alegarodHi. My Ubuntu Server kernel hasn't been updated by apt for a few weeks. Current installed version is 5.4.0-42-generic. Is that the version I should have?04:16
k_szeHas anybody experienced weird mouse scroll behaviour in Ubuntu 18.04 (x86-64) where using the mouse scroll wheel would sometimes cause the page to scroll all the way to the bottom?04:18
alegarodSorry, didn't mention Ubuntu Server version. Is 20.04.04:19
rjwiiik_sze: you need a new mouse ... :)04:25
k_szeI don't think it's a problem with my mouse.04:25
k_szeIt's not like my mouse is issuing scroll events too quickly or something like that.04:26
k_szescrolling in games still work as expected.04:26
rjwiiik_sze: you'd be surprised04:27
k_szeIt's that at least some applications seem to respond weirdly. VS Code is definitely one of them. I can't remember whether Firefox does the same.04:27
rjwiiik_sze: mice fail in weird ways ... have you tried a different mouse?04:27
k_szeMy laptop also has a trackpad. If I can reproduce the same weird scrolling behaviour using the trackpad, then I know the problem is not with my mouse per se.04:32
k_szeI just don't use my trackpad enough to notice. I'll try more often.04:33

rbnmHi! Grub problem at new install on dual boot. Windows made the EFI partition with NTFS and grub2 doesn't recognize it as EFI and I think grub2 doesn't work on NTFS EFI partition. Which would be the best solution? Reformat EFI with VFAT and recopy its contents? If I do that I would be able to boot windows again? Thanks.10:14

tatertotzCuChulaind: and 13GB "used"16:46

jellyCuChulaind, because there's lots of space in LVM VG that's not allocated to a LV.  you need to grow the LV and the filesystem for /16:48
tatertotzCuChulaind: it's how the disk was provisioned for use16:48
tatertotzCuChulaind: also realize you're looking at lsblk instead of https://termbin.com/elig16:48

tatertotzCuChulaind: this is what space you actually have to work with https://termbin.com/elig16:49
CuChulaindjelly, how do I grow it?16:49
jellyCuChulaind, this is good, because it allows for more flexibility.  This way, you can resize the LV when you need it, you can create snapshots, you can create temprorary new LVs and filesystems and delete them later16:50
CuChulaindOr rather how do I do a re-install of this fresh OS to take advantage of the entire drive?16:50
CuChulaindjelly indeed, but for now I want / need to grow the current lvm to bigger than 200GB16:50
jellyCuChulaind, if you want to eg give 100G more to this ubuntu installation's / filesystem and the LV underneath, you'd do:16:50
jellyCuChulaind, lvresize -L +100G -r /dev/ubuntu-vg/ubuntu-lv16:51
jelly... as root16:51
jellyI strongly suggest not giving ALL the space to that LV and filesystem right away.16:52
jellyCuChulaind, do you need more than 174GB _right now_?16:52
CuChulaindjelly, thank you! I got as far as sudo lvresize -L +100G but not how to target16:52
jellyif you're going to need more/lots of space temporarily, you could create a new LV and new filesystem instead16:53
CuChulaindjelly, I do. Using half the space now works for me :)16:53
jellybecause it's very easy to extend an existing LV and filesystem, but it's very hard to reduce/shrink it16:54
CuChulaindjelly, thank you!16:55

jellyCuChulaind, output of "df" command is more readable than "mount" if you need to figure out device (/dev/...) names for mounted filesystems16:55
jellydf /16:56
jellyFilesystem           1K-blocks     Used Available Use% Mounted on16:56
jelly/dev/mapper/vg0-luna  75213960 68236288   3563952  96% /16:56
CuChulaindNow I see that df lists the LVM under /dev/mapper/xxxx16:56
CuChulaindI was missing that before16:56
jellyyeah, /dev/mapper/vg0-luna is basically the same thing and /dev/vg0/luna16:57
jellys/and/as/16:57
jellyit's okay to use either path with lvextend / lvresize16:57
CuChulaindjelly, very good to know, that I can leave out the mapper16:58
jellyyou can't merely leave it out, there are slight differences16:59
CuChulaindah16:59
Betalisn't mapper supose to be internal usage ?17:01
jellybut /dev/VGname/LVname is the canonical path and is supposed to always exist; names under /dev/mapper/ vary slightly; if there's a - in the name of either VG or LV, then it gets doubled17:01
leftyfbtatertotz: df only shows mounted filesystems17:01
leftyfbtatertotz: df is not a good tool to use to troubleshoot drive sizes17:01
jellyBetal, sure, but if you recognize the desired device it's easier to just copy/paste /dev/mapper/vg-lv than to manually type in /dev/vg/lv17:02
tatertotzleftyfb: I'm aware df shows mounted filesystem17:04
tatertotzleftyfb: can't use anything that is "unmounted" or N/A17:04
leftyfbtatertotz: I correct17:04
leftyfbincorrect *17:05
leftyfbtatertotz: as jelly pointed out by discovering it was an LVM volume that just needed to be resized17:05
dbristowubuntu 18.04.5 and its minions are now available17:11
dbristowalthough for some reason cdimage.ubuntu.com doesn't have its usual files17:11
dbristowhad to get it from mirrors.mit.edu/ubuntu-cdimage17:11
dbristowAhh, figured it out.  ftp://cdimage.ubuntu.com is no longer synonomous with http://cdimage.ubuntu.com17:12
jellyleftyfb, that was visible from lsblk output17:15
leftyfbjelly: right. That was the correct tool to navigate. Which is what CuChulaind posted originally17:15
jellylsblk shows nested block devs and sizes and LVM LVs have recognizable device names17:16
dbristowI like lsblk17:16
nbusroneAnyone know how to run a single command at every startup ? like  (  xrandr --output DVI-0 --brightness 0.5 )17:16
dbristowI also like ncdu17:16
dbristowNot all 18.04.5 minions are availble, for example ubuntu-budgie doesn't have 18.04.5 yet17:19
CuChulaindlsblk was easier for me to pinpoint the lvm, but not the full path of the mount obviously17:19
dbristowHave to wait a few hours, I guess17:19
jellyis it really mandatory to log in to see raw paste content on paste.ubuntu.com17:19
tatertotzleftyfb: was that LVM user created or as a result of selecting encryption or something in the ubuntu installer? the unencrypted 20.04 installation i just did doesn't use LVM?17:20
tatertotzleftyfb: nvm..if the user had created it he probably would be aware of it's capacity17:21
dbristowHmm, it appears that lsftp http mode can't correctly parse http://cdimage.ubuntu.com for some reason17:29
dbristowGoing to have to use wget17:29
jellytatertotz, lvm is probably the best option for a laptop or workstation until something like btrfs or zfs becomes 100% reliable and safe17:34
dbristowjelly: I hear fedora 33 is going to have btrfs as the default filesystem for new installs17:38
jellyfedora has historically pushed new tech onto their users, I still remember free work done by fedora users making selinux policies actually useful (and used later for RHEL)17:41

genkgoI am having a networking issue. The problem is that I cannot connect via SSH to my VM on its local address unless I remove the external interface. I feel this has to do with routing, but I do not have the knowledge. If someone could help to get this working at runtime, that would be appreciated. Since I am using cloud-init/proxmox, persistency of this setup is the step afterwards.21:25
genkgoSo the two network interfaces are both with static IP. Connections from the machine to the rest of the world works, and I can also connect to the internal work. Reaching the machine with SSH on its public IP works. So the only problem is reaching the machine with SSH on its private IP.21:30

aumsarnold, that's ok for putting it into the fix pipeline, I'll do that, but is there anything I can do now to limit it? I'm on a machine with just 4GB RAM, and the 20.04 install only allocated 2GB swap21:54
