BSC_Hi everyone! I am running Ubuntu 18.04 on a Lenovo Thinkpad that I put to sleep over the weekend, which is normally no problem and I can resume work on mondays with more than 50% of battery left. This weekend was different, though and the machine was off. Turning it on resulted in a black screen and a frozen keyboard (after grub etc) so I07:10
BSC_hard-reset and started recovery mode. There I wanted to see the "system summary" which caused it to "started discard unused blocks" .. how long does that usually take, because it's been sitting there for 20 mins at least now with no sign of progress ...07:10

matsamanI'm not sure why Ubuntu would offer a jetty9 package that doesn't set an env var that might be required to work, but it probably has something to do with Java being really weird08:27

leftyfbRoseBus: why would you prefer to use a password over ssh keys? If you have ssh keys, you should disable keyboard authentication over ssh14:56
RoseBusleftyfb, setting up ssh for the first time on my NAS, dont have keys enabled yet, server is rejecting connection because ssh is attempting to use all the keys in my ~/.ssh14:56
leftyfbRoseBus: if the keys fail, it will ask for your password if it has keyboard auth enabled. You should check to make sure it is14:57

nesoiright, so that's my point: automatic updates to a production machine seem like a bad idea20:36
oerhekstrue20:37
oerheksalways roll out on a test server.20:37
oerheksthe same server you test your backups on ;-)20:37
oerheksand you can hold snap updates, to a conveniant time.20:38
sarnoldat least with snap you can schedule when you'd like that to be https://snapcraft.io/docs/keeping-snaps-up-to-date20:38
sarnoldso you aren't stuck with solely apt purge snapd20:38
sarnoldbut if you'd rather control your entire infrastructure, snap is probably not (yet?) for you20:38
nesoioerheks:  what backups?20:39
oerhekssoftwarecenter > installed > (snapname) > permissions # often gives tons of options, mic/webcam/disk/networking20:39
nesoimic / webcam are not really germane to these servers :)20:40
nesoiis ubuntu really focusing on the desktop?20:40
oerhekssome do backup. some backup the backups too...20:40
oerheksserver, desktop, cloud, kubernetes, juju openstack..20:41
oerheksiot.. ingenious or terrible20:41

Mibixmy servers keeps giving me these alerts with the subject "Cron <root@mibix-module>    cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly" and the body "/bin/sh: 1: Cannot fork"20:49
Mibixhow do i fix that?20:49
Mibix*server20:49
graingert!ask20:51
ubottuPlease don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience20:51
oerheks 1 Answer. If you see the (CRON) error (can't fork) message, it means that: your system is running out of memory. cron can't create the process (due to high memory)20:52
=== Wryhder is now known as Lucas_Gray
oerhekssome try to fix that with unlimited ulimit..20:53
vimartHi all21:10
cnnxi've been tried to reinstall mysql-server mysql-client for over a week and cant21:25
cnnxdo i need to reinstall ubuntu?21:25
cnnxor can this be fixed for sure?21:25
cnnxdpkg: error processing package mysql-server (--configure):21:25
cnnx dependency problems - leaving unconfigured21:25
vimartgpg: keyserver send failed: Server indicated a failure21:26
vimartThat what I'm getting when: gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --send-keys 1111121:26
Mibixoerheks my system memory usage is below 80% though21:27
Mibixmy swap is almost 100% though21:27
oerheksMibix, seen that, with a vpn service and irc bouncer21:28
Mibixdont have vpn or a bouncer running :/21:28
oerhekswell, cron has insufficient memory to do the job.21:29
Mibixim confused though21:29
Mibixif my physical memory is only at 80% what do i need to change21:30
MibixI can add more ram sure but I am not sure that will help21:30
oerheks100% swap sounds like some service is under heavy load21:30
Mibixis there an easy way to cehck oerheks?21:34
EriC^^Mibix: check what is using the memory21:34
Mibixtop thing is sabnzbd21:35
Mibixat 1.2gb21:35
kgbseems like it's a one-off trial? https://www.newshosting.com/usenet/partners/sabnzbd/21:37
kgbplus does it require CC to even enter? that's not FOSS and nowhere near :))21:37
Mibixheh that didnt free up much of the swap shutting it down either21:38
EriC^^Mibix: what does 'free -h' look like right now?21:38
Mibix              total        used        free      shared  buff/cache   available21:39
MibixMem:            23G         13G        1.2G        4.0G        9.0G        6.1G21:39
MibixSwap:          2.0G        1.9G        133M21:39
EriC^^Mibix: ok, 6G available, you should be good now21:39
Mibixheh i mean it was like that before21:39
EriC^^you dont really know that, did you try 'free -h' at the time of the cron error?21:40
EriC^^Mibix: for your swap to have 2G in it, it means at some point linux found that there's not enough memory to run smoothly21:42
kgb'tis what happens when we get these "wonderful" new "features", like auto-mem management (APIs, or whatever); back in the day it was simple AND standard: software ITSELF had to be not only memory-aware, but also courteous to (various) other systems21:48
Mibixno i guess ill just grab some more ram though lol21:48
kgbyea, take it all21:49
kgb"it'll be fine"21:49
vimartI'm pushed to use some mail client. I used to use in 90s Kmail, what's good today?21:50
kgblike imagine a news reader (text!!) taking up 1.2 GIGABYTES, yo.. what is that; like 90% of it some advertising-systems and product placement, telemetry and who-knows-what21:51
kgbcan'21:51
kgbcan't support that kind of whatever it is21:51
Mibixlol this pc3-10600R is so cheap21:51
Mibixi should just get 96gb21:51
kgbheh. :)21:52
kgb"tools" allowing every-nobody to form a team and put out some software, blah21:53
kgbsony data breach, yahoo hack.. and NO repercussions - nobody responsible; i had lost like a business account w/Yahoo that set me back.. whatever, i've never recovered from that - and then TWO YEARS later, they admit it had been a hack, meh.21:57
kgbwhen was it like ~10 yrs ago21:59
kgbtucked me into their fake safety net, when i didn't know any better22:00
EriC^^Mibix: it could be something else, it's odd that much ram is being filled up maybe some program has a memory leak?22:02
EriC^^Mibix: from this thread is sounds like it should barely have some mb's as memory https://forums.sabnzbd.org/viewtopic.php?t=2370222:03
Mibixoh no sabnzbd isnt using much at all after i restarded22:03
Mibixi restarted it before i posted that memory stuff though22:04
EriC^^Mibix: it could be something else other than memory, have a look here at the comments https://askubuntu.com/questions/966496/cannot-fork-for-cron-jobs-but-ulimit-and-ram-looks-fine22:05
EriC^^Mibix: for what it's worth, i tried to fill my memory up completely and run a cronjob, it gave no errors, i used dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/shm/mem bs=4M count=1000 to fill it up22:08
Mibixheh22:09
Mibixit only started happening a few weeks ago and i dont remember changing anything22:09
Mibixhttps://pastebin.com/e1WgexE222:14
EriC^^Mibix: what does this give "ps aux  | awk '{print $1}' | grep root | wc -l" ?22:17
Mibix37022:19
EriC^^Mibix: doesnt sound like its hitting the process limit22:21
EriC^^Mibix: maybe write something that monitors the stuff for a day and when it happens again see the logs22:22
EriC^^Mibix: while sleep 300; do date; free -h; ps aux | awk '$1 == "root"' | wc -l; done > ~/memps.log 2>&122:25
EriC^^Mibix: that should take a snapshot of it every 5mins22:25
oerheksFiles remain in Watched Folder22:26
oerheksThe "Watched Folder" sometimes fails to delete the NZB files it has processed.22:26
oerheksThis happens when other software still accesses these files.22:26
oerheksSome third-party utilities supporting SABnzbd are known to do this.22:26
oerheksWe cannot solve this problem, because the Operating System (read Windows) prevents the removal. SABnzbd does try about 10 times with 5 second intervals, but after that it gives up.22:26
oerheksThe NZB will not be processed again, unless changed or overwritten.22:26
EriC^^Mibix: apparently ps -eLf shows all the threads, so you could also do ps -eLf | awk '$1 == "root"' | wc -l to see root's threads22:28
EriC^^(in the monitor/log)22:28
oerhekshttps://sabnzbd.org/wiki/introduction/known-issues22:28
Mibixi am not even sure its sabnzbd btw22:28
Mibixthat was just the program using the most memory at the time i checked22:28
oerhekshtop would tell ..22:28
oerheksthat 100% swap gave me a clue22:29
Mibixit usually happens on sundays22:30
Mibixwhich is probably the largest ram day22:30
Mibixsince there are a ton of new shows downloading and the most people watching on plex22:30
Mibixill get some more ram soon22:30
WesleyTechHello folks! We're seeing an issue with the official Canonical Ubuntu Cloud AMI's that are published to AWS. There are 2 microsoft repositories defined that result in warnings being logged every time apt is used. How can we report this issue to the appropriate team?22:46
oerheksWesleyTech, 'warnings being logged every time apt is used'  can you paste an example? paste.ubuntu.com22:52
WesleyTech@oerheks will do22:53

sarnoldWesleyTech: could you file a bug here? https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-images/+filebug thanks22:57
WesleyTechWe see this Warning ~10 times in our logs every time we run a deploy due to the usage of apt in our scripts. Will do on filing a bug on Launchpad, thanks!22:57
oerheksmicrosoft-prod is current, the other one is old?22:57
WesleyTechI don't know which is current22:59
oerhekshttps://packages.microsoft.com/config/ubuntu/18.04/23:00

oerheksyou might want to edit your ami id, serial23:34
oerheksWesleyTech, ^^23:35
sarnoldif I've understood amazon correctly, those are the important bits needed to find out what's affected, no?23:35
oerheksregion will do?23:35
