ralpho-beansGood afternoon. Trying to install Xubuntu, is there a way to manually configure the partitions during install?21:42
ralpho-beansThe something else option says you can create and resize parts but it doesn't let me make changes21:44
gnrpralpho-beans: Yeah, the custom partitioning?21:57
gnrpI can't tell you the exact words righ tnow21:57
gnrpralpho-beans: I checked it right now. It is called "Something else" here... very helpful description, yes^^22:20
gnrpbut that's wha tis coming when it detects a windows alongside22:21
ralpho-beansRight, problem is grub install is failing, thought if I could add a /boot I could fix that but 'something else' isn't letting me modify/delete/add partitions :0(22:25
tomreynralpho-beans: try partitioning from the live / installer system before you start the installer22:26
ralpho-beansIs gparted sufficient for that?22:26
ralpho-beansLooks like the install wants to force a LVM scheme that this machine doesn't support. (Toshiba Satellite M50 from ~2005)22:27
tomreynwhat makes you say it doesn't support this?22:30
tomreynToshiba Satellite M50 had 512 MB RAM installed insitially (though there are several different models). how much does yours have now?22:31
ralpho-beansI think it's 512, can't check at the moment.22:36
tomreyni doubt this would be enough for installing xubuntu22:36
ralpho-beansWell, I had hoped.22:38
tomreynhmm, actually, https://xubuntu.org/requirements/ says 512MB is the absolute minimum.22:38
ralpho-beansI was hoping to get something on it.22:40
ralpho-beansAnd I had used Xubuntu years ago, liked it.22:40
tomreynkeep trying, i have not found a reason it should not be possible22:41
ralpho-beans:0) will do22:41
tomreynchances are that your 15 year-old hdd is just falling apart, though22:41
tomreynwhich xubuntu were you trying to install there?22:42
tomreyni just tried booting the xubuntu 20.04.1 installer with 512MB RAM in a VM, and it ran into a critical error trying to unpack the initrd.22:46
tomreynworks fine with 1 GB RAM.22:47
tomreynthat is, the installer would not even boot.22:49
tomreynso i assume the 512 MB info is no longer current (it may still apply to 18.04 LTS)22:50
tomreynralpho-beans: fwiw, 1 GB seems to work fine, i just finished the installation, booted to it.23:10
ralpho-beansBIOs check is counting 1.407MB ram, so that should be ok23:12
Unit193Yes, last I knew 512M vbox wouldn't even unpack initramfs.  I have a system with 1G of ram though and as long as you don't extensivly use firefox it's fine (but I mainly use it headless.)23:18
ralpho-beansdeleted partitions via GParted, starting install....23:20
