[02:15] Hi Guys, I recently upgraded my main Workstation from 18.04 to 20.04. However, I'm now experiencing delays with KDE specific apps (I don't know if I'm describing it right actually). … Example 1: … In Yakuake, I "cd" to a specific directory, then I right click "Open File Manager", but I experience quite a bit of delay for the app to open, and when it opens, the frame of dolphin opens, but I can still see the background of Yaka [02:15] - it takes some time to repaint it. But when it opens, it feels normal. … Example 2: … I hit 'Alt + F2' to open up Krunner, and when I start typing (anything), it takes quite a few seconds for anything to show. But when it starts typing, it feels normal. … Any idea on how I can get this more responsive like it was before? [02:27] hi [02:47] hi === fahim is now known as fahim_ === leaftype2 is now known as leaftype [04:36] what am i missing about setting up wallpapers in plasma? it's only allowing me to select from PNG images, not jpegs. [04:37] oh [05:01] amanda-: still at it? [05:05] yes. didn't get an answer before i had to go to bed last night, and nothing since i went to work, so here i am. [05:06] alas, i don't get to play with it when i'm working. [05:06] sorry i didn't get back, fell asleep last morning since i work nightshifts only. I'll fire up a live session and have a look [05:07] cool, thanks [05:12] amanda-: i can load a jpg file and apply it as background without any issue [05:15] so i can add a single image in folder view. what i can't do is select a folder for slideshow mode. [05:17] and now it's magically working. i have no clue what changed, except that i did a dist-upgrade a bit ago because i had some post-install updates pending apparently. [05:17] it doesn't like the size of my folder tho. that's fun. === Lord_of_Life_ is now known as Lord_of_Life [05:19] ah, it unfroze. note to self: plasma doesn't like folders with 90k images in them. [05:19] maybe i'll fix that at some point. [05:28] what kind of pre-processing is it doing on these files? switching my second head to slideshow mode has frozen everything except xchat. [05:29] great. plasmashell crashed, leaving me with xchat and nothing else. [05:30] did you reboot after you updated? [05:31] no, i didn't get a prompt to do so and i generally have never had to unless i updated the kernel. [05:31] need to punch it, brb. [05:34] that's a long reboot [05:35] well, that sucked. [05:38] it does NOT like this. [05:38] what [05:40] rebooted. the login took (relatively) forever, i guess because of the large size of my backgrounds folder. now i'm trying to set up the wallpaper for the second (of three) screen, and when adding the folders to slideshow mode, it freezes plasma. xchat works because i opened that before i started messing with the wallpaper settings, but (for example) the menu doesn't work anymore. can't hit the right click menu on any of the three heads anymore, either. p [05:40] lasma is just DRT -- dead right there. [05:42] i'm ... disappointed. [05:44] is there like a known upper limit to the number of images in a folder the software can handle? [05:44] the large size of the folder has nothing to do with it, it's not like Windows that slows down after a while. Either you've been meesing too much with the system or something else is borked. [05:45] SSD or HDD? [05:45] hdd [05:45] rather, ~ is HDD, / is sdd [05:45] ssd [05:45] CPU and RAM? [05:47] i think there's 16 gig of RAM in here. the hdd light isn't blinking, which suggests it's not flogging. i'll reboot again and run a cpu monitor before i mess with the wallpaper settings again and see if it pegs something. [05:47] brb [05:53] oh, 32g of ram apparently. that's nice to know. you can see how hard i use the machine, that it matters or something. [05:55] not sure why you have that many issues..... [05:56] i5-6660 on a gigabyte board. it also significantly stalls on login. [05:56] last thing i can come up with that it might be grapics card related. [05:56] i guess. is there something funky i need to install for nvidia? [05:57] i have a gtx 1060 [05:58] Maybe the driver.... if no driver is installed then you run on the open source Nouveau which isn't that great iirc. [05:59] i only have Intel since a few years so i'm not really able to help with nVidea related stuff [06:01] i mean, i don't have much invested in this setup, i'm happy to wipe and reinstall if that's what it takes. [06:02] amanda-: look in Software Sources at Additional Drivers [06:06] okay. some google-fu helped me install nvidia-driver-450. reboot time. bbiaf. [06:13] okay so it's absolutely plasmashell choking on this large directory. i added a small(ish) one, and it worked okay. i added the very large one, and it's spiked one core to 100%, and the rest of the system has come to a screeching halt. [06:17] then you have to do it with the small one and live with it. :) [06:18] i'll divide the bigger one into small ones. midnight commander to the rescue. [06:20] omg, who came up with this color scheme for midnight commander? kill me now. [06:22] once upon a time i sent a guy a pic of my tits in exchange for writing a script that would do this file move stuff really quickly. alas i lost it several server moves ago. very disappointed in myself. [06:24] O_o [06:24] hey, when you can't write bash scripts very well, you use what you've got [06:25] there's a offtopic channel if you like to talk about other non support related things [06:25] #kubuntu-offtopic and #ubuntu-offtopic === enick_996 is now known as lordievader [06:39] Good morning === MmikeM is now known as Mmike [07:47] Hi all [07:51] I tried to search on the web but I didn't find anything, probably wrong keywords... By now, KDE on X11 doesn't support fractional per-screen scaling, so I use to have it through xrandr... However when I do scale my second 4k monitor (the first one is a 2k) to 1.25x1.25, the kde panels in the second display become very "slow"/glitched, i.e., when I click either the menu button or any window to be minimized/restored I wait [07:51] ~2seconds in order to get the action done... The first display is rather pretty good as without any scaling set... [07:58] I believe wayland does a better job at this. Switching to wayland is not an option? [08:10] lordievader: not until I can't share my displays during skype (or similar softwares) calls [08:12] moreover, I don't believe the state of art for kde on wayland is stable enough for "busy" guys... === ubuntu is now known as Guest1641 [12:06] Hi all === balln- is now known as psychocoin [13:03] Hi all! I need to know what the default contents of /etc/environment are supposed to be [19:46] @Invictus1718, Kubuntu 20.04 LTS [19:47] It'd be great if someone could share it as a text file or something [19:49] Needed to add Flutter SDK path somewhere in there, and since then it refuses to boot; login loop :/ … Trying to fix it by using shell and editing the etc/environment file but for some reason it shows as blank😑 [20:19] @Invictus1718, https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/66XkQYx22r/ [20:32] Hi there [20:33] I have an odd behavior since today for my mouse pointer. I have a focal fossa kubuntu 20.4 version, regularly updated. It worked seamlessly till today. [20:35] I have two monitors and my mouse insists on jumping often to an area around the left upper part of the left screen. This seems to happen randomly but frequently, which renders its use impracticable. Have you got any ideas? [20:36] Right now, for instance, I am struggling to have this chat, via Konversation. I am essentially limited to Konversation last field (for entering text only) [20:37] Does anyone know whether some recent update might have spoiled something? [20:38] I guess I have done two of them, via Discover, today. Also I tried changing the mouse, without success [20:38] Any hep is greatly appreciated! [20:39] @DarinMiller, Thank you.... editing the environment didn't solve my problem though :/ … Still stuck at the same login loop. Tried adding another user and logging in but doesn't work either [20:41] Is there another way I can boot? Or at least manage to salvage my files and do a fresh install thereafter? [20:41] The mouse really seems to be stuck around the same area mentioned above. I am only able to move it a little but then it typically goes back to that point. Even when I am able to move it somewhere else, it stays there very briefly (around 3 or 4 seconds at most) [20:42] I also notice it stays there, at the same point (left upper part of left screen), but there is some slight shivering once in a while. Any help please? [20:44] Are my posts visible there? [20:45] Please give me some feedback anyway [20:47] Is anybody out there? [21:04] @mocalvao, I have no idea how to help.
