gandsnutAny suggestions for a non-SQL, non-server/client database application, preferably with GUI (for U 18.04 MATE)?02:22
=== zbenjamin_ is now known as zbenjamin
sarnoldgandsnut: it sounds a bit like you're looking for an MS Access-alike?02:25
sarnoldgandsnut: if that's what you're after, look at the libreoffice-base package -- https://www.libreoffice.org/discover/base/02:27
kk4ewtlibreoffice-calc was my first thought02:27
gandsnutsarnold:  Perhaps, though I've already tried, I think it's 'Kexi'.  I'm frustrated with LibreOffice's Calc & Base, BTW...02:27
cupofcodeHey, some time ago there was a software update and Nautilus now shows directories as tree view. I can't figure how how to change them back to not tree view.02:28
gandsnutLO Base seems quirky in its SQL implementation.02:28
sarnoldthese folks are kind enough to have screenshots :) http://www.kexi-project.org/screenshots.html02:28
matsamancupofcode: probably from the edit/preferences type menu area, or the view one02:28
matsamancupofcode: less likely but possibly from dconf or gsettings or something02:28
sarnoldthough this kind of looks like it's running on windows 98 http://www.kexi-project.org/pics/1.1.2/user_mode.png02:29
gandsnutI may try Kexi again, but dunno...02:29
cupofcodeI'm running Ubuntu 20.04. Yah, I looked there and under Views there's a "Tree View Defaults" with "Show only folders", I unchecked it but the tree view remains.02:29
cupofcodeI looked through all the menus in preferences and can't find anything that will switch it back.02:30
gandsnutI'd hate to run Windoze in a VM just to get more database app options02:31
cupofcodematsaman: I'll try that, thanks.02:32
gandsnutThanks for the ideas.  Bye02:32

gebbionegood morning folks, how safe is the upgrade from 18.04 to 20.0410:12
gebbionemy 18.04 keeps asking for it, but i am not sure as ofter i end up troubleshooting non working stuff for hours if not days10:13
lotuspsychjegebbione: before jumping to upgrades, its always safe to think about a few things first10:13
lotuspsychjegebbione: make a backup in front, make sure your apt doesnt spit out errors, see if you dont have too messy system with external ppa's and manual debs, see if your system is up to date10:14
lotuspsychjegebbione: another good idea is checking your next wanted ubuntu version releasenotes to see existing bugs/package changes etc10:16
gebbionei have data backup for all that is needed, not apps or configuration. That bit is risky. At the moment when i run updates i do get this http://imgur.com/9Lp270Ll.png . I am sure i have quite a few PPAs and unsure on the impact of upgrading on them. Maybe i should check if there are new versions ones?10:17
gebbioneand also manual or snap installations10:17
gebbioneincluding make based (so compiled), .deb and snap10:17
lotuspsychjegebbione: lets try a: sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade first on your 18.0410:18
gebbionedoesnt a full-upgrade install 20.04?10:30
lotuspsychjegebbione: no, full-upgrade completes all updates on your current ubuntu release10:31
lotuspsychje!uptodate10:31
ubottuTo ensure you have all the latest known patches and security updates for your ubuntu installation, please update with the following command: `sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade`. See also !upgrades and !security; you may also need to run `apt full-upgrade`.10:31
gebbioneso this is what i see before accepting it https://termbin.com/ooj210:33
gebbioneok it also wants to update nvidia drivers :/ thats tricky10:34
lotuspsychjegebbione: yep, that looks good, proceed with Y(es)10:34
lotuspsychjegebbione: after the updates, sudo apt autoremove10:35
gebbioneit is asking me to restart now10:45
gebbioneshould i avoid the autoremove for now?10:46
lotuspsychjegebbione: restart first sure10:46

KurozenAgh I need to disable SWAP to see if it gets rid of the horrible lag13:02
KurozenUbuntu 18 and 20 on very different machiens seem to have a big bug, they don't necessairly put a lot of memory to sleep into SWAP, but after idling for a few hours after 1 day of power-on it's horribly slow to get back in13:03
KurozenIt's the whole KDE gui, all the browser tabs, get disk-sleeped or just unloaded from RAM for no reason really13:06
KurozenThere's no RAM exhaustion, when I use it it's fast and responsive, leaving it idling and coming back is when this happens.13:06
KurozenThis is just I think the consequence of obsession with low-power and efficiency.13:07

ZiolaBleuHey guys, I'm pretty tech savvy but I am still not as experienced as I'd like to be. So I've been trying to setup my own home server, I followed a guide on a Linux website using Ubuntu Server 20 and ISPConfig Beta.14:03
ZiolaBleuI've set it up 9 times so far, restarting the process entirely because I couldn't get everything working how it should. I had email working once but I ended up breaking it by trying to set my wireless adapter to automatically connect.14:03
ZiolaBleuSo here's my problem, for once I kinda understand DNS, but I'm not sure I have it all set up correctly. My site can only be reached by including www. which is fine if I could manager to install the SSL certificate. My email on /RoundCube doesn't allow to send or receive messages Error 250 I believe it is.14:03
ZiolaBleuI actually managed to login to the mail server on outlook and send an outgoing message but when I go to reply, I receive an error address not doesn't exist.14:03
ZiolaBleuSo what I'm trying to do, I want to install a SSL certificate I bought across the entire site including on ISPConfig, Email, Postfix, FTP, SSH, etc. I would also like to get the mail server aspect fixed.14:03
ZiolaBleuI've got everything setup I think, I might have done something wrong, but I am absolutely not against restarting the process entirely if y'all could assist me in setting this up. If I can get it setup and have someone answer a few questions along the way, I would not only really appreciate it, but I won't have to restart over and over again to no prevail.14:03
ZiolaBleuI don't have money, I'm just a simple college student trying to learn and maybe setup a store that is decent some day. But yeah, I'm kinda at the last resort right now; I've really done my very best to try to figure this all out myself but I just haven't been able.14:03

ZiolaBleuAm I able to ever change the nameservers on the actual domain the server is for to the domain itself14:11
=== jelly-home is now known as jelly
TJ-ZiolaBleu: your list of issues implies a LOT yet to learn so I'd suggest tackling one at a time. Figure out the order in which you need to do that and then work down the list. E.g. OS install > openssh-server > SSH certificate login (ssh-keygen, ssh-copy-id) > DNS (bind9) > HTTP (apache2) > X509 certificate (TLS/SSL) with SANs:  "mydomain.org,www.mydomain.org,mail.mydomain.org" (letsencrypt via14:14
TJ-certbot) > HTTPS (apache 2 config) > SMTP server (Postfix in Maildir config and using the X509 certificate) and so on14:14
TJ-ZiolaBleu: if you have access to the domain's DNS Zone file you can control what hostnames the domain uses. Then you have to ensure any service that needs to answer to those hostnames is correctly configured (and can answer to any CNAME/aliases e.g. www)14:16
ZiolaBleuWould you be willing to work with me from the start of that list to the end and sort of explain it14:16
ZiolaBleuhttps://usercontent.irccloud-cdn.com/file/eBeRxR6J/Screenshot_20201114-081642_Chrome.jpg14:17
TJ-ZiolaBleu: I don't have the time; I've got very important server migrations to manage14:17

nikolamSquarism, making sure you have installed drivers? Open source driver is Nouveau (with closed binary blob), but Nvidia makes quality proprietary drivers, available on their site. I'll install "synaptic" package and then find "nvidia" in it, depending what nvidia-number driver is ok for your card, start that first in ubunut packages, so that you are supported, only after that from nvidia site. (an shh AMD GCN+/7000+ have open drivers too)23:41
