Is there a way to remove Firefox without deleting lubuntu-desktop* ? === james is now known as Guest56808 [20:12] Hey all. I've been running 19.10, and unfortunately didn't do a release upgrade before it hit EOL. When I finally got around to it, do-release-upgrade just let me know that my release was EOL. I edited the sources.list file and replaced eoan with focal, and i managed to do a apt-get update and dist-upgrade against the focal repositories. lsb_release -a and do-release-upgrade now both report me as running [20:12] 20.04, and apt-get reports that my packages are all up to date. My problem is, after a reboot, when I try to log in at the lock screen, the screen hangs as soon as I hit enter, after entering the password. I can ctrl+alt+F2 to get into a tty, which is how I'm writing this right now.. [20:13] If anyone has an idea of how to troubleshoot this, I'd be most appreciative, as I would much prefer to repair my current installation, rather than having to do a clean reinstall. [20:14] Oh, and happy new year, by the way :) [20:58] log`: i don'T know the very answer, but generally, with such post upgrade issues, you may want to ensure you have the flavour meta package installed (lubuntu-desktop), review apt misconfigurations (by inspecting configured apt sources, running 'apt update' and 'apt full-upgrade'), review leftover foreign packages and package versions (using tools such as apt-forktracer, deborphan), clean up old configurations and caches in your home directory. [20:59] tomreyn: Thank you so much, that's very helpful. I'll investigate further. [21:00] seeting up a new user account temporarily and trying to login with that can hint on which area the problem is in - either something is off in your existing $HOME (login should work fine with new user account), or it's a system-wide issue (missing, wrongly versioned packages) [21:00] log`: ^ [21:00] Excellent suggestion, I'll start there [21:00] dont forget to remove this user in the end. [21:04] Okay, trying with a freshly created user, the problem seems to manifest itself in the same way, BUT, after I log in and the login screen appears to hang, a Steam installer window popped up over the screen prompting me to complete the Steam installation for the current user. [21:05] This leads me to believe that SDDM is actually logging me in correctly, but something goes wrong when the desktop environment has to take over. So there's nothing new being drawn on top of the last screen rendered by the login screen somehow. I noticed I can still move my mouse after login as well. [21:06] So I guess I have wrong/missing packages somewhere.. [21:21] looks like the lubuntu-desktop package simply wasn't selected, so I'm trying that now. Thanks again tomreyn :) [21:53] After installing the lubuntu-desktop metapackage and rebooting, all icons, and the profile picture i had configured for my existing user, are now rendered as black boxes. In the session selector drop down, in the top left of the login screen, I have three entries: Lubuntu, LxQt Desktop, and Openbox. Can someone verify that these three options are supposed to be present? [21:54] the above is in reference to the login screen, the symptom persists as before. I enter my password and press enter, and the login screen just stays up, while I can still move my mouse. [22:08] It works now, after another reboot and making sure to select Lubuntu in the session dropdown. Looks like I'm good to go. Thanks again tomreyn and a happy new year to everyone. [23:26] log`: nice, glad you worked it out. iwasn't around but couldn't really have helped in more details anyways - I'm not that familiar with the l in lubuntu really. [23:26] and a healthy and happy 2021 to you as well! === james is now known as Guest41945
