cfaberHas anyone had issues installing 20.04.1 with a usb stick on a system with a cdrom present?03:48
cfaberIt seems to fail reliably when suddenly it goes looking for libc6 on the cd media03:49
cfaber(which isn't present)03:49
guiverccfaber, Yes I have installed on boxes with CD/DVDRW drives without issue --- CD media in the install process means the install-media, regardless of it being on hdd/ssd/thumb-drive/cflash/cd/dvd ...03:56
guiverccfaber, I'd likely switch to a text terminal & check for squashfs errs (ie. read errors on install media; `sudo dmesg |grep squashfs`  ; the copyright/version message is all you should get in response, if you get multiple lines you've bad CD media (ie. media on thumb-drive is faulty)03:58
cfaberI was watching syslog during the install and it was trucking along just fine then suddenly bails out on: plugininstall.py apt_pkg.Error: E:Could not configure 'libc6:i386'03:59
cfaberwhen I look back up in the logging it was trying to pull the package from /dev/cdrom and failing03:59
cfaberI didn't really get too deep into why, I'll check in the morning to see what was actually leading up to it04:00
guivercokay, /dev/cdrom I'd not expect, can't recall seeing that on any QA installs04:00
cfaberyeah I thought it was bizarre as well04:00
cfaberand it's repeatable, I've yet to get this machine to install correctly04:00
guiverccfaber, I pulled up an install log, and I do see "2020-02-26 - 15:48:45 [6]: "/dev/sdb1 /cdrom iso9660 " in installs, but it's not '/dev/cdrom'04:05
cfaberThanks for checking, I plan on digging into this further in the morning, I was hoping that someone had seen something similar in the past to save me the time trouble shooting it =)04:06
guivercsorry... note: my lookup was calamares install (lubuntu) as I can't recall any useful kubuntu install bugs04:07
cfaberthere might be something suspect on this system itself as well04:08
cfaberit's a core2 duo based system from '09 so it's a bit aged =)04:08
guivercI do loads of refs to /cdrom in a kubuntu ubiquity log, none as /dev/cdrom .. my desktop I'm typing thi son is a 2009 dell (c2q though)04:09
guivercmany of my QA installs are on c2d04:09
guivercmy ^ paste was a c2d-e685004:09
guivercs/i do loads of refs/I see loads of refs/ ^04:13

CrellHi folks. I'm trying to install 20.10 via USB key on a new laptop. I'm running into issues with the UEFI setup when I partition it. From ddg-ing, it seems like the issue is the usb key isn't setup for UEFI.  It's a Kubuntu-only machine, so is there any real reason to try to make UEFI work rather than just switching it back to BIOS mode and blasting away everything?19:09
Crell(I already trashed the Windows partitions that were there previously.)19:09
tomreynCrell: uefi *can* make things easier to maintain in the future, like when you want to add another OS, maybe on a different disk. also, firmware upgrades from ubuntu *may* become possible with it, or *can* become easier to handle (not requring windows). depends on mainboard / mobile device manufacturer and their preferences.19:55
tomreynsecureboot is only possible with uefi. but then, it's an open debate as to whether this practically adds a lot of security, and any that is relevant to you.19:56
tomreynalso to consider: some vendors/models/versions have a terribly buggy uefi implementation, for others this is true for bios. YMMV.19:57
CrellLovely. This is a thinkpad yoga, if that matters. So far, trying to disable UEFI in the configuration entirely has failed.  So, I guess I have to figure out how to make this a UEFI boot usb key?19:58
CrellBecause as is it will boot, but I get an error about mounting a vfat partition at /boot/efi from the installer.19:58
GSMarquisTrashing the Windows partition is always the best option. Its not a Lenovo by chance is it?20:17
