image can we disable the nouveau22:42
Bashing-om_Random_: "kernel driver in use: Nvidia" . Those other modules listed are only available for use.22:45
_Random_ok thanks22:46
_Random_i apprciate your effort22:47
