=== Glassjoe is now known as funnycalzoneman [02:34] good morning to all [04:08] I've got a noob question, I've got 5 laptops I'm trying to cluster for a project. I've installed python3 on all of them but some have 3.8.2 and others have 3.8.6 as installed from the repo when I added deadsnakes ppa... can someone explain why and maybe a clue to how to fix it? [05:24] gimzmoe, are all running the same release? different releases can have different versions of packages even with PPAs [05:25] that's what started this mess, but I upgraded. I think... I've sorted something out, I'm stripping the python3 from each of the machines and starting over. it's not fast or pretty but it's progress [17:31] welcome xMeia [17:31] what r we discussin? [17:31] thanks [17:31] xMeia: currently not much, you can start a topic :p [17:33] Give me some of your best tips on software to download and what they do [17:34] What is good/bad about Xubuntu (I am on it) in regards to other distributions? [17:34] xMeia: wich version of xubuntu? [17:34] latest [17:35] lts or non-lts [17:35] what does that mean? im new to this [17:35] and how do I check it? =) [17:36] xMeia: i always install these: preload, haveged, gnome-tweaks, dconf-editor, vlc, qbittorrent, stacer, bleachbit [17:36] xMeia: lsb_release -a [17:38] commando wont work [17:40] cat /etc/os-release [17:41] look for VERSION="..." [17:41] 20.04.1 LTS (Focal Fossa) [17:41] the latest ubuntu is an lts in any case [17:41] What is LTS [17:42] long-term support [17:42] ubuntu releases twice per year every year [17:42] ah, thats good [17:42] not everyone likes upgrading their machines that often [17:42] therefore once every two years a release is designated the current Long Term Support release, and is supported for 5 years [17:42] (non-LTS releases are supported for 9 months) [17:43] Ok, still very much 2 learn on linux so LTS for me should fit fine I think [17:43] support == software updates are made available with bugfixes and especially security fixes [17:45] how do I configure preload with say.. Firefox [17:46] xMeia: preload you can just install and reboot, after that its all automatic [17:47] nice =) [17:47] Sittin on an old laptop I breath new life into so it will be nice [17:47] and haveged, can it help me anyhow? [17:48] xMeia: also the same, install reboot done [17:48] explain some software and stuff for me that I could have good use for if you'd like and what they do [17:48] xMeia: i highly reccomend stacer, as it can help you tweak on older machines, shred files, tweak systemd services etc [17:48] Ok [17:49] is it automatic or do I manage manually? [17:49] xMeia: stacer has different sections, some automatic some manual tweaking [17:52] xMeia: like on older laptops and other cases, i disable braille, cups, openvpn, bluetooth [17:52] depends on your personal case ofc [17:55] how do I do it? [17:55] maybe let bluetooth be there still as I might use a speaker for it [17:57] xMeia: click the services icon on the left and disable your unwanted services [18:01] nice with stacer! [18:01] openvpn I cant find haha [18:01] the other ones is off! [20:18] any tips for performance software on linux to an old laptop? (4gb, dual core 1,8GHz) [20:18] software isn't going to polish a turd [20:22] just tweak the hardware max poss [20:22] tips? [20:22] using Xubuntu XFCE 20.04.1 LTS [20:51] such patience [21:19] doesn't look good for using a slow machine..
