Simonious_I'm trying to get an older machine running (AMD FX-8320 in a Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P) and so far I'm just booting off of the ubuntu install DVD (18.04.4) and it is failing to bring up the network via built in ethernet, ethernet card or wifi card.04:50
lotuspsychjeSimonious_: wich chipset are they?04:51
Simonious_there is a realtek and an AMDtech, the wifi card isn't in there at the moment.04:51
lotuspsychjerealtek chipsets can indeed be a bit flaky with some kernel versions04:53
lotuspsychjeSimonious_: is it a recent iso with the HWE kernel?04:53
Simonious_lotuspsychje: today's, I also tried with last week's, same behavior.04:54
lotuspsychjeSimonious_: if you say its an old chipset, i assume newer kernel might have issues with it, maybe an iso with kernel 4.15 could bypass this04:55
lotuspsychjeSimonious_: dont you have a wifi dongle laying around to help you?04:55
Simonious_hmm, I do have a wifi card, but that failed too04:56
Simonious_and both NICs in the machine are failing04:56
Simonious_I feel like I'm missing something04:56
Simonious_I do have some other NICs04:56
lotuspsychjewich chipset is that wifi?04:56
lotuspsychjeif its a broadcom drivers are on the install medium to use04:56
Simonious_RT3062F04:56
lotuspsychjeouch yeah04:57
Simonious_I also have an old 3Com card here04:57
lotuspsychjeRT is also pretty picky on kernels sometimes04:57
Simonious_I haven't actually tried the 3com yet, may as well04:57
lotuspsychjeSimonious_: yeah try to bypass the install with connection, and update to latest, might also help04:58
Simonious_what does that mean? I haven't started an install yet04:58
lotuspsychjemeaning try out different network cards till you are connected04:59
Simonious_ahh04:59
lotuspsychjeits usually a good idea to install updates during the setup04:59
Simonious_if the 3COM doesn't work, I'm gonna have to dig deep, I don't have any others out04:59
Simonious_right!04:59
Simonious_which is why I haven't started an install04:59
Simonious_at least in part04:59
lotuspsychjeSimonious_: try to boot into a live before install, so we can see network related errors too05:00
lotuspsychjeSimonious_: volunteers can help you better from a live, to see whats happening05:00
Simonious_ahh, I actually have 2 3com cards here after all, those always used to be pretty well supported05:00
lotuspsychjegreat05:01
lotuspsychjeonce system installed and up to date, we can also try to fix your internal cards05:02
Simonious_that would be good05:02
Simonious_I guess it doesn't much matter if I have to use a slot for a NIC though05:03
Simonious_If these 2 3COM cards don't take, I may just order something modern05:03
=== beaver^ is now known as beaver
Simonious_so strange, I mean it recognizes the NICs right there in the GUI network setup05:13
Simonious_but it fails to activate them05:13
lotuspsychjeSimonious_: some cards might have a glitch there, you need to retry disconnect and connect05:14
Simonious_I guess one more 3COM card to try, but I feel like I'm missing something.. I'll try that before I reboot for the last card I guess05:14
Simonious_Hmm, well no luck with the 3COM cards, maybe I'll try grabbin a USB wifi dongle from my desk at work tomorrow or Monday05:39
Simonious_still super weird how it sees the NICs, but can't connect05:39
Bashing-omSimonious_: spared off the cable ?05:43
Simonious_I have two cables connected to the switch now05:43
Simonious_one in each NIC05:43
lotuspsychjeSimonious_: you sure you dont have other network troubles atm?05:43
Simonious_well.. I'm using the same switch to chat w/ you now05:44
Bashing-omSimonious_: Reduce to simpler terms - bring the system up with but one NIC connected ?05:44
Simonious_that's where I started05:45
lotuspsychjeSimonious_: that sounds weird, your network icon says connected but dont have internet?05:45

Simonious_these have never shown connected05:46
lotuspsychjeok05:47
Simonious_it's always: connect: network is unreachable05:47
lotuspsychjeSimonious_: try to reach the live before install later, so we can debug05:47
Simonious_hmm?05:48
Simonious_live is booted now.05:48
lotuspsychjeoh05:48
lotuspsychjeSimonious_: journalctl -f from terminal, and see the errors while trying to connect05:48

p0aHello I got an error that says "Ubuntu 19.10 has experienced an internal error" from /usr/bin/gnome-shell11:40
p0aI've been told before I may be having a failing hard drive, but I Am wondering if this is connected to it11:41
p0aI see it might be a popular recent bug, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/186622211:47
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1866222 in gnome-shell (Ubuntu) "GNOME Shell crashed with signal 11" [Undecided,Incomplete]11:47
StevenJayCohenI think I may have found a bug (and a workaround). I'm looking for someone else to check it out. Set up a dark theme for Gnome. Set Chrome to use GTK+. See the dark background/dark text bug on suggestions for text boxes...12:10
uebera||Hi. What exactly should I look for if "mini-dinstall -v --batch" tells me "mini-dinstall [140499871676160] WARNING: Skipping "/mnt/shared/packages/pbuilder/archive/mini-dinstall/incoming/buildah_1.14.5~74_amd64.changes"; upload incomplete", but dput previoulsy told me everything had been uploaded?12:11
StevenJayCohenWorkaround: Launch Chrome with --force-dark-mode and re-check it. You will see light text on dark background.12:11
StevenJayCohenBUT: Once someone has tried this, I found an odd way to launch Chrome that doesn't respect .desktop files.12:11
StevenJayCohenThe not respecting .desktop files is either an Unbuntu bug or a Debian bug, I'm not sure which.12:12
StevenJayCohenThe rest of it is a Chromium bug, I know that. And I will submit it there.12:13
lotuspsychjeStevenJayCohen: we cant file bugs against chrome as its not on the ubuntu repos, you can for chromium though12:29
StevenJayCohenThat isn't the issue. Once you see that works, I can explain the Ubuntu specific issue.12:31
StevenJayCohenlotuspsychje:  Using search to launch Chrome behaves 1 way and using the dash to launch Chrome behaves differently12:32
lotuspsychjeStevenJayCohen: then feel free to file the ubuntu bug about this?12:32
StevenJayCohenThis means that the Dash is not respecting the .desktop files for launching purposes12:32
StevenJayCohenYes, I found it using Chrome, but the issue is global (not limited to 1 app)12:32
StevenJayCohenlotuspsychje: I am looking for someone here to confirm that I have it right. That there is an error.12:33
lotuspsychjeStevenJayCohen: its not bug #1732482 that you have?12:35
ubottubug 1732482 in chromium-browser (Ubuntu) "[snap] doesn't properly save desktop files for "create shortcuts" action" [Medium,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/173248212:35
StevenJayCohenchecking12:36
StevenJayCohenNo. Not using Chromium. And .desktop files ARE getting created. The issue is launching ANY app from search respects flags in the .desktop while launching the very same app from the Dash (Favorite) does NOT respect the flags set within the .desktop file.12:38
lotuspsychjeright12:39
StevenJayCohenCan get the same result using any app that has a flag like --fullscreen etc. Searching for the app and launching will respect the flag. Launching from Favorites on the dash will NOT respect the fag written into the .desktop file.12:39
StevenJayCohenSo Favorites on the Dash are not using (respecting) the .desktop files.12:40
StevenJayCohen19.10 fresh install12:40
lotuspsychjeStevenJayCohen: cant seem to find a bug related to that right away12:44
StevenJayCohenlotuspsychje: That's why I was looking for a second person to confirm the bug before I submit it12:45
StevenJayCohenlotuspsychje: Do you get the same behavior?12:45
lotuspsychjeStevenJayCohen: im on 20.04 devel right now12:46
StevenJayCohenlotuspsychje: The bug could still exist in 20.04. In fact, if it does, it is more important to check.12:47
lotuspsychjeStevenJayCohen: what do you want me to test?12:47
StevenJayCohenlotuspsychje: Yes, I would appreciate that.12:48
StevenJayCohenlotuspsychje: Find any app that can take a flag at startup (like --fullscreen)12:49
StevenJayCohenadd that flag to the .desktop file12:49
StevenJayCohenlaunch the app from a search using the Super Key (should respect the flag)12:49
StevenJayCohenadd the app to the Favorites on the dash12:49
StevenJayCohenlaunch from Dash (If bug exists: it WON'T respect the flag you set previously)12:50

sammyg1321Hello guys, i have a question, i installed my NVIDIA 710 graphics card and the drivers from the Additional Drivers tab but i was playing teewords and its running horrbily, is there any way i can reinstall the driver from scratch?18:54
CroranWhat's the best way to get these UFW BLOCK messages out of my dmesg?18:58
OmegaRidleyI'm trying the 20.04 beta image from Friday, and after I install the ubuntu-restricted-extras repository, I can't login back from the login screen anymore. I could confirm that it starts happening after I install that package. Anyone knows if that is a known issue already?18:59
Croransammyg1421: use apt purge to remove the relevant packages and then reinstall from Additional Drivers.19:00
OmegaRidley*package, not repository19:00
calamariCroran: Wish I knew that too! I ended up having to add this alias to shut it up, but it wasn't really satisfying: alias dmesg='dmesg | grep -v "UFW BLOCK"'19:00
sammyg1321so for reinstalling do i just do like go back to NOVEAU Drivers and then back to NVIDIA? @Croran19:01
sammyg1321@Croran, because i typed purge but again im not sure im doing this right19:01
sammyg1321Can i do it with a package manager like synaptics?19:02
Crorancalamari: thats fine but eventually your dmesg 'fills up' and then your grep -v will give you a blank screen19:02
Croransammyg1321: well... you have to 'sudo apt purge <space-separated list of relevant packages>'19:02
Croransammyg1321: you might try 'sudo dpkg --list | grep nvidia' to find the relevant packages19:03
calamariCroran: Correct. It's not really the correct answer, but it works for a while19:03
sammyg1321+1 il try that @Croran but again with Synaptics would that be the same thing then apt-purge19:03
Croransammyg1421: synaptics? oh you're talking about synaptic package manager. synaptics is a touch pad.19:04
ducasse!ubuntu+1 | OmegaRidley19:04
ubottuOmegaRidley: Focal Fossa is the codename for Ubuntu 20.04 - Support only in #ubuntu+119:04

sammyg1321sounds good gonna look at it now thanks il be back inn a few19:04
calamarisammyg1321: In synaptic you can mark the packages for complete removal. Note that it won't mark dependencies that it's removing that way, so you'll have to go Custom Filters > Marked Changes to re-mark those as Complete Removal too.19:06
sammyg1321@calamari, amazing, so they have all been removed from what i can see, i assume a reboot is in order with the Nouveau driver this time before reinstall?19:07
Croranalso 'sudo dpkg list | grep ^i | grep nvidia' will give you only the installed packages19:07
Croransammyg1321: eh. I'm always skeptical as to the need for reboots. that's a windows thing.19:08
luna_sent some more suggestions for translations in the ubuntu-wallpaper-2004 package19:08
sammyg1321so just reinstall right away?19:08
sammyg1321@Croran,19:08
Croransammyg1321: i would. if you want to restart anything, maybe restart X after you install the new driver.19:08
calamarisammyg1321: You can also remove then in the normal way with Synaptic, and then go to Status > Not install (residual config) and mark those for Complete Removal after the fact19:08
Croransammyg1321: just ctrl+alt+f1 to switch to a tty and then sudo service gdm restart if you want to restart X19:09
sammyg1321jsut gonna check residual config really quickly @calamari @Croran and yea i wont reboot if i dont need to, will likely reinstall and then reboot once everything is done19:10
calamarisammyg1321: If you're just experimentally removing a package to see if it will solve a problem, I wouldn't purge it, because you lose settings19:10
Crorancalamari: those settings could be a source of a problem though.19:10
calamariPerhaps19:11
sammyg1321@Croran, @calamari nothing left in residual so im gonna now re-fire the driver19:11
sammyg1321i assume the 435 is our best bet right?19:11
Croransammyg1321: another thing to consider here is which version of nvidia you're running. personally i've encountered issues with certain versions of the ubuntu/nvidia proprietary package19:11
Croranpersonally, I've settled on 435, yeah.19:11

oerheksyou should have mentioned docker with the first question.20:08

pavloslmat: it could be libpng16-1620:17
lmatpavlos: I wish it was as simple as   "use libpng-dev to compile, use libpng to run" :-) I suppose it will be a bit more work to find the run-time versions of these other 10 packages, too!20:19
oerheksnormally a package like minecraft server pulls that in. so, you are on your own, manually.20:21
lmatoerheks: Makes sense. Oh yeah, I guess I can take a look at the deps of the minetest-server package...if there is one. Thanks for that!20:22

BarnabasDKis it this one ? https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=libpng16-1620:23
BarnabasDKif you are compiling you want the dev package though20:24
lmatBarnabasDK: The whole compilation is complete and good. I'm trying to figure out what is needed for running. I tried installing all the same packages but with out "-dev", but it didn't work.  https://paste.rs/ZMO20:25
BarnabasDKthe std packages on ubuntu will drag in the regular package for any -dev pkg in my experience20:26
lmatpragmaticenigma: Yes, I understand that.20:26
BarnabasDKsay libjpeg20:26
lmatBarnabasDK: So maybe I should look at the deps for libjpeg-dev to find libjpeg (or its equivalent)?20:26
pragmaticenigmalmat: since libpng is included by default in official Ubuntu distributions. There should be no need to compile it yourself, and compiling it yourself may still be overridden the version that should already be installed. If libpng isn't there, then I would assume that you are not using an official Ubuntu distribution, therefore you are in the wrong place to be asking for help. The volunteers here rely on documentation for the20:27
pragmaticenigmaofficially released flavors of Ubuntu. Docker images are not officially released by Canonical or Ubuntu. They will come with highly customized environments and you are encouraged to reach out to the group of developers responsible for it's creation.20:27
BarnabasDKif you install libjpeg-dev that will also be installed20:27
lmatpragmaticenigma: Oh, I'm sorry, I'm not compiling libpng. I'm trying to install libpng so that my program will work. I compiled my program with libpng-dev. I think I'll be okay now. If I have any more ubuntu problems, I'll let you know!20:28
lmatBarnabasDK: cool, thanks!20:28
BarnabasDKlmat, that only goes for libs in the supported packages though20:32
BarnabasDKthat is the ones in the std libs20:33

lmatBarnabasDK: When you say std libs, I think of C++ standard library :-) Supported packages are lib* packages in official ubuntu repositories?20:33

BarnabasDKoutside that ppl may do all kinds of hokus pokus20:34
lmatOf course.20:34
lmatYou know, I think my big hang up is these version numbers in the package names. I keep thinking "libpng16-16!? What are these version numbers for? Just give me the latest one." But that must be from my experience with archlinux, and doesn't make sense in a debian world. Thanks again for all your help!20:36

r3duxHello, I have noticed when using i3 on my laptops battery power the mouse starts to get glitchy and slows down. I am on ubuntu 19.10, everything works fine in gnome (wayland) with no issues as well as inside of i3wm with the machine plugged in. But, as soon at it is unplugged from power the trackpad AND bluetooth mouse start to get slow and glitchy... what could be causing this?21:44
matsamanr3dux: could be GNOME's power manager software has it configured the way you want on top of the defaults (which perhaps are not what you want)21:45
barnexhello, which package from this ppa (https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa) should be used for: "02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM204 [GeForce GTX 970] (rev a1)"?21:46
matsamanr3dux: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=209911 (2016) blames a kernel version21:47
r3duxmatsaman: I think you could be right. I am using gnomes power-manager inside of GNOME (obviously) and xfce4-power-manager inside of i3.21:48
r3duxIs there a way to turn off gnomes powermanager while in an i3 session but keep it while in a gnome (wayland) session?21:49
matsamanbarnex: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-390 maybe21:50
matsamanbarnex: that is: <=391.3521:50
r3duxAlos, I am running jake day's linux kernel for surface devices... it has worked great, it seems this issue has just come out of nowhere, I thought it was maybe from installing and configuring xfce4-power-manager but even if i disable it I still am getting major trackpad and mouse lag21:51
matsamanr3dux: but if you switch to GNOME it's fine?21:52
r3duxexactly, perfectly fine... also, when the machine is plugged in to power it is perfectly fine. When I un-plug it it lags hard for a minute or two than speed up to roughly 70% funtionality... I mean it works, but there is very noticable lag that would make you not want to use the mouse or trackpad at all. If you slide you finger across the trackpad the mouse will dissappear for a seccond and21:54
r3duxreappear at the other side of the screen21:54
matsamanweird21:54
matsamanbut probably just a power saving feature that gnome is overriding21:54
matsamanfigure out if your touchpad is usb based or something else21:55
matsamanthen look at disabling the power saving features for that connection21:55
matsamanand for bluetooth / peripherals21:55
r3duxhow would i go about doing that?21:55
matsamanor if you're going to keep having gnome installed, maybe just get its power manager going from i321:55
r3duxin xinput my trackpad is simply called Mirosoft Surface Keyboard Touchpad21:56
r3duxget its power manager going from i3? sorry, I don't understand.21:56
matsamanr3dux: cat /proc/bus/input/devices | grep -i pad21:57
matsamanGNOME's power manager is just software like everything else; you can have it running while you're using i3. The only issue would be if you plan on removing GNOME21:58
r3duxI have been unable to figure out how to power gnomes powermanager inside of i3... which is why i grabbed xfce4-power-manager... do you know what it is called? the only thing power related rofi pulles up is gnome-power-statistics but it doesn't open inside of i322:00
r3duxcat /proc/bus/input/devices | grep -i pad returns 'Name="Microsoft Keyboard Touchpad"'22:02
matsamanr3dux: maybe if you apt-get install tlp, you can use this stuff: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/touchpad-is-only-working-when-the-laptop-is-connected-to-a-charger/78453/322:03
r3duxI am already using tlp... I keep finding other accounts of people saying that their trackpad doesnt work while plugged in or not plugged in... mine works, just really really bad. As if it is under some extreme load or something which its obviously not.22:07
matsamanwhile plugged in is a worse problem, IMO22:08
matsamana grounding problem, I have heard, for example22:09
matsamanyours is a configuration issue only22:09
r3duxI agree, can I run tlp persistent default setting from the terminal to test it? If so, do you know the command?22:10
r3duxI'm reading the link you sent.. it looks like someone suggested that but it looks like it is a line that is supposed to be added to a config of some sort.22:11
r3duxI just plugged into power and IMMEDIATELY it works better... I definatley think that you are on the right track. Boy would I love to solve this22:12
r3duxmatsaman: I changed the TLP_PERSISTENT_DEFAULT=0 to 1 in /etc/default/tlp and it didn't seem to have any effect...22:16
matsamanr3dux: the one I linked suggested changing the value and restarting the service, IIRC22:16
matsamanthe tlp service22:17
r3duxafter I changed the line I did "sudo systemctl disable tlp" followed by "sudo systemctl enable tlp"22:17
r3duxam I missing something?22:17
r3duxsudo tlp start returns "TLP started in AC mode" even though its un-plugged at the moment so I am gussing that I did it right... but the issue persist. Same thing, glitchy on battery and smooth as soon as its plugged it.22:19
r3duxUnless I am doing something wrong..22:20
r3duxmatsman: I just tried a reboot to make sure that tlp services were being restarted and the problem still persist... now that I am paying attention to it its not just performance of the trackpad, scrolling long configs in vim using the keyboard are also laggy on battery power.22:31
r3duxmatsaman: At least now I am sure that it is software related as it immediatley starts working better within 1 second of being plugged into power... just need to figure out what is causing this and how to go about correcting it.22:32

pragmaticenigmaeelstrebor: suggest that you only check things that you actually need to clean, and make sure you do not have anything checked under the "System" category. if you didn't notice "memory" is one of the items in there and bleechbit will try to fill RAM with bogus data to attempt to "clean" it22:59
