JarvisSaveshello all - anyone running 19.10 on a fairly new Asus laptop?01:48
JarvisSavesI'm running an asus zenbook pro duo with 19.10 and all runs great with one main exception, can't find way to change the screen brightness, using the function  keys or changing  with the menu at the top right shows the slider, but it doesn't change the screen brightness.  Any ideas on what could be wrong.01:51
JarvisSavesAlso, can't get an answer from the Ubuntu web forum01:52
JarvisSavesAny input or direction would be greatly appreciated.01:53
noodlecanhello!  I have my nameservers defined in netplan.  When i run netplan --debug apply my nameservers are listed correctly.  On each reboot dns fails and I have to run netplan apply again.  ON boot before i run netplan apply, if I run resolvctl status my nameservers are still correctly defined, but dns does not work.  Any ideas what I can try?02:05
=== zbenjamin_ is now known as zbenjamin

JarvisSavesThanks for responding nood...do you have any issues controlling your screen brightness02:06
noodlecanalso i have networkmanager disabled in systemd and am using networkd as my renderer.  JarvisSaves, my server is headless02:08
noodlecannetplan is correctly publishing nameservers to /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf.  I have tried enabling and disabling DNSStubListener with no change between reboots02:11
subho99Hey guys, I have a R5 2500U APU. I'm having trouble booting up all 5.x kernels. At first I cuoldn't boot them at all.02:11
subho99 Then I added the boot parameters iommu=soft and idle=nomwait, I could work without random crashes. But whenever I put my device to sleep, on waking up the screen is always black and  I need to do a force restart by pressing the power button.02:11

hnnerr63Hi everyone. Quick question. Has there been any updates for Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS since Dec 24? I haven't received any since that time.02:49
damianhey team, i've been having an issue with one of my servers for a while, it started after a few updates. 18.04.01 LTS. for some reason DNS just isn't working, whenever i attempt to ping/nslookup/wget it's returning generic unable to do a lookup02:53
retryhnnerr63, i basically asked same question02:53
retrydidn't get much of a response02:53
retry19th for me02:53
hnnerr63@retry Ah ok.. thanks for that.02:53
damiani believe it's using netplan, i've checked the netplan configuration and nameservers look correct, even set them to Google public DNS to ensure02:53
damiani can do an nslookup with a manual server selected and it works as well02:54
damiani also have configuration in my /etc/network/interfaces for the interface, changing this doesn't have any effect on the issue either02:54

CarlFKhow do I force a package to reinstall?04:29
CarlFKto overwrite the binaries it installed.  one seems to have gotten altered04:30
ilviperothere are a few ways to handle it. have you tried purging and then installing again?04:31
CarlFKI haven't tried anything yet.  isnt' there a -reinstall or something ?04:31
Bashing-omCarlFK: Try ' sudo apt install --reinstall <package> ' .04:31
CarlFKyeah that.04:31
ilviperoyou can also try: sudo apt-get purge applicationname && sudo apt-get install applicationname04:32
pragmaticenigmailvipero, purging will delete any of the user's configurations. I would recommend that as a last thing to try if Bashing-om's suggestion fails04:34
pragmaticenigmailvipero, When someone asks to reinstall, there's a good change they don't want to have to start over from scratch04:35
ilviperoyes, but good to keep as last resort, as if a configuration file is corrupted or triggers a bug, clearing it will most likely fix the issue.04:39
ilviperonext time I will be clearer, thanks for pointing that out04:40
CarlFKhow do I re-download the .deb, because it seems to be broken: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/7VX3NDMYw6/04:41
pragmaticenigmaCarlFK, You don't want to download the .deb... as that will interfere with apt's ability to track what is going on (and compound your current issue)04:44
Bashing-omCarlFK: Well, one can remove the deb from the /var/cache/apt/archives/ directory - or 'sudo apt clean to removeallofthem '.04:45
CarlFKpragmaticenigma: I want apt  to do t and all that04:45
pragmaticenigmaCarlFK, start with the following: "sudo apt clean all && sudo apt autoremove"04:46
pragmaticenigmaThen try the previous reinstall command again. If that doesn't fix the issue, there is the option to run apt with its --fix-missing parameter. Though I need to read up on how to use that option.04:48

ubottumrwendal, there are tools to help with monitoring your disk's SMART status:: smart is Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology, a monitoring system for hard drives. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Smartmontools05:09
ilviperomrwendal, I am sure the gnome disks can report the serial number of your hard disks. for CLI only, I think you can see the Serial Numbers in the /dev/disk/by-id folder05:11
ilviperoi will double check now and get back to you05:11
mrwendalilvipero, ubottu pragmaticenigma thanks respectively im currently giving smartctl -a /dev/sdc105:13

ChiLLabiSHi! I'm on Ubuntu 18.04. Is it possible to install UbuntuStudio through apt? If so, how?12:46
BluesKajChiLLabiS, UbuntuStudio is a stand alone OS, just like any other ubuntu flavour12:48
ChiLLabiSSo then it would work installing from apt then?12:50
ChiLLabiSI mean i can install Kubuntu-desktop on an standard Ubuntu12:50
BluesKajthe desktop, yes12:50
ChiLLabiSok12:50
BluesKajsame goes for ubuntu studio12:50
ioriaChiLLabiS, if you want a 'full' ubuntustudio install, i suggest a new install (it uses lowlatency kernel and a lot of pkgs)12:51
* BluesKaj assumes ChiLLabiS doesn't want to do a clean install12:53
ChiLLabiSioria: Okay, but isn't it some way i can install and test through apt first? before i choose a fresh install12:53
ChiLLabiShaha right on BluesKaj12:53

jeremy31elphias: you might not notice any difference13:50
ioriaelphias, idk your setup but i'am using xchat atm13:50
mouseselphias: xchat is not maintained anymore and you probably want to chance to a client that is still getting updates/security patches13:51

juanonymoussorry. anyway, i wanted to install deluge on my vps running ubuntu 18.04 xenial. but it seems to not work, nobody in #deluge can help, im hoping that there is one here.13:58
tomreynelphias: if it's about irc, please ask in #freenode , is it's about ubuntu, here's a good place. :)13:59
elphiasone is an interesting issue with my asus laptop, cheese seems to be making my webcam video upside down, and i cannot seem to fix it13:59
elphiasthe other is about the video drivers and "artifacts" on my dual screen asus laptop system13:59
elphiasi have my ubuntu system almost perfect, but i can't get a few things done, and need some help, so, i came here, which i am glad to see that #ubuntu is still here after like 8 years of not using it ^_^14:00
tomreynjuanonymous: can clarify "does not work", since that's not going to enable anyone to help you out. error messages and a descrition of what you did and what happened and what should instead have happened are usually a good way to start analyzing a problem.14:01
tomreyn*can you14:01
elphiasmy first issue is with ubuntu's cheese camera application, everything is upside down, i have tried to fix using various howto's but to no avail, is there something i can do to right the image?14:02
elphiasthe laptop is an asus laptop (model number does not match the hardware....it's a franken top)14:03
elphiasaccording to asus they stopped making this laptop at i5, with 8gb of ram, well the serial number says so, however it's running an i7 octa core with 16 gb of ram.....so model numbers are useless in this case14:04
tomreynelphias: "lsusb" should provide further info on the webcam you have there.14:04
elphiastomreyn here's partial output of lsusb   Bus 001 Device 003: ID 13d3:5122 IMC Networks 2M Integrated Webcam14:05
elphiasi just don't know what to do, i've never had this problem in the 15 years i've used ubuntu14:05
elphiasusually i don't need help, google is my friend, but this has me stumped14:06
elphiasand before any of you start to help, let me pre thank you for taking the time out of what your doing to do so14:07
tomreynelphias: can you close cheese, then run this from a terminal?    export LIBV4LCONTROL_FLAGS=2 && LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so cheese14:07
elphiasoddly it says now no device found14:08
juanonymousso i installed deluge, using the command sudo-apt get install deluge deluge-web after i run sudo apt-get update, the install was successful without any errors. on the webpage, it is saying that page could not be loaded or check proxy settings, deluge should run on port 8115, check ufw, it is ok, i even tried disabling firewall but it doesnt help either.14:09
tomreynelphias: hmm, undo it with:  unset LIBV4LCONTROL_FLAGS14:10
juanonymousi also tried using different browsers, from firefox, chrome, opera14:10
elphiasoh wait, i had to use ubuntu's terminal not the cool-retro-terminal14:10
elphiasnow it's working, will that command perminantly fix the issue?14:10
elphiastomreyn here's the output of terminal in ubuntu pastbin14:12
elphiashttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/mD3k2hKKn8/14:12
elphiasis there a way to commmit this change perminantly?14:12
elphiasand thanks for helping ^_^14:12
tomreynelphias: no, it wont be permanent. to make it permanent for your user account, try this:   echo "alias cheese='export LIBV4LCONTROL_FLAGS=2 && LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so cheese'">> ~/.bash_aliases14:13
tomreynelphias: this will only make it work for cheese, though. if you need it rotated in general, a different approach may be better14:14
elphiastomreyn, i need it rotated in general, however the echo command did not seem to work14:15
tomreynjuanonymous: when you run     nc -vv 127.0.0.1 8115    on a terminal, what does it report?14:15
juanonymouslet me check14:15
tomreynelphias: did not seem to work how?14:16
tomreynelphias: i.e. what makes you think it did not work?14:16
elphiaswell i entered the echo command and there was no output just went back to the prompt, i then opened cheese and the image was still upside down14:16
elphiasbut when i enter the first commmand you gave me things work fine14:16
elphiasthe image is right side up and oriented correctly14:17
elphiasthe second command does no change14:17
elphiasi even tried it as root14:17
tomreynelphias: when you run a command on a terminal and there is no output as a result, it usually means that it succeeded.14:18
elphiasyes i understand that, but in this case there was no change in cheese, when i opened it the image was still upside down14:19
elphiasas if the command registered but isn't being excicuted14:19
juanonymoustomreyn: one question, should i run 127.0.0.1 8115 or should i use my vps ip?14:19
tomreynelphias: please logout and login again. then try running cheese from a terminal and see whetehr webcam is then correct. also, please post the url this returns (can be done now):   cat ~/.bash_aliases | nc termbin.com 999914:20
tomreynjuanonymous: 127.0.0.1 8115   first of all, oyu can try your public ip address next if this succeeds14:20
elphiasok getting ready to try now14:21
elphiasbrb14:21

tomreynelphias: did you run cheese from a temrinal or using the desktop shortcut?14:31
elphiastomreyn, there was no desktop shortcut created, i went into the app drawer and tried to use it from there14:32
juanonymousthanks14:32
elphiastomreyn, it's odd the first command seemed to work, the second command seemed to take, but nothing else is working with the camera as it should be14:33
tomreynelphias: here's what i wrote earlier: "then try running cheese from a terminal and see whether webcam is then correct"14:33
tomreynplease run it from a terminal now.14:33
elphiastomreyn, when run from cli it works fine14:34
elphiasi missed the terminal part14:34
tomreynok, so you need to edit the .desktop file then, i guess, let's see14:34
juanonymousthank you it's running now leftyfb14:35
elphiastomreyn, i would not know how to do that.....never had to tinker with this before14:35
elphiastomreyn, downloading skype now to see if things work there or are broken as well14:36
tomreynelphias: the .desktop file is in /usr/share/applications/cheese.desktop but i just realized it does just run "cheese", which i guess mean the alias should have worked.14:36
elphiasand who knows if discord works14:36
tomreynelphias: yes, you should find out whether it needs a general change, that's good.14:37
elphiastomreyn, i got the cheese.desktop file open, do i make any changes there? and if so what?14:38
tomreyni need to leave you there for a bit now, got to work on something else for a bit, sorry. the takeaway for now is that to run cheese you need to run it like this:   export LIBV4LCONTROL_FLAGS=2 && LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so cheese14:38
tomreynhopefully someone else can help in the meantime.14:38
tomreyni read about this here https://askubuntu.com/questions/796082/how-to-fix-inverted-laptop-webcam-video14:39

tomreynelphias: see also https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Webcam/Troubleshooting14:40
elphiasnoodlecan, i will try that, how do i replace the symlink? is there a command for term or do i have to manually edit14:40

akemhpI'll install qjoypad, thanks for the info.15:18

lotuspsychjerud0lf akemhp there seems to be a snap version too15:19
rud0lfi guess you need that with raw input device access15:19
akemhpI recompiled a kernel recently because i need the new drivers for my Wifi.15:19
akemhpYea i used: sudo jstest /dev/usb/hiddev015:20

akemhpI wonder if it's really hiddev0, because i also have an USB mouse in fact.15:22

=== SimonNL is now known as SimonNL_Afk
elphiasso i downloaded that video for linux thing for my cam, but no matter what setting i choose nothing works, does anyone know what the enviroment varibles and arguments are supposed to be so that the came flips right side up?15:59
tomreynelphias: if you have a look at what's in your ~/.bash_aliases - this is a command that is executed when you login. what it does is that it redefines the "cheese" *shell* command (only, so it does not affect cheese started via the graphical desktop) to actually run this: export LIBV4LCONTROL_FLAGS=2 && LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so cheese16:05
elphiasin v4l2ucp threres supposed to be an enviroment variable and an argument, does anyone know what they should be to work with cheese?16:05
tomreynelphias: what the above does: "export LIBV4LCONTROL_FLAGS=2" sets the environment variable "LIBV4LCONTROL_FLAGS" to value "2"; and "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so cheese" runs cheese with the environment variable "LD_PRELOAD" set to the value "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so"16:07
tomreynthe latter causes a video 4 linux (v4l) compatibility layer to be loaded whenever you run the cheese command this way16:08
tomreynand this compatibilitxy layer interprets the "LIBV4LCONTROL_FLAGS" variable, if set, thus rotating the video16:09
elphiasok so let me try this tomreyn, brb16:09
tomreynelphias: you can probably just run     rm ~/.bash_aliases     in a terminal to delete the ~/.bash_aliases file now so that these changes we made earlier no longer apply (and no double rotation takes place, putting you back to where you used to be). and then you can set LIBV4LCONTROL_FLAGS=2 in v4l2ucp, logout, login again, and see whether it is fixed.16:11
elphiastomreyn, what should the value be in bash_aliases? i think i goofed somehow16:12
elphiasbecause now the cam does not work at all16:12
tomreynsee what i just wrote16:12
elphiasi had to relog to try and commit the changes, somehow i goofed, there was 2 lines in there and i deleted both and added what i thought you said the line should be16:13
elphiastomreyn, when i open up v4l2ucp and look in the preview settings this is what is under the enviroment section "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so"16:15

elphiasyes i will send you screenshots16:20
elphiasgive me a few16:20
tomreynthis is what you had in ~/.bash_aliases - one of these lines would be sufficient to run cheese with the roptation applied from a temrinal (only): https://termbin.com/zaze16:20
tomreynbut i think you should not use ~/.bash_aliases for this purpose but do it as ioria suggested, using v4l2ucp16:20

DoowNot sure if this question fits best here or in #blender, but when I start blender sound and video playback stops all over my computer. As soon as I close blender the video playback starts again. (tried on ubuntu and kubuntu 19.04, blender 2.81 installed via snap)18:31
tomreynelphias: i'm back for a while if you have unsolved questions,. please note i discard any private messages by default.18:32
tomreynkorabcenaj: where do yu see the log?18:32
korabcenajIt just pops a windows with the error18:33
tomreynkorabcenaj: do you mean what's logged in /var/log/release-upgrade ?18:33
tomreynkorabcenaj: if it's a graphical message that you're referring to then best take a screenshot and post it to imgur.com (and share the url here)18:34
korabcenajtomreyn I'll do that. Just a sec18:34
tomreynDoow: check    journalctl -f    for any related error messages while you start and stop blender.18:35
korabcenajhttps://pastebin.com/raw/ZixDEckP18:40
korabcenajtomreyn18:40
korabcenajThe graphical message is too long and can't get it all on screenshot'18:41
Doowtomreyn: good thinking, here's some relevant things https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/ZMrFSSF6Xt/18:41
tomreynkorabcenaj: this becomes a lot more readable like this:   curl -s https://pastebin.com/raw/ZixDEckP | sed -E 's/([EW]:)/\n\1/g'; echo18:44
tomreynkorabcenaj: these warnings tell you cleanrly what you need to do. for example, ":7" would be line seven of this file. you can edit these files using a text editor such as nano, and sudo.18:45
SimonNL_Afkquite messy18:46
=== SimonNL_Afk is now known as SimonNL
tomreynDoow: hmm, i'd say contact the snap maintainer, which https://snapcraft.io/blender states is "Blender Foundation"18:46
tomreynactually "blenderfoundation"18:47
korabcenajThe thing is that I did that. So, first of all, I commented one of the lines which is configured multiple times and when I try to upgrade it, it shows me the same error. I tried also to delete one of the lines and still the same problem18:47
korabcenajtomreyn18:47
Doowtomreyn: Ok, thanks18:47
tomreynkorabcenaj: please cancel the upgrade if it's currently pending for confirmation to start, then run this   sudo /bin/true && cat &>/tmp/aptlog < <(sudo apt-get -y update 2>&1; apt-cache policy 2>&1; sudo apt-get -syV full-upgrade 2>&1;); nc termbin.com 9999 </tmp/aptlog && rm /tmp/aptlog18:48
tomreynkorabcenaj: this is just to get a better idea of what's wrong, it doesn't make changes18:48
korabcenajtomreyn https://termbin.com/hhz118:49
tomreynkorabcenaj: and this, too:   cat /etc/apt/sources.list | nc termbin.com 999918:49
korabcenajtomreyn https://termbin.com/ljwm18:50
tomreynhuh, is this an arm64, an amd64, or an i386 system?18:50
tomreynkorabcenaj: nc termbin.com 9999 < <( dpkg --print-architecture; echo; dpkg --print-foreign-architectures;)18:52
Doowtomreyn: it definitely seems to be a problem with the snap, I don't get the same behaviour if I download directly from the website. (if someone else shows up with the same problem, it's an easy workaround =) )18:53
korabcenajtomreyn https://termbin.com/jhfi18:53
tomreynkorabcenaj: do you know what cpu architectures are?18:55
tomreynlike amd64, i386, arm64 ?18:55
korabcenajtomreyn Kind of. Like 32bit or 64 bit18:57
tomreynyes, kind of. so you probably have am amd64 capable CPU there, those are usually compatible to i386, so it's okay to have those two architectures enabled. you have, however, also enabled the arm64 architecture, which your computer cannot actually make use of.18:59
tomreynadmitterdly amd64 and arm64 sound similar, but they are really very different.18:59
tomreynyou must have run "sudo dpkg-add-architecture arm64" at some point, do you remember why you did this?18:59
elphiasok, can someone help me fix my video cam? skype's upside down, and trying to run the command for cheese from terminal says it's not availible19:02
elphiasi went and screwed around with things at peoples suggestions and now things are all sorts of screwed up19:02
elphiascheese is now telling me no device found19:03
korabcenajtomreyn you know how is it with Ubuntu, you want to install something and you have to install other things before that also, so No, I don't remember actually. :/  But can I just uninstall it?19:03
elphiasbut thats only trying to run it via cli19:03
elphiasi might have found a solution but it won't work unless i can fix this issue19:04
ioriaelphias, i suggest to boot the livecd in order to rule out manual mistakes19:04
elphiaswell here's the pastebin of what i am trying to do19:05
elphiashttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/SJDfrkr9K3/19:05
tomreynDoow: thanks for reporting back, and glad you found a workaround.19:06
elphiasaccording to the howto i found, that command should fix my issue19:06
elphiasbut it says operation not permitted19:06
ioriaelphias, v4l2-ctl --list-devices19:06
tomreynkorabcenaj: hmm i guess you can start with     dpkg -l *:arm64    to get an idea of what you installed19:07
tomreynkorabcenaj: to share it:    dpkg -l *:arm64 | nc termbin.com 999919:07
elphiasioria, USB 2.0 Camera: USB Camera (usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.2):19:08
elphias/dev/video019:08
elphias/dev/video119:08
tomreynkorabcenaj: to share it:    dpkg -l *:arm64 2>&1 | nc termbin.com 999919:08
tomreynkorabcenaj: the latter is correct19:08
korabcenajtomreyn https://termbin.com/12lj19:09
korabcenajBtw, how can I tag you?19:09
tomreynkorabcenaj: you just did, justmention my nickname19:09
tomreynkorabcenaj: so you have none installe,d just remove the architecture then:  sudo dpkg --remove-architecture arm6419:10
korabcenajtomreyn I just did it19:12
korabcenajSo, now should I try to upgrade it again?19:12
elphiasioria, any ideas how to fix this?19:13
tomreynkorabcenaj: not yet. first:   sudo sed -i '6,8d' /etc/apt/sources.list19:13
korabcenajtomreyn Ok, what next?19:14
tomreynkorabcenaj: and then let's see this again:    sudo /bin/true && cat &>/tmp/aptlog < <(sudo apt-get -y update 2>&1; apt-cache policy 2>&1; sudo apt-get -syV full-upgrade 2>&1;); nc termbin.com 9999 </tmp/aptlog && rm /tmp/aptlog19:14
ioriaelphias, can you test this :  it will record a short video; wait 10 secs and kill it then : ffmpeg -f v4l2 -framerate 25 -video_size 640x480 -i /dev/video0 output.mkv19:14
korabcenajtomreyn https://termbin.com/ql3p19:14
tomreynkorabcenaj: do you know what PPAs are?19:15
tomreyn!ppa | korabcenaj19:15

elphias)a, here's the output of cli (19:15
elphiasCannot open video device /dev/video0: Operation not permitted19:16
ioriasomwthing wrong then19:16
elphiasyes, i'm not sure what happend v.v19:16
tomreynkorabcenaj: you have 3 PPAs configured. PPAs and packages (and package versions) installed from there are not supported by ubuntu, can cause upgrades to break. I suggest you use ppa-purge to remove those PPAs.19:16
elphiasor how to fix it, i recieved help from a few people and something went wonky19:16
tomreynoh19:16
ioriaelphias, stat /dev/video019:16
elphiasioria, https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/F84ZnTQH3c/19:18
elphiasit would seem that somehow root got ahold of things, i don't remember doing that19:18
ioria0777 ?19:18
elphiasis there a way to change it to my user?19:19
elphiasthis may be the kink in my issue19:19
korabcenajtomreyn My internet got disconnected. :/19:19
ioriaelphias, have you changed the permissions ?19:19
elphiasnot that i am aware of19:19
elphiasi'm not even sure how to do that O_o19:19
korabcenajyes, I know. I understand, not fully but I just know that we need them to install programs19:19
elphiasis there a way to correct this?19:20
ioriaelphias, /dev/video0 should be 0660 not 077719:20
elphiasstrange19:20
ioriaelphias, again i suggest to quickly test from livecd19:21
tomreynkorabcenaj: you have 3 PPAs configured. PPAs and packages (and package versions) installed from there are not supported by ubuntu, can cause upgrades to break. I suggest you use ppa-purge to remove those PPAs.19:23
tomreyn!ppa > korabcenaj19:23
ubottukorabcenaj, please see my private message19:23
tomreyn!ppa-purge > korabcenaj19:24
korabcenajtomreyn but what !ppa-s? Should I specify something?19:24
tomreynkorabcenaj: https://termbin.com/ql3p lists the following PPAs: http://ppa.launchpad.net/graphics-drivers/ppa/ubuntu http://ppa.launchpad.net/linuxuprising/java/ubuntu http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/java/ubuntu19:25
elphiasioria, how do i use the live usb to fix this issue? are there commands you can give to me?19:27
elphiasor is it self fixing19:27
tomreynkorabcenaj: i just realized we need to also undo the sources.list changes the upgrades seems to have already applied to your system. you need to do this before you remove the PPAs.19:27
tomreynkorabcenaj: sudo sed -i 's/eoan/disco/gi' /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*19:28
ioriaelphias, just boot the livec and run the ffmpeg cmd or start guvcview or cheese (this one might have a bug)19:28
tomreynkorabcenaj: once this is done, run this again:  sudo /bin/true && cat &>/tmp/aptlog < <(sudo apt-get -y update 2>&1; apt-cache policy 2>&1; sudo apt-get -syV full-upgrade 2>&1;); nc termbin.com 9999 </tmp/aptlog && rm /tmp/aptlog19:29
korabcenajhttps://termbin.com/7ud019:29
korabcenajtomreyn'19:29
korabcenajtomreyn19:29
tomreynkorabcenaj: now use ppa-purge19:31
korabcenajtomreyn only ppa-purge ?19:32
tomreynkorabcenaj: i'll tell you shortly. do you have a very current nvidia graphics card?19:33
korabcenajYes, GTX 1050.19:33
tomreynkorabcenaj: okaythen leave the graphics-drievrs PPA installed for now, and just do:    sudo ppa-purge ppa:linuxuprising/java; sudo ppa-purge ppa:webupd8team/java19:34
korabcenajtomreyn sudo: ppa-purge: command not found19:34
tomreynkorabcenaj: once that's done, install all the pending updates:   sudo apt update && sudo apt -V full-upgrade19:34
tomreynkorabcenaj: you need to install ppa-purge first19:35
tomreynkorabcenaj: usdo apt install ppa-purge19:35

tomreynkorabcenaj: sudo apt-add-repository universe19:37
tomreynkorabcenaj: after adding the universe repository, install ppa-purge, then run the ppa-purge commands provided above.19:38
tomreynand finally do the apt full-upgrade as provided above19:38
tomreyni'll be back in 5 minutes19:39
korabcenajtomreyn sudo ppa-purge ppa:webupd8team/javaUpdating packages listsPPA to be removed: webupd8team javaWarning:  Could not find package list for PPA: webupd8team java19:39
korabcenajOkay. THank you so much man. You were great. :D  I have to go now. I'll try to manage by myself from now on.19:40
tomreynkorabcenaj: be careful with commands from some third party websites, be sure oyu know what they do19:44
tomreyn!man | korabcenaj19:44
ubottukorabcenaj: The "man" command brings up the Linux manual pages for the command you're interested in. Try "man intro" at the  command line, or see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal | Manpages online: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/19:44
tomreynkorabcenaj: your systemwas in a rather bad state there, and you still have a lot of pending updates now, and more cleanup may be needed before an upgrade can work without braking19:45
bougymanwhat happened to apt-file ?19:48
bougymandid anything replace it? working on my first 19.10 box and it's unavailable19:48
bougymanoh, now it's here. weird.19:49

smalltalkhey guys I recently installed ubuntu 19.10 on a new dell inspiron 7580 (128gb ssd and 1tb hd) and it went without errors, but every now and then writing to the disk stops working and reboots to initramfs, where I run fsck and it fixes some badblocks and everything is fine for a while, until it happens again... anyone has any suggestions?20:44

cuddylierI have a Ubuntu 16.04 server running QEMU that has HTTP downloads limited to only 12.5 - 15MB/s for no obvious reason. Outbound HTTP works full speed as well as other protocols. Any ideas?20:50
cuddylierNo iptables rules, confirmed for definite.20:50
zmagiisup20:57
zmagiihow do you set night mode in ubuntu20:57
pragmaticenigmazmagii, There are a few version of Ubuntu supported at any time. Please provide more details about which version of Ubuntu you are running (keeping in mind it is important to include the full version number YY.MM)21:00
tomreyncuddylier: could be a 100 mbps interface, or a link operating at this speed.21:07
cuddyliertomreyn: Link is definitely gigabit, speedtest cli shows gigabit speeds and outbound HTTP works up to gigabit speeds too, matching the port speed of gigabit.21:08
cuddylierI booted the server into rescue cd and it gets full inbound HTTP speeds so it's just an issue with the Ubuntu install.21:08
tomreyncuddylier: so you tested this between the vm and a remote system?21:09
cuddylierI'm testing on the host system itself which has the issue21:09
cuddylierTested pulling from both remote systems and systems within the same network.21:09
cuddylierAll are restricted to 12.5 - 15MB/s inbound speed21:09
FevixMy laptop has a physical "Help" key. HOw do I turn this off so Ubuntu stops opening help? I already have the shortcut key disabled in Settings.21:11
compdoccuddylier, dont use virtio nics or storage21:11
tomreynso inbound http to the ubuntu 16.04 system is a problem, but not inbound http to an alternative OS installation running on the same hardware, did i get this right?21:11
cuddylierCorrect21:12
tomreyncuddylier: did you try a different protocol, did you try iperf?21:12
cuddyliercompdoc: as in do or don't? I've always experienced virtio has much better than the alternatives but regardless, this testing isn't even inside a VM anyway. Inside the VMs also see the same speeds the host sees.21:12
cuddylierYeah, other protocols work fine, speedtest cli does, I haven't tested iperf yet but I can.21:12
compdoccuddylier, they will cause weird problems, like suddenly going very slow.21:13
cuddyliercompdoc: Just on ubuntu I take it?21:13
tomreynmaybe try iperf with different ports, maybe try the latest 16.04 and 18.04 live isos21:14
compdocthats all I use to run VMs, but its possible on other distros21:14
tomreyn(to rule out your own customizations as a source of the problem)21:14
