pcmc3aHi, I have been using Lubuntu for around 5 months now, without any issues.05:20
pcmc3aToday, while booting up, my screen flickered and I saw a bunch of messages.05:21
pcmc3aSomething like 'process on hold while startup job finishes', 'kernel crash report' etc. I was able to sign in to my system after a few attempts by tapping the return key at bootup when those messages appeared. Has anyone faced a similar situation? Thanks.05:22
chietais there any livecd for testing?07:39

cool_skeleton_95my laptop has significant screen tearing, how would I fix that?  I am using a i7-3720QM CPU and Nvidia NVS 5200M GPU.16:58
lubot<Michaël Van Bogaert> @cool_skeleton_95 [<cool_skeleton_95> my laptop has significant screen tearing, how would I fix tha …], is compton enabled?17:03
cool_skeleton_95I don’t think so, how would I do that?17:07
lubot<kc2bez> You can enable it in the session settings. We have some information in our manual: https://manual.lubuntu.me/stable/3/3.2/3.2.13/session_settings.html?highlight=compton17:10

cool_skeleton_95Thanks!  One more question: once I enable it, is there any kind of configuration that I need to do to ensure that the issue is resolved?17:13

cool_skeleton_95I have started Compton on my computer, and was just noticing that when using Firefox, that scrolling through webpages felt a little 'jittery'.  Is this a known side effect of Compton?18:26
cool_skeleton_95Its not a big deal, i was just wondering.18:27

Svante_AGood day!18:59
Svante_ASo, I updated my Lubuntu laptop last night, version 18.04.5, and today, after a reboot, it no longer loads properly.  I just get some kind of eternal loop with a flashing screen after initializing19:01
Svante_AAfter the update, it did say something about no more support for 32 bit systems.  Is this my problem?19:01
cool_skeleton_95Lubuntu 20.04 does not support 32-bit19:01
cool_skeleton_95operating systems19:01
Svante_ASo, I inadvertantly upgraded to 20.04?19:03
cool_skeleton_95I'm not sure, I thought that was what you were implying when you say you updated19:06
Svante_AHaha, I ran apt-get update. Didn't figure it would try and install a whole new version.19:07
Svante_ANo soup, huh?  I'll keep trying repairs.  Bizarre problem.19:17
Pascal_Bhello everybody, I've just installed 20.04 LTS and I'm not able to reboot. When I launch it from LXDt, the screen seems to freeze on the dark window19:33
Pascal_Bwith points of progression19:34
Pascal_Bcould you help me please ? Thanks19:34
Pascal_Bnot LXDt but LXQt...19:36
Svante_AHmmm... Well Pascal_B, that seems pretty similar to my problem.19:41
tomreynSvante_A: "apt-get update" doesn't make any changes to the installed software19:56
tomreynift just rfreshes the liust of available software packages19:56
tomreynit just refreshes the list of available software packages  << same, but with less typos19:56
Svante_ASure, then you run the Software Updater, right?19:56
Svante_AHaha, yes, I gathered.  Quick typing anyway. ;)19:57
tomreynupdate-manager itself also installs updates only, by default, though it may offer you to start a release upgrade if one is available.19:57
Svante_ABy now, I have run the upgrade, and may have done so last night.  Can't remember.  It gave me the message about 18.04.05 having limited life and something about no continued support for 32 bit systems...19:58
tomreyndo you know whether you had a 32-bit lubuntu installation, thgouh?19:59
Svante_ASure did.19:59
Svante_AHad to.  It's a 32-bit laptop. ;)20:00
tomreyni'm not familiar with this very message. ideally, 18.04 i686 should not offer a release upgrade to 20.0420:00
Svante_AHmmm, interesting.  I have left to just try a reinstall.  Just hoping it would be easier.20:01
tomreynbut indeed, the support span of flavours is often shorter than for the main flavour20:01
tomreyn!eol20:01
ubottuEnd-Of-Life is when security updates and support for an Ubuntu release stop. Make sure to update Ubuntu before it goes EOL so you get updates promptly for newly-discovered security vulnerabilities. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOL and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases for more info. Looking to upgrade from an EOL release? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades20:01
tomreynlubuntu 18.04 LTS is supported until april 202120:02
tomreynafter this point, the only way to get continued support for i686 is to switch to install ubuntu 18.04, which would provide support until 202320:03
tomreyn- "to switch"20:03
tomreyni do not know whether ESM will provide support for i686 18.0420:04
tomreyn(my guess is "no")20:04
Svante_ARight.  Good.  Well, it leads me back to my current issue, then.  It goes from GRUB, to the splash screen, to the quick login script... Then the monitor just seems to toggle on and off, with a little harddrive flashing, ad infinitum.20:06
Svante_AI "nomodeset" the splash screen so I could get to the command line, and THAT works.  Meaning it's LXTE?20:13
Svante_ALXDE, rather?20:14
Svante_ACommand line says I still have 18.04.5, BTW.20:17
krytarikRather it indicates that there might be issues with the graphics driver.20:18
* tomreyn randomly guesse son nvidia20:23
Svante_AUm, Intel 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller20:27
Svante_ARight, so, it worked before my last update.  Any idea about why it doesn't now?20:50
Svante_AI'm still having trouble launching the GUI in Lubuntu 18.04.5 after my last update.  I don't really know where to go from here.  The command line works.22:19
wxlSvante_A: i would honestly suggest you start thinking about another distro. once april rolls around, the entirety of the ubuntu project will be without a single distro supporting 32 bit and packages are very limited.22:23
wxlSvante_A: that said, if you want to diagnose this further, assuming "the command line" is a virtual terminal, it sounds like you have x running, so that's good. dig around in the logs (/var/log or use `journalctl`) and see if you can find any errors22:24
Svante_AThanks.  That's a mess.  Might just reinstall from the boot disk.22:56
