RoyKI have a machine (vm in the cloud) running ubuntu 20.04 and used by a set of users mostly for irc traffic (like I am now), so nothing fancy. I just wonder why it's nine loop devices mounted for snaps. I can't find anything running as a snap, really11:24
quadrathoch2RoyK oO the default install should have 3 (core18, snapd, lxd) so look into what you have installed maybe11:29
ograby default snaps keep three revisions on disk (for auto-rollback and such), you can limit that to two via "sudo snap set system refresh.retain=2" (can'T be less than two though)11:39
UssatOr, you can 100% remove snaps as I do, I wont roll out any snaps on servers.11:58
UssatI will not let some random somewhere decide when to upgrade/restart anything on my servers11:59
UssatI still think snaps on servers are a VERY bad idea11:59
Ussatworkstations, IDGAF about..11:59
quadrathoch2idk the only snap I use is livepatch, so I do need snapd installed :/ but yeah outside of that, nope12:01
UssatYa, I dont use livepatch either12:02
UssatAll my systems have scheduled maint windows for patching/reboot12:03
quadrathoch2I do too, but just as a safeguard, for whatever security issue there may be (outside of the window)12:04
* ogra uses *only* snapped services on his servers since it massively uppens security, allows roll-back to former versions if i.e. an update doesnt get along with older config data or has features i dont want brongs true delta upgrades along, has builtin backups and tond of more advantages ... 12:27
ograand if you dont update a server withn 60 days after a security update (which is the update frequency you can pick for snaps) thats rather irresponsible towards everyone else on the internet IMHO12:29
quadrathoch2ogra sadly most snaps I was looking back then into, were the classic installs, so no added security :/12:30
ograuh, yeah, classic snaps are rather a wart ... sadly ...12:31
ogra(they have their use for i.e. IDEs and compilers though but surely not fo any serious server software)12:31
ograthe amont is going down though with more and more interfaces beng added to snapd to allow audited access to system resources12:32
quadrathoch2yeah, I am still going to look in a bit again at snaps (not totally off, as the internet) but yeah, as long as most stuff is in --classic idc12:32
ograso classic gety more rare lately12:32
ograparticulary in the server area classic is rather rare nowadays12:32
quadrathoch2nice good to know :)12:32
