ducassegood morning07:15
=== jelly-home is now known as jelly
lotuspsychje!snap09:29
ubot5Snaps are containerised software packages similar to flatpaks or appimage. For more info, see https://snapcraft.io09:29
lotuspsychjethink there was one09:30
TJ-hmmm09:30
lotuspsychje#snappy09:30
TJ-Found the issue with the broken juju charmed install of kuernetes... they're running the snap core unconfined and it is causing its copy of /usr/bin/ssh to be linked to the host's libpthread.so ... which doesn't contain a symbol 'ssh' expects. The libpthread.so in the snap isn't being used because of the LD_LIBRARY_PATH !09:31
TJ-Thanks lotuspsychje  you're a star as always09:31
ducasse#snapcraft should also exist09:31
ducasseat least it did09:32
lotuspsychjethats confusing, whats the difference between the 2?09:32
ducassei _think_ #snappy is partially about ubuntu core too09:33
lotuspsychjewich of the 2 would fit best in the factoid?09:33
ducasse#snapcraft, probably09:34
TJ-yeah; got them now... alis didn't being them up for a search of *snap*09:35
lotuspsychje!snap is <reply> Snaps are containerised software packages similar to flatpaks or appimage. For more info, see https://snapcraft.io and #snapcraft09:36
TJ-aha! it's because I surrounded the argument with ' makrs09:36
TJ-e.g. not '*snap*' but simply snap09:37
lotuspsychjeima snap noob :p09:38
TJ-this is a pretty major problem... incompatible libraries between host and snap core... and on the to-be LTS releasing next month!09:41
TJ-this is what happens when core services are taken outside the packaging/testing/QA system09:42
lotuspsychjeand the server installer revamp too..09:42
lotuspsychjethink that gonna give fireworx/bugs09:42
TJ-dunno not touched the installer; easier to use debootstrap!09:42
TJ-this 'fad' for hiding techy stuff behind a gui is getting out of hand - this JuJu / conjure-up creates a fancy TUI and when it is bootstrapping the Juju controller into an LXD container puts up a python animated progress indicator which has no relevance to the fact the thing died in the background. 20 minutes later it fails and suggests a log file to look at which says it timed out after09:44
TJ-waiting 20 !! minutes doing nothing09:44
lotuspsychje: o09:44
TJ-Personally I'd take these devs out behind the barn and shoot them!09:44
TJ-Dev ops my arse!09:44
lotuspsychjethat sounds yikes09:46

knightwisebeen tinkering around with a second hand Lenovo Yoga I got online. Put ubuntu on it and getting the final touches ready10:57
lotuspsychjefinal touches as in 20.04?10:57
knightwise18.04 , i'm an LTS man :)10:58
knightwisehave you played around with it ?10:58
lotuspsychje20.04 is also lts :p10:58
lotuspsychjeyeah im running it10:58
knightwisemajor improvements or just a good polishing ?10:58
lotuspsychjei always help bug out lts in early stages10:58
knightwisebless you :)10:58
knightwiseI mostly run windows / OSX on my systems but I have about 3 different ubuntu servers running in the house10:59
lotuspsychjewell, they predicted it was going to be a release without much changes, but in my opinion, theres some nice goodies already inside10:59
lotuspsychjelovely10:59
knightwiseah nice :)10:59
knightwiseYeah , looking forward to upgrading the yoga10:59
lotuspsychjefaster gnome, new themes, new snap software, new extensions app, amazon icon out,...etc11:00
knightwisethe interface is nice. For work I mostly run windows and osx but I use a lot of WSL if I can.11:00
knightwiseSnaps are de-light-full11:00
lotuspsychjenot everyone likes snaps, but in some cases they can be yeah11:00
knightwiseI have been listening to the ubuntu uk podcast for a while , popey got me into snaps big time :)11:01
lotuspsychjeah great11:01
knightwisethey are especially nice when you make your own post-install script11:01
knightwiseyou dont need to add repositories and repository keys and stuff , so that is cool11:02
lotuspsychjeyou a dev?11:02
sixwheeledbeastI see the application for them but I don't agree with switching default packages to snaps.11:02
knightwiseIT Manager and Project manager ,11:02
lotuspsychjesixwheeledbeast: yeah, i dont like taking the choice away neither11:02
knightwiseIf I can write a bash script a dinosaur can dedode i'm happy11:03
knightwisesixwheeledbeast: Snapps are replacing debs ?11:03
knightwisethat is a big difference with other debian distro's11:03
lotuspsychjesome packages come snap as default on ubuntu now, is what he means11:03
lotuspsychjelike the snap software will be on 20.04 for example11:04
sixwheeledbeastIt was mentioned in IRC that a handful of packages that come with 20.04 will be snaps as default.11:04
lotuspsychjebut on 18.04 there are also11:04
knightwisewell, if you select software from the store its sometimes hard to spot de difference between a .deb and a snap11:05
lotuspsychjeyeah id wish they divided that11:05
sixwheeledbeastI have removed snapd from my 18.04 so i won't be getting snaps.11:05
knightwisefor the end user it doesnt make a lot fo difference.11:05
lotuspsychjeknightwise: it does, cause some snaps come broken by default11:05
knightwiseah :( THAT is indeed true. But isnt the same true for deb apps ?11:06
lotuspsychjeso the user will sometimes install a software that doesnt launch11:06
knightwiseor is ther better vetting and testing for those11:06
lotuspsychjei havent seen much broken packages from apt yet11:06
lotuspsychjebut there surely also are yeah11:07
knightwisetrue. I have been trying out a few snaps because I wanted a youtube download interface that was simple and reliable11:07
knightwiseso far no luck11:07
knightwiseso i'll just stick to youtube-dl11:07
sixwheeledbeastThere are a few wrappers for youtube-dl11:08
lotuspsychjesnap find youtube shows some list11:08
knightwiseyeah i tried a few but as you say : a lot of them are broken11:08
knightwiseSo i decided to write my own little (simple) script to capture the different app options11:08
lotuspsychjeyeah, so thats the bad part about it, the user gets stuck with broken software11:08
knightwiseI download quite a bit of video material and audio from youtube. Love to do that11:09
lotuspsychjei see11:09
knightwisethe only thing i miss is a decent stable command line based youtube player11:09
knightwisemps-youtube used to do that wonderfully but the package today is terribly broken11:09
lotuspsychjeknightwise: cant vlc play yt from cli?11:10
lotuspsychje!info streamlink11:11
ubot5streamlink (source: streamlink): CLI for extracting video streams from various websites to a video player. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.10.0+dfsg-1 (bionic), package size 34 kB, installed size 151 kB11:11
lotuspsychjeor^11:11
knightwisewell, playing the urls is not realy a problem. Its more that mps-yotube had a coulple of very cool ways to search and build playlists11:11
lotuspsychjeah i see11:11
lotuspsychjegonna grab a lunch first here11:14
knightwisebut i'm mananging today :) I copy the urls of the video's I want to keep in 2 textfiles (one for the video download , the other ones for the audio only download) then I have 2 youtube-dl scripts that parse the files , download the video's , convert them to the right format and then clear out the files11:14
knightwiseme too :) Catch you guys on the flipside _11:14
lotuspsychjeidle around and we meet again :p11:14
knightwiseok :) nice chatting with you guys _11:14
lotuspsychje; )11:14
